More on limited packings in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set $B$ of vertices in a graph $G$ is called a \emph{$k$-limited packing} if for each vertex $v$ of $G$, its closed neighbourhood has at most $k$ vertices in $B$. The \emph{$k$-limited packing number} of a graph $G$, denoted by $L_k(G)$, is the largest number of vertices in a $k$-limited packing in $G$. The concept of the $k$-limited packing of a graph was introduced by Gallant et al., which is a generalization of the well-known packing of a graph. In this paper, we present some tight bounds for the $k$-limited packing number of a graph in terms of its order, diameter, girth, and maximum degree, respectively. As a result, we obtain the tight Nordhaus-Gaddum-type result of this parameter for general $k$. At last, we investigate the relationship among the open packing number, the packing number and $2$-limited packing number of trees.

On the number of coloured triangulations of $d$-manifolds
Published in Discrete Comput Geom 65, 601-617 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We give superexponential lower and upper bounds on the number of coloured $d$-dimensional triangulations whose underlying space is an oriented manifold, when the number of simplices goes to infinity and $d\geq 3$ is fixed. In the special case of dimension $3$, the lower and upper bounds match up to exponential factors, and we show that there are $2^{O(n)} n^{\frac{n}{6}}$ coloured triangulations of $3$-manifolds with $n$ tetrahedra. Our results also imply that random coloured triangulations of $3$-manifolds have a sublinear number of vertices. Our upper bounds apply in particular to coloured $d$-spheres for which they seem to be the best known bounds in any dimension $d\geq 3$, even though it is often conjectured that exponential bounds hold in this case. We also ask a related question on regular edge-coloured graphs having the property that each $3$-coloured component is planar, which is of independent interest.

Schur reduction of trees and extremal entries of the Fiedler vector
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the eigenvectors of Laplacian matrices of trees. The Laplacian matrix is reduced to a tridiagonal matrix using the Schur complement. This preserves the eigenvectors and allows us to provide fomulas for the ratio of eigenvector entries. We also obtain bounds on the ratio of eigenvector entries along a path in terms of the eigenvalue and Perron values. The results are then applied to the Fiedler vector. Here we locate the extremal entries of the Fiedler vector and study classes of graphs such that the extremal entries can be found at the end points of the longest path.

On symmetries of edge and vertex colourings of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $c$ and $c'$ be edge or vertex colourings of a graph $G$. We say that $c'$ is less symmetric than $c$ if the stabiliser (in $\operatorname{Aut} G$) of $c'$ is contained in the stabiliser of $c$. We show that if $G$ is not a bicentred tree, then for every vertex colouring of $G$ there is a less symmetric edge colouring with the same number of colours. On the other hand, if $T$ is a tree, then for every edge colouring there is a less symmetric vertex colouring with the same number of edges. Our results can be used to characterise those graphs whose distinguishing index is larger than their distinguishing number.

A short derivation of the structure theorem for graphs with excluded topological minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
As a major step in their proof of Wagner's conjecture, Robertson and Seymour showed that every graph not containing a fixed graph $H$ as a minor has a tree-decomposition in which each torso is almost embeddable in a surface of bounded genus. Recently, Grohe and Marx proved a similar result for graphs not containing $H$ as a topological minor. They showed that every graph which does not contain $H$ as a topological minor has a tree-decomposition in which every torso is either almost embeddable in a surface of bounded genus, or has a bounded number of vertices of high degree. We give a short proof of the theorem of Grohe and Marx, improving their bounds on a number of the parameters involved.
Elusive extremal graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the uniqueness of optimal solutions to extremal graph theory problems. Lovasz conjectured that every finite feasible set of subgraph density constraints can be extended further by a finite set of density constraints so that the resulting set is satisfied by an asymptotically unique graph. This statement is often referred to as saying that `every extremal graph theory problem has a finitely forcible optimum'. We present a counterexample to the conjecture. Our techniques also extend to a more general setting involving other types of constraints.

The matching polynomials and spectral radii of uniform supertrees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study matching polynomials of uniform hypergraph and spectral radii of uniform supertrees. By comparing the matching polynomials of supertrees, we extend Li and Feng's results on grafting operations on graphs to supertrees. Using the methods of grafting operations on supertrees and comparing matching polynomials of supertrees, we determine the first $\lfloor\frac{d}{2}\rfloor+1$ largest spectral radii of $r$-uniform supertrees with size $m$ and diameter $d$. In addition, the first two smallest spectral radii of supertrees with size $m$ are determined.
Further Results On k-Super Graceful Graphs
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple, finite and undirected graph of order $p$ and size $q$. For $k\ge 1$, a bijection $f: V(G)\cup E(G) \to \{k, k+1, k+2, \ldots, k+p+q-1\}$ such that $f(uv)= |f(u) - f(v)|$ for every edge $uv\in E(G)$ is said to be a $k$-super graceful labeling of $G$. We say $G$ is $k$-super graceful if it admits a $k$-super graceful labeling. In this paper, we study the $k$-super gracefulness of some graphs in which each component is either regular or bi-regular.

On $k$-Super Graceful Labeling of Graphs
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple, finite and undirected graph of order $p$ and size $q$. For $k\ge 1$, a bijection $f: V(G)\cup E(G) \to \{k, k+1, k+2, \ldots, k+p+q-1\}$ such that $f(uv)= |f(u) - f(v)|$ for every edge $uv\in E(G)$ is said to be a $k$-super graceful labeling of $G$. We say $G$ is $k$-super graceful if it admits a $k$-super graceful labeling. In this paper, we study the $k$-super gracefulness of some standard graphs. Some general properties are obtained. Particularly, we found many sufficient conditions on $k$-super gracefulness for many families of (complete) bipartite and tripartite graphs. We show that some of the conditions are also necessary.

The excluded 3-minors for vf-safe delta-matroids
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
Vf-safe delta-matroids have the desirable property of behaving well under certain duality operations. Several important classes of delta-matroids are known to be vf-safe, including the class of ribbon-graphic delta-matroids, which is related to the class of ribbon graphs or embedded graphs in the same way that graphic matroids correspond to graphs. In this paper, we characterize vf-safe delta-matroids and ribbon-graphic delta-matroids by finding the minimal obstructions, called excluded 3-minors, to membership in the class. We find the unique (up to twisted duality) excluded $3$-minor within the class of set systems for the class of vf-safe delta-matroids. In the literature, binary delta-matroids appear in many different guises, with appropriate notions of minor operations equivalent to that of $3$-minors, perhaps most notably as graphs with vertex minors. We give a direct explanation of this equivalence and show that some well-known results may be expressed in terms of $3$-minors.

Exact solution to an extremal problem on graphic sequences with a realization containing every $2$-tree on $k$ vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
A simple graph $G$ is an {\it 2-tree} if $G=K_3$, or $G$ has a vertex $v$ of degree 2, whose neighbors are adjacent, and $G-v$ is an 2-tree. Clearly, if $G$ is an 2-tree on $n$ vertices, then $|E(G)|=2n-3$. A non-increasing sequence $π=(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ of nonnegative integers is a {\it graphic sequence} if it is realizable by a simple graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. Yin and Li (Acta Mathematica Sinica, English Series, 25(2009)795--802) proved that if $k\ge 2$, $n\ge \frac{9}{2}k^2+\frac{19}{2}k$ and $π=(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ is a graphic sequence with $\sum\limits_{i=1}^n d_i>(k-2)n$, then $π$ has a realization containing every 1-tree (the usual tree) on $k$ vertices. Moreover, the lower bound $(k-2)n$ is the best possible. This is a variation of a conjecture due to Erdős and Sós. In this paper, we investigate an analogue problem for $2$-trees and prove that if $k\ge 3$ is an integer with $k\equiv i(\mbox{mod }3)$, $n\geq20\lfloor\frac{k}{3}\rfloor^2+31\lfloor\frac{k}{3}\rfloor+12$ and $π=(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ is a graphic sequence with $\sum\limits_{i=1}^n d_i>\max\{(k-1)(n-1),2\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor n-2n-\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor^2+\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor+1-(-1)^i\}$, then $π$ has a realization containing every 2-tree on $k$ vertices. Moreover, the lower bound $\max\{(k-1)(n-1),2\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor n-2n-\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor^2+\lfloor\frac{2k}{3}\rfloor+1-(-1)^i\}$ is the best possible. This result implies a conjecture due to Zeng and Yin (Discrete Math. Theor. Comput. Sci., 17(3)(2016), 315--326).

Analogue of DP-coloring on variable degeneracy and its applications on list vertex-arboricity and DP-coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
In \cite{listnoC3adjC4}), Borodin and Ivanova proved that every planar graph without $4$-cycles adjacent to $3$-cycle is list vertex-$2$-aborable. In fact, they proved a more general result. Inspired by these results and DP-coloring which becomes a widely studied topic, we introduce a generalization on variable degeneracy including list vertex arboricity. We use this notion to extend a general result by Borodin and Ivanova. Not only that this theorem implies results about planar graphs without $4$-cycles adjacent to $3$-cycle by Borodin and Ivanova, it implies many other results including a result by Kim and Yu \cite{KimY} that every planar graph without $4$-cycles adjacent to $3$-cycle is DP-$4$-colorable.

Optimal Assignments with Supervisions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we provide a new graph theoretic proof of the tropical Jacobi identity, recently obtained in [AGN16]. We also develop an application of this theorem to optimal assignments with supervisions. That is, optimally assigning multiple tasks to one team, or daily tasks to multiple teams, where each team has a supervisor task or a supervised task.
Edge metric dimension of some generalized Petersen graphs
Published in J. Results Math (2019) 74: 182 • View Publication • BIB
The edge metric dimension problem was recently introduced, which initiated the study of its mathematical properties. The theoretical properties of the edge metric representations and the edge metric dimension of generalized Petersen graphs $GP(n,k)$ are studied in this paper. We prove the exact formulae for $GP(n,1)$ and $GP(n, 2)$, while for the other values of $k$ the lower bound is stated.

More on Equienergetic Threshold Graphs
The energy of a graph is defined as the sum the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. A threshold graph G on n vertices is coded by a binary sequence of length n. In this paper we answer a question posed by Jacobs et al. [Eigenvalues and energy in threshold graphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 465 (2015) 412-425], by giving an infinite sequences of threshold graphs having the same energy but differ to the complete graph's energy.

Finite big Ramsey degrees in universal structures
Big Ramsey degrees of finite structures are usually considered with respect to a Fraï ssé limit. Building mainly on the work of Devlin, Sauer, Laflamme and Van Thé, in this paper we consider structures which are not Fraï ssé limits, and still have the property that their finite substructures have finite big Ramsey degrees in them. For example, the class of all finite acyclic oriented graphs is not a Fraï ssé class, and yet we show that there is a countably infinite acyclic oriented graph in which every finite acyclic oriented graph has finite big Ramsey degree. Our main tools come from category theory as it has recently become evident that the Ramsey property is not only a deep combinatorial property, but also a genuine categorical property.
Effective divisor classes on metric graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of semibreak divisors on metric graphs (tropical curves) and prove that every effective divisor class (of degree at most the genus) has a semibreak divisor representative. This appropriately generalizes the notion of break divisors (in degree equal to genus). Our method of proof is new, even for the special case of break divisors. We provide an algorithm to efficiently compute such semibreak representatives. Semibreak divisors provide the tool to establish some basic properties of effective loci inside Picard groups of metric graphs. We prove that effective loci are pure-dimensional polyhedral sets. We also prove that a `generic' divisor class (in degree at most the genus) has rank zero, and that the Abel-Jacobi map is `birational' onto its image. These are analogues of classical results for Riemann surfaces.
A complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of their Cayley graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we find a complete characterization of plateaued Boolean functions in terms of the associated Cayley graphs. Precisely, we show that a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is a complete bipartite graph between the support of $f$ and its complement (hence the graph is strongly regular of parameters $e=0,d=2^{(n+s-2)/2}$). Moreover, a Boolean function $f$ is $s$-plateaued (of weight $\neq 2^{(n+s-2)/2}$) if and only if the associated Cayley graph is strongly $3$-walk-regular (and also strongly $\ell$-walk-regular, for all odd $\ell\geq 3$) with some explicitly given parameters.

Finding a Path with Two Labels Forbidden in Group-Labeled Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The parity of the length of paths and cycles is a classical and well-studied topic in graph theory and theoretical computer science. The parity constraints can be extended to label constraints in a group-labeled graph, which is a directed graph with each arc labeled by an element of a group. Recently, paths and cycles in group-labeled graphs have been investigated, such as packing non-zero paths and cycles, where "non-zero" means that the identity element is a unique forbidden label. In this paper, we present a solution to finding an $s$--$t$ path with two labels forbidden in a group-labeled graph. This also leads to an elementary solution to finding a zero $s$--$t$ path in a ${\mathbb Z}_3$-labeled graph, which is the first nontrivial case of finding a zero path. This situation in fact generalizes the 2-disjoint paths problem in undirected graphs, which also motivates us to consider that setting. More precisely, we provide a polynomial-time algorithm for testing whether there are at most two possible labels of $s$--$t$ paths in a group-labeled graph or not, and finding $s$--$t$ paths attaining at least three distinct labels if exist. The algorithm is based on a necessary and sufficient condition for a group-labeled graph to have exactly two possible labels of $s$--$t$ paths, which is the main technical contribution of this paper.

The asymptotic spectrum of graphs and the Shannon capacity
Published in J. Combinatorica (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the asymptotic spectrum of graphs and apply the theory of asymptotic spectra of Strassen (J. Reine Angew. Math. 1988) to obtain a new dual characterisation of the Shannon capacity of graphs. Elements in the asymptotic spectrum of graphs include the Lovász theta number, the fractional clique cover number, the complement of the fractional orthogonal rank and the fractional Haemers bounds.
