Schubert Polynomials and Quiver Formulas
Published in Duke Math Journal, Volume 122, Issue 1, 125-143 (2004) • View PublicationBIB
The work of Buch and Fulton established a formula for a general kind of degeneracy locus associated to an oriented quiver of type $A$. The main ingredients in this formula are Schur determinants and certain integers, the quiver coefficients, which generalize the classical Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Our aim in this paper is to prove a positive combinatorial formula for the quiver coefficients when the rank conditions defining the degeneracy locus are given by a permutation. In particular, this gives new expansions for Fulton's universal Schubert polynomials and the Schubert polynomials of Lascoux and Schützenberger.

Identities for Tribonacci-related sequences
We establish some identities relating two sequences that are, as explained, related to the Tribonacci sequence. One of these sequences bears the same resemblance to the Tribonacci sequence as the Lucas sequence does to the Fibonacci sequence. Defining a matrix that we call Tribomatrix, which extends the Fibonacci matrix, we see that the other sequence is related to the sum of the determinants of the 2nd order principal minors of this matrix.

The Resultant of an Unmixed Bivariate System
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper gives an explicit method for computing the resultant of any sparse unmixed bivariate system with given support. We construct square matrices whose determinant is exactly the resultant. The matrices constructed are of hybrid Sylvester and Bézout type. We make use of the exterior algebra techniques of Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Schreyer.

Matrices autosimilaires
We describe a class of matrices whose determinants are trivial to compute. A nice example of such a matrix is given by considering the symmetric matrix with entries {i+j choose i} (mod 2) in {0,1}, 0 <= i,j < n the binomial coefficients modulo 2 represented by {0,1}. The determinant of the above matrix is then closely related to the Thue-Morse sequence counting digits modulo 2 of binary integers.

Symmetric Functions and B_N-invariant Spherical Harmonics
Published in J.Phys. A: Math. Gen. 35 (2002), 10391-10408 • View PublicationBIB
The wave functions of a quantum isotropic harmonic oscillator in N-space modified by barriers at the coordinate hyperplanes can be expressed in terms of certain generalized spherical harmonics. These are associated with a product-type weight function on the sphere. Their analysis is carried out by means of differential-difference operators. The symmetries of this system involve the Weyl group of type B, generated by permutations and changes of sign of the coordinates. A new basis for symmetric functions as well as an explicit transition matrix to the monomial basis is constructed. This basis leads to a basis for invariant spherical harmonics. The determinant of the Gram matrix for the basis in the natural inner product over the sphere is evaluated, and there is a formula for the evaluation of the basis elements at (1,1,...,1). When the underlying parameter is specialized to zero, the basis consists of ordinary spherical harmonics with cube group symmetry, as used for wave functions of electrons in crystals. The harmonic oscillator can also be considered as a degenerate interaction-free spin Calogero model.

A new way to deal with Izergin-Korepin determinant at root of unity
Published • View PublicationBIB
I consider the partition function of the inhomogeneous 6-vertex model defined on the $n$ by $n$ square lattice. This function depends on 2n spectral parameters $x_i$ and $y_i$ attached to the horizontal and vertical lines respectively. In the case of domain wall boundary conditions it is given by Izergin-Korepin determinant. For $q$ being a root of unity the partition function satisfies to a special linear functional equation. This equation is particularly good when the crossing parameter $η=2π/3$. In this case it can be used for solving some of the problems related to the enumeration of alternating sign matrices. In particular, it is possible to reproduce the refined ASM distribution discovered by Mills, Robbins and Rumsey and proved by Zeilberger. Further, it is well known that the partition function is symmetric in the $\{x\}$ and as well in the $\{y\}$ variables. I have found that in the case of $η=2π/3$, the partition function is symmetric in the union $\{x\} \cup \{y\}$! This nice symmetry is used to find some relations between the numbers of such alternating sign matrices of order $n$ whose two '1' are located in fixed positions on the boundary of the matrices. Finally I derive the equation giving `top-bottom double refined' ASM distribution.

Boundary correlation functions of the six-vertex model
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 35, 5525-5541 (2002) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the six-vertex model on an $N \times N$ square lattice with the domain wall boundary conditions. Boundary one-point correlation functions of the model are expressed as determinants of $N\times N$ matrices, generalizing the known result for the partition function. In the free fermion case the explicit answers are obtained. The introduced correlation functions are closely related to the problem of enumeration of alternating sign matrices and domino tilings.
Homogeneous multivariate polynomials with the half-plane property
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 32, 88-187 (2004) • View PublicationBIB
A polynomial P in n complex variables is said to have the "half-plane property" (or Hurwitz property) if it is nonvanishing whenever all the variables lie in the open right half-plane. Such polynomials arise in combinatorics, reliability theory, electrical circuit theory and statistical mechanics. A particularly important case is when the polynomial is homogeneous and multiaffine: then it is the (weighted) generating polynomial of an r-uniform set system. We prove that the support (set of nonzero coefficients) of a homogeneous multiaffine polynomial with the half-plane property is necessarily the set of bases of a matroid. Conversely, we ask: For which matroids M does the basis generating polynomial P_{B(M)} have the half-plane property? Not all matroids have the half-plane property, but we find large classes that do: all sixth-root-of-unity matroids, and a subclass of transversal (or cotransversal) matroids that we call "nice". Furthermore, the class of matroids with the half-plane property is closed under minors, duality, direct sums, 2-sums, series and parallel connection, full-rank matroid union, and some special cases of principal truncation, principal extension, principal cotruncation and principal coextension. Our positive results depend on two distinct (and apparently unrelated) methods for constructing polynomials with the half-plane property: a determinant construction (exploiting "energy" arguments), and a permanent construction (exploiting the Heilmann-Lieb theorem on matching polynomials). We conclude with a list of open questions.

Recursion relations for Unitary integrals, Combinatorics and the Toeplitz Lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Toeplitz determinants (of increasing size) associated with the symbols $exp{t(z+z^{-1})}$ or $(1-ξ{z})^α (1-ξ{z^{-1}})^β$ satisfy recursion relations, thus expressing all the Toeplitz determinants as a rational function of the first few determinants. A. Borodin found these relations using Riemann-Hilbert methods. The nature of Borodin's relations pointed towards the Toeplitz lattice and its Virasoro algebra, as developed by the authors. In this paper, we take the Toeplitz and Virasoro approach for a fairly large class of symbols, leading to a systematic and simple way of generating such recursion relations. The latter are very naturally expressed in terms of the $L$-matrices appearing in the Lax pair for the Toeplitz lattice equations. As a surprise, we find, compared to Borodin's, a different set of relations, except for the 3-step relations associated with the symbol $ e^{t(z+z^{-1})}$. Moreover, these recursion relations define an invariant manifold for the Toeplitz lattice. This leads to a "discrete Painlevé property" (singularity confinement) for the rational recursion relations, as a consequence of the classical ``continuous Painlevé property" for the Toeplitz lattice.

Evaluations of some determinants of matrices related to the Pascal triangle

We prove several evaluations of determinants of matrices, the entries of which are given by the recurrence $a_{i,j}=a_{i-1,j}+a_{i,j-1}$, or variations thereof. These evaluations were either conjectured or extend conjectures by Roland Bacher [J. Théorie Nombres Bordeaux 13 (2001), to appear; see http://arxiv.org/abs/math.CO/0109013].

Schur Partial Derivative Operators
Published in European J. Combin. 26 (2005), no. 6, 785--794 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice diagram is a finite list L=((p_1,q_1),...,(p_n,q_n) of lattice cells. The corresponding lattice diagram determinant is Δ_L(X;Y)=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|. These lattice diagram determinants are crucial in the study of the so-called ``n! conjecture'' of A. Garsia and M. Haiman. The space M_L is the space spanned by all partial derivatives of Δ_L(X;Y). The ``shift operators'', which are particular partial symmetric derivative operators are very useful in the comprehension of the structure of the M_L spaces. We describe here how a Schur function partial derivative operator acts on lattice diagrams with distinct cells in the positive quadrant.

Discrete gap probabilities and discrete Painleve equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that Fredholm determinants of the form det(1-K_s), where K_s is the restriction of either the discrete Bessel kernel or the discrete {}_2F_1 kernel to {s,s+1,...}, can be expressed through solutions of discrete Painleve II and V equations, respectively. These Fredholm determinants can also be viewed as distribution functions of the first part of the random partitions distributed according to a poissonized Plancherel measure and a z-measure, or as normalized Toeplitz determinants with symbols exp(η(u+1/u)) and (1+u)^z(1+ξ/u)^{z'}. The proofs are based on a general formalism involving discrete integrable operators and discrete Riemann-Hilbert problem. A continuous version of the formalism has been worked out in math-ph/0111007.
The XXZ spin chain at $Δ=- {1/2}$: Bethe roots, symmetric functions and determinants
Published in J. Math. Phys. 43 (2002), 4135-4146 • View PublicationBIB
A number of conjectures have been given recently concerning the connection between the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain at $Δ= - \frac12$ and various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. Here we use the integrability of the XXZ chain to gain further insight into these developments. In doing so we obtain a number of new results using Baxter's $Q$ function for the XXZ chain for periodic, twisted and open boundary conditions. These include expressions for the elementary symmetric functions evaluated at the groundstate solution of the Bethe roots. In this approach Schur functions play a central role and enable us to derive determinant expressions which appear in certain natural double products over the Bethe roots. When evaluated these give rise to the numbers counting different symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices.

Cumulants, lattice paths, and orthogonal polynomials

A formula expressing free cumulants in terms of the Jacobi parameters of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials is derived. It combines Flajolet's theory of continued fractions and Lagrange inversion. For the converse we discuss Gessel-Viennot theory to express Hankel determinants in terms of various cumulants.

A New Matrix-Tree Theorem
The classical Matrix-Tree Theorem allows one to list the spanning trees of a graph by monomials in the expansion of the determinant of a certain matrix. We prove that in the case of three-graphs (that is, hypergraphs whose edges have exactly three vertices) the spanning trees are generated by the Pfaffian of a suitably defined matrix. This result can be interpreted topologically as an expression for the lowest order term of the Alexander-Conway polynomial of an algebraically split link. We also prove some algebraic properties of our Pfaffian-tree polynomial.

We study the map which sends vectors of polynomials into their Wronski determinants. This defines a projection map of a Grassmann variety which we call a Wronski map. Our main result is computation of degrees of the real Wronski maps. Connections with real algebraic geometry and control theory are described.

Vanishing ideals of Lattice Diagram determinants
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 99 (2002), no. 2, 244-260 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice diagram is a finite set $L=\{(p_1,q_1),... ,(p_n,q_n)\}$ of lattice cells in the positive quadrant. The corresponding lattice diagram determinant is $Δ_L(\X;\Y)=\det \| x_i^{p_j}y_i^{q_j} \|$. The space $M_L$ is the space spanned by all partial derivatives of $Δ_L(\X;\Y)$. We denote by $M_L^0$ the $Y$-free component of $M_L$. For $μ$ a partition of $n+1$, we denote by $μ/ij$ the diagram obtained by removing the cell $(i,j)$ from the Ferrers diagram of $μ$. Using homogeneous partially symmetric polynomials, we give here a dual description of the vanishing ideal of the space $M_μ^0$ and we give the first known description of the vanishing ideal of $M_{μ/ij}^0$.

Correlation function of Schur process with application to local geometry of a random 3-dimensional Young diagram
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schur process is a time-dependent analog of the Schur measure on partitions studied in math.RT/9907127. Our first result is that the correlation functions of the Schur process are determinants with a kernel that has a nice contour integral representation in terms of the parameters of the process. This general result is then applied to a particular specialization of the Schur process, namely to random 3-dimensional Young diagrams. The local geometry of a large random 3-dimensional diagram is described in terms of a determinantal point process on a 2-dimensional lattice with the incomplete beta function kernel (which generalizes the discrete sine kernel). A brief discussion of the universality of this answer concludes the paper.
