A determinantal formula for the Hilbert series of one-sided ladder determinantal rings
Published in in: Algebra, Arithmetic and Geometry with Applications, C. Christensen, C. Bajaj, G. Sundaram and A. Sathaye, eds., Springer-Verlag, New York, 2003, pp. 525-552. • View PublicationBIB
We give a formula that expresses the Hilbert series of one-sided ladder determinantal rings, up to a trivial factor, in form of a determinant. This allows the convenient computation of these Hilbert series. The formula follows from a determinantal formula for a generating function for families of nonintersecting lattice paths that stay inside a one-sided ladder-shaped region, in which the paths are counted with respect to turns.

On the determinant formulas by Borodin, Okounkov, Baik, Deift, and Rains
We give alternative proofs to (block case versions of) some formulas for Toeplitz and Fredholm determinants established recently by the authors of the title. Our proof of the Borodin-Okounkov formula is very short and direct. The proof of the Baik-Deift-Rains formulas is based on standard manipulations with Wiener-Hopf factorizations.

A Fredholm Determinant Identity and the Convergence of Moments for Random Young Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain an identity between Fredholm determinants of two kinds of operators, one acting on functions on the unit circle and the other acting on functions on a subset of the integers. This identity is a generalization of an identity between a Toeplitz determinant and a Fredholm determinant that has appeared in the random permutation context. Using this identity, we prove, in particular, convergence of moments for arbitrary rows of a random Young diagram under Plancherel measure.

Random Walk in an Alcove of an Affine Weyl Group, and Non-Colliding Random Walks on an Interval
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use a reflection argument, introduced by Gessel and Zeilberger, to count the number of k-step walks between two points which stay within a chamber of a Weyl group. We apply this technique to walks in the alcoves of the classical affine Weyl groups. In all cases, we get determinant formulas for the number of k-step walks. One important example is the region m>x_1>x_2>...>x_n>0, which is a rescaled alcove of the affine Weyl group C_n. If each coordinate is considered to be an independent particle, this models n non-colliding random walks on the interval (0,m). Another case models n non-colliding random walks on the circle.

A non-automatic (!) application of Gosper's algorithm evaluates a determinant from tiling enumeration
Published in Rocky Mountain J. Math. 32 (2002), 589-605. • View PublicationBIB
We evaluate the determinant $\det_{1\leq i,j\leq n}(\binom{x+y+j}{x-i+2j}-\binom{x+y+j}{x+i+2j})$, which gives the number of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with cut off corners. A particularly interesting feature of this evaluation is that it requires the proof of a certain hypergeometric identity which we accomplish by using Gosper's algorithm in a non-automatic fashion.

Double Schubert polynomials and degeneracy loci for the classical groups
Published in Annales de l'Institut Fourier 52 (2002), 1681-1727 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a theory of double Schubert polynomials P_w(X,Y) for the Lie types B, C, D which naturally extends the family of Lascoux of Schutzenberger in type A. These polynomials satisfy positivity, orthogonality, and stability properties, and represent the classes of Schubert varieties and degeneracy loci of vector bundles. When w is a maximal Grassmannian element of the Weyl group, P_w(X,Y) can be expressed in terms of Schur-type determinants and Pfaffians, in analogy with the type A formula of Kempf and Laksov. An example, motivated by quantum cohomology, shows that there are no Chern class formulas for degeneracy loci of ``isotropic morphisms'' of bundles.

Integrable Lattices: Random Matrices and Random Permutations
Published in "Random Matrices and Their Applications" : MSRI-publication #40, Cambridge University Press, 2001 • View PublicationBIB
These lectures present a survey of recent developments in the area of random matrices (finite and infinite) and random permutations. These probabilistic problems suggest matrix integrals (or Fredholm determinants), which arise very naturally as integrals over the tangent space to symmetric spaces, as integrals over groups and finally as integrals over symmetric spaces. An important part of these lectures is devoted to showing that these matrix integrals, upon apropriately adding time-parameters, are natural tau-functions for integrable lattices, like the Toda, Pfaff and Toeplitz lattices, but also for integrable PDE's, like the KdV equation. These matrix integrals or Fredholm determinants also satisfy Virasoro constraints, which combined with the integrable equations lead to (partial) differential equations for the original probabilities.

Symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices under one roof
Published in Ann. of Math. (2) 156 (2002), no. 3, 835-866 • View PublicationBIB
In a previous article [math.CO/9712207], we derived the alternating-sign matrix (ASM) theorem from the Izergin-Korepin determinant for a partition function for square ice with domain wall boundary. Here we show that the same argument enumerates three other symmetry classes of alternating-sign matrices: VSASMs (vertically symmetric ASMs), even HTSASMs (half-turn-symmetric ASMs), and even QTSASMs (quarter-turn-symmetric ASMs). The VSASM enumeration was conjectured by Mills; the others by Robbins [math.CO/0008045]. We introduce several new types of ASMs: UASMs (ASMs with a U-turn side), UUASMs (two U-turn sides), OSASMs (off-diagonally symmetric ASMs), OOSASMs (off-diagonally, off-antidiagonally symmetric), and UOSASMs (off-diagonally symmetric with U-turn sides). UASMs generalize VSASMs, while UUASMs generalize VHSASMs (vertically and horizontally symmetric ASMs) and another new class, VHPASMs (vertically and horizontally perverse). OSASMs, OOSASMs, and UOSASMs are related to the remaining symmetry classes of ASMs, namely DSASMs (diagonally symmetric), DASASMs (diagonally, anti-diagonally symmetric), and TSASMs (totally symmetric ASMs). We enumerate several of these new classes, and we provide several 2-enumerations and 3-enumerations. Our main technical tool is a set of multi-parameter determinant and Pfaffian formulas generalizing the Izergin-Korepin determinant for ASMs and the Tsuchiya determinant for UASMs [solv-int/9804010]. We evaluate specializations of the determinants and Pfaffians using the factor exhaustion method.

New Permanent Estimators via Non-Commutative Determinants
We introduce a new notion of the determinant, called symmetrized determinant, for a square matrix with the entries in an associative algebra $Å$. The monomial expansion of the symmetrized determinant is obtained from the standard expansion of the commutative determinant by averaging the products of entries of the matrix in all possible orders. We show that for any fixed finite-dimensional associative algebra $Å$, the symmetrized determinant of an $n\times n$ matrix with the entries in $Å$ can be computed in polynomial in $n$ time (the degree of the polynomial is linear in the dimension of $Å$). Then, for every associative algebra $Å$ endowed with a scalar product and unbiased probability measure, we construct a randomized polynomial time algorithm to estimate the permanent of non-negative matrices. We conjecture that if $Å=\Mat(d, {\Bbb R})$ is the algebra of $d\times d$ real matrices endowed with the standard scalar product and Gaussian measure, the algorithm approximates the permanent of a non-negative $n \times n$ matrix within $O(γ_d^n)$ factor, where $\lim_{d \longrightarrow +\infty} γ_d=1$. Finally, we provide some informal arguments why the conjecture might be true.

From the Bethe Ansatz to the Gessel-Viennot Theorem
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 3 (1999) 251-263 • View PublicationBIB
We state and prove several theorems that demonstrate how the coordinate Bethe Ansatz for the eigenvectors of suitable transfer matrices of a generalised inhomogeneous five-vertex model on the square lattice, given certain conditions hold, is equivalent to the Gessel-Viennot determinant for the number of configurations of $N$ non-intersecting directed lattice paths, or vicious walkers, with various boundary conditions. Our theorems are sufficiently general to allow generalisation to any regular planar lattice.

Bijective proofs for Schur function identities which imply Dodgson's condensation formula and Plücker relations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a ``method'' for bijective proofs for determinant identities, which is based on translating determinants to Schur functions by the Jacobi--Trudi identity. We illustrate this ``method'' by generalizing a bijective construction (which was first used by Goulden) to a class of Schur function identities, from which we shall obtain bijective proofs for Dodgson's condensation formula, Plücker relations and a recent identity of the second author.

This paper, a continuation of math.CO/9909169, connects the analysis of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence of inhomogeneous random words to a Riemann-Hilbert problem and an associated system of integrable PDEs. In particular, we show that the Poissonization of the distribution function of this length can be identified as the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function.

Schur's old determinant proves a brand-new theorem of Garrett-Ismail-Stanton
Garrett, Ismail, and Stanton gave a general formula that contains the Rogers-Ramanjuan identities as special cases. We show how easy this is when using a determinant that Schur introduced in 1917.

Application of Tree-like Structure of Graph to Matrix Analysis
Formulas for matrix determinants, algebraic adjunctions, characteristic polynomial coefficients, components of eigenvectors are obtained in the form of signless sums of matrix elements products taking by special graphs. Signless formulas are very important for singular and stochastic problems. They are also useful for spectral analysis of large very sparse matrices.

Extremal metrics on graphs I

We define a number of natural (from geometric and combinatorial points of view) deformation spaces of valuations on finite graphs, and study functions over these deformation spaces. These functions include both direct metric invariants (girth, diameter), and spectral invariants (the determinant of the Laplace operator, or complexity; bottom non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplace operator). We show that almost all of these functions are, surprisingly, convex, and we characterize the valuations extremizing these invariant

Random vicious walks and random matrices

Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Enumeration of lozenge tilings of hexagons with a central triangular hole
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 95 (2001), 251-334 • View PublicationBIB
We deal with unweighted and weighted enumerations of lozenge tilings of a hexagon with side lengths $a,b+m,c,a+m,b,c+m$, where an equilateral triangle of side length $m$ has been removed from the center. We give closed formulas for the plain enumeration and for a certain $(-1)$-enumeration of these lozenge tilings. In the case that $a=b=c$, we also provide closed formulas for certain weighted enumerations of those lozenge tilings that are cyclically symmetric. For $m=0$, the latter formulas specialize to statements about weighted enumerations of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. One such specialization gives a proof of a conjecture of Stembridge on a certain weighted count of cyclically symmetric plane partitions. The tools employed in our proofs are nonstandard applications of the theory of nonintersecting lattice paths and determinant evaluations. In particular, we evaluate the determinants $\det_{0\le i,j\le n-1}\big(\om δ_{ij}+\binom {m+i+j}j\big)$, where $\om$ is any 6th root of unity. These determinant evaluations are variations of a famous result due to Andrews (Invent. Math. 53 (1979), 193--225), which corresponds to $\om=1$.

Permanents, Pfaffian orientations, and even directed circuits
Published in Ann. of Math. (2) 150 (1999), no. 3, 929-975 • View PublicationBIB
Given a 0-1 square matrix A, when can some of the 1's be changed to -1's in such a way that the permanent of A equals the determinant of the modified matrix? When does a real square matrix have the property that every real matrix with the same sign pattern (that is, the corresponding entries either have the same sign or are both zero) is nonsingular? When is a hypergraph with n vertices and n hyperedges minimally nonbipartite? When does a bipartite graph have a "Pfaffian orientation"? Given a digraph, does it have no directed circuit of even length? Given a digraph, does it have a subdivision with no even directed circuit? It is known that all of the above problems are equivalent. We prove a structural characterization of the feasible instances, which implies a polynomial-time algorithm to solve all of the above problems. The structural characterization says, roughly speaking, that a bipartite graph has a Pfaffian orientation if and only if it can be obtained by piecing together (in a specified way) planar bipartite graphs and one sporadic nonplanar bipartite graph.

It is proved that the limiting distribution of the length of the longest weakly increasing subsequence in an inhomogeneous random word is related to the distribution function for the eigenvalues of a certain direct sum of Gaussian unitary ensembles subject to an overall constraint that the eigenvalues lie in a hyperplane.
