Enumeration of partial Lukasiewicz paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
Łukasiewicz paths are lattice paths in $\Bbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin, ending on the $x$-axis, and consisting of steps in the set $\{(1,k), k\geq -1\}$. We give generating function and exact value for the number of $n$-length prefixes (resp. suffixes) of these paths ending at height $k\geq 0$ with a given type of step. We make a similar study for prefixes of height at most $t\geq 0$. Using the explicit forms for the paths of bounded height, we evaluate the average height asymptotically. For fixed $k$ and $n\to\infty$, this quantity behaves as $\sqrt{πn}$. Finally we study (in the same way) prefixes of alternate Łukasiewicz paths, i.e., Łukasiewicz paths that do contain two consecutive steps with the same direction.
The spectral even cycle problem
In this paper, we study the maximum adjacency spectral radii of graphs of large order that do not contain an even cycle of given length. For $n>k$, let $S_{n,k}$ be the join of a clique on $k$ vertices with an independent set of $n-k$ vertices and denote by $S_{n,k}^+$ the graph obtained from $S_{n,k}$ by adding one edge. In 2010, Nikiforov conjectured that for $n$ large enough, the $C_{2k+2}$-free graph of maximum spectral radius is $S_{n,k}^+$ and that the $\{C_{2k+1},C_{2k+2}\}$-free graph of maximum spectral radius is $S_{n,k}$. We solve this two-part conjecture.
Taming graphs with no large creatures and skinny ladders
We confirm a conjecture of Gartland and Lokshtanov [arXiv:2007.08761]: if for a hereditary graph class $\mathcal{G}$ there exists a constant $k$ such that no member of $\mathcal{G}$ contains a $k$-creature as an induced subgraph or a $k$-skinny-ladder as an induced minor, then there exists a polynomial $p$ such that every $G \in \mathcal{G}$ contains at most $p(|V(G)|)$ minimal separators. By a result of Fomin, Todinca, and Villanger [SIAM J. Comput. 2015] the latter entails the existence of polynomial-time algorithms for Maximum Weight Independent Set, Feedback Vertex Set and many other problems, when restricted to an input graph from $\mathcal{G}$. Furthermore, as shown by Gartland and Lokshtanov, our result implies a full dichotomy of hereditary graph classes defined by a finite set of forbidden induced subgraphs into tame (admitting a polynomial bound of the number of minimal separators) and feral (containing infinitely many graphs with exponential number of minimal separators).

Connectivity keeping caterpillars and spiders in bipartite graphs with connectivity at most three
Published • View Publication • BIB
A conjecture of Luo, Tian and Wu (2022) says that for every positive integer $k$ and every finite tree $T$ with bipartition $X$ and $Y$ (denote $t = \max\{|X|,|Y |\})$, every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with $δ(G) \geq k + t$ contains a subtree $T' \cong T$ such that $κ(G-V (T')) \geq k$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for caterpillars when $k=3$ and spiders when $k\leq 3$.

Counterexamples to Gerbner's Conjecture on Stability of Maximal $F$-free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F$ be an $(r+1)$-color critical graph with $r\geq 2$, that is, $χ(F)=r+1$ and there is an edge $e$ in $F$ such that $χ(F-e)=r$. Gerbner recently conjectured that every $n$-vertex maximal $F$-free graph with at least $(1-\frac{1}{r})\frac{n^2}{2}- o(n^{\frac{r+1}{r}})$ edges contains an induced complete $r$-partite graph on $n-o(n)$ vertices. Let $F_{s,k}$ be a graph obtained from $s$ copies of $C_{2k+1}$ by sharing a common edge. In this paper, we show that for all $k\geq 2$ if $G$ is an $n$-vertex maximal $F_{s,k}$-free graph with at least $n^{2}/4 - o(n^{\frac{s+2}{s+1}})$ edges, then $G$ contains an induced complete bipartite graph on $n-o(n)$ vertices. We also show that it is best possible. This disproves Gerbner's conjecture for $r=2$.

Vertex spanning planar Laman graphs in triangulated surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that every triangulation of either of the torus, projective plane and Klein bottle, contains a vertex-spanning planar Laman graph as a subcomplex. Invoking a result of Kir{á}ly, we conclude that every $1$-skeleton of a triangulation of a surface of nonnegative Euler characteristic has a rigid realization in the plane using at most 26 locations for the vertices.

Balanced subdivisions of cliques in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $H$, a balanced subdivision of $H$ is a graph obtained from $H$ by subdividing every edge the same number of times. In 1984, Thomassen conjectured that for each integer $k\ge 1$, high average degree is sufficient to guarantee a balanced subdivision of $K_k$. Recently, Liu and Montgomery resolved this conjecture. We give an optimal estimate up to an absolute constant factor by showing that there exists $c>0$ such that for sufficiently large $d$, every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of a clique with at least $cd^{1/2}$ vertices. It also confirms a conjecture from Verstra{ë}te: every graph of average degree $cd^2$, for some absolute constant $c>0$, contains a pair of disjoint isomorphic subdivisions of the complete graph $K_d$. We also prove that there exists some absolute $c>0$ such that for sufficiently large $d$, every $C_4$-free graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of the complete graph $K_{cd}$, which extends a result of Balogh, Liu and Sharifzadeh.

Comparing the number of infected vertices in two symmetric sets for Bernoulli percolation (and other random partitions)
For Bernoulli percolation on a given graph $G = (V,E)$ we consider the cluster of some fixed vertex $o \in V$. We aim at comparing the number of vertices of this cluster in the set $V_+$ and in the set $V_-$, where $V_+,V_- \subset V$ have the same size. Intuitively, if $V_-$ is further away from $o$ than $V_+$, it should contain fewer vertices of the cluster. We prove such a result in terms of stochastic domination, provided that $o \in V_+$, and $V_+,V_-$ satisfy some strong symmetry conditions, and we give applications of this result in case $G$ is a bunkbed graph, a layered graph, the 2D square lattice or a hypercube graph. Our result only relies on general probabilistic techniques and a combinatorial result on group actions, and thus extends to fairly general random partitions, e.g. as induced by Bernoulli site percolation or the random cluster model.

Resolution of the Erdős-Sauer problem on regular subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we completely resolve the well-known problem of Erdős and Sauer from 1975 which asks for the maximum number of edges an $n$-vertex graph can have without containing a $k$-regular subgraph, for some fixed integer $k\geq 3$. We prove that any $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $C_k\log \log n$ contains a $k$-regular subgraph. This matches the lower bound of Pyber, Rödl and Szemerédi and substantially improves an old result of Pyber, who showed that average degree at least $C_k\log n$ is enough. Our method can also be used to settle asymptotically a problem raised by Erdős and Simonovits in 1970 on almost regular subgraphs of sparse graphs and to make progress on the well-known question of Thomassen from 1983 on finding subgraphs with large girth and large average degree.
Disjoint isomorphic balanced clique subdivisions
A thoroughly studied problem in Extremal Graph Theory is to find the best possible density condition in a host graph $G$ for guaranteeing the presence of a particular subgraph $H$ in $G$. One such classical result, due to Bollobás and Thomason, and independently Komlós and Szemerédi, states that average degree $O(k^2)$ guarantees the existence of a $K_k$-subdivision. We study two directions extending this result. On the one hand, Verstraëte conjectured that the quadratic bound $O(k^2)$ would guarantee already two vertex-disjoint isomorphic copies of a $K_k$-subdivision. On the other hand, Thomassen conjectured that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$ there is some $d = d(k)$ such that every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of $K_k$, that is, a copy of $K_k$ where the edges are replaced by paths of equal length. Recently, Liu and Montgomery confirmed Thomassen's conjecture, but the optimal bound on $d(k)$ remains open. In this paper, we show that the quadratic bound $O(k^2)$ suffices to force a balanced $K_k$-subdivision. This gives the optimal bound on $d(k)$ needed in Thomassen's conjecture and implies the existence of $O(1)$ many vertex-disjoint isomorphic $K_k$-subdivisions, confirming Verstraëte's conjecture in a strong sense.

Efficient Recognition of Subgraphs of Planar Cubic Bridgeless Graphs
It follows from the work of Tait and the Four-Color-Theorem that a planar cubic graph is 3-edge-colorable if and only if it contains no bridge. We consider the question of which planar graphs are subgraphs of planar cubic bridgeless graphs, and hence 3-edge-colorable. We provide an efficient recognition algorithm that given an $n$-vertex planar graph, augments this graph in $O(n^2)$ steps to a planar cubic bridgeless supergraph, or decides that no such augmentation is possible. The main tools involve the Generalized Antifactor-problem for the fixed embedding case, and SPQR-trees for the variable embedding case.

The parabolic coset structure of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups
In this paper, we study the decomposition of Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group with respect to cosets of a parabolic subgroup. Our main result is that the intersection of a lower Bruhat interval with a parabolic coset contains a unique maximal element. As an application, we give a decomposition formula for the Poincaré polynomial of a Coxeter group element. We also show that the fibers of standard parabolic projection maps on Schubert varieties are themselves Schubert varieties.

Oriented Hamiltonian Cycles in Tournaments: a Proof of Rosenfeld's Conjecture
Rosenfeld in 1974 conjectured that there is an integer N > 8 such that every tournament of order n > N contains every non-directed cycle of order n. We prove that, with exactly 35 exceptions, every tournament of order n > 2 contains each non-directed cycle of order m, 2 < m < n+1.

Monochromatic components with many edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an $r$-edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$, what is the largest number of edges in a monochromatic connected component? This natural question has only recently received the attention it deserves, with work by two disjoint subsets of the authors resolving it for the first two special cases, when $r = 2$ or $3$. Here we introduce a general framework for studying this problem and apply it to fully resolve the $r = 4$ case, showing that any $4$-edge-coloring of $K_n$ contains a monochromatic component with at least $\frac{1}{12}\binom{n}{2}$ edges, where the constant $\frac{1}{12}$ is optimal only when the coloring matches a certain construction of Gyárfás.

Piercing families of convex sets in the plane that avoid a certain subfamily with lines
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a $C(k)$ to be a family of $k$ sets $F_1,\dots,F_k$ such that $\textrm{conv}(F_i\cup F_{i+1})\cap \textrm{conv}(F_j\cup F_{j+1})=\emptyset$ when $\{i,i+1\}\cap \{j,j+1\}=\emptyset$ (indices are taken modulo $k$). We show that if $\mathcal{F}$ is a family of compact, convex sets that does not contain a $C(k)$, then there are $k-2$ lines that pierce $\mathcal{F}$. Additionally, we give an example of a family of compact, convex sets that contains no $C(k)$ and cannot be pierced by $\left\lceil \frac{k}{2} \right\rceil -1$ lines.

Powers of Hamiltonian cycles in randomly augmented Dirac graphs -- the complete collection
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the powers of Hamiltonian cycles in randomly augmented Dirac graphs, that is, $n$-vertex graphs $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1/2+\varepsilon)n$ to which some random edges are added. For any Dirac graph and every integer $m\ge2$, we accurately estimate the threshold probability $p=p(n)$ for the event that the random augmentation $G\cup G(n,p)$ contains the $m$-th power of a Hamiltonian cycle.

On the location of chromatic zeros of series-parallel graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider the zeros of the chromatic polynomial of series-parallel graphs. Complementing a result of Sokal, showing density outside the disk $|q-1|\leq1$, we show density of these zeros in the half plane $\Re(q)>3/2$ and we show there exists an open region $U$ containing the interval $(0,32/27)$ such that $U\setminus\{1\}$ does not contain zeros of the chromatic polynomial of series-parallel graphs. We also disprove a conjecture of Sokal by showing that for each large enough integer $Δ$ there exists a series-parallel graph for which all vertices but one have degree at most $Δ$ and whose chromatic polynomial has a zero with real part exceeding $Δ$.

Complete Minors in Complements of Non-Separating Planar Graphs
Published in Involve 16 (2023) 505-518 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the complement of any non-separating planar graph of order $2n-3$ contains a $K_n$ minor, and argue that the order $2n-3$ is lowest possible with this property. To illustrate the necessity of the non-separating hypothesis, we give an example of a planar graph of order 11 whose complement does not contain a $K_7$ minor. We argue that the complements of planar graphs of order 11 are intrinsically knotted. We compute the Hadwiger numbers of complements of wheel graphs.

Lexicographically maximal edges of dual hypergraphs and Nash-solvability of tight game forms
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{A} = \{A_1, \ldots, A_m\}$ and $\mathcal{B} = \{B_1, \ldots, B_n\}$ be a pair of dual multi-hypergraphs on the common ground set $O = \{o_1, \ldots, o_k\}$. Note that each of them may have embedded or equal edges. An edge is called containment minimal (or just minimal, for short) if it is not a strict superset of another edge. Yet, equal minimal edges may exist. By duality, (i) $A \cap B \neq \emptyset$ for every pair $A \in \mathcal{A}$ and $B \in \mathcal{B}$; (ii) if $A$ is minimal then for every $o \in A$ there exists a $B \in \mathcal{B}$ such that $A \cap B = \{o\}$. We will extend claim (ii) as follows. A linear order $\succ$ over $O$ defines a unique lexicographic order $\succ_L$ over the $2^O$. Let $A$ be a lexicographically maximal (lexmax) edge of $\mathcal{A}$. Then, (iii) $A$ is minimal and for every $o \in A$ there exists a minimal $B \in \mathcal{B}$ such that $A \cap B = \{o\}$ and $o \succeq o'$ for each $o' \in B$. This property has important applications in game theory implying Nash-solvability of tight game forms as shown in the old (1975 and 1989) work of the first author. Here we give a new, very short, proof of (iii). Edges $A$ and $B$ mentioned in (iii) can be found out in polynomial time. This is trivial if $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are given explicitly. Yet, it is true even if only $\mathcal{A}$ is given, and not explicitly, but by a polynomial containment oracle, which for a subset $O_A \subseteq O$ answers in polynomial time whether $O_A$ contains an edge of $\mathcal{A}$.

Rainbow clique subdivisions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that for any integer $t \ge 2$, every properly edge colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ contains a rainbow subdivision of a complete graph of size $t$. Note that this bound is within $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ factor of the lower bound. This also implies a result on the rainbow Turán number of cycles.
