The repetition threshold for binary rich words
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 22 no. 1, Analysis of Algorithms (February 24, 2020) dmtcs:5791 • View Publication • BIB
A word of length $n$ is rich if it contains $n$ nonempty palindromic factors. An infinite word is rich if all of its finite factors are rich. Baranwal and Shallit produced an infinite binary rich word with critical exponent $2+\sqrt{2}/2$ ($\approx 2.707$) and conjectured that this was the least possible critical exponent for infinite binary rich words (i.e., that the repetition threshold for binary rich words is $2+\sqrt{2}/2$). In this article, we give a structure theorem for infinite binary rich words that avoid $14/5$-powers (i.e., repetitions with exponent at least 2.8). As a consequence, we deduce that the repetition threshold for binary rich words is $2+\sqrt{2}/2$, as conjectured by Baranwal and Shallit. This resolves an open problem of Vesti for the binary alphabet; the problem remains open for larger alphabets.

Bipartite Turán problems for ordered graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A zero-one matrix $M$ contains a zero-one matrix $A$ if one can delete some rows and columns of $M$, and turn some 1-entries into 0-entries such that the resulting matrix is $A$. The extremal number of $A$, denoted by $ex(n,A)$, is the maximum number of $1$-entries in an $n\times n$ sized matrix $M$ that does not contain $A$. A matrix $A$ is column-$t$-partite (or row-$t$-partite), if it can be cut along the columns (or rows) into $t$ submatrices such that every row (or column) of these submatrices contains at most one $1$-entry. We prove that if $A$ is column-$t$-partite, then $ex(n,A)<n^{2-\frac{1}{t}+\frac{1}{2t^{2}}+o(1)}$, and if $A$ is both column- and row-$t$-partite, then $ex(n,A)<n^{2-\frac{1}{t}+o(1)}$. Our proof combines a novel density-increment-type argument with the celebrated dependent random choice method. Results about the extremal numbers of zero-one matrices translate into results about the Turán numbers of bipartite ordered graphs. In particular, a zero-one matrix with at most $t$ 1-entries in each row corresponds to a bipartite ordered graph with maximum degree $t$ in one of its vertex classes. Our results are partially motivated by a well known result of Füredi (1991) and Alon, Krivelevich, Sudakov (2003) stating that if $H$ is a bipartite graph with maximum degree $t$ in one of the vertex classes, then $ex(n,H)=O(n^{2-\frac{1}{t}})$. The aim of the present paper is to establish similar general results about the extremal numbers of ordered graphs.

Supertrees
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 27 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-universal permutation, or $k$-superpermutation, is a permutation that contains all permutations of length $k$ as patterns. The problem of finding the minimum length of a $k$-superpermutation has recently received significant attention in the field of permutation patterns. One can ask analogous questions for other classes of objects. In this paper, we study $k$-supertrees. For each $d\geq 2$, we focus on two types of rooted plane trees called $d$-ary plane trees and $[d]$-trees. Motivated by recent developments in the literature, we consider "contiguous" and "noncontiguous" notions of pattern containment for each type of tree. We obtain both upper and lower bounds on the minimum possible size of a $k$-supertree in three cases; in the fourth, we determine the minimum size exactly. One of our lower bounds makes use of a recent result of Albert, Engen, Pantone, and Vatter on $k$-universal layered permutations.
Ramsey and Gallai-Ramsey numbers for stars with extra independent edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we obtain general upper and lower bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers for the graph $G = S_t^{r}$ obtained from a star of order $t$ by adding $r$ extra independent edges between leaves of the star so there are $r$ triangles and $t - 2r - 1$ pendent edges in $S_t^{r}$. We also prove some sharp results when $t = 2$.

Many Turan exponents via subdivisions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n$, the {\it Turán number} $\ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. A real number $r\in(1,2)$ is called a {\it Turán exponent} if there exists a bipartite graph $H$ such that $\ex(n,H)=Θ(n^r)$. A long-standing conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits states that $1+\frac{p}{q}$ is a Turán exponent for all positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $q> p$. In this paper, we build on recent developments on the conjecture to establish a large family of new Turán exponents. In particular, it follows from our main result that $1+\frac{p}{q}$ is a Turán exponent for all positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $q> p^2$.

Co-degrees resilience for perfect matchings in random hypergraphs
Published in E-JC. 27 (2020) 1.40 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove an optimal co-degrees resilience property for the binomial $k$-uniform hypergraph model $H_{n,p}^k$ with respect to perfect matchings. That is, for a sufficiently large $n$ which is divisible by $k$, and $p\geq C_k\log_n/n$, we prove that with high probability every subgraph $H\subseteq H^k_{n,p}$ with minimum co-degree (meaning, the number of supersets every set of size $k-1$ is contained in) at least $(1/2+o(1))np$ contains a perfect matching.

Most binary matrices have no small defining set
Published in Disc. Math. 343 (2020), 112035 • View Publication • BIB
Consider a matrix $M$ chosen uniformly at random from a class of $m \times n$ matrices of zeros and ones with prescribed row and column sums. A partially filled matrix $D$ is a $\mathit{defining}$ $\mathit{set}$ for $M$ if $M$ is the unique member of its class that contains the entries in $D$. The $\mathit{size}$ of a defining set is the number of filled entries. A $\mathit{critical}$ $\mathit{set}$ is a defining set for which the removal of any entry stops it being a defining set. For some small fixed $ε>0$, we assume that $n\le m=o(n^{1+ε})$, and that $λ\le1/2$, where $λ$ is the proportion of entries of $M$ that equal $1$. We also assume that the row sums of $M$ do not vary by more than $\mathcal{O}(n^{1/2+ε})$, and that the column sums do not vary by more than $\mathcal{O}(m^{1/2+ε})$. Under these assumptions we show that $M$ almost surely has no defining set of size less than $λmn-\mathcal{O}(m^{7/4+ε})$. It follows that $M$ almost surely has no critical set of size more than $(1-λ)mn+\mathcal{O}(m^{7/4+ε})$. Our results generalise a theorem of Cavenagh and Ramadurai, who examined the case when $λ=1/2$ and $n=m=2^k$ for an integer $k$.

Affine flag graphs and classification of a family of symmetric graphs with complete quotients
Published in Discrete Math. 342 (2019) 1792-1798 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $Γ$ is $G$-symmetric if $G$ is a group of automorphisms of $Γ$ which is transitive on the set of ordered pairs of adjacent vertices of $Γ$. If $V(Γ)$ admits a nontrivial $G$-invariant partition ${\cal B}$ such that for blocks $B, C \in {\cal B}$ adjacent in the quotient graph $Γ_{\cal B}$ of $Γ$ relative to ${\cal B}$, exactly one vertex of $B$ has no neighbour in $C$, then $Γ$ is called an almost multicover of $Γ_{\cal B}$. In this case an incidence structure with point set ${\cal B}$ arises naturally, and it is a $(G, 2)$-point-transitive and $G$-block-transitive 2-design if in addition $Γ_{\cal B}$ is a complete graph. In this paper we classify all $G$-symmetric graphs $Γ$ such that (i) ${\cal B}$ has block size $|B| \ge 3$; (ii) $Γ_{\cal B}$ is complete and almost multi-covered by $Γ$; (iii) the incidence structure involved is a linear space; and (iv) $G$ contains a regular normal subgroup which is elementary abelian. This classification together with earlier results in [A. Gardiner and C. E. Praeger, Australas. J. Combin. 71 (2018) 403--426], [M.~Giulietti et al., J. Algebraic Combin. 38 (2013) 745--765] and [T. Fang et al., Electronic J. Combin. 23 (2) (2016) P2.27] completes the classification of symmetric graphs satisfying (i) and (ii).
Improved bounds for induced poset saturation
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a finite poset $\mathcal{P}$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of elements in the Boolean lattice is induced-$\mathcal{P}$-saturated if $\mathcal{F}$ contains no copy of $\mathcal{P}$ as an induced subposet but every proper superset of $\mathcal{F}$ contains a copy of $\mathcal{P}$ as an induced subposet. The minimum size of an induced-$\mathcal{P}$-saturated family in the $n$-dimensional Boolean lattice, denoted $\operatorname{sat}^*(n,\mathcal{P})$, was first studied by Ferrara et al. (2017). Our work focuses on strengthening lower bounds. For the 4-point poset known as the diamond, we prove $\operatorname{sat}^*(n,\mathcal{D}_2)\geq\sqrt{n}$, improving upon a logarithmic lower bound. For the antichain with $k+1$ elements, we prove $\operatorname{sat}^*(n,\mathcal{A}_{k+1})\geq (1-o_k(1))\frac{kn}{\log_2 k}$, improving upon a lower bound of $3n-1$ for $k\geq 3$.

On the probability of existence of a universal cycle or a universal word for a set of words
Published • View Publication • BIB
A universal cycle, or u-cycle, for a given set of words is a circular word that contains each word from the set exactly once as a contiguous subword. The celebrated de Bruijn sequences are a particular case of such a u-cycle, where a set in question is the set $A^n$ of all words of length $n$ over a $k$-letter alphabet $A$. A universal word, or u-word, is a linear, i.e. non-circular, version of the notion of a u-cycle, and it is defined similarly. Removing some words in $A^n$ may, or may not, result in a set of words for which u-cycle, or u-word, exists. The goal of this paper is to study the probability of existence of the universal objects in such a situation. We give lower bounds for the probability in general cases, and also derive explicit answers for the case of removing up to two words in $A^n$, or the case when $k=2$ and $n\leq 4$.

Faster algorithms for cograph edge modification problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the Cograph Deletion (resp., Cograph Editing) problem the input is a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, and the goal is to decide whether there is a set of edges of size at most $k$ whose removal from $G$ (resp., removal and addition to $G$) results in a graph that does not contain an induced path with four vertices. In this paper we give algorithms for Cograph Deletion and Cograph Editing whose running times are $O^*(2.303^k)$ and $O^*(4.329^k)$, respectively.

Erdos-Gallai Stability Theorem for Linear Forests
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
The Erdős-Gallai Theorem states that every graph of average degree more than $l-2$ contains a path of order $l$ for $l\ge 2$. In this paper, we obtain a stability version of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem in terms of minimum degree. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order $n$ and $F=(\bigcup_{i=1}^kP_{2a_i})\bigcup(\bigcup_{i=1}^lP_{2b_i+1})$ be $k+l$ disjoint paths of order $2a_1, \ldots, 2a_{k}, 2b_1+1, \ldots, 2b_l+1,$ respectively, where $k\ge 0$, $0\le l\le 2$, and $k+l\geq 2$. If the minimum degree $δ(G)\ge \sum_{i=1}^ka_i+\sum_{i=1}^lb_i-1$, then $F\subseteq G$ except several classes of graphs for sufficiently large $n$, which extends and strengths the results of Ali and Staton for an even path and Yuan and Nikiforov for an odd path.

b-continuity and Partial Grundy Coloring of graphs with large girth
Published • View Publication • BIB
A b-coloring of a graph is a proper coloring such that each color class has at least one vertex which is adjacent to each other color class. The b-spectrum of $G$ is the set $S_{b}(G)$ of integers $k$ such that $G$ has a b-coloring with $k$ colors and $b(G)=\max S_{b}(G)$ is the b-chromatic number of $G$. A graph is b-continous if $S_{b}(G)=[χ(G),b(G)]\cap \mathbb{Z}$. An infinite number of graphs that are not b-continuous is known. It is also known that graphs with girth at least 10 are b-continuous. A partial Grundy coloring is a proper coloring $f:V(G)\rightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$ such that each color class $i$ contains some vertex $u$ that is adjacent to every color class $j$ such that $j<i$. The partial Grundy number of $G$ is the maximum value $\partialΓ(G)$ for which $G$ has a partial Grundy coloring. In this work, we prove that graphs with girth at least 8 are b-continuous, and that the b-spectrum of a graph $G$ with girth at least 7 contains the integers between $2χ(G)$ and $b(G)$. We also prove that $\partialΓ(G)$ equals a known upper bound when $G$ is a graph with girth at least 7. These results generalize previous ones by Linhares-Sales and Silva (2017), and by Shi et al.(2005).
On Cycle Transversals and Their Connected Variants in the Absence of a Small Linear Forest
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is $H$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. We prove new complexity results for the two classical cycle transversal problems Feedback Vertex Set and Odd Cycle Transversal by showing that they can be solved in polynomial time on $(sP_1+P_3)$-free graphs for every integer $s\geq 1$. We show the same result for the variants Connected Feedback Vertex Set and Connected Odd Cycle Transversal. We also prove that the latter two problems are polynomial-time solvable on cographs; this was already known for Feedback Vertex Set and Odd Cycle Transversal. We complement these results by proving that Odd Cycle Transversal and Connected Odd Cycle Transversal are NP-complete on $(P_2+P_5,P_6)$-free graphs.
Hypergraph based Berge hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Fix a hypergraph $\mathcal{F}$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a {\it Berge copy of $\mathcal{F}$} or {\it Berge-$\mathcal{F}$} if we can choose a subset of each hyperedge of $\mathcal{H}$ to obtain a copy of $\mathcal{F}$. A hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is {\it Berge-$\mathcal{F}$-free} if it does not contain a subhypergraph which is Berge copy of $\mathcal{F}$. This is a generalization of the usual, graph based Berge hypergraphs, where $\mathcal{F}$ is a graph. In this paper, we study extremal properties of hypergraph based Berge hypergraphs and generalize several results from the graph based setting. In particular, we show that for any $r$-uniform hypregraph $\mathcal{F}$, the sum of the sizes of the hyperedges of a (not necessarily uniform) Berge-$\mathcal{F}$-free hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ on $n$ vertices is $o(n^r)$ when all the hyperedges of $\mathcal{H}$ are large enough. We also give a connection between hypergraph based Berge hypergraphs and generalized hypergraph Turán problems.

Independence number in triangle-free graphs avoiding a minor
The celebrated Hadwiger's conjecture states that if a graph contains no $K_{t+1}$ minor then it is $t$-colourable. If true, it would in particular imply that every $n$-vertex $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph has an independent set of size at least $n/t$. In 1982, Duchet and Meyniel proved that this bound holds within a factor $2$. Their bound has been improved; most notably in an absolute factor by Fox, which was later improved by Balogh and Kostochka. Here we consider the same question for triangle-free graphs. By the results of Shearer and Kostochka and Thomason, it follows that any triangle-free graph with no $K_t$ minor has an independent set of size $Ω(\tfrac{\sqrt{\log{t}}}{t}n)$. We show that a much larger independent set exists; for all sufficiently large $t$ every triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices with no $K_t$-minor has an independent set of size $ \tfrac{n}{t^{1-\varepsilon}}$. This answers a question of Sergey Norin.

Configuration sets with nonempty interior
Published in Jour. Geometric Analysis 31 (2021), no. 7, 6662-6680 • View Publication • BIB
A theorem of Steinhaus states that if $E\subset \mathbb R^d$ has positive Lebesgue measure, then the difference set $E-E$ contains a neighborhood of $0$. Similarly, if $E$ merely has Hausdorff dimension $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)>(d+1)/2$, a result of Mattila and Sjölin states that the distance set $Δ(E)\subset\mathbb R$ contains an open interval. In this work, we study such results from a general viewpoint, replacing $E-E$ or $Δ(E)$ with more general $Φ\,$-configurations for a class of $Φ:\mathbb R^d\times\mathbb R^d\to\mathbb R^k$, and showing that, under suitable lower bounds on $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)$ and a regularity assumption on the family of generalized Radon transforms associated with $Φ$, it follows that the set $Δ_Φ(E)$ of $Φ$-configurations in $E$ has nonempty interior in $\mathbb R^k$. Further extensions hold for $Φ\,$-configurations generated by two sets, $E$ and $F$, in spaces of possibly different dimensions and with suitable lower bounds on $\dim_{\mathcal H}(E)+\dim_{\mathcal H}(F)$.
Thresholds in random motif graphs
We introduce a natural generalization of the Erdős-Rényi random graph model in which random instances of a fixed motif are added independently. The binomial random motif graph $G(H,n,p)$ is the random (multi)graph obtained by adding an instance of a fixed graph $H$ on each of the copies of $H$ in the complete graph on $n$ vertices, independently with probability $p$. We establish that every monotone property has a threshold in this model, and determine the thresholds for connectivity, Hamiltonicity, the existence of a perfect matching, and subgraph appearance. Moreover, in the first three cases we give the analogous hitting time results; with high probability, the first graph in the random motif graph process that has minimum degree one (or two) is connected and contains a perfect matching (or Hamiltonian respectively).

Partition of a Subset into Two Directed Cycles with Partial Degrees
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a directed graph of order $n\geq 6$. Let $W$ be a subset of $V$ with $|W|\geq 6$. Suppose that every vertex of $W$ has degree at least $(3n-3)/2$ in $D$. Then for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2$ with $n_1\geq 3$ and $n_2\geq 3$, $D$ contains two disjoint directed cycles $C_1$ and $C_2$ such that $|V(C_1)\cap W|=n_1$ and $|V(C_2)\cap W|=n_2$. We conjecture that for any integer partition $|W|=n_1+n_2+\cdots +n_k$ with $k\geq 3$ and $n_i\geq 3(1\leq i\leq k)$, $D$ contains $k$ disjoint directed cycles $C_1,C_2,\ldots , C_k$ such that $|V(C_i)\cap W|=n_i$ for all $1\leq i\leq k$. The degree condition is sharp in general.

Modified Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Constants for $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^2$
For an abelian group $G$ and an integer $t > 0$, the modified Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $s'_t(G)$ is the smallest integer $\ell$ such that any zero-sum sequence of length at least $\ell$ with elements in $G$ contains a zero-sum subsequence (not necessarily consecutive) of length $t$. We compute bounds for $s'_{t}(G)$ for $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^2$ and $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/n_1\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/n_2\mathbb{Z}\right)$. We also compute bounds for $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}\right)^d$ where the subsequence can be any length in $\{p, \dots, (d-1)p\}$. Lastly, we investigate the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv constant for $G = \left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^2$ and subsequences of length $tn$.
