Toric degenerations of cluster varieties and cluster duality
Published in Compositio Math. 156 (2020) 2149-2206 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of a $Y$-pattern with coefficients and its geometric counterpart: a cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety with coefficients. We use these constructions to build a flat degeneration of every skew-symmetrizable specially completed cluster $\mathcal{X}$-variety $\widehat{\mathcal{X}}$ to the toric variety associated to its $\mathbf{g}$-fan. Moreover, we show that the fibers of this family are stratified in a natural way, with strata the specially completed $\mathcal{X}$-varieties encoded by $\mathrm{Star}(τ)$ for each cone $τ$ of the $\mathbf{g}$-fan. These strata degenerate to the associated toric strata of the central fiber. We further show that the family is cluster dual to $\mathcal{A}_{\mathrm{prin}}$ of Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich, and the fibers cluster dual to $\mathcal{A}_t$. Finally, we give two applications. First, we use our construction to identify the Rietsch-Williams toric degeneration of Grassmannians with the Gross-Hacking-Keel-Kontsevich degeneration in the case of $\mathrm{Gr}_2(\mathbb{C}^5)$. Next, we use it to link cluster duality to Batyrev-Borisov duality of Gorenstein toric Fanos in the context of mirror symmetry.

On the geometry of strongly flat semigroups and their generalizations
Our goal is to convince the readers that the theory of complex normal surface singularities can be a powerful tool in the study of numerical semigroups, and, in the same time, a very rich source of interesting affine and numerical semigroups. More precisely, we prove that the strongly flat semigroups, which satisfy the maximality property with respect to the Diophantine Frobenius problem, are exactly the numerical semigroups associated with negative definite Seifert homology spheres via the possible 'weights' of the generic $S^1$-orbit. Furthermore, we consider their generalization to the Seifert rational homology sphere case and prove an explicit (up to a Laufer computation sequence) formula for their Frobenius number. The singularities behind are the weighted homogeneous ones, whose several topological and analytical properties are exploited.
A Hodge filtration of logarithmic vector fields for well-generated complex reflection groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group, we construct an explicit basis for the module of vector fields with logarithmic poles along its reflection arrangement. This construction yields in particular a Hodge filtration of that module. Our approach is based on a detailed analysis of a flat connection applied to the primitive vector field. This generalizes and unifies analogous results for real reflection groups.

Sidon sets and 2-caps in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$
Published in Involve 12 (2019) 995-1003 • View PublicationBIB
For each natural number $d$, we introduce the concept of a $d$-cap in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$. A subset of $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ is called a $d$-cap if, for each $k = 1, 2, \dots, d$, no $k+2$ of the points lie on a $k$-dimensional flat. This generalizes the notion of a cap in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$. We prove that the $2$-caps in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ are exactly the Sidon sets in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$ and study the problem of determining the size of the largest $2$-cap in $\mathbb{F}_3^n$.

The structure of claw-free binary matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simple binary matroid is called claw-free if none of its rank-3 flats are independent sets. These objects can be equivalently defined as the sets $E$ of points in $\mathrm{PG}(n-1,2)$ for which $|E \cap P|$ is not a basis of $P$ for any plane $P$, or as the subsets $X$ of $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ containing no linearly independent triple $x,y,z$ for which $x+y,y+z,x+z,x+y+z \notin X$. We prove a decomposition theorem that exactly determines the structure of all claw-free matroids. The theorem states that claw-free matroids either belong to one of three particular basic classes of claw-free matroids, or can be constructed from these basic classes using a certain 'join' operation.
Generalized bent Boolean functions and strongly regular Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define the (edge-weighted) Cayley graph associated to a generalized Boolean function, introduce a notion of strong regularity and give several of its properties. We show some connections between this concept and generalized bent functions (gbent), that is, functions with flat Walsh-Hadamard spectrum. In particular, we find a complete characterization of quartic gbent functions in terms of the strong regularity of their associated Cayley graph.

Bounds on sizes of general caps in $AG(n,q)$ via the Croot-Lev-Pach polynomial method
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2016, Ellenberg and Gijswijt employed a method of Croot, Lev, and Pach to show that a maximal cap in $AG(n, q)$ has size $O(q^{cn})$ for some $c < 1$. In this paper, we show more generally that if $S$ is a subset of $AG(n, q)$ containing no $m$ points on any $(m - 2)$- flat, then $|S| < q^{c_mn}$ for some $c_m < 1$, as long as $q$ is odd or $m$ is even.
The structure of binary matroids with no induced claw or Fano plane restriction
Published • View PublicationBIB
An 'induced restriction' of a simple binary matroid $M$ is a restriction $M|F$, where $F$ is a flat of $M$. We consider the class $\mathcal{M}$ of all simple binary matroids $M$ containing neither a free matroid on three elements (which we call a 'claw'), nor a Fano plane as an induced restriction. We give an exact structure theorem for this class; two of its consequences are that the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ have unbounded critical number, while the matroids in $\mathcal{M}$ not containing the clique $M(K_5)$ as an induced restriction have critical number at most $2$.

On the structure of cube tiling codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $S$ be a set of arbitrary objects, and let $S^d=\{v_1...v_d\colon v_i\in S\}$. A polybox code is a set $V\subset S^d$ with the property that for every two words $v,w\in V$ there is $i\in [d]$ with $v_i'=w_i$, where a permutation $s\mapsto s'$ of $S$ is such that $s''=(s')'=s$ and $s'\neq s$. If $|V|=2^d$, then $V$ is called a cube tiling code. Cube tiling codes determine $2$-periodic cube tilings of $\mathbb{R}^d$ or, equivalently, tilings of the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^d=\{(x_1,\ldots ,x_d)({\rm mod} 2):(x_1,\ldots ,x_d)\in \mathbb{R}^d\}$ by translates of the unit cube as well as $r$-perfect codes in $\mathbb{Z}^d_{4r+2}$ in the maximum metric. By a structural result, cube tiling codes for $d=4$ are enumerated. It is computed that there are 27,385 non-isomorphic cube tiling codes in dimension four, and the total number of such codes is equal to 17,794,836,080,455,680. Moreover, some procedure of passing from a cube tiling code to a cube tiling code in dimensions $d\leq 5$ is given.

The Two Eyes Lemma: a linking problem for horoball necklaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the course of our work on low-volume hyperbolic 3-manifolds, we came upon a linking problem for horoball necklaces in $\mathbb{H}^3$. A horoball necklace is a collection of sequentially tangent beards (i.e. spheres) with disjoint interiors lying on a flat table (i.e. a plane) such that each bead is of diameter at most one and is tangent to the table. In this note, we analyze the possible configurations of an 8-bead necklace linking around two other diameter-one spheres on the table. We show that all the beads are forced to have diameter one, the two linked spheres are tangent, and that each bead must kiss (i.e. be tangent to) at least one of the two linked spheres. In fact, there is a 1-parameter family of distinct configurations.

A Markov Chain Sampler for Plane Curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
A plane curve is a knot diagram in which each crossing is replaced by a 4-valent vertex, and so are dual to a subset of planar quadrangulations. The aim of this paper is to introduce a new tool for sampling diagrams via sampling of plane curves. At present the most efficient method for sampling diagrams is rejection sampling, however that method is inefficient at even modest sizes. We introduce Markov chains that sample from the space of plane curves using local moves based on Reidemeister moves. By then mapping vertices on those curves to crossings we produce random knot diagrams. Combining this chain with flat histogram methods we achieve an efficient sampler of plane curves and knot diagrams. By analysing data from this chain we are able to estimate the number of knot diagrams of a given size and also compute knotting probabilities and so investigate their asymptotic behaviour.

Laminations of a graph on a pair of pants
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc., 52(6), 1038-1052, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
A lamination of a graph embedded on a surface is a collection of pairwise disjoint non-contractible simple closed curves drawn on the graph. In the case when the surface is a sphere with three punctures (a.k.a. a pair of pants), we first identify the lamination space of a graph embedded on that surface as a lattice polytope, then we characterize the polytopes that arise as the lamination space of some graph on a pair of pants. This characterizes the image of a purely topological version of the spectral map for the vector bundle Laplacian for a flat connection on a pair of pants. The proof uses a graph exploration technique akin to the peeling of planar maps.

Combinatorial analogs of topological zeta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we introduce a new matroid invariant, a combinatorial analog of the topological zeta function of a polynomial. More specifically we associate to any ranked, atomic meet-semilattice L a rational function Z(L,s), in such a way that when L is the lattice of flats of a complex hyperplane arrangement we recover the usual topological zeta function. The definition is in terms of a choice of a combinatorial analog of resolution of singularities, and the main result is that Z(L,s) does not depend on this choice and depends only on L. Known properties of the topological zeta function provide a source of potential complex realisability test for matroids.

Tilings and matroids on regular subdivisions of a triangle
In this paper we investigate a family of matroids introduced by Ardila and Billey to study one-dimensional intersections of complete flag arrangements of $\mathbb{C}^n$. The set of lattice points $P_n$ inside the equilateral triangle $S_n$ obtained by intersecting the nonnegative cone of $\mathbb{R}^3$ with the affine hyperplane $x_1 + x_2 + x_3 = n-1$ is the ground set of a matroid $\mathcal{T}_n$ whose independent sets are the subsets $S$ of $P_n$ satisfying that $|S \cap P| \le k$ for each translation $P$ of the set $P_k$. Here we study the structure of the matroids $\mathcal{T}_n$ in connection with tilings of $S_n$ into unit triangles, rhombi, and trapezoids. First, we characterize the independent sets of $\mathcal{T}_n$, extending a characterization of the bases of $\mathcal{T}_n$ already given by Ardila and Billey. Then we explore the connection between the rank function of $\mathcal{T}_n$ and the tilings of $S_n$ into unit triangles and rhombi. Then we provide a tiling characterization of the circuits of $\mathcal{T}_n$. We conclude with a geometric characterization of the flats of $\mathcal{T}_n$.

Generalized Laminar Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Nested matroids were introduced by Crapo in 1965 and have appeared frequently in the literature since then. A flat of a matroid $M$ is Hamiltonian if it has a spanning circuit. A matroid $M$ is nested if and only if its Hamiltonian flats form a chain under inclusion; $M$ is laminar if and only if, for every $1$-element independent set $X$, the Hamiltonian flats of $M$ containing $X$ form a chain under inclusion. We generalize these notions to define the classes of $k$-closure-laminar and $k$-laminar matroids. This paper focuses on structural properties of these classes noting that, while the second class is always minor-closed, the first is if and only if $k \le 3$. The main results are excluded-minor characterizations for the classes of 2-laminar and 2-closure-laminar matroids.
Perfect graphs with polynomially computable kernels
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a directed graph, a kernel is a subset of vertices that is both stable and absorbing. Not all digraphs have a kernel, but a theorem due to Boros and Gurvich guarantees the existence of a kernel in every clique-acyclic orientation of a perfect graph. However, an open question is the complexity status of the computation of a kernel in such a digraph. Our main contribution is to prove new polynomiality results for subfamilies of perfect graphs, among which are claw-free perfect graphs and chordal graphs. Our results are based on the design of kernel computation methods with respect to two graph operations: clique-cutset decomposition and augmentation of flat edges. We also prove that deciding the existence of a kernel - and computing it if it exists - is polynomial in every orientation of a chordal or a circular-arc graph, even not clique-acyclic.

Convexity in ordered matroids and the generalized external order
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(3) (2020), P3.41 • View PublicationBIB
In 1980, Las Vergnas defined a notion of discrete convexity for oriented matroids, which Edelman subsequently related to the theory of anti-exchange closure functions and convex geometries. In this paper, we use generalized matroid activity to construct a convex geometry associated with an ordered, unoriented matroid. The construction in particular yields a new type of representability for an ordered matroid defined by the affine representability of its corresponding convex geometry. The lattice of convex sets of this convex geometry induces an ordering on the matroid independent sets which extends the external active order on matroid bases. We show that this generalized external order forms a supersolvable meet-distributive lattice refining the geometric lattice of flats, and we uniquely characterize the lattices isomorphic to the external order of a matroid. Finally, we introduce a new trivariate generating function generalizing the matroid Tutte polynomial.
Bounds on Binary Locally Repairable Codes Tolerating Multiple Erasures
Recently, locally repairable codes has gained significant interest for their potential applications in distributed storage systems. However, most constructions in existence are over fields with size that grows with the number of servers, which makes the systems computationally expensive and difficult to maintain. Here, we study linear locally repairable codes over the binary field, tolerating multiple local erasures. We derive bounds on the minimum distance on such codes, and give examples of LRCs achieving these bounds. Our main technical tools come from matroid theory, and as a byproduct of our proofs, we show that the lattice of cyclic flats of a simple binary matroid is atomic.

Pseudo-edge unfoldings of convex polyhedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
A pseudo-edge graph of a convex polyhedron K is a 3-connected embedded graph in K whose vertices coincide with those of K, whose edges are distance minimizing geodesics, and whose faces are convex. We construct a convex polyhedron K in Euclidean 3-space with a pseudo-edge graph with respect to which K is not unfoldable. The proof is based on a result of Pogorelov on convex caps with prescribed curvature, and an unfoldability obstruction for almost flat convex caps due to Tarasov. Our example, which has 340 vertices, significantly simplifies an earlier construction by Tarasov, and confirms that Durer's conjecture does not hold for pseudo-edge unfoldings.

Euler characteristics of Brill-Noether varieties
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 374 (2021), 1513-1533 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an enumerative formula for the algebraic Euler characteristic of Brill-Noether varieties, parametrizing degree d and rank r linear series on a general genus g curve, with ramification profiles specified at up to two general points. Up to sign, this Euler characteristic is the number of standard set-valued tableaux of a certain skew shape with g labels. We use a flat degeneration via the Eisenbud-Harris theory of limit linear series, relying on moduli-theoretic advances of Osserman and Murray-Osserman; the count of set-valued tableaux is an explicit enumeration of strata of this degeneration.
