Paths and tableaux descriptions of Jacobi-Trudi determinant associated with quantum affine algebra of type D_n
Published in J. Alg. Combin. 26 (2007) 253-290 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Jacobi-Trudi-type determinant which is conjectured to be the q-character of a certain, in many cases irreducible, finite-dimensional representation of the quantum affine algebra of type D_n. Unlike the A_n and B_n cases, a simple application of the Gessel-Viennot path method does not yield a positive sum expression of the determinant over a set of tuples of paths. However, applying an additional involution and a deformation of paths, we obtain a positive sum expression over a set of tuples of paths, which is naturally translated into the one over a set of tableaux on a skew diagram.

Schur Q-polynomials, multiple hypergeometric series and enumeration of marked shifted tableaux
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 115 (2008), 376-406 • View PublicationBIB
We study Schur Q-polynomials evaluated on a geometric progression, or equivalently q-enumeration of marked shifted tableaux, seeking explicit formulas that remain regular at q=1. We obtain several such expressions as multiple basic hypergeometric series, and as determinants and pfaffians of continuous q-ultraspherical or continuous q-Jacobi polynomials. As special cases, we obtain simple closed formulas for staircase-type partitions.

Hyperdeterminantal expressions for Jack functions of rectangular shapes
Published in Journal of Algebra 320 (2008) 612--632 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a Jacobi-Trudi type formula for Jack functions of rectangular shapes. In this formula, we make use of a hyperdeterminant, which is Cayley's simple generalization of the determinant. In addition, after developing the general theory of hyperdeterminants, we give summation formulae for Schur functions involving hyperdeterminants, and evaluate Toeplitz-type hyperdeterminants by using Jack function theory.

Matrix-Forest Theorems
The Laplacian matrix of a graph $G$ is $L(G)=D(G)-A(G)$, where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix and $D(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees. According to the Matrix-Tree Theorem, the number of spanning trees in $G$ is equal to any cofactor of an entry of $L(G)$. A rooted forest is a union of disjoint rooted trees. We consider the matrix $W(G)=I+L(G)$ and prove that the $(i,j)$-cofactor of $W(G)$ is equal to the number of spanning rooted forests of $G$, in which the vertices $i$ and $j$ belong to the same tree rooted at $i$. The determinant of $W(G)$ equals the total number of spanning rooted forests, therefore the $(i,j)$-entry of the matrix $W^{-1}(G)$ can be considered as a measure of relative ''forest-accessibility'' of vertex $i$ from $j$ (or $j$ from $i$). These results follow from somewhat more general theorems we prove, which concern weighted multigraphs. The analogous theorems for (multi)digraphs are also established. These results provide a graph-theoretic interpretation for the adjugate to the Laplacian characteristic matrix.

The determinant of q-distance matrices of trees and two quantities relating to permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove that two quantities relating to the length of permutations defined on trees are independent of the structures of trees. We also find that these results are closely related to the results obtained by Graham and Pollak (Bell System Tech. J. 50(1971) 2495--2519) and by Bapat, Kirkland, and Neumann (Linear Alg. Appl. 401(2005) 193--209).

Algorithmic aspects of algebraic methods for graph isomorphism testing
We present the implementation of an algorithm for graph isomorphism testing, based on ideas about number of walks (of sufficiently large length) between vertices. The algorithm is expanded for strongly regular graphs (SRG-s) by testing the local complements and values of determinants of their adjacency matrices. All known non-isomorphic SRG-s (with no more than 64 vertices) are distinguishable by this method.

A polynomial generalization of the power-compositions determinant
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $C(n,p)$ be the set of $p$-compositions of an integer $n$, i.e., the set of $p$-tuples $\bmα=(α_1,...,α_p)$ of nonnegative integers such that $α_1+...+α_p=n$, and $\mathbf{x}=(x_1,...,x_p)$ a vector of indeterminates. For $\bmα$ and ${\bmβ}$ two $p$-compositions of $n$, define $(\mathbf{x}+\bmα)^{\bmβ} = (x_1+α_1)^{β_1}... x_p+α_p)^{β_p}$. In this paper we prove an explicit formula for the determinant $\det_{\bmα,{\bmβ}\in C(n,p)}((\mathbf{x}+\bmα)^{\bmβ})$. In the case $x_1=...=x_p$ the formula gives a proof of a conjecture by C.~Krattenthaler.

On an identity due to ((Bump and Diaconis) and (Tracy and Widom))
Published in Canadian Math. Bulletin 54 (2011) no. 2, 255-269 • View PublicationBIB
A classical question for a Toeplitz matrix with given symbol is to compute asymptotics for the determinants of its reductions to finite rank. One can also consider how those asymptotics are affected when shifting an initial set of rows and columns (or, equivalently, asymptotics of their minors). Bump and Diaconis (Toeplitz minors, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 97 (2002), pp. 252--271) obtained a formula for such shifts involving Laguerre polynomials and sums over symmetric groups. They also showed how the Heine identity extends for such minors, which makes this question relevant to Random Matrix Theory. Independently, Tracy and Widom (On the limit of some Toeplitz-like determinants, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl., 23 (2002), pp. 1194--1196) used the Wiener-Hopf factorization to express those shifts in terms of products of infinite matrices. We show directly why those two expressions are equal and uncover some structure in both formulas that was unknown to their authors. We introduce a mysterious differential operator on symmetric functions that is very similar to vertex operators. We show that the Bump-Diaconis-Tracy- Widom identity is a differentiated version of the classical Jacobi-Trudi identity.

The determinant of $AA^*-A^*A$ for a Leonard pair $A,A^*$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ denote a field, and let $V$ denote a vector space over $K$ with finite positive dimension. We consider a pair of linear transformations $A:V \to V$ and $A^*: V \to V$ that satisfy (i), (ii) below: (i) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is irreducible tridiagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is diagonal. (ii) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A^*$ is irreducible tridiagonal and the matrix representing $A$ is diagonal. We call such a pair a {\em Leonard pair} on $V$. In this paper we investigate the commutator $AA^*-A^*A$. Our results are as follows. First assume the dimension of $V$ is even. We show $AA^*-A^*A$ is invertible and display several attractive formulae for the determinant. Next assume the dimension of $V$ is odd. We show that the null space of $AA^*-A^*A$ has dimension 1. We display a nonzero vector in this null space. We express this vector as a sum of eigenvectors for $A$ and as a sum of eigenvectors for $A^*$.

Classification of small $(0,1)$ matrices
Denote by $A_n$ the set of square $(0,1)$ matrices of order $n$. The set $A_n$, $n\le8$, is partitioned into row/column permutation equivalence classes enabling derivation of various facts by simple counting. For example, the number of regular $(0,1)$ matrices of order 8 is 10160459763342013440. Let $D_n$, $S_n$ denote the set of absolute determinant values and Smith normal forms of matrices from $A_n$. Denote by $a_n$ the smallest integer not in $D_n$. The sets $\mathcal{D}_9$ and $\mathcal{S}_9$ are obtained; especially, $a_9=103$. The lower bounds for $a_n$, $10\le n\le 19$, (exceeding the known lower bound $a_n\ge 2f_{n-1}$, where $f_n$ is $n$th Fibonacci number) are obtained. Row/permutation equivalence classes of $A_n$ correspond to bipartite graphs with $n$ black and $n$ white vertices, and so the other applications of the classification are possible.

Weighted locally gentle quivers and Cartan matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the class of weighted locally gentle quivers. This naturally extends the class of gentle quivers and gentle algebras, which have been intensively studied in the representation theory of finite-dimensional algebras, to a wider class of potentially infinite-dimensional algebras. Weights on the arrows of these quivers lead to gradings on the corresponding algebras. For the natural grading by path lengths, any locally gentle algebra is a Koszul algebra. Our main result is a general combinatorial formula for the determinant of the weighted Cartan matrix of a weighted locally gentle quiver. This determinant is invariant under graded derived equivalences of the corresponding algebras. We show that this weighted Cartan determinant is a rational function which is completely determined by the combinatorics of the quiver, more precisely by the number and the weight of certain oriented cycles. This leads to combinatorial invariants of the graded derived categories of graded locally gentle algebras.

Replacing Pfaffians and applications

We present some Pfaffian identities, which are completely different from the Plücker relations. As consequences we obtain a quadratic identity for the number of perfect matchings of plane graphs, which has a simpler form than the formula by Yan et al (Graphical condensation of plane graphs: a combinatorial approach, Theoret. Comput. Sci., to appear), and we also obtain some new determinant identities.

On the enumeration of some D-optimal designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two matrices with elements taken from the set {-1,1} are Hadamard equivalent if one can be converted into the other by a sequence of permutations of rows and columns, and negations of rows and columns. In this paper we summarize what is known about the number of equivalence classes of matrices having maximal determinant. We establish that there are 7 equivalence classes for matrices of order 21 and that there are at least 9,884 equivalence classes for matrices of order 26. The latter result is obtained primarily using a switching technique for producing new designs from old.

Exact Solution of the Six-Vertex Model with Domain Wall Boundary Conditions. Disordered Phase
Published • View PublicationBIB
The six-vertex model, or the square ice model, with domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC) has been introduced and solved for finite $N$ by Korepin and Izergin. The solution is based on the Yang-Baxter equations and it represents the free energy in terms of an $N\times N$ Hankel determinant. Paul Zinn-Justin observed that the Izergin-Korepin formula can be re-expressed in terms of the partition function of a random matrix model with a nonpolynomial interaction. We use this observation to obtain the large $N$ asymptotics of the six-vertex model with DWBC in the disordered phase. The solution is based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach and the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. As was noticed by Kuperberg, the problem of enumeration of alternating sign matrices (the ASM problem) is a special case of the the six-vertex model. We compare the obtained exact solution of the six-vertex model with known exact results for the 1, 2, and 3 enumerations of ASMs, and also with the exact solution on the so-called free fermion line. We prove the conjecture of Zinn-Justin that the partition function of the six-vertex model with DWBC has the asymptotics, $Z_N\sim CN^κe^{N^2f}$ as $N\to\infty$, and we find the exact value of the exponent $κ$.

Evaluating Two Determinants
This article evaluates the determinants of two classes of special matrices, which are both from a number theory problem. Applications of the evaluated determinants can be found in [arXiv:math.NT/0509523]. Note that the two determinants are actually special cases of Theorems 20 and 23 in [arXiv:math.CO/9902004], respectively. Since this paper does not provide any new results, it will not be published anywhere.

Eigenproblem for Jacobi matrices: hypergeometric series solution
Published in Phil.Trans.Roy.Soc.Lond.A366:1089-1114,2008 • View PublicationBIB
We study the perturbative power-series expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a general tridiagonal (Jacobi) matrix of dimension d. The(small) expansion parameters are being the entries of the two diagonals of length d-1 sandwiching the principal diagonal, which gives the unperturbed spectrum. The solution is found explicitly in terms of multivariable (Horn-type) hypergeometric series of 3d-5 variables in the generic case, or 2d-3 variables for the eigenvalue growing from a corner matrix element. To derive the result, we first rewrite the spectral problem for a Jacobi matrix as an equivalent system of cubic equations, which are then resolved by the application of the multivariable Lagrange inversion formula. The corresponding Jacobi determinant is calculated explicitly. Explicit formulae are also found for any monomial composed of eigenvector's components.

Stanley's Zrank Problem on Skew Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present an affirmative answer to Stanley's zrank problem, namely, the zrank and rank are equal for any skew partition. We show that certain classes of restricted Cauchy matrices are nonsingular and furthermore, the signs depend on the number of zero entries. Similar to notion of the jrank of a skew partition, we give a characterization of the rank in terms of the Giambelli type matrices of the corresponding skew Schur functions. We also show that the sign of the determinant of a factorial Cauchy matrix is uniquely determined by the number of its zero entries, which implies the nonsingularity of the inverse binomial coefficient matrix.

Some composition determinants

We compute two parametric determinants in which rows and columns are indexed by compositions, where in one determinant the entries are products of binomial coefficients, while in the other the entries are products of powers. These results generalize previous determinant evaluations due to the first and third author [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 23 (2001), 459--471] and ["A polynomial generalization of the power-compositions determinant," Linear Multilinear Algebra (to appear)], and they prove two conjectures of the second author ["Advanced determinant calculus: a complement," preliminary version].
