Consider the $2n$-by-$2n$ matrix $M=(m_{i,j})_{i,j=1}^{2n}$ with $m_{i,j} = 1$ for $i,j$ satisfying $|2i-2n-1|+|2j-2n-1| \leq 2n$ and $m_{i,j} = 0$ for all other $i,j$, consisting of a central diamond of 1's surrounded by 0's. When $n \geq 4$, the $λ$-determinant of the matrix $M$ (as introduced by Robbins and Rumsey) is not well-defined. However, if we replace the 0's by $t$'s, we get a matrix whose $λ$-determinant is well-defined and is a polynomial in $λ$ and $t$. The limit of this polynomial as $t \to 0$ is a polynomial in $λ$ whose value at $λ=1$ is the number of domino tilings of a $2n$-by-$2n$ square.

We introduce the notion of the cutting strip of an outside decomposition of a skew shape, and show that cutting strips are in one-to-one correspondence with outside decompositions for a given skew shape. Outside decompositions are introduced by Hamel and Goulden and are used to give an identity for the skew Schur function that unifies the determinantal expressions for the skew Schur functions including the Jacobi-Trudi determinant, its dual, the Giambelli determinant and the rim ribbon determinant due to Lascoux and Pragacz. Using cutting strips, one obtains a formula for the number of outside decompositions of a given skew shape. Moreover, one can define the basic transformations which we call the twist transformation among cutting strips, and derive a transformation theorem for the determinantal formula of Hamel and Goulden. The special case of the transformation theorem for the Giambelli identity and the rim ribbon identity was obtained by Lascoux and Pragacz. Our transformation theorem also applies to the supersymmetric skew Schur function.

We show that with any finite partially ordered set one can associate a matrix whose determinant factors nicely. As corollaries, we obtain a number of results in the literature about GCD matrices and their relatives. Our main theorem is proved combinatorially using nonintersecting paths in a directed graph.

We consider the matrix ${\frak Z}_P=Z_P+Z_P^t$, where the entries of $Z_P$ are the values of the zeta function of the finite poset $P$. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the determinant of ${\frak Z}_P$ and establish a recursive formula for this determinant in the case in which $P$ is a boolean algebra.

The problem of counting the number of Fully Packed Loop (FPL) configurations with four sets of a,b,c,d nested arches is addressed. It is shown that it may be expressed as the problem of enumeration of tilings of a domain of the triangular lattice with a conic singularity. After reexpression in terms of non-intersecting lines, the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot theorem leads to a formula as a sum of determinants. This is made quite explicit when min(a,b,c,d)=1 or 2. We also find a compact determinant formula which generates the numbers of configurations with b=d.

We determine invariants like the Smith normal form and the determinant for certain integral matrices which arise from the character tables of the symmetric groups S_n and their double covers. In particular, we give a simple computation, based on the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, of the determinant of the regular character table of S_n with respect to an integer r>1. This result had earlier been proved by Olsson in a longer and more indirect manner. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof of the Mathas' Conjecture on the determinant of the Cartan matrix of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. When r is prime we determine the Smith normal form of the regular character table. Taking r large yields the Smith normal form of the full character table of S_n. Analogous results are then given for spin characters.
The maximal {-1,1}-determinant of order 15

We study the question of finding the maximal determinant of matrices of odd order with entries {-1,1}. The most general upper bound on the maximal determinant, due to Barba, can only be achieved when the order is the sum of two consecutive squares. It is conjectured that the bound is always attained in such cases. Apart from these, only in orders 3, 7, 9, 11, 17 and 21 has the maximal value been established. In this paper we confirm the results for these orders, and add order 15 to the list. We follow previous authors in exhaustively searching for candidate Gram matrices having determinant greater than or equal to the square of a known lower bound on the maximum. We then attempt to decompose each candidate as the product of a {-1,1}-matrix and its transpose. For order 15 we find four candidates, all of Ehlich block form, two having determinant (105*3^5*2^14)^2 and the others determinant (108*3^5*2^14)^2. One of the former decomposes (in an essentially unique way) while the remaining three do not. This result proves a conjecture made independently by W. D. Smith and J. H. E. Cohn. We also use our method to compute improved upper bounds on the maximal determinant in orders 29, 33, and 37, and to establish the range of the determinant function of {-1,1}-matrices in orders 9 and 11.

Using determinant representations for partition functions of the corresponding square ice models and the method proposed recently by one of the authors, we investigate refined enumerations of vertically symmetric alternating-sign matrices, off-diagonally symmetric alternating-sign matrices and alternating-sign matrices with U-turn boundary. For all these cases the explicit formulas for refined enumerations are found. It particular, Kutin-Yuen conjecture is proved.

The initial purpose of this paper is to provide a combinatorial proof of the minor summation formula of Pfaffians based on the lattice path method. There we related Plücker relations with the minor summation formula of Pfaffians to simplify its proof by lattice paths. The second aim is to find a various applications of the minor summation formula. First we studied a variant of the Sundquist formula established in J. Alg. Combin. {\bf 5} (1996). Next we gave a simple proof of Kawanaka's formula concerning a $q$-series identity involving Schur functions in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 36} (1999). We also establish a certain identity similar to the Kawanaka formula, and give a combinatorial proof of the determinant version of his formula in Osaka J. Math. {\bf 38} (2001).

We study the determinant of the pxp circulant matrix whose first row is (1,-x,0,...,0,-y,0,...,0), the -y being in position q+1. The coefficients of this polynomial are integers that count certain classes of permutations. We show that all of the permutations that contribute to a fixed monomial x^ry^s have the same sign, and we determine that sign. We prove that a monomial x^ry^s appears if and only if p divides r+sq. Finally, we show that the size of the largest coefficient of the monomials that appear grows exponentially with p. We do this by proving that the permanent of the circulant whose first row is (1,1,0,...,0,1,0,...,0) is the sum of the absolute values of the coefficients of the monomials in the original determinant.

As a new concept tropical halfspaces are introduced to the (linear algebraic) geometry of the tropical semiring (R,min,+). This yields exterior descriptions of the tropical polytopes that were recently studied by Develin and Sturmfels in a variety of contexts. The key tool to the understanding is a newly defined sign of the tropical determinant, which shares remarkably many properties with the ordinary sign of the determinant of a matrix. The methods are used to obtain an optimal tropical convex hull algorithm in two dimensions.
Large-determinant sign matrices of order 4k+1
The Hadamard maximal determinant problem asks for the largest n-by-n determinant with entries in {+1,-1}. When n is congruent to 1 (mod 4), the maximal excess construction of Farmakis & Kounias has been the most successful general method for constructing large (though seldom maximal) determinants. For certain small n, however, still larger determinants have been known; several new records were recently reported in ArXiv preprint math.CO/0304410 . Here, we define ``3-normalized'' n-by-n Hadamard matrices, and construct large-determinant matrices of order n+1 from them. Our constructions account for most of the previous ``small n'' records, and set new records when n=37, 49, 65, 73, 77, 85, 93, and 97, most of which are beyond the reach of the maximal excess technique. We conjecture that our n=37 determinant, 72 x 9^{17} x 2^{36}, achieves the global maximum.
New lower bounds for the maximal determinant problem
We report new world records for the maximal determinant of an n-by-n matrix with entries +/-1. Using various techniques, we beat existing records for n=22, 23, 27, 29, 31, 33, 34, 35, 39, 45, 47, 53, 63, 69, 73, 77, 79, 93, and 95, and we present the record-breaking matrices here. We conjecture that our n=22 value attains the globally maximizing determinant in its dimension. We also tabulate new records for n=67, 75, 83, 87, 91 and 99, dimensions for which no previous claims have been made. The relevant matrices in all these dimensions, along with other pertinent information, are posted at http://www.indiana.edu/~maxdet \.

Using multiple q-integrals and a determinant evaluation, we establish a multivariable extension of Bailey's nonterminating 10-phi-9 transformation.
From this result, we deduce new multivariable terminating 10-phi-9 transformations, 8-phi-7 summations and other identities. We also use similar methods to derive new multivariable 1-psi-1 summations. Some of our results are extended to the case of elliptic hypergeometric series.
A note on sum of k-th power of Horadam's sequence
Let $w_{n+2}=pw_{n+1}+qw_{n}$ for $n\geq0$ with $w_0=a$ and $w_1=b$. In this paper we find an explicit expression, in terms of determinants, for $\sum_{n\geq0} w_n^kx^n$ for any $k\geq1$. As a consequence, we derive all the previously known results for this kind of problems, as well as many new results.
Complexity and Completeness of Immanants
Immanants are polynomial functions of n by n matrices attached to irreducible characters of the symmetric group S_n, or equivalently to Young diagrams of size n. Immanants include determinants and permanents as extreme cases. Valiant proved that computation of permanents is a complete problem in his algebraic model of NP theory, i.e., it is VNP-complete. We prove that computation of immanants is VNP-complete if the immanants are attached to a family of diagrams whose separation is $Ω(n^δ)$ for some $δ>0$. We define the separation of a diagram to be the largest number of overhanging boxes contained in a single row. Our theorem proves a conjecture of Buergisser for a large variety of families, and in particular we recover with new proofs his VNP-completeness results for hooks and rectangles.

Let A=(a_(ij)) be the generic n by n circulant matrix given by a_(ij)=x_(i+j), with subscripts on x interpreted mod n. Define d(n) (resp. p(n)) to be the number of terms in the determinant (resp. permanent) of A. The function p(n) is well-known and has several combinatorial interpretations. The function d(n), on the other hand, has not been studied previously. We show that when n is a prime power, d(n)=p(n). The proof uses symmetric functions.

The main motivation for this work was to find an explicit formula for a "Szego-regularized" determinant of a zeroth order pseudodifferential operator (PsDO) on a Zoll manifold. The idea of the Szego-regularization was suggested by V. Guillemin and K. Okikiolu. They have computed the second term in a Szego type expansion on a Zoll manifold of an arbitrary dimension. In the present work we compute the third asymptotic term in any dimension. In the case of dimension 2, our formula gives the above mentioned expression for the Szego-redularized determinant of a zeroth order PsDO. The proof uses a new combinatorial identity, which generalizes a formula due to G.A. Hunt and F.J. Dyson. This identity is related to the distribution of the maximum of a random walk with i.i.d. steps on the real line. The full version of this paper is also available, math.FA/0212275.

We give new general formulas for the asymptotics of the number of spanning trees of a large graph. A special case answers a question of McKay (1983) for regular graphs. The general answer involves a quantity for infinite graphs that we call "tree entropy", which we show is a logarithm of a normalized determinant of the graph Laplacian for infinite graphs. Tree entropy is also expressed using random walks. We relate tree entropy to the metric entropy of the uniform spanning forest process on quasi-transitive amenable graphs, extending a result of Burton and Pemantle (1993).
