Cyclic pseudo-{L}oupekine snarks
In 1976, Loupekine introduced (via Isaacs) a very general way of constructing new snarks from old snarks by cyclically connecting multipoles constructed from smaller snarks. In this paper, we generalize Loupekine's construction to produce a variety of snarks which can be drawn with $m$-fold rotational symmetry for $m\geq 3$ (and often, $m$ odd), constructed as $\mathbb{Z}_{m}$ lifts of \emph{voltage graphs} with certain properties; we call these snarks \emph{cyclic pseudo-Loupekine snarks}. In particular, we discuss three infinite families of snarks which can be drawn with $\mathbb{Z}_{m}$ rotational symmetry whose smallest element is constructed from 3 snarks with 3-fold rotational symmetry on 28 vertices; one family has the property that the oddness of the family increases with $m$. We also develop a new infinite family of snarks, of order $12m$ for each odd $m\geq 3$, which can be drawn with $m$-fold rotational symmetry and which are constructed beginning with a 3-edge-colorable graph, instead of a snark.

On weak $ε$-nets and the Radon number
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the Radon number characterizes the existence of weak nets in separable convexity spaces (an abstraction of the euclidean notion of convexity). The construction of weak nets when the Radon number is finite is based on Helly's property and on metric properties of VC classes. The lower bound on the size of weak nets when the Radon number is large relies on the chromatic number of the Kneser graph. As an application, we prove a boosting-type result for weak $ε$-nets.
Suboptimality of local algorithms for a class of max-cut problems
Published in Annals of Probability 2019, Vol. 47, No. 3, 1587-1618 • View Publication • BIB
We show that in random $K$-uniform hypergraphs of constant average degree, for even $K \geq 4$, local algorithms defined as factors of i.i.d. can not find nearly maximal cuts, when the average degree is sufficiently large. These algorithms have been used frequently to obtain lower bounds for the max-cut problem on random graphs, but it was not known whether they could be successful in finding nearly maximal cuts. This result follows from the fact that the overlap of any two nearly maximal cuts in such hypergraphs does not take values in a certain non-trivial interval - a phenomenon referred to as the overlap gap property - which is proved by comparing diluted models with large average degree with appropriate fully connected spin glass models and showing the overlap gap property in the latter setting.

Linear dependence between hereditary quasirandomness conditions
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25 (2018), P4.12 • View Publication • BIB
Answering a question of Simonovits and S\' os, Conlon, Fox, and Sudakov proved that for any nonempty graph $H$, and any $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $δ>0$ polynomial in $\varepsilon$, such that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with the property that every $U\subseteq V(G)$ contains $p^{e(H)}|U|^{v(H)}\pmδn^{v(H)}$ labeled copies of $H$, then $G$ is $(p,\varepsilon)$-quasirandom in the sense that every subset $U\subseteq G$ contains $\frac{1}{2}p|U|^{2}\pm\varepsilon n^{2}$ edges. They conjectured that $δ$ may be taken to be linear in $\varepsilon$ and proved this in the case that $H$ is a complete graph. We study a labelled version of this quasirandomness property proposed by Reiher and Schacht. Let $H$ be any nonempty graph on $r$ vertices $v_{1},\ldots,v_{r}$, and $\varepsilon>0$. We show that there exists $δ=δ(\varepsilon)>0$ linear in $\varepsilon$, such that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with the property that every sequence of $r$ subsets $U_{1},\ldots,U_{r}\subseteq V(G)$, the number of copies of $H$ with each $v_{i}$ in $U_{i}$ is $p^{e(H)}\prod|U_{i}|\pmδn^{v(H)}$, then $G$ is $(p,\varepsilon)$-quasirandom.

Enumerating Cliques in Direct Product Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The unitary Cayley graph of $\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z$, denoted $G_{\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z}$, is the graph with vertices $0,1,\ldots,$ $n-1$ in which two vertices are adjacent if and only if their difference is relatively prime to $n$. These graphs are central to the study of graph representations modulo integers, which were originally introduced by Erdős and Evans. We give a brief account of some results concerning these beautiful graphs and provide a short proof of a simple formula for the number of cliques of any order $m$ in the unitary Cayley graph $G_{\mathbb Z/n\mathbb Z}$. This formula involves an exciting class of arithmetic functions known as Schemmel totient functions, which we also briefly discuss. More generally, the proof yields a formula for the number of cliques of order $m$ in a direct product of balanced complete multipartite graphs.

The spectral radius of graphs without long cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Nikiforov conjectured that for a given integer $k\ge 2$, any graph $G$ of sufficiently large order $n$ with spectral radius $μ(G)\geq μ(S_{n,k})$ (or $μ(G)\ge μ(S_{n,k}^+))$ contains $C_{2k+1}$ or $C_{2k+2}$(or $C_{2k+2}$), unless $G=S_{n,k}$ (or $G=S_{n,k}^+)$, where $C_\ell$ is a cycle of length $\ell$ and $S_{n,k}=K_k\vee \overline{K_{n-k}}$, the join graph of a complete graph of order $k$ and an empty graph on $n-k$ vertices, and $S_{n,k}^+$ is the graph obtained from $S_{n,k}$ by adding an edge in the independent set of $S_{n,k}$. %This can be vie as spectral version of Erdös and Sós conjecture. In this paper, a weaker version of Nikiforov's conjecture is considered, we prove that for a given integer $k\ge 2$, any graph $G$ of sufficiently large order $n$ with spectral radius $μ(G)\geq μ(S_{n,k})$ (or $μ(G)\ge μ(S_{n,k}^+))$ %$C_{2k+1}$ or $C_{2k+2}$(or $C_{2k+2}$), unless $G=S_{n,k}$ (or $G=S_{n,k}^+)$$S_{n,k}$ ( or $S_{n,k}^+$) is the unique extremal graph with maximum radius among all of the graphs of order $n$ and contains a cycle $C_{\ell}$ with $\ell \geq 2k+1$ (or $C_{\ell}$ with $\ell \geq 2k+2$), unless $G=S_{n,k}$ (or $G=S_{n,k}^+)$. These results also imply a result of Nikiforov given in [Theorem 2, The spectral radius of graphs without paths and cycles of specified length, LAA, 2010].

Odd induced subgraphs in graphs with treewidth at most two
Published • View Publication • BIB
A long-standing conjecture asserts that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that every graph of order $n$ without isolated vertices contains an induced subgraph of order at least $cn$ with all degrees odd. Scott (1992) proved that every graph $G$ has an induced subgraph of order at least $|V(G)|/(2χ(G))$ with all degrees odd, where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number of $G$, this implies the conjecture for graphs with { bounded} chromatic number. But the factor $1/(2χ(G))$ seems to be not best possible, for example, Radcliffe and Scott (1995) proved $c=\frac 23$ for trees, Berman, Wang and Wargo (1997) showed that $c=\frac 25$ for graphs with maximum degree $3$, so it is interesting to determine the exact value of $c$ for special family of graphs. In this paper, we further confirm the conjecture for graphs with treewidth at most 2 with $c=\frac{2}{5}$, and the bound is best possible.
Regularity of Powers of edge ideal of very well-covered graphs
Let $k\geq 3$ be an integer and $G$ be a very well-covered graph with ${\rm odd-girth}(G)\geq 2k+1$. Assume that $I(G)$ is the edge ideal of $G$. We show that for every integer $s$ with $1\leq s\leq k-2$, we have ${\rm reg}(I(G)^s)=2s+ν(G)-1$, where $ν(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$.

Partial Domination in Graphs
Published in Iran J Sci Technol Trans Sci (2018) • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. For some $α$ with $0<α\leq 1$, a subset $S$ of $V$ is said to be a $α$-partial dominating set if $|N[S]|\geq α|V|$. The size of a smallest such $S$ is called the $α$-partial domination number and is denoted by $\mathsf{pd}_α(G)$. In this paper, we introduce $α$-partial domination number in a graph $G$ and study different bounds on the partial domination number of a graph $G$ with respect to its order, maximum degree, domination number etc., Moreover, $α$-partial domination spectrum is introduced and Nordhaus-Gaddum bounds on the partial domination number are studied.
Packing chromatic number versus chromatic and clique number
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets $V_i$, $i\in [k]$, where each $V_i$ is an $i$-packing. In this paper, we investigate for a given triple $(a,b,c)$ of positive integers whether there exists a graph $G$ such that $ω(G) = a$, $χ(G) = b$, and $χ_ρ(G) = c$. If so, we say that $(a, b, c)$ is realizable. It is proved that $b=c\ge 3$ implies $a=b$, and that triples $(2,k,k+1)$ and $(2,k,k+2)$ are not realizable as soon as $k\ge 4$. Some of the obtained results are deduced from the bounds proved on the packing chromatic number of the Mycielskian. Moreover, a formula for the independence number of the Mycielskian is given. A lower bound on $χ_ρ(G)$ in terms of $Δ(G)$ and $α(G)$ is also proved.

More on the Annihilator-Ideal Graph of a Commutative Ring
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity and $\Bbb A (R)$ be the set of ideals of $R$ with non-zero annihilator. The annihilator-ideal graph of $R$, denoted by $A_{I} (R) $, is a simple graph with the vertex set $\Bbb A(R)^{\ast} := \Bbb A (R) \setminus\lbrace (0) \rbrace $, and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if $\mathrm{Ann} _{R} (IJ) \neq \mathrm{Ann} _{R} (I) \cup \mathrm{Ann} _{R} (J)$. In this paper, we study the affinity between the annihilator-ideal graph and the annihilating-ideal graph $\Bbb A \Bbb G (R)$ (a well-known graph with the same vertices and two distinct vertices $I,J$ are adjacent if and only if $IJ=0$) associated with $R$. All rings whose $A_{I}(R) \neq \Bbb A \Bbb G (R)$ and $\mathrm{gr} (A_{I}(R)) =4$ are characterized. Among other results, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which $A_{I} (R)$ is a star graph.

Comparing mixing times on sparse random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is natural to expect that nonbacktracking random walk will mix faster than simple random walks, but so far this has only been proved in regular graphs. To analyze typical irregular graphs, let $G$ be a random graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree 3 and a degree distribution that has exponential tails. We determine the precise worst-case mixing time for simple random walk on $G$, and show that, with high probability, it exhibits cutoff at time $\mathbf{h}^{-1} \log n$, where $\mathbf{h}$ is the asymptotic entropy for simple random walk on a Galton--Watson tree that approximates $G$ locally. (Previously this was only known for typical starting points.) Furthermore, we show that this asymptotic mixing time is strictly larger than the mixing time of nonbacktracking walk, via a delicate comparison of entropies on the Galton-Watson tree.

Isoperimetry in integer lattices
Published in Discrete Analysis 2018:7, 16 pp • View Publication • BIB
The edge isoperimetric problem for a graph $G$ is to determine, for each $n$, the minimum number of edges leaving any set of $n$ vertices. In general this problem is NP-hard, but exact solutions are known in some special cases, for example when $G$ is the usual integer lattice. We solve the edge isoperimetric problem asymptotically for every Cayley graph on $\mathbb Z^d$. The near-optimal shapes that we exhibit are zonotopes generated by line segments corresponding to the generators of the Cayley graph.

A note on 2--bisections of claw--free cubic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A \emph{$k$--bisection} of a bridgeless cubic graph $G$ is a $2$--colouring of its vertex set such that the colour classes have the same cardinality and all connected components in the two subgraphs induced by the colour classes have order at most $k$. Ban and Linial conjectured that {\em every bridgeless cubic graph admits a $2$--bisection except for the Petersen graph}. In this note, we prove Ban--Linial's conjecture for claw--free cubic graphs.

Computing the number of induced copies of a fixed graph in a bounded degree graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we show that for any graph $H$ of order $m$ and any graph $G$ of order $n$ and maximum degree $Δ$ one can compute the number of subsets $S$ of $V(G)$ that induces a graph isomorphic to $H $in time $O(c^m\cdot n)$ for some constant $c = c(Δ) > 0$. This is essentially best possible.

Minimum Coprime Labelings for Operations on Graphs
A prime labeling of a graph of order $n$ is a labeling of the vertices with the integers $1$ to~$n$ in which adjacent vertices have relatively prime labels. A coprime labeling maintains the same criterion on adjacent vertices using any set of distinct positive integers. In this paper, we consider several families of graphs or products of graphs that have been shown to not have prime labelings and answer the natural question of how to label the vertices while minimizing the largest value in its set of labels.

Layout of random circulant graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A circulant graph H is defined on the set of vertices V=\left\{ 1,\ldots,n\right\} and edges E=\left\{ \left(i,j\right):\left|i-j\right|\equiv s\left(\textrm{mod}n\right),s\in S\right\} , where S\subseteq\left\{ 1,\ldots,\lceil\frac{n-1}{2}\rceil\right\} . A random circulant graph results from deleting edges of H with probability 1-p. We provide a polynomial time algorithm that approximates the solution to the minimum linear arrangement problem for random circulant graphs. We then bound the error of the approximation with high probability.

The Chromatic Symmetric Functions of Trivially Perfect Graphs and Cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Richard P. Stanley defined the chromatic symmetric function of a simple graph and has conjectured that every tree is determined by its chromatic symmetric function. Recently, Takahiro Hasebe and the author proved that the order quasisymmetric functions, which are analogs of the chromatic symmetric functions, distinguish rooted trees. In this paper, using a similar method, we prove that the chromatic symmetric functions distinguish trivially perfect graphs. Moreover, we also prove that claw-free cographs, that is, $ \{K_{1,3},P_{4}\} $-free graphs belong to a known class of $ e $-positive graphs.
The (theta, wheel)-free graphs Part III: cliques, stable sets and coloring
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, Volume 143, 2020, Pages 185-218 • View Publication • BIB
A hole in a graph is a chordless cycle of length at least 4. A theta is a graph formed by three paths between the same pair of distinct vertices so that the union of any two of the paths induces a hole. A wheel is a graph formed by a hole and a node that has at least 3 neighbors in the hole. In this series of papers we study the class of graphs that do not contain as an induced subgraph a theta nor a wheel. In Part II of the series we prove a decomposition theorem for this class, that uses clique cutsets and 2-joins, and consequently obtain a polynomial time recognition algorithm for the class. In this paper we further use this decomposition theorem to obtain polynomial time algorithms for maximum weight clique, maximum weight stable set and coloring problems. We also show that for a graph $G$ in the class, if its maximum clique size is $ω$, then its chromatic number is bounded by max$\{ω,3\}$, and that the class is 3-clique-colorable.
On the maximum diameter of path-pairable graphs
A graph is path-pairable if for any pairing of its vertices there exist edge disjoint paths joining the vertices in each pair. We obtain sharp bounds on the maximum possible diameter of path-pairable graphs which either have a given number of edges, or are c- degenerate. Along the way we show that a large family of graphs obtained by blowing up a path is path-pairable, which may be of independent interest.
