Guessing Numbers of Odd Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a given number of colours, $s$, the guessing number of a graph is the base $s$ logarithm of the size of the largest family of colourings of the vertex set of the graph such that the colour of each vertex can be determined from the colours of the vertices in its neighbourhood. An upper bound for the guessing number of the $n$-vertex cycle graph $C_n$ is $n/2$. It is known that the guessing number equals $n/2$ whenever $n$ is even or $s$ is a perfect square \cite{Christofides2011guessing}. We show that, for any given integer $s\geq 2$, if $a$ is the largest factor of $s$ less than or equal to $\sqrt{s}$, for sufficiently large odd $n$, the guessing number of $C_n$ with $s$ colours is $(n-1)/2 + \log_s(a)$. This answers a question posed by Christofides and Markström in 2011 \cite{Christofides2011guessing}. We also present an explicit protocol which achieves this bound for every $n$. Linking this to index coding with side information, we deduce that the information defect of $C_n$ with $s$ colours is $(n+1)/2 - \log_s(a)$ for sufficiently large odd $n$. Our results are a generalisation of the $s=2$ case which was proven in \cite{bar2011index}.

Spectral characterization of matchings in graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A spectral characterization of the matching number (the size of a maximum matching) of a graph is given. More precisely, it is shown that the graphs G of order n whose matching number is k are precisely those graphs with the maximum skew rank 2k such that for any given set of k distinct nonzero purely imaginary numbers there is a real skew-symmetric matrix A with graph G whose spectrum consists of the given k numbers, their conjugate pairs, and n-2k zeros.

Extremal results for odd cycles in sparse pseudorandom graphs
Published in Combinatorica 34 (2014), no. 4, 379-406 • View Publication • BIB
We consider extremal problems for subgraphs of pseudorandom graphs. For graphs $F$ and $Γ$ the generalized Turán density $π_F(Γ)$ denotes the density of a maximum subgraph of $Γ$, which contains no copy of~$F$. Extending classical Turán type results for odd cycles, we show that $π_{F}(Γ)=1/2$ provided $F$ is an odd cycle and $Γ$ is a sufficiently pseudorandom graph. In particular, for $(n,d,λ)$-graphs $Γ$, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all non-trivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$, our result holds for odd cycles of length $\ell$, provided \[ λ^{\ell-2}\ll \frac{d^{\ell-1}}n\log(n)^{-(\ell-2)(\ell-3)}\,. \] Up to the polylog-factor this verifies a conjecture of Krivelevich, Lee, and Sudakov. For triangles the condition is best possible and was proven previously by Sudakov, Szabó, and Vu, who addressed the case when $F$ is a complete graph. A construction of Alon and Kahale (based on an earlier construction of Alon for triangle-free $(n,d,λ)$-graphs) shows that our assumption on $Γ$ is best possible up to the polylog-factor for every odd $\ell\geq 5$.

The variation of the Randic index with regard to minimum and maximum degree
The variation of the Randić index $ R'(G) $ of a graph $G$ is defined by\ $R(G) = \sum_{uv \in E(G)}\frac 1{\max \{d(u) d(v)\}}$, where $d(u)$ is the degree of vertex $u$ and the summation extends over all edges $uv$ of $G$. Let $G(k,n)$ be the set of connected simple $n$-vertex graphs with minimum vertex degree $k$. In this paper we found in $G(k,n)$ graphs for which the variation of the Randić index attains its minimum value. When $k \leq \frac n2$ the extremal graphs are complete split graphs $K_{k,n-k}^*$, which only vertices of two degrees, i.e. degree $k$ and degree $n-1$, and the number of vertices of degree $k$ is $n-k$, while the number of vertices of degree $n-1$ is $k$. For $k \geq \frac n2$ the extremal graphs have also vertices of two degrees $k$ and $n-1$, and the number of vertices of degree $k$ is $\frac n2$. Further, we generalized results for graphs with given maximum degree.
The List Distinguishing Number of Kneser Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-distinguishable if the vertex set can be colored using $k$ colors such that no non-trivial automorphism fixes every color class, and the distinguishing number $D(G)$ is the least integer $k$ for which $G$ is $k$-distinguishable. If for each $v\in V(G)$ we have a list $L(v)$ of colors, and we stipulate that the color assigned to vertex $v$ comes from its list $L(v)$ then $G$ is said to be $\mathcal{L}$-distinguishable where $\mathcal{L} =\{L(v)\}_{v\in V(G)}$. The list distinguishing number of a graph, denoted $D_l(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ such that every collection of lists $\mathcal{L}$ with $|L(v)|=k$ admits an $\mathcal{L}$-distinguishing coloring. In this paper, we prove that $D_l(G)=D(G)$ when $G$ is a Kneser graph.

A sequence of triangle-free pseudorandom graphs

A construction of Alon yields a sequence of highly pseudorandom triangle-free graphs with edge density significantly higher than one might expect from comparison with random graphs. We give an alternative construction for such graphs.

On 2K2-free graphs - Structural and Combinatorial View
A connected graph is 2K2-free if it does not contain a pair of independent edges as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we present the structural characterization of minimal vertex separator and show that there are polynomial number of minimal vertex separators in 2K2-free graphs. Further, using the enumeration we show that finding minimum connected vertex separator in 2K2-free graphs is polynomial time solvable. We highlight that finding minimum connected vertex separator is NP-complete in Chordality 5 graphs, which is a super graph class of 2K2-free graphs. Other study includes, enumeration of all distinct maximal independent sets and testing 2K2-free graphs. Also, we present an polynomial time algorithm for feedback vertex set problem in the subclass of 2K2-free graphs.

Isotropic matroids III: Connectivity
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 24(2), #P2.49 (2017) • View Publication • BIB
The isotropic matroid $M[IAS(G)]$ of a graph $G$ is a binary matroid, which is equivalent to the isotropic system introduced by Bouchet. In this paper we discuss four notions of connectivity related to isotropic matroids and isotropic systems. We show that the isotropic system connectivity defined by Bouchet is equivalent to vertical connectivity of $M[IAS(G)]$, and if $G$ has at least four vertices, then $M[IAS(G)]$ is vertically 5-connected if and only if $G$ is prime (in the sense of Cunningham's split decomposition). We also show that $M[IAS(G)]$ is $3$-connected if and only if $G$ is connected and has neither a pendant vertex nor a pair of twin vertices. Our most interesting theorem is that if $G$ has $n\geq7$ vertices then $M[IAS(G)]$ is not vertically $n$-connected. This abstract-seeming result is equivalent to the more concrete assertion that $G$ is locally equivalent to a graph with a vertex of degree $<\frac{n-1}{2}$.

On the structure of graphs with given odd girth and large minimum degree
Published in J. Graph Theory 80 (2015), no. 1, 69-81 • View Publication • BIB
We study minimum degree conditions for which a graph with given odd girth has a simple structure. For example, the classical work of Andrásfai, Erd\H os, and Sós implies that every $n$-vertex graph with odd girth $2k+1$ and minimum degree bigger than $\frac{2}{2k+1}n$ must be bipartite. We consider graphs with a weaker condition on the minimum degree. Generalizing results of Häggkvist and of Häggkvist and Jin for the cases $k=2$ and $3$, we show that every $n$-vertex graph with odd girth $2k+1$ and minimum degree bigger than $\frac{3}{4k}n$ is homomorphic to the cycle of length $2k+1$. This is best possible in the sense that there are graphs with minimum degree $\frac{3}{4k}n$ and odd girth $2k+1$ which are not homomorphic to the cycle of length $2k+1$. Similar results were obtained by Brandt and Ribe-Baumann.

Distinguishing number and distinguishing index of certain graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The distinguishing number (index) $D(G)$ ($D'(G)$) of a graph $G$ is the least integer $d$ such that $G$ has an vertex labeling (edge labeling) with $d$ labels that is preserved only by a trivial automorphism. In this paper we compute these two parameters for some specific graphs. Also we study the distinguishing number and the distinguishing index of corona product of two graphs.
The Abelian Sandpile Model on Fractal Graphs
We study the Abelian sandpile model (ASM), a process where grains of sand are placed on a graph's vertices. When the number of grains on a vertex is at least its degree, one grain is distributed to each neighboring vertex. This model has been shown to form fractal patterns on the integer lattice, and using these fractal patterns as motivation, we consider the model on graph approximations of post critically finite (p.c.f) fractals. We determine asymptotic behavior of the diameter of sites toppled and characterize graphs which exhibit a periodic number of grains with respect to the initial placement.
Tremain equiangular tight frames
Published • View Publication • BIB
Equiangular tight frames provide optimal packings of lines through the origin. We combine Steiner triple systems with Hadamard matrices to produce a new infinite family of equiangular tight frames. This in turn leads to new constructions of strongly regular graphs and distance-regular antipodal covers of the complete graph.
On maximal tail probability of sums of nonnegative, independent and identically distributed random variables
We consider the problem of finding the optimal upper bound for the tail probability of a sum of $k$ nonnegative, independent and identically distributed random variables with given mean $x$. For $k=1$ the answer is given by Markov's inequality and for $k=2$ the solution was found by Hoeffding and Shrikhande in 1955. We solve the problem for $k=3$ as well as for general $k$ and $x\leq1/(2k-1)$ by showing that it follows from the fractional version of an extremal graph theory problem of Erdős on matchings in hypergraphs.
Stable sets in {ISK4,wheel}-free graphs
Published in Algorithmica 80, 415-447 (2018) • View Publication • BIB
An ISK4 in a graph G is an induced subgraph of G that is isomorphic to a subdivision of K4 (the complete graph on four vertices). A wheel is a graph that consists of a chordless cycle, together with a vertex that has at least three neighbors in the cycle. A graph is {ISK4,wheel}-free if it has no ISK4 and does not contain a wheel as an induced subgraph. We give an O(|V(G)|^7)-time algorithm to compute the maximum weight of a stable set in an input weighted {ISK4,wheel}-free graph G with non-negative integer weights.

Mixing Times of Markov Chains on Degree Constrained Orientations of Planar Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 3, Graph Theory (February 3, 2017) dmtcs:1376 • View Publication • BIB
We study Markov chains for $α$-orientations of plane graphs, these are orientations where the outdegree of each vertex is prescribed by the value of a given function $α$. The set of $α$-orientations of a plane graph has a natural distributive lattice structure. The moves of the up-down Markov chain on this distributive lattice corresponds to reversals of directed facial cycles in the $α$-orientation. We have a positive and several negative results regarding the mixing time of such Markov chains. A 2-orientation of a plane quadrangulation is an orientation where every inner vertex has outdegree 2. We show that there is a class of plane quadrangulations such that the up-down Markov chain on the 2-orientations of these quadrangulations is slowly mixing. On the other hand the chain is rapidly mixing on 2-orientations of quadrangulations with maximum degree at most 4. Regarding examples for slow mixing we also revisit the case of 3-orientations of triangulations which has been studied before by Miracle et al.. Our examples for slow mixing are simpler and have a smaller maximum degree, Finally we present the first example of a function $α$ and a class of plane triangulations of constant maximum degree such that the up-down Markov chain on the $α$-orientations of these graphs is slowly mixing.

Weak oddness as an approximation of oddness and resistance in cubic graphs
We introduce weak oddness $ω_{\textrm w}$, a new measure of uncolourability of cubic graphs, defined as the least number of odd components in an even factor. For every bridgeless cubic graph $G$, $ρ(G)\leω_{\textrm w}(G)\leω(G)$, where $ρ(G)$ denotes the resistance of $G$ and $ω(G)$ denotes the oddness of $G$, so this new measure is an approximation of both oddness and resistance. We demonstrate that there are graphs $G$ satisfying $ρ(G) < ω_{\textrm w}(G) < ω(G)$, and that the difference between any two of those three measures can be arbitrarily large. The construction implies that if we replace a vertex of a cubic graph with a triangle, then its oddness can decrease by an arbitrarily large amount.

On the Minimum Number of Edges in Triangle-Free 5-Critical Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kostochka and Yancey proved that every 5-critical graph G satisfies: |E(G)|>= (9/4)|V(G)| - 5/4. A construction of Ore gives an infinite family of graphs meeting this bound. We prove that there exists e,d > 0 such that if G is a 5-critical graph, then |E(G)| >= (9/4 + e)|V(G)|- 5/4 - dT(G), where T(G) is the maximum number of vertex-disjoint cliques of size three or four where cliques of size four have twice the weight of a clique of size three. As a corollary, a triangle-free 5-critical graph G satisfies: |E(G)|>=(9/4 + e)|V(G)| - 5/4.

Number of fixed points and disjoint cycles in monotone Boolean networks
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 31(3):1702-1725, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
Given a digraph $G$, a lot of attention has been deserved on the maximum number $φ(G)$ of fixed points in a Boolean network $f:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}^n$ with $G$ as interaction graph. In particular, a central problem in network coding consists in studying the optimality of the classical upper bound $φ(G)\leq 2^τ$, where $τ$ is the minimum size of a feedback vertex set of $G$. In this paper, we study the maximum number $φ_m(G)$ of fixed points in a {\em monotone} Boolean network with interaction graph $G$. We establish new upper and lower bounds on $φ_m(G)$ that depends on the cycle structure of $G$. In addition to $τ$, the involved parameters are the maximum number $ν$ of vertex-disjoint cycles, and the maximum number $ν^{*}$ of vertex-disjoint cycles verifying some additional technical conditions. We improve the classical upper bound $2^τ$ by proving that $φ_m(G)$ is at most the largest sub-lattice of $\{0,1\}^τ$ without chain of size $ν+1$, and without another forbidden-pattern of size $2ν^{*}$. Then, we prove two optimal lower bounds: $φ_m(G)\geq ν+1$ and $φ_m(G)\geq 2^{ν^{*}}$. As a consequence, we get the following characterization: $φ_m(G)=2^τ$ if and only if $ν^{*}=τ$. As another consequence, we get that if $c$ is the maximum length of a chordless cycle of $G$ then $2^{ν/3^c}\leqφ_m(G)\leq 2^{cν}$. Finally, with the technics introduced, we establish an upper bound on the number of fixed points of any Boolean network according to its signed interaction graph.
