Joyal's theory of combiantorial species provides a rich and elegant framework for enumerating combinatorial structures by translating structural information into algebraic functional equations. We present some classical and folklore results which interpret the species-theoretic cycle index series in terms of the Pólya theory of the action of the symmetric group on the label set, allowing the enumeration of "partially-labeled" structures and providing an alternate foundation for several proofs. We also extend the theory to incorporate information about "structural" group actions (i.e. those which commute with the label permutation action) on combinatorial species, using the $Γ$-species of Henderson, and present Pólya-theoretic interpretations of the associated formal power series. We define the appropriate operations $+$, $\cdot$, $\circ$, and $\square$ on $Γ$-species, give formulas for the associated operations on $Γ$-cycle indices, and illustrate the use of this theory to study several important examples of combinatorial structures. Finally, we demonstrate the use of the Sage computer algebra system to enumerate $Γ$-species and their quotients.
Some Tauberian theory for the q-Lagrange inversion
We consider formal power series defined through the functional q-equation of the q-Lagrange inversion. Under some assumptions, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of these power series. As a by-product, we show that, via the 1/q-Borel transform, the q-Lagrange inversion formula provides an interpolation between the usual Lagrange inversion (q=1) and the probabilistic theory of renewal sequences (q tends to 0). We also discuss some new solutions of the q-Lagrange inversion equation which do not vanish at 0.
On q-algebraic equations and their power series solutions
We study the existence of formal power series solutions to q-algebraic equations. When a solution exists, we give a sufficient condition on the equation for this solution to have a positive radius of convergence. We emphasize on the case where the solution is divergent, giving a sharp estimate on the growth of the coefficients. As a consequence, we obtain a bound on the q-Gevrey order of the formal solution, which is optimal in some cases. Various examples illustrate our main results.
Deformations of shuffles and quasi-shuffles

We investigate deformations of the shuffl e Hopf algebra structure Sh(A) which can be de fined on the tensor algebra over a commutative algebra A. Such deformations, leading for example to the quasi-shuffl e algebra QSh(A), can be interpreted as natural transformations of the functor Sh, regarded as a functor from commutative nonunital algebras to coalgebras. We prove that the monoid of natural endomophisms of the functor Sh is isomorphic to the monoid of formal power series in one variable without constant term under composition, so that in particular, its natural automorphisms are in bijection with formal diffeomorphisms of the line. These transformations can be interpreted as elements of the Hopf algebra of word quasi-symmetric functions WQSym, and in turn de fine deformations of its structure. This leads to a new embedding of free quasi-symmetric functions into WQSym, whose relevance is illustrated by a simple and transparent proof of Goldberg's formula for the coe cients of the Hausdorff series.

We prove several power series identities involving the refined generating function of interval orders, as well as the refined generating function of the self-dual interval orders. These identities may be expressed as $\sum_{n\ge 0}(1/p;1/q)_n= \sum_{n\ge 0} pq^n(p;q)_n(q;q)_n$ and $\sum_{n\ge 0} (-1)^n(1/p;1/q)_n= \sum_{n\ge 0} pq^n(p;q)_n(-q;q)_n =\sum_{n\ge 0} (q/p)^n(p;q^2)_n$, where the equalities apply to the (purely formal) power series expansions of the above expressions at $p=q=1$, as well as at other suitable roots of unity.

Given an odd prime $p$, we provide formulas for the Hensel lifts of polynomial roots modulo $p$, and give an explicit factorization over the ring of formal power series with integer coefficients for certain reducible polynomials whose constant term is of the form $p^w$ with $w>1$. All of our formulas are given in terms of partial Bell polynomials and rely on the inversion formula of Lagrange.

The tail of a sequence $\{P_n(q)\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ of formal power series in $\mathbb{Z}[[q]]$ is the formal power series whose first $n$ coefficients agree up to a common sign with the first $n$ coefficients of $P_n$. This paper studies the tail of a sequence of admissible trivalent graphs with edges colored $n$ or $2n$. We use local skein relations to understand and compute the tail of these graphs. We also give product formulas for the tail of such trivalent graphs. Furthermore, we show that our skein theoretic techniques naturally lead to a proof for the Andrews-Gordon identities for the two variable Ramanujan theta function as well to corresponding identities for the false theta function.

Polynomial sequence ${P_m}_{m\geq0}$ is $q$-logarithmically concave if $P_{m}^2-P_{m+1}P_{m-1}$ is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients for any $m\geq{1}$. We introduce an analogue of this notion for formal power series whose coefficients are nonnegative continuous functions of parameter. Four types of such power series are considered where parameter dependence is expressed by a ratio of gamma functions. We prove six theorems stating various forms of $q$-logarithmic concavity and convexity of these series. The main motivating examples for these investigations are hypergeometric functions. In the last section of the paper we present new inequalities for the Kummer function, the ratio of the Gauss functions and the generalized hypergeometric function obtained as direct applications of the general theorems.
The combinatorics of the leading root of the partial theta function
Recently Alan Sokal studied the leading root $x_0(q)$ of the partial theta function $Θ_0(x,q)=\sum\limits_{n=0}^\infty x^nq^{\binom n2}$, considered as a formal power series. He proved that all the coefficients of $$-x_0(q)=1+q+2q^2+4q^3+9q^4+...$$ are positive integers. I give here an explicit combinatorial interpretation of these coefficients. More precisely, I show that $-x_0(q)$ enumerates rooted trees that are enriched by certain polyominoes, weighted according to their total area.

The aim of this paper is to describe the inversion of the sum $\sum_{n\geq 0}a^nb^n$ where $a$ and $b$ are non-commuting variables as a formal series in $a$ and $b$. We show that the inversion satisfies a non-commutative quadratic equation and that the number of certain monomials in its homogeneous components equals to a Catalan number. We also study general solutions of similar quadratic equations.

Let $F(X) = \sum_{n \geq 0} (-1)^{\varepsilon_n} X^{-λ_n}$ be a real lacunary formal power series, where $\varepsilon_n = 0, 1$ and $λ_{n+1}/λ_n > 2$. It is known that the denominators $Q_n(X)$ of the convergents of its continued fraction expansion are polynomials with coefficients $0, \pm 1$, and that the number of nonzero terms in $Q_n(X)$ is the $n$th term of the Stern-Brocot sequence. We show that replacing the index $n$ by any 2-adic integer $ω$ makes sense. We prove that $Q_ω(X)$ is a polynomial if and only if $ω\in {\mathbb Z}$. In all the other cases $Q_ω(X)$ is an infinite formal power series, the algebraic properties of which we discuss in the special case $λ_n = 2^{n+1} - 1$.
Computing with rational symmetric functions and applications to invariant theory and PI-algebras
Let the formal power series f in d variables with coefficients in an arbitrary field be a symmetric function decomposed as a series of Schur functions, and let f be a rational function whose denominator is a product of binomials of the form (1 - monomial). We use a classical combinatorial method of Elliott of 1903 further developed in the Partition Analysis of MacMahon in 1916 to compute the generating function of the multiplicities (i.e., the coefficients) of the Schur functions in the expression of f. It is a rational function with denominator of a similar form as f. We apply the method to several problems on symmetric algebras, as well as problems in classical invariant theory, algebras with polynomial identities, and noncommutative invariant theory.

Using a combinatorial description of the Bernstein operator and its action on Schur functions, we describe the formal power series solutions to a family of partial differential equations known as the 2-Toda hierarchy. We also characterize diagonal solutions and use this to prove that a special family of formal power series, called content-type series, are solutions to the 2-Toda hierarchy. As examples, we prove that various generating series for permutation factorization problems (including the double Hurwitz problem), correlators for the Schur measure on partitions and the formal character expansion of the HCIZ integral are all solutions to the 2-Toda hierarchy.

Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of integers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the coefficient sequence of the numerator polynomial $h_0(a^{<r >}) +...+ h_{λ'}(a^{<r >}) t^{λ'}$ of the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese series $a^{<r >}(t) = \sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n$. Under mild hypothesis we show that the vector of successive differences of this sequence up to the $\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor$\textsuperscript{th} entry is the $f$-vector of a simplicial complex for large $r$. In particular, the sequence satisfies the consequences of the unimodality part of the $g$-conjecture. We give applications of the main result to Hilbert series of Veronese algebras of standard graded algebras and the $f$-vectors of edgewise subdivisions of simplicial complexes.

I study the leading root x_0(y) of the partial theta function Θ_0(x,y) = \sum_{n=0}^\infty x^n y^{n(n-1)/2}, considered as a formal power series. I prove that all the coefficients of -x_0(y) are strictly positive. Indeed, I prove the stronger results that all the coefficients of -1/x_0(y) after the constant term 1 are strictly negative, and all the coefficients of 1/x_0(y)^2 after the constant term 1 are strictly negative except for the vanishing coefficient of y^3.
Rigidity of the topological dual of spaces of formal series with respect to product topologies

Even in spaces of formal power series is required a topology in order to legitimate some operations, in particular to compute infinite summations. Many topologies can be exploited for different purposes. Combinatorists and algebraists may think to usual order topologies, or the product topology induced by a discrete coefficient field, or some inverse limit topologies. Analysists will take into account the valued field structure of real or complex numbers. As the main result of this paper we prove that the topological dual spaces of formal power series, relative to the class of product topologies with respect to Hausdorff field topologies on the coefficient field, are all the same, namely the space of polynomials. As a consequence, this kind of rigidity forces linear maps, continuous for any (and then for all) of those topologies, to be defined by very particular infinite matrices similar to row-finite matrices.

Colored graphs, Gaussian integrals and stable graph polynomials
Asymptotic expansions of Gaussian integrals may often be interpreted as generating functions for certain combinatorial objects (graphs with additional data). In this article we discuss a general approach to all such cases using colored graphs. We prove that the generating power series for such graphs satisfy the same system of partial differential equations as the Gaussian integral and the formal power series solution of this system is unique. The solution is obtained as the genus expansion of the generating power series. The initial term of this expansion is the corresponding generating function for trees. The consequence equations for this term turns to be equivalent to the inversion problem for the gradient mapping defined by the initial condition. The equations for the higher terms of the genus expansion are linear. The solutions of these equations can be expressed explicitly by substitution of the initial conditions and the initial term (the tree expansion) into some universal polynomials (for g>1) which are generating functions for stable closed graphs. (For g=1 instead of polynomials appears logarithm.) The stable graph polynomials satisfy certain recurrence. In [1] some of these results were obtained for the one dimensional case by more or less direct solution of differential equations. Here we present purely combinatorial proofs.
The asymptotic expansion for the factorial and Lagrange inversion formula

We obtain an explicit simple formula for the coefficients of the asymptotic expansion for the factorial of a natural number,in terms of derivatives of powers of an elementary function. The unique explicit expression for the coefficients that appears to be known is that in the book by L. Comtet, which is given in terms of sums of associated Stirling numbers of the first kind. By considering the bivariate generating function of the associated Stirling numbers of the second kind, another expression for the coefficients in terms of them follows also from our analysis. Comparison with Comtet's expression yields combinatorial identities between associated Stirling numbers of first and second kind. It suggests by analogy another possible formula for the coefficients, in terms of a function involving the logarithm, that in fact proves to be true. The resulting coefficients, as well as the first ones are identified via the Lagrange inversion formula as the odd coefficients of the inverse of a pair of formal series, which permits us to obtain also some recurrences.
