This paper finds the bulk local limit of the swap process of uniformly random sorting networks. The limit object is defined through a deterministic procedure, a local version of the Edelman-Greene algorithm, applied to a two dimensional determinantal point process with explicit kernel. The latter describes the asymptotic joint law near $0$ of the eigenvalues of the corners in the antisymmetric Gaussian Unitary Ensemble. In particular, the limiting law of the first time a given swap appears in a random sorting network is identified with the limiting distribution of the closest to $0$ eigenvalue in the antisymmetric GUE. Moreover, the asymptotic gap, in the bulk, between appearances of a given swap is the Gaudin-Mehta law -- the limiting universal distribution for gaps between eigenvalues of real symmetric random matrices.
The proofs rely on the determinantal structure and a double contour integral representation for the kernel of random Poissonized Young tableaux of arbitrary shape.
A quantization of the harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group

The present work stemmed from the study of the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group U(\infty). That problem consisted in the decomposition of a certain 4-parameter family of unitary representations, which replace the nonexisting two-sided regular representation (Olshanski, J. Funct. Anal., 2003, arXiv:0109193). The required decomposition is governed by certain probability measures on an infinite-dimensional space Ω, which is a dual object to U(\infty). A way to describe those measures is to convert them into determinantal point processes on the real line, it turned out that their correlation kernels are computable in explicit form --- they admit a closed expression in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function 2-F-1 (Borodin and Olshanski, Ann. Math., 2005, arXiv:0109194).
In the present work we describe a (nonevident) q-discretization of the whole construction. This leads us to a new family of determinantal point processes. We reveal its connection with an exotic finite system of q-discrete orthogonal polynomials --- the so-called pseudo big q-Jacobi polynomials. The new point processes live on a double q-lattice and we show that their correlation kernels are expressed through the basic hypergeometric function 2-φ-1.
A crucial novel ingredient of our approach is an extended version G of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph (the conventional graph describes the Gelfand-Tsetlin branching rule for irreducible representations of unitary groups). We find the q-boundary of G, thus extending previously known results (Gorin, Adv. Math., 2012, arXiv:1011.1769).

Introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin, the Schur process is known to be a determinantal point process, meaning that its correlation functions are minors of a single correlation kernel matrix. Previously, this was derived using determinantal expressions for the skew-Schur polynomials. In this paper we obtain this result in a different way, using the fact that the Schur polynomials are eigenfunctions of Macdonald difference operators.
Tacnode GUE-minor Processes and Double Aztec Diamonds

We study random domino tilings of a Double Aztec diamond, a region consisting of two overlapping Aztec diamonds. The random tilings give rise to two discrete determinantal point processes called the K-and L-particle processes. The correlation kernel of the K-particles was derived in Adler, Johansson and van Moerbeke (2011), who used it to study the limit process of the K-particles with different weights for horizontal and vertical dominos. Let the size of both, the Double Aztec diamond and the overlap, tend to infinity such that the two arctic ellipses just touch; then they show that the fluctuations of the K-particles near the tangency point tend to the tacnode process. In this paper, we find the limiting point process of the L-particles in the overlap when the weights of the horizontal and vertical dominos are equal, or asymptotically equal, as the Double Aztec diamond grows, while keeping the overlap finite. In this case the two limiting arctic circles are tangent in the overlap and the behavior of the L-particles in the vicinity of the point of tangency can then be viewed as two colliding GUE-minor process, which we call the tacnode GUE minor process. As part of the derivation of the kernel for the L-particles we find the inverse Kasteleyn matrix for the dimer model version of Double Aztec diamond.

These are lecture notes for a mini-course given at the St. Petersburg School in Probability and Statistical Physics in June 2012. Topics include integrable models of random growth, determinantal point processes, Schur processes and Markov dynamics on them, Macdonald processes and their application to asymptotics of directed polymers in random media.
On adding a list of numbers (and other one-dependent determinantal processes)

Adding a column of numbers produces "carries" along the way. We show that random digits produce a pattern of carries with a neat probabilistic description: the carries form a one-dependent determinantal point process. This makes it easy to answer natural questions: How many carries are typical? Where are they located? We show that many further examples, from combinatorics, algebra and group theory, have essentially the same neat formulae, and that any one-dependent point process on the integers is determinantal. The examples give a gentle introduction to the emerging fields of one-dependent and determinantal point processes.

We introduce discrete time Markov chains that preserve uniform measures on boxed plane partitions. Elementary Markov steps change the size of the box from (a x b x c) to ((a-1) x (b+1) x c) or ((a+1) x (b-1) x c). Algorithmic realization of each step involves O((a+b)c) operations. One application is an efficient perfect random sampling algorithm for uniformly distributed boxed plane partitions.
Trajectories of our Markov chains can be viewed as random point configurations in the three-dimensional lattice. We compute the bulk limits of the correlation functions of the resulting random point process on suitable two-dimensional sections. The limiting correlation functions define a two-dimensional determinantal point processes with certain Gibbs properties.

We study a two-dimensional family of probability measures on infinite Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes induced by a distinguished family of extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. These measures are unitary group analogs of the well-known Plancherel measures for symmetric groups. We show that any measure from our family defines a determinantal point process, and we prove that in appropriate scaling limits, such processes converge to two different extensions of the discrete sine process as well as to the extended Airy and Pearcey processes.

Consider $a$ particles performing simple, symmetric, non-intersecting random walks, starting at points $2(j-1)$, $1\le j\le a$ at time 0 and ending at $2(j-1)+c-b$ at time $b+c$. This can also be interpreted as a random rhombus tiling of an $abc$-hexagon, or as a random boxed planar partition confined to a rectangular box with side lengths $a$, $b$ and $c$. The positions of the particles at all times gives a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel given in terms of the associated Hahn polynomials. In a suitable scaling limit we obtain non-intersecting Brownian motions which can be related to Dysons's Hermitian Brownian motion via a suitable transformation.
Increasing subsequences and the hard-to-soft edge transition in matrix ensembles

Our interest is in the cumulative probabilities Pr(L(t) \le l) for the maximum length of increasing subsequences in Poissonized ensembles of random permutations, random fixed point free involutions and reversed random fixed point free involutions. It is shown that these probabilities are equal to the hard edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively. The gap probabilities can be written as a sum over correlations for certain determinantal point processes. From these expressions a proof can be given that the limiting form of Pr(L(t) \le l) in the three cases is equal to the soft edge gap probability for matrix ensembles with unitary, orthogonal and symplectic symmetry respectively, thereby reclaiming theorems due to Baik-Deift-Johansson and Baik-Rains.

Determinantal point processes have arisen in diverse settings in recent years and have been investigated intensively. We study basic combinatorial and probabilistic aspects in the discrete case. Our main results concern relationships with matroids, stochastic domination, negative association, completeness for infinite matroids, tail triviality, and a method for extension of results from orthogonal projections to positive contractions. We also present several new avenues for further investigation, involving Hilbert spaces, combinatorics, homology, and group representations, among other areas.

The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is the inductive limit of growing compact unitary groups U(N). In this paper we solve a problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) stated in the previous paper math/0109193. The problem consists in computing spectral decomposition for a remarkable 4-parameter family of characters of U(infinity). These characters generate representations which should be viewed as analogs of nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity).
The spectral decomposition of a character of U(infinity) is described by the spectral measure which lives on an infinite-dimensional space Omega of indecomposable characters. The key idea which allows us to solve the problem is to embed Omega into the space of point configurations on the real line without 2 points. This turns the spectral measure into a stochastic point process on the real line. The main result of the paper is a complete description of the processes corresponding to our concrete family of characters. We prove that each of the processes is a determinantal point process. That is, its correlation functions have determinantal form with a certain kernel. Our kernels have a special `integrable' form and are expressed through the Gauss hypergeometric function.
In simpler situations of harmonic analysis on infinite symmetric group and harmonic analysis of unitarily invariant measures on infinite hermitian matrices similar results were obtained in our papers math/9810015, math/9904010, math-ph/0010015.
Correlation function of Schur process with application to local geometry of a random 3-dimensional Young diagram

Schur process is a time-dependent analog of the Schur measure on partitions studied in math.RT/9907127. Our first result is that the correlation functions of the Schur process are determinants with a kernel that has a nice contour integral representation in terms of the parameters of the process. This general result is then applied to a particular specialization of the Schur process, namely to random 3-dimensional Young diagrams. The local geometry of a large random 3-dimensional diagram is described in terms of a determinantal point process on a 2-dimensional lattice with the incomplete beta function kernel (which generalizes the discrete sine kernel). A brief discussion of the universality of this answer concludes the paper.

We consider the asymptotics of the Plancherel measures on partitions of $n$ as $n$ goes to infinity. We prove that the local structure of a Plancherel typical partition (which we identify with a Young diagram) in the middle of the limit shape converges to a determinantal point process with the discrete sine kernel. On the edges of the limit shape, we prove that the joint distribution of suitably scaled 1st, 2nd, and so on rows of a Plancherel typical diagram converges to the corresponding distribution for eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices (given by the Airy kernel). This proves a conjecture due to Baik, Deift, and Johansson by methods different from the Riemann-Hilbert techniques used in their original papers math.CO/9810105 and math.CO/9901118 and from the combinatorial approach proposed by Okounkov in math.CO/9903176.
Our approach is based on an exact determinantal formula for the correlation functions of the poissonized Plancherel measures involving a new kernel on the 1-dimensional lattice. This kernel is expressed in terms of Bessel functions and we obtain it as a degeneration of the hypergeometric kernel from the paper math.RT/9904010 by Borodin and Olshanski. Our asymptotic analysis relies on the classical asymptotic formulas for the Bessel functions and depoissonization techniques.
