We study the decompositions into irreducible components of tensor products and restrictions of irreducible representations of classical Lie groups as the rank of the group goes to infinity. We prove the Law of Large Numbers for the random counting measures describing the decomposition. This leads to two operations on measures which are deformations of the notions of the free convolution and the free projection. We further prove that if one replaces counting measures with others coming from the work of Perelomov and Popov on the higher order Casimir operators for classical groups, then the operations on the measures turn into the free convolution and projection themselves.
We also explain the relation between our results and limit shape theorems for uniformly random lozenge tilings with and without axial symmetry.
Almost Commutative Probability Theory
We solve two longstanding major problems in Free Probability. This is achieved by generalising the theory to one with values in arbitrary commutative algebras. We prove the existence of the multi-variable $S$-transform, and show that it is naturally realised as a faithful linear representation. Further, we prove that in dimension one, the analog of the classical relation between addition and multiplication of independent random variables holds for free random variables, if the co-domain is an algebra over the rationals. In this case the multiplicative problem can be reduced to the additive one, which is not true in dimensions greater than one. Finally, we classify the groups which arise as joint distributions of $n$-tuples of non-commutative random variables, endowed with the free convolution product, which is the binary operation that encodes the multiplication of free $n$-tuples.

We prove that if $p\geq 1$ and $-1\leq r\leq p-1$ then the binomial sequence $\binom{np+r}{n}$, $n=0,1,...$, is positive definite and is the moment sequence of a probability measure $ν(p,r)$, whose support is contained in $\left[0,p^p(p-1)^{1-p}\right]$. If $p>1$ is a rational number and $-1<r\leq p-1$ then $ν(p,r)$ is absolutely continuous and its density function $V_{p,r}$ can be expressed in terms of the Meijer $G$-function. In particular cases $V_{p,r}$ is an elementary function. We show that for $p>1$ the measures $ν(p,-1)$ and $ν(p,0)$ are certain free convolution powers of the Bernoulli distribution. Finally we prove that the binomial sequence $\binom{np+r}{n}$ is positive definite if and only if either $p\geq 1$, $-1\leq r\leq p-1$ or $p\leq 0$, $p-1\leq r \leq 0$. The measures corresponding to the latter case are reflections of the former ones.

We study the probability measure $μ_{0}$ for which the moment sequence is $\binom{3n}{n}\frac{1}{n+1}$. We prove that $μ_{0}$ is absolutely continuous, find the density function and prove that $μ_{0}$ is infinitely divisible with respect to the additive free convolution.

We define an extension of the polynomial calculus on a W*-probability space by introducing an abstract algebra which contains polynomials. This extension allows us to define transition operators for additive and multiplicative free convolution. It also permits us to characterize the free Segal-Bargmann transform and the free Hall transform introduced by Biane, in a manner which is closer to classical definitions. Finally, we use this extension of polynomial calculus to prove two asymptotic results on random matrices: the convergence for each fixed time, as N tends to infinity, of the *-distribution of the Brownian motion on the linear group GL_N(C) to the *-distribution of a free multiplicative circular Brownian motion, and the convergence of the classical Hall transform on U(N) to the free Hall transform.

We define higher order infinitesimal noncommutative probability space and infinitesimal non-crossing cumulant functionals. In this framework, we generalize to higher order the notion of infinitesimal freeness, via a vanishing of mixed cumulants condition. We also introduce and study some non-crossing partitions related to this notion. Finally, as an application, we show how to compute the successive derivatives of the free convolution of two time-indexed families of distributions from their individual derivatives.
The free Meixner class for pairs of measures
We investigate in more detail the two-state free convolution semigroups of pairs of measures whose Jacobi parameters are linear in the convolution parameter $t$. These semigroups were constructed in arXiv:1001.1540, where we also showed that measures with the analogous property for the usual and free convolution are exactly the classical, resp. free Meixner classes. The class of measures in this paper has not been considered explicitly before, but we show that it also has Meixner-type properties. Specifically, it appears in limit theorems, has a Laha-Lukacs-type characterization, and is related to the $q=0$ case of quadratic harnesses.

We provide an unifying polynomial expression giving moments in terms of cumulants, and viceversa, holding in the classical, boolean and free setting. This is done by using a symbolic treatment of Abel polynomials. As a by-product, we show that in the free cumulant theory the volume polynomial of Pitman and Stanley plays the role of the complete Bell exponential polynomial in the classical theory. Moreover via generalized Abel polynomials we construct a new class of cumulants, including the classical, boolean and free ones, and the convolutions linearized by them. Finally, via an umbral Fourier transform, we state a explicit connection between boolean and free convolution.

We show that a convolution semigroup of measures has Jacobi parameters polynomial in the convolution parameter $t$ if and only if the measures come from the Meixner class. Moreover, we prove the parallel result, in a more explicit way, for the free convolution and the free Meixner class. We then construct the class of measures satisfying the same property for the two-state free convolution. This class of two-state free convolution semigroups has not been considered explicitly before. We show that it also has Meixner-type properties. Specifically, it contains the analogs of the normal, Poisson, and binomial distributions, has a Laha-Lukacs-type characterization, and is related to the $q=0$ case of quadratic harnesses.

We prove that the classical normal distribution is infinitely divisible with respect to the free additive convolution. We study the Voiculescu transform first by giving a survey of its combinatorial implications and then analytically, including a proof of free infinite divisibility. In fact we prove that a subfamily Askey-Wimp-Kerov distributions are freely infinitely divisible, of which the normal distribution is a special case. At the time of this writing this is only the third example known to us of a nontrivial distribution that is infinitely divisible with respect to both classical and free convolution, the others being the Cauchy distribution and the free 1/2-stable distribution.

Using the combinatorics of non-crossing partitions, we construct a conditionally free analogue of the Voiculescu's S-transform. The result is applied to analytical description of conditionally free multiplicative convolution and characterization of infinite divisibility.

We study the limiting spectral measure of large symmetric random matrices of linear algebraic structure. For Hankel and Toeplitz matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_k\}$ of unit variance, and for symmetric Markov matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_{ij}\}_{j>i}$ of zero mean and unit variance, scaling the eigenvalues by $\sqrt{n}$ we prove the almost sure, weak convergence of the spectral measures to universal, nonrandom, symmetric distributions $γ_H$, $γ_M$ and $γ_T$ of unbounded support. The moments of $γ_H$ and $γ_T$ are the sum of volumes of solids related to Eulerian numbers, whereas $γ_M$ has a bounded smooth density given by the free convolution of the semicircle and normal densities. For symmetric Markov matrices generated by i.i.d. random variables $\{X_{ij}\}_{j>i}$ of mean $m$ and finite variance, scaling the eigenvalues by ${n}$ we prove the almost sure, weak convergence of the spectral measures to the atomic measure at $-m$. If $m=0$, and the fourth moment is finite, we prove that the spectral norm of $\mathbf {M}_n$ scaled by $\sqrt{2n\log n}$ converges almost surely to 1.

In this paper we investigate the properties of the free Sheffer systems, which are certain families of martingale polynomials with respect to the free Levy processes. First, we classify such families that consist of orthogonal polynomials; these are the free analogs of the Meixner systems. Next, we show that the fluctuations around free convolution semigroups have as principal directions the polynomials whose derivatives are martingale polynomials. Finally, we indicate how Rota's finite operator calculus can be modified for the free context.
