Some Criteria for a Signed Graph to Have Full Rank
Published • View Publication • BIB
A weighted graph $G^ω$ consists of a simple graph $G$ with a weight $ω$, which is a mapping,$ω$: $E(G)\rightarrow\mathbb{Z}\backslash\{0\}$. A signed graph is a graph whose edges are labeled with $-1$ or $1$. In this paper, we characterize graphs which have a sign such that their signed adjacency matrix has full rank, and graphs which have a weight such that their weighted adjacency matrix does not have full rank. We show that for any arbitrary simple graph $G$, there is a sign $σ$ so that $G^σ$ has full rank if and only if $G$ has a $\{1,2\}$-factor. We also show that for a graph $G$, there is a weight $ω$ so that $G^ω$ does not have full rank if and only if $G$ has at least two $\{1,2\}$-factors.

Graphs with girth at least 5 with orders between 20 and 32
We prove properties of extremal graphs of girth 5 and order 20 <=v <= 32. In each case we identify the possible minimum and maximum degrees, and in some cases prove the existence of (non-trivial) embedded stars. These proofs allow for tractable search for and identification of all non isomorphic cases.
The Graph of Critical Pairs of a Crown
Published • View Publication • BIB
There is a natural way to associate with a poset $P$ a hypergraph $H$, called the hypergraph of critical pairs, so that the dimension of $P$ is exactly equal to the chromatic number of $H$. The edges of $H$ have variable sizes, but it is of interest to consider the graph $G$ formed by the edges of $H$ that have size~2. The chromatic number of $G$ is less than or equal to the dimension of $P$ and the difference between the two values can be arbitrarily large. Nevertheless, there are important instances where the two parameters are the same, and we study one of these in this paper. Our focus is on a family $\{S_n^k:n\ge 3, k\ge 0\}$ of height two posets called crowns. We show that the chromatic number of the graph $G_n^k$ of critical pairs of the crown $S_n^k$ is the same as the dimension of $S_n^k$, which is known to be $\lceil 2(n+k)/(k+2)\rceil$. In fact, this theorem follows as an immediate corollary to the stronger result: The independence number of $G_n^k$ is $(k+1)(k+2)/2$. We obtain this theorem as part of a comprehensive analysis of independent sets in $G_n^k$ including the determination of the second largest size among the maximal independent sets, both the reversible and non-reversible types.

Simple polytopes without small separators, II: Thurston's bound
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that there are simple 4-dimensional polytopes with n vertices such that all separators of the graph have size at least $Ω(n/\log n)$. This establishes a strong form of a claim by Thurston, for which the construction and proof had been lost. We construct the polytopes by cutting off the vertices and then the edges of a particular type of neighborly cubical polytopes. The graphs of simple polytopes thus obtained are 4-regular; they contain 3-regular "cube-connected cycle graphs" as minors of spanning subgraphs.

On $Q$-deformations of Postnikov-Shapiro algebras
For any given loopless graph $G$, we introduce $Q$ - deformations of its Postnikov-Shapiro algebras counting spanning trees, counting spanning forests and $Q$ - deformations of internal algebra of $G$. We determine the total dimension of the algebras; our proof also gives a new proof of the formula for the total dimensions of the usual Postnikov-Shapiro algebras. Furthermore, we construct "square-free" definition of usual internal algebra of $G$.

An improved upper bound on the maximum degree of terminal-pairable complete graphs
A graph $G$ is terminal-pairable with respect to a demand multigraph $D$ on the same vertex set as $G$, if there exists edge-disjoint paths joining the end vertices of every demand edge of $D$. In this short note, we improve the upper bound on the largest $Δ(n)$ with the property that the complete graph on $n$ vertices is terminal-pairable with respect to any demand multigraph of maximum degree at most $Δ(n)$. This disproves a conjecture originally stated by Csaba, Faudree, Gyárfás, Lehel and Schelp.

Generalized chordality, vertex separators and hyperbolicity on graphs
Let $G$ be a graph with the usual shortest-path metric. A graph is $δ$-hyperbolic if for every geodesic triangle $T$, any side of $T$ is contained in a $δ$-neighborhood of the union of the other two sides. A graph is chordal if every induced cycle has at most three edges. A vertex separator set in a graph is a set of vertices that disconnects two vertices. In this paper we study the relation between vertex separator sets, some chordality properties which are natural generalizations of being chordal and the hyperbolicity of the graph. We also give a characterization of being quasi-isometric to a tree in terms of chordality and prove that this condition also characterizes being hyperbolic, when restricted to triangles, and having stable geodesics, when restricted to bigons.

The Peterson recurrence formula for the chromatic discriminant of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The absolute value of the coefficient of $q$ in the chromatic polynomial of a graph $G$ is known as the chromatic discriminant of $G$ and is denoted $α(G)$. There is a well known recurrence formula for $α(G)$ that comes from the deletion-contraction rule for the chromatic polynomial. In this paper we prove another recurrence formula for $α(G)$ that comes from the theory of Kac-Moody Lie algebras. We start with a brief survey on many interesting algebraic and combinatorial interpretations of $α(G)$. We use two of these interpretations (in terms of acyclic orientations and spanning trees) to give two bijective proofs for our recurrence formula of $α(G)$.
On Minimum Bisection and Related Cut Problems in Trees and Tree-Like Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Minimum Bisection denotes the NP-hard problem to partition the vertex set of a graph into two sets of equal sizes while minimizing the width of the bisection, which is defined as the number of edges between these two sets. We first consider this problem for trees and prove that the minimum bisection width of every tree $T$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $MinBis(T) \leq 8 n Δ(T) / diam(T)$. Second, we generalize this to arbitrary graphs with a given tree decomposition $(T,X)$ and give an upper bound on the minimum bisection width that depends on the structure of $(T,X)$. Moreover, we show that a bisection satisfying our general bound can be computed in time proportional to the encoding length of the tree decomposition when the latter is provided as input.
Approximating the Minimum $k$-Section Width in Bounded-Degree Trees with Linear Diameter
Minimum $k$-Section denotes the NP-hard problem to partition the vertex set of a graph into $k$ sets of sizes as equal as possible while minimizing the cut width, which is the number of edges between these sets. When $k$ is an input parameter and $n$ denotes the number of vertices, it is NP-hard to approximate the width of a minimum $k$-section within a factor of $n^c$ for any $c<1$, even when restricted to trees with constant diameter. Here, we show that every tree $T$ allows a $k$-section of width at most $(k-1) (2 + 16n / diam(T) ) Δ(T)$. This implies a polynomial-time constant-factor approximation for the Minimum $k$-Section Problem when restricted to trees with linear diameter and constant maximum degree. Moreover, we extend our results from trees to arbitrary graphs with a given tree decomposition.

Binary functions, degeneracy, and alternating dimaps
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper continues the study of combinatorial properties of binary functions --- that is, functions $f:2^E\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$ such that $f(\emptyset)=1$, where $E$ is a finite set. Binary functions have previously been shown to admit families of transforms that generalise duality, including a trinity transform, and families of associated minor operations that generalise deletion and contraction, with both these families parameterised by the complex numbers. Binary function representations exist for graphs (via the indicator functions of their cutset spaces) and indeed arbitrary matroids (as shown by the author previously). In this paper, we characterise degenerate elements --- analogues of loops and coloops --- in binary functions, with respect to any pair of minor operations from our complex-parameterised family. We then apply this to study the relationship between binary functions and Tutte's alternating dimaps, which also support a trinity transform and three associated minor operations. It is shown that only the simplest alternating dimaps have binary representations of the form we consider, which seems to be the most direct type of representation. The question of whether there exist other, more sophisticated types of binary function representations for alternating dimaps is left open.

Pentavalent symmetric graphs admitting transitive non-abelian characteristically simple groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ be a graph and let $G$ be a group of automorphisms of $Γ$. The graph $Γ$ is called $G$-normal if $G$ is normal in the automorphism group of $Γ$. Let $T$ be a finite non-abelian simple group and let $G = T^l$ with $l\geq 1$. In this paper we prove that if every connected pentavalent symmetric $T$-vertex-transitive graph is $T$-normal, then every connected pentavalent symmetric $G$-vertex-transitive graph is $G$-normal. This result, among others, implies that every connected pentavalent symmetric $G$-vertex-transitive graph is $G$-normal except $T$ is one of $57$ simple groups. Furthermore, every connected pentavalent symmetric $G$-regular graph is $G$-normal except $T$ is one of $20$ simple groups, and every connected pentavalent $G$-symmetric graph is $G$-normal except $T$ is one of $17$ simple groups.

Serre's Properties for Quadratic Generated Domains from Graphs
For any graph, one can construct a ring, called the edge ring, which is a quadratic-monomial generated subring of the Laurent polynomial ring $k[x_1^{\pm 1},\dots,x_n^{\pm 1}]$. In fact, every quadratic-monomial generated subring of this Laurent polynomial ring can be generated as an edge ring for some graph. The combinatorial structure of the graph has been successfully applied to identify and classify many important commutative algebraic properties of the corresponding edge ring. In this paper, we classify Serre's $R_1$ condition for all quadratic-monomial generated subrings of $k[x_1^{\pm 1},\dots,x_n^{\pm 1}]$. Moreover, we provide a minimal example of a graph whose corresponding edge ring is not Cohen-Macaulay. This paper extends the work of Hibi and Ohsugi from the setting subrings of polynomial rings to subrings of Laurent polynomial rings.

The distinguishing number and the distinguishing index of line and graphoidal graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The distinguishing number (index) $D(G)$ ($D'(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has an vertex labeling (edge labeling) with $d$ labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. A graphoidal cover of $G$ is a collection $ψ$ of (not necessarily open) paths in $G$ such that every path in $ψ$ has at least two vertices, every vertex of $G$ is an internal vertex of at most one path in $ψ$ and every edge of $G$ is in exactly one path in $ψ$. Let $Ω(G,ψ)$ denote the intersection graph of $ψ$. A graph $H$ is called a graphoidal graph, if there exists a graph $G$ and a graphoidal cover $ψ$ of $G$ such that $H\cong Ω(G, ψ)$. In this paper, we study the distinguishing number and the distinguishing index of the line graph and the graphoidal graph of a simple connected graph $G$.

Spanning Simplicial Complexes of Uni-Cyclic Multigraphs
A multigraph is a nonsimple graph which is permitted to have multiple edges, that is, edges that have the same end nodes. We introduce the concept of spanning simplicial complexes $Δ_s(\mathcal{G})$ of multigraphs $\mathcal{G}$, which provides a generalization of spanning simplicial complexes of associated simple graphs. We give first the characterization of all spanning trees of a uni-cyclic multigraph $\mathcal{U}_{n,m}^r$ with $n$ edges including $r$ multiple edges within and outside the cycle of length $m$. Then, we determine the facet ideal $I_\mathcal{F}(Δ_s(\mathcal{U}_{n,m}^r))$ of spanning simplicial complex $Δ_s(\mathcal{U}_{n,m}^r)$ and its primary decomposition. The Euler characteristic is a well-known topological and homotopic invariant to classify surfaces. Finally, we device a formula for Euler characteristic of spanning simplicial complex $Δ_s(\mathcal{U}_{n,m}^r)$.

Group twin coloring of graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 20 no. 1, Graph Theory (June 26, 2018) dmtcs:3948 • View Publication • BIB
For a given graph $G$, the least integer $k\geq 2$ such that for every Abelian group $\mathcal{G}$ of order $k$ there exists a proper edge labeling $f:E(G)\rightarrow \mathcal{G}$ so that $\sum_{x\in N(u)}f(xu)\neq \sum_{x\in N(v)}f(xv)$ for each edge $uv\in E(G)$ is called the \textit{group twin chromatic index} of $G$ and denoted by $χ'_g(G)$. This graph invariant is related to a few well-known problems in the field of neighbor distinguishing graph colorings. We conjecture that $χ'_g(G)\leq Δ(G)+3$ for all graphs without isolated edges, where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$, and provide an infinite family of connected graph (trees) for which the equality holds. We prove that this conjecture is valid for all trees, and then apply this result as the base case for proving a general upper bound for all graphs $G$ without isolated edges: $χ'_g(G)\leq 2(Δ(G)+{\rm col}(G))-5$, where ${\rm col}(G)$ denotes the coloring number of $G$. This improves the best known upper bound known previously only for the case of cyclic groups $\mathbb{Z}_k$.

A Characterization of $(4,2)$-Choosable Graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory. Vol. 92(4), December 2019, pp. 460-487 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is \emph{$(a,b)$-choosable} if given any list assignment $L$ with $|L(v)|=a$ for each $v\in V(G)$ there exists a function $\varphi$ such that $\varphi(v)\in L(v)$ and $|\varphi(v)|=b$ for all $v\in V(G)$, and whenever vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent $\varphi(x)\cap \varphi(y)=\emptyset$. Meng, Puleo, and Zhu conjectured a characterization of (4,2)-choosable graphs. We prove their conjecture.

Multi-Symbol Forbidden Configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $r$-matrix is a matrix with symbols in $\{0,1,\dots,r-1\}$. A matrix is simple if it has no repeated columns. Let the support of a matrix $F$, $\text{supp}(F)$ be the largest simple matrix such that every column in $\text{supp}(F)$ is in $F$. For a family of $r$-matrices $\mathcal{F}$, we define $\text{forb}(m,r,\mathcal{F})$ as the maximum number of columns of an $m$-rowed, $r$-matrix $A$ such that $F$ is not a row-column permutation of $A$ for all $F \in \mathcal{F}$. While many results exist for $r=2$, there are fewer for larger numbers of symbols. We expand on the field of forbidding matrices with $r$-symbols, introducing a new construction for lower bounds of the growth of $\text{forb}(m,r,\mathcal{F})$ (with respect to $m$) that is applicable to matrices that are either not simple or have a constant row. We also introduce a new upper bound restriction that helps with avoiding non-simple matrices, limited either by the asymptotic bounds of the support, or the size of the forbidden matrix, whichever is larger. Continuing the trend of upper bounds, we represent a well-known technique of standard induction as a graph, and use graph theory methods to obtain asymptotic upper bounds. With these techniques we solve multiple, previously unknown, asymptotic bounds for a variety of matrices. Finally, we end with block matrices, or matrices with only constant row, and give bounds for all possible cases.
Chip-firing groups of iterated cones
