Tilings in randomly perturbed dense graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A perfect $H$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of a graph $H$ in $G$ that together cover all the vertices in $G$. In this paper we investigate perfect $H$-tilings in a random graph model introduced by Bohman, Frieze and Martin in which one starts with a dense graph and then adds $m$ random edges to it. Specifically, for any fixed graph $H$, we determine the number of random edges required to add to an arbitrary graph of linear minimum degree in order to ensure the resulting graph contains a perfect $H$-tiling with high probability. Our proof utilises Szemerédi's Regularity lemma as well as a special case of a result of Komlós concerning almost perfect $H$-tilings in dense graphs.

Counting equilibria of the Kuramoto model using birationally invariant intersection index
Published • View Publication • BIB
Synchronization in networks of interconnected oscillators is a fascinating phenomenon that appear naturally in many independent fields of science and engineering. A substantial amount of work has been devoted to understanding all possible synchronization configurations on a given network. In this setting, a key problem is to determine the total number of such configurations. Through an algebraic formulation, for tree and cycle graphs, we provide an upper bound on this number using the birationally invariant intersection index of a system of rational functions on a toric variety.

Some Topological Invariants of Generalized Möbius Ladder
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Hosoya polynomial of a graph $G$ was introduced by H. Hosoya in 1988 as a counting polynomial, which actually counts the number of distances of paths of different lengths in $G$. The most interesting application of the Hosoya polynomial is that almost all distance-based graph invariants, which are used to predict physical, chemical and pharmacological properties of organic molecules, can be recovered from it. In this article we give the general closed form of the Hosoya polynomial of the generalized Möbius ladder $M(m,n)$ for arbitrary $m$ and for $n=3$. Moreover, we recover Wiener, hyper Wiener, Tratch-Stankevitch-Zefirov, and Harary indices from it.
Some heterochromatic theorems for matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
The anti-Ramsey number of Erdös, Simonovits and Sós from 1973 has become a classic invariant in Graph Theory. To study this invariant in Matroid Theory, we use a related invariant introduce by Arocha, Bracho and Neumann-Lara. The heterochromatic number $hc(H)$ of a non-empty hypergraph $H$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that for every colouring of the vertices of $H$ with exactly $k$ colours, there is a totally multicoloured hyperedge of $H$. Given a rank-$r$ matroid $M$, there are several hypergraphs associated to the matroid that we can consider. One is $C(M) $, the hypergraph where the points are the elements of the matroid and the hyperedges are the circuits of $M$. The other one is $B(M)$, where here the points are the elements and the hyperedges are the bases of the matroid. We prove that $hc(C(M))$ equals $r+1$ when $M$ is not the free matroid $U_{n,n}$, and that if $M$ is a paving matroid, then $hc(B(M))$ equals $r$. Then we explore the case when the hypergraph has the Hamiltonian circuits of the matroid as hyperedges, if any, for a class of paving matroids. We also extend the trivial observation of Erdös, Simonovits and Sós for the anti-Ramsey number for 3-cycles to 3-circuits in projective geometries over finite fields.

Vertex-disjoint properly edge-colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is conjectured that every edge-colored complete graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfying $Δ^{mon}(G)\leq n-3k+1$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint properly edge-colored cycles. We confirm this conjecture for $k=2$, prove several additional weaker results for general $k$, and we establish structural properties of possible minimum counterexamples to the conjecture. We also reveal a close relationship between properly edge-colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs and directed cycles in multi-partite tournaments. Using this relationship and our results on edge-colored complete graphs, we obtain several partial solutions to a conjecture on disjoint cycles in directed graphs due to Bermond and Thomassen.

The Tutte Polynomial of Symmetric Hyperplane Arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Tutte polynomial is originally a bivariate polynomial which enumerates the colorings of a graph and of its dual graph. Ardila extended in 2007 the definition of the Tutte polynomial on the real hyperplane arrangements. He particularly computed the Tutte polynomials of the hyperplane arrangements associated to the classical Weyl groups. Those associated to the exceptional Weyl groups were computed by De Concini and Procesi one year later. This article has two objectives: On one side, we extend the Tutte polynomial computing to the complex hyperplane arrangements. On the other side, we introduce a wider class of hyperplane arrangements which is that of the symmetric hyperplane arrangements. Computing the Tutte polynomial of a symmetric hyperplane arrangement permits us to deduce the Tutte polynomials of some hyperplane arrangements, particularly of those associated to the imprimitive reflection groups.

Extremal solutions to some art gallery and terminal-pairability problems
The chosen tool of this thesis is an extremal type approach. The lesson drawn by the theorems proved in the thesis is that surprisingly small compromise is necessary on the efficacy of the solutions to make the approach work. The problems studied have several connections to other subjects and practical applications. The first part of the thesis is concerned with orthogonal art galleries. A sharp extremal bound is proved on partitioning orthogonal polygons into at most 8-vertex polygons using established techniques in the field of art gallery problems. This fills in the gap between already known results for partitioning into at most 6- and 10-vertex orthogonal polygons. Next, these techniques are further developed to prove a new type of extremal art gallery result. The novelty provided by this approach is that it establishes a connection between mobile and stationary guards. This theorem has strong computational consequences, in fact, it provides the basis for an $\frac83$-approximation algorithm for guarding orthogonal polygons with rectangular vision. In the second part, the graph theoretical concept of terminal-pairability is studied in complete and complete grid graphs. Once again, the extremal approach is conductive to discovering efficient methods to solve the problem. In the case of a complete base graph, the new demonstrated lower bound on the maximum degree of realizable demand graphs is 4 times higher than previous best results. The techniques developed are then used to solve the classical extremal edge number problem for the terminal-pairability problem in complete base graphs. The complete grid base graph lies on the other end of the spectrum in terms density amongst path-pairable graphs. It is shown that complete grid graphs are relatively efficient in routing edge-disjoint paths.
Embedding Half-Edge Graphs in Punctured Surfaces
It is known that graphs cellularly embedded into surfaces are equivalent to ribbon graphs. In this work, we generalize this statement to broader classes of graphs and surfaces. Half-edge graphs extend abstract graphs and are useful in quantum field theory in physics. On the other hand, ribbon graphs with half-edges generalize ribbon graphs and appear in a different type of field theory emanating from matrix models. We then give a sense of embeddings of half-edge graphs in punctured surfaces and determine (minimal/maximal) conditions for an equivalence between these embeddings and half-edge ribbon graphs. Given some assumptions on the embedding, the geometric dual of a cellularly embedded half-edge graph is also identified.
Beyond Outerplanarity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study straight-line drawings of graphs where the vertices are placed in convex position in the plane, i.e., \emph{convex drawings}. We consider two families of graph classes with convex drawings: \emph{outer $k$-planar} graphs, where each edge is crossed by at most $k$ other edges; and, \emph{outer $k$-quasi-planar} graphs where no $k$ edges can mutually cross. We show that the outer $k$-planar graphs are $\lfloor3.5\sqrt{k}\rfloor$-degenerate, and consequently that every outer $k$-planar graph can be colored with $\lfloor3.5\sqrt{k}\rfloor + 1$ colors. We further show that every outer $k$-planar graph has a balanced vertex separator of size at most $2k+3$. For each fixed $k$, these small balanced separators allow us to test outer $k$-planarity in quasi-polynomial time, e.g., this implies that none of these recognition problems is NP-hard unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis fails. We also show that the class of outer $k$-quasi-planar graphs and the class of planar graphs are incomparable. Finally, we restrict outer $k$-planar and outer $k$-quasi-planar drawings to \emph{full} drawings (where no crossing appears on the boundary of the outer face) and to \emph{closed} drawings (where the vertex sequence on the boundary of the outer face is a Hamiltonian cycle in the graph). For each $k$, we express \emph{closed outer $k$-planarity} and \emph{closed outer $k$-quasi-planarity} in \emph{extended monadic second-order logic}. Due to a result of Wood and Telle (New York J. Math., 2007) every outer $k$-planar graph has treewidth at most $3k+11$. Thus, Courcelle's theorem implies that closed outer $k$-planarity is linear time testable. We leverage this result to further show that full outer $k$-planarity can also be tested in linear time.

On Existentially Complete Triangle-free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a positive integer $k$, we say that a graph is $k$-existentially complete if for every $0 \leq a \leq k$, and every tuple of distinct vertices $x_1,\ldots,x_a$, $y_1,\ldots,y_{k-a}$, there exists a vertex $z$ that is joined to all of the vertices $x_1,\ldots,x_a$ and none of the vertices $y_1,\ldots,y_{k-a}$. While it is easy to show that the binomial random graph $G_{n,1/2}$ satisfies this property with high probability for $k \sim c\log n$, little is known about the "triangle-free" version of this problem; does there exist a finite triangle-free graph $G$ with a similar "extension property". This question was first raised by Cherlin in 1993 and remains open even in the case $k=4$. We show that there are no $k$-existentially complete triangle-free graphs with $k >\frac{8\log n}{\log\log n}$, thus giving the first non-trivial, non-existence result on this "old chestnut" of Cherlin. We believe that this result breaks through a natural barrier in our understanding of the problem.

On $m$-Closed Graphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 21, Issue 4 (2014) • Search Publication
A graph is closed when its vertices have a labeling by $[n]$ such that the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ has a quadratic Gröbner basis with respect to the lexicographic order induced by $x_1 > \cdots > x_n > y_1> \cdots > y_n$. In this paper, we generalize this notion and study the so called $m-$closed graphs. We find equivalent condition to $3-$closed property of an arbitrary tree $T$. Using it, we classify a class of $3-$closed trees. The primary decomposition of this class of graphs is also studied.

Circumference of 3-connected cubic graphs
Published in J. Comb. Theory B, 128 (2018) 134-159 • View Publication • BIB
The circumference of a graph is the length of its longest cycles. Jackson established a conjecture of Bondy by showing that the circumference of a 3-connected cubic graph of order $n$ is $Ω(n^{0.694})$. Bilinski {\it et al.} improved this lower bound to $Ω(n^{0.753})$ by studying large Eulerian subgraphs in 3-edge-connected graphs. In this paper, we further improve this lower bound to $Ω(n^{0.8})$. This is done by considering certain 2-connected cubic graphs, finding cycles through two given edges, and distinguishing the cases whether or not these edges are adjacent.
Hamiltonicity of edge-chromatic critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$, denote by $Δ$ and $χ^\prime$ the maximum degree and the chromatic index of $G$, respectively. A simple graph $G$ is called {\it edge-$Δ$-critical} if $χ^\prime(G)=Δ+1$ and $χ^\prime(H)\leΔ$ for every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$. We proved that every edge chromatic critical graph of order $n$ with maximum degree at least $\frac{2n}{3}+12$ is Hamiltonian.

On the zeroth-order general Randić index, variable sum exdeg index and trees having vertices with prescribed degree
Published in Discrete Math. Algorithm. Appl. 10 (2018) Art# 1850015 • View Publication • BIB
The zeroth-order general Randić index (usually denoted by $R_α^{0}$) and variable sum exdeg index (denoted by $SEI_{a}$) of a graph $G$ are defined as $R_α^{0}(G)= \sum_{v\in V(G)} (d_{v})^α$ and $SEI_{a}(G)= \sum_{v\in V(G)}d_{v}a^{d_{v}}$ where $d_{v}$ is degree of the vertex $v\in V(G)$, $a$ is a positive real number different from 1 and $α$ is a real number other than $0$ and $1$. A segment of a tree is a path $P$, whose terminal vertices are branching or pendent, and all non-terminal vertices (if exist) of $P$ have degree 2. For $n\ge6$, let $\mathbb{PT}_{n,n_1}$, $\mathbb{ST}_{n,k}$, $\mathbb{BT}_{n,b}$ be the collections of all $n$-vertex trees having $n_1$ pendent vertices, $k$ segments, $b$ branching vertices, respectively. In this paper, all the trees with extremum (maximum and minimum) zeroth-order general Randić index and variable sum exdeg index are determined from the collections $\mathbb{PT}_{n,n_1}$, $\mathbb{ST}_{n,k}$, $\mathbb{BT}_{n,b}$. The obtained extremal trees for the collection $\mathbb{ST}_{n,k}$ are also extremal trees for the collection of all $n$-vertex trees having fixed number of vertices with degree 2 (because it is already known that the number of segments of a tree $T$ can be determined from the number of vertices of $T$ with degree 2 and vise versa).

ZFC independence and subset sum
We study recursively defined functions associated with directed graphs on the k dimensional nonnegative integral lattice. The existence of certain combinatorial structures associated with these function classes are shown to be independent of the ZFC axioms of mathematics. These structures, in a natural way, give rise to sets of instances to the subset sum problem. We use this connection to make some observations about ZFC independence and the subset sum problem.

The $M$-Polynomial and Topological Indices of Generalized Möbius Ladder and Its Line Graph
The $M$-polynomial was introduced by Deutsch and Klavžar in 2015 as a graph polynomial to provide an easy way to find closed formulas of degree-based topological indices, which are used to predict physical, chemical, and pharmacological properties of organic molecules. In this paper we give general closed forms of the $M$-polynomial of the generalized Möbius ladder and its line graph. We also compute Zagreb Indices, generalized Randić indices, and symmetric division index of these graphs via the $M$-polynomial.

Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem for the group $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider the derangement graph for the group $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ where $q$ is a prime power. We calculate all eigenvalues for this derangement graph and use these eigenvalues to prove that $\textrm{PSU}(3,q)$ has the Erdős-Ko-Rado property and, provided that $q\neq 2, 5$, another property that we call the {\textsl Erdős-Ko-Rado module property}.

The extremal function for bipartite linklessly embeddable graphs
Published in Combinatorica. 39 (2019), 1081-1104 • View Publication • BIB
An embedding of a graph in $3$-space is linkless if for every two disjoint cycles there exists an embedded ball that contains one of the cycles and is disjoint from the other. We prove that every bipartite linklessly embeddable (simple) graph on $n\ge5$ vertices has at most $3n-10$ edges, unless it is isomorphic to the complete bipartite graph $K_{3,n-3}$.
Peaks on Graphs
Given a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and a bijective labeling of the vertices using the integers $1,2,\ldots, n$, we say $G$ has a peak at vertex $v$ if the degree of $v$ is greater than or equal to 2, and if the label on $v$ is larger than the label of all its neighbors. Fix an enumeration of the vertices of $G$ as $v_1,v_2,\ldots, v_{n}$ and a fix a set $S\subset V(G)$. We want to determine the number of distinct bijective labelings of the vertices of $G$, such that the vertices in $S$ are precisely the peaks of $G$. The set $S$ is called the \emph{peak set of the graph} $G$, and the set of all labelings with peak set $S$ is denoted by $\PSG$. This definition generalizes the study of peak sets of permutations, as that work is the special case of $G$ being the path graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we present an algorithm for constructing all of the bijective labelings in $\PSG$ for any $S\subseteq V(G)$. We also explore peak sets in certain families of graphs, including cycle graphs and joins of graphs.

On the largest planar graphs with everywhere positive combinatorial curvature (extended arxiv version)
Published • View Publication • BIB
A planar PCC graph is a simple connected planar graph with everywhere positive combinatorial curvature which is not a prism or an antiprism and with all vertices of degree at least 3. We prove that every planar PCC graph has at most 208 vertices, thus answering completely a question raised by DeVos and Mohar. The proof is based on a refined discharging technique and on an accurate low-scale combinatorical description of such graphs. We also prove that all faces in a planar PCC graph have at most 41 sides, and this result is sharp as well.
