$k$-geometric graphs
A finite, simple and undirected graph $G = (V, E)$ with $p$ vertices and $q$ edges is said to be a $k$-geometric mean graph for a positive integer $k$ if there is an injection $ψ:V(G)\to \{k,k+1,\dots,k+q\}$ such that, when each edge $uv\in E(G)$ is assigned the label $\lfloor\sqrt{ψ(u)ψ(v)}\rfloor$ or $\lceil\sqrt{ψ(u)ψ(v)}\rceil$, the resulting edge label set is $\{k,k+1,...,k+q-1\}$ and $ψ$ is called a \emph{$k$-geometric mean labeling} of $G$. The special case $k=1$, a $1$-geometric mean labeling is called a geometric mean labeling, and a $1$-geometric mean graph is called a geometric mean graph. In this paper, we present new classes of geometric mean graphs. Then we introduce $k$-geometric mean labeling and prove some classes of graphs are $k$-geometric mean. We also study some classes of finite join of graphs that admit geometric mean labeling.

Domination in 3-tournaments
A 3-tournament is a complete 3-uniform hypergraph where each edge has a special vertex designated as its tail. A vertex set $X$ dominates $T$ if every vertex not in $X$ is contained in an edge whose tail is in $X$. The domination number of $T$ is the minimum size of such an $X$. Generalizing well-known results about usual (graph) tournaments, Gyárfás conjectured that there are 3-tournaments with arbitrarily large domination number, and that this is not the case if any four vertices induce two triples with the same tail. In this short note we solve both problems, proving the first conjecture and refuting the second.
Contagious Sets in Random Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the following activation process in undirected graphs: a vertex is active either if it belongs to a set of initially activated vertices or if at some point it has at least $r$ active neighbors. A \emph{contagious set} is a set whose activation results with the entire graph being active. Given a graph $G$, let $m(G,r)$ be the minimal size of a contagious set. We study this process on the binomial random graph $G:=G(n,p)$ with $p: = \frac{d}{n}$ and $1 \ll d \ll \left(\frac{n \log \log n}{\log^2 n}\right)^{\frac{r-1}{r}}$. Assuming $r > 1$ to be a constant that does not depend on $n$, we prove that $$m(G,r) = Θ\left(\frac{n}{d^{\frac{r}{r-1}}\log d}\right),$$ with high probability. We also show that the threshold probability for $m(G,r)=r$ to hold is $p^*=Θ\left(\frac{1}{(n \log^{r-1} n)^{1/r}}\right)$.

On Betti numbers of flag complexes with forbidden induced subgraphs
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 168 (2020) 567-600 • View Publication • BIB
We analyze the asymptotic extremal growth rate of the Betti numbers of clique complexes of graphs on n vertices not containing a fixed forbidden induced subgraph H. In particular, we prove a theorem of the alternative: for any H the growth rate achieves exactly one of five possible exponentials, that is, independent of the field of coefficients, the nth root of the maximal total Betti number over n-vertex graphs with no induced copy of H has a limit, as n tends to infinity, and, ranging over all H, exactly five different limits are attained. For the interesting case where H is the 4-cycle, the above limit is 1, and we prove a slightly superpolynomial upper bound.

Hypergraph Versals
Let H be a hypergraph on n vertices with the property that no edge contains another. We prove some results for a special case of the Isolation Lemma when the label set for the edges of H can only take two values. Given any set of vertices S and an edge e, the weight of S in e is the size of e plus the size of the intersection of S and e. A versal S for an edge e is a set of vertices with weight in e smaller than the weight in any other edge. We show that H always has at least n + 1 versals except if H is either the set of all singletons T_n or the complement of T_n or the 4-cycle graph. In those exceptional cases there are only n versals.

Extreme values of the stationary distribution of random walks on directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We examine the stationary distribution of random walks on directed graphs. In particular, we focus on the {\em principal ratio}, which is the ratio of maximum to minimum values of vertices in the stationary distribution. We give an upper bound for this ratio over all strongly connected graphs on $n$ vertices. We characterize all graphs achieving the upper bound and we give explicit constructions for these extremal graphs. Additionally, we show that under certain conditions, the principal ratio is tightly bounded. We also provide counterexamples to show the principal ratio cannot be tightly bounded under weaker conditions.
Maximal $m$-distance sets containing the representation of the Hamming graph $H(n,m)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set $X$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$ is called an $m$-distance set if the set of Euclidean distances between two distinct points in $X$ has size $m$. An $m$-distance set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is said to be maximal if there does not exist a vector $x$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ such that the union of $X$ and $\{x\}$ still has only $m$ distances. Bannai--Sato--Shigezumi (2012) investigated the maximal $m$-distance sets which contain the Euclidean representation of the Johnson graph $J(n,m)$. In this paper, we consider the same problem for the Hamming graph $H(n,m)$. The Euclidean representation of $H(n,m)$ is an $m$-distance set in $\mathbb{R}^{m(n-1)}$. We prove that the maximum $n$ is $m^2 + m - 1$ such that the representation of $H(n,m)$ is not maximal as an $m$-distance set. Moreover we classify the largest $m$-distance sets which contain the representation of $H(n,m)$ for $m\leq 4$ and any $n$. We also classify the maximal $2$-distance sets in $\mathbb{R}^{2n-1}$ which contain the representation of $H(n,2)$ for any $n$.

The b-continuity of graphs with large girth
Published • View Publication • BIB
A b-coloring of the vertices of a graph is a proper coloring where each color class contains a vertex which is adjacent to each other color class. The b-chromatic number of $G$ is the maximum integer $b(G)$ for which $G$ has a b-coloring with $b(G)$ colors. A graph $G$ is b-continuous if $G$ has a b-coloring with $k$ colors, for every integer $k$ in the interval $[χ(G),b(G)]$. It is known that not all graphs are b-continuous. In this article, we show that if $G$ has girth at least 10, then $G$ is b-continuous.
On the interplay between embedded graphs and delta-matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
The mutually enriching relationship between graphs and matroids has motivated discoveries in both fields. In this paper, we exploit the similar relationship between embedded graphs and delta-matroids. There are well-known connections between geometric duals of plane graphs and duals of matroids. We obtain analogous connections for various types of duality in the literature for graphs in surfaces of higher genus and delta-matroids. Using this interplay, we establish a rough structure theorem for delta-matroids that are twists of matroids, we translate Petrie duality on ribbon graphs to loop complementation on delta-matroids, and we prove that ribbon graph polynomials, such as the Penrose polynomial, the characteristic polynomial, and the transition polynomial, are in fact delta-matroidal. We also express the Penrose polynomial as a sum of characteristic polynomials.

Geometry of infinite planar maps with high degrees
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 22 (2017), no. 35 • View Publication • BIB
We study the geometry of infinite random Boltzmann planar maps with vertices of high degree. These correspond to the duals of the Boltzmann maps associated to a critical weight sequence $(q_{k})_{ k \geq 0}$ for the faces with polynomial decay $k^{-a}$ with $a \in ( 3/2, 5/2)$ which have been studied by Le Gall & Miermont as well as by Borot, Bouttier & Guitter. We show the existence of a phase transition for the geometry of these maps at $a = 2$. In the dilute phase corresponding to $a \in (2, 5/2)$ we prove that the volume of the ball of radius $r$ (for the graph distance) is of order $r^{\mathsf{d}}$ with $\mathsf{d}= (a-1/2)/(a-2)$, and we provide distributional scaling limits for the volume and perimeter process. In the dense phase corresponding to $a \in (3/2,2)$ the volume of the ball of radius $r$ is exponential in $r$. We also study the first-passage percolation (FPP) distance with exponential edge weights and show in particular that in the dense phase the FPP distance between the origin and infinity is finite. The latter implies in addition that the random lattices in the dense phase are transient. The proofs rely on the recent peeling process introduced in arXiv:1506.01590 and use ideas of arXiv:1412.5509 in the dilute phase.

Rational Mixed Tate Motivic Graphs
Published in Ann. K-Th. 2 (2017) 451-515 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study the combinatorics of a subcomplex of the Bloch-Kriz cycle complex [4] used to construct the category of mixed Tate motives. The algebraic cycles we consider properly contain the subalgebra of cycles that correspond to multiple logarithms (as defined in [12]). We associate an algebra of graphs to our subalgebra of algebraic cycles. We give a purely graphical criterion for admissibilty. We show that sums of bivalent graphs correspond to coboundary elements of the algebraic cycle complex. Finally, we compute the Hodge realization for an infinite family of algebraic cycles represented by sums of graphs that are not describable in the combinatorial language of [12].
On a lower bound for sorting signed permutations by reversals
Computing the reversal distances of signed permutations is an important topic in Bioinformatics. Recently, a new lower bound for the reversal distance was obtained via the plane permutation framework. This lower bound appears different from the existing lower bound obtained by Bafna and Pevzner through breakpoint graphs. In this paper, we prove that the two lower bounds are equal. Moreover, we confirm a related conjecture on skew-symmetric plane permutations, which can be restated as follows: let $p=(0,-1,-2,\ldots -n,n,n-1,\ldots 1)$ and let $$ \tilde{s}=(0,a_1,a_2,\ldots a_n,-a_n,-a_{n-1},\ldots -a_1) $$ be any long cycle on the set $\{-n,-n+1,\ldots 0,1,\ldots n\}$. Then, $n$ and $a_n$ are always in the same cycle of the product $p\tilde{s}$. Furthermore, we show the new lower bound via plane permutations can be interpreted as the topological genera of orientable surfaces associated to signed permutations.

Rainbow vertex-connection and forbidden subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A path in a vertex-colored graph is called \emph{vertex-rainbow} if its internal vertices have pairwise distinct colors. A graph $G$ is \emph{rainbow vertex-connected} if for any two distinct vertices of $G$, there is a vertex-rainbow path connecting them. For a connected graph $G$, the \emph{rainbow vertex-connection number} of $G$, denoted by $rvc(G)$, is defined as the minimum number of colors that are required to make $G$ rainbow vertex-connected. In this paper, we find all the families $\mathcal{F}$ of connected graphs with $|\mathcal{F}|\in\{1,2\}$, for which there is a constant $k_\mathcal{F}$ such that, for every connected $\mathcal{F}$-free graph $G$, $rvc(G)\leq diam(G)+k_\mathcal{F}$, where $diam(G)$ is the diameter of $G$.
Lengths of words in transformation semigroups generated by digraphs
Published in J. Algebraic Combinatorics 45 (2017), 149-170 • View Publication • BIB
Given a simple digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices (with $n\ge2$), there is a natural construction of a semigroup $\langle D\rangle$ associated with $D$. For any edge $(a,b)$ of $D$, let $a\to b$ be the idempotent of defect $1$ mapping $a$ to $b$ and fixing all vertices other than $a$; then define $\langle D\rangle$ to be the semigroup $\langle a\to b:(a,b)\in E(D)\rangle$. For $α\in \langle D \rangle$, let $\ell(D,α)$ be the minimal length of a word in $E(D)$ expressing $α$. When $D=K_n$ is the complete undirected graph, Howie and Iwahori, independently, obtained a formula to calculate $\ell(K_n,α)$, for any $α\in \langle K_n \rangle = \text{Sing}_n$; however, no analogous nontrivial results are known when $D \neq K_n$. In this paper, we characterise all simple digraphs $D$ such that either $\ell(D,α)$ is equal to Howie-Iwahori's formula for all $α\in \langle D \rangle$, or $\ell(D,α) = n - \text{fix}(α)$ for all $α\in \langle D \rangle$, or $\ell(D,α) = n - \text{rk}(α)$ for all $α\in \langle D \rangle$. When $D$ is an acyclic digraph and $α\in \langle D \rangle$, we find a tight upper bound for $\ell(D,α)$. Finally, we study the case when $D$ is a strong tournament (which corresponds to a smallest generating set of idempotents of defect $1$ of $\text{Sing}_n$), and we propose some conjectures.

Geometric properties of infinite graphs and the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study different geometric properties on infinite graphs, related to the weak-type boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal averaging operator. In particular, we analyze the connections between the doubling condition, having finite dilation and overlapping indices, uniformly bounded degree, the equidistant comparison property and the weak-type boundedness of the centered Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator. Several non-trivial examples of infinite graphs are given to illustrate the differences among these properties.

Spectral radius and Hamiltonicity of graphs with large minimum degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper presents sufficient conditions for Hamiltonian paths and cycles in graphs. Letting $λ\left( G\right) $ denote the spectral radius of the adjacency matrix of a graph $G,$ the main results of the paper are: (1) Let $k\geq1,$ $n\geq k^{3}/2+k+4,$ and let $G$ be a graph of order $n$, with minimum degree $δ\left( G\right) \geq k.$ If \[ λ\left( G\right) \geq n-k-1, \] then $G$ has a Hamiltonian cycle, unless $G=K_{1}\vee(K_{n-k-1}+K_{k})$ or $G=K_{k}\vee(K_{n-2k}+\overline{K}_{k})$. (2) Let $k\geq1,$ $n\geq k^{3}/2+k^{2}/2+k+5,$ and let $G$ be a graph of order $n$, with minimum degree $δ\left( G\right) \geq k.$ If \[ λ\left( G\right) \geq n-k-2, \] then $G$ has a Hamiltonian path, unless $G=K_{k}\vee(K_{n-2k-1}+\overline {K}_{k+1})$ or $G=K_{n-k-1}+K_{k+1}$ In addition, it is shown that in the above statements, the bounds on $n$ are tight within an additive term not exceeding $2$.

Some results on an algebro-geometric condition on graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Paolo Aluffi, inspired by an algebro-geometric problem, asked when the Kirchhoff polynomial of a graph is in the Jacobian ideal of the Kirchhoff polynomial of the same graph with one edge deleted. We give some results on which graph-edge pairs have this property. In particular we show that multiple edges can be reduced to double edges, we characterize which edges of wheel graphs satisfy the property, we consider a stronger condition which guarantees the property for any parallel join, and we find a class of series-parallel graphs with the property.
Well-quasi-ordering H-contraction-free graphs
A well-quasi-order is an order which contains no infinite decreasing sequence and no infinite collection of incomparable elements. In this paper, we consider graph classes defined by excluding one graph as contraction. More precisely, we give a complete characterization of graphs H such that the class of H-contraction-free graphs is well-quasi-ordered by the contraction relation. This result is the contraction analogue on the previous dichotomy theorems of Damsaschke [Induced subgraphs and well-quasi-ordering, Journal of Graph Theory, 14(4):427-435, 1990] on the induced subgraph relation, Ding [Subgraphs and well-quasi-ordering, Journal of Graph Theory, 16(5):489-502, 1992] on the subgraph relation, and Błasiok et al. [Induced minors and well-quasi-ordering, ArXiv e-prints, 1510.07135, 2015] on the induced minor relation.
