An Algorithm for Computing with Brauer's Group Equivariant Neural Network Layers
The learnable, linear neural network layers between tensor power spaces of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ that are equivariant to the orthogonal group, $O(n)$, the special orthogonal group, $SO(n)$, and the symplectic group, $Sp(n)$, were characterised in arXiv:2212.08630. We present an algorithm for multiplying a vector by any weight matrix for each of these groups, using category theoretic constructions to implement the procedure. We achieve a significant reduction in computational cost compared with a naive implementation by making use of Kronecker product matrices to perform the multiplication. We show that our approach extends to the symmetric group, $S_n$, recovering the algorithm of arXiv:2303.06208 in the process.
On the period of Pell-Narayana sequence in some groups
In this paper, the Pell-Narayana sequence modulo m is studied. The paper outlines the definition of Pell-Narayana numbers and some of their combinatorial links with Eulerian, Catalan and Delannoy numbers and other special functions. From the definition, the Pell-Narayana orbit of a 2-generator group for a generating pair $(x, y) \in G$ is defined, so that the lengths of the period of the Pell-Narayana orbit can be examined. These yield in turn the Pell-Narayana lengths of the polyhedral group and the binary polyhedral group for the generating pair $(x,y)$ and associated properties. Also, the period of the Pell-Narayana orbit of the groups $Q_8$, $Q_8 \times\mathbb{Z}_{2m} $ and $Q_8 \times_φ\mathbb{Z}_{2m} $ for $m \geq 3$ were obtained.
Powers in finite unitary groups
Let $\text{U}(n,\mathbb{F}_{q^2})$ denote the subgroup of unitary matrices of the general linear group $\text{GL}(n,\mathbb{F}_{q^2})$ which fixes a Hermitian form and $M\geq 2$ an integer. This is a companion paper to the previous works where the elements of the groups $\text{GL}(n,\mathbb{F}_{q})$, $\text{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{F}_{q})$, $\text{O}^{\pm}(2n,\mathbb{F}_{q})$ and $\text{O}(2n+1,\mathbb{F}_{q})$ which has an $M$-th root in the concerned group, have been described. Here we will describe the $M$-th powers in unitary groups for the regular semisimple, semisimple and cyclic elements. Our methods are parallel to those of the Memoir ``A generating function approach to the enumeration of matrices in classical groups over finite fields" by Fulman, Neumann and Praeger.
Mobility of geometric constraint systems with extrusion symmetry
If we take a (bar-joint) framework, prepare an identical copy of this framework, translate it by some vector $τ$, and finally join corresponding points of the two copies, then we obtain a framework with `extrusion' symmetry in the direction of $τ$. This process may be repeated $t$ times to obtain a framework whose underlying graph has $\mathbb{Z}_2^t$ as a subgroup of its automorphism group and which has `$t$-fold extrusion' symmetry. We show that while $t$-fold extrusion symmetry is not a point-group symmetry, the rigidity matrix of a framework with $t$-fold extrusion symmetry can still be transformed into a block-decomposed form in the analogous way as for point-group symmetric frameworks. This allows us to use Fowler-Guest-type character counts to analyse the mobility of such frameworks. We show that this entire theory also extends to the more general point-hyperplane frameworks with $t$-fold extrusion symmetry. Moreover, we show that under suitable regularity conditions the infinitesimal flexes we detect with our symmetry-adapted counts extend to finite (continuous) motions. Finally, we establish an algorithm that checks for finite motions via linearly displacing framework points along velocity vectors of infinitesimal motions.

We consider the subalgebra $Δ$ in the group algebra of the symmetric group $G=S_{n_1+\dots+n_ν}$ consisting of all functions invariant with respect to left and right shifts by elements of the Young subgroup $H:=S_{n_1}\times \dots \times S_{n_ν}$. We discuss structure constants of the algebra $Δ$ and construct an algebra with continuous parameters $n_1$ extrapolating algebras $Δ$, it can be also can be rewritten as an asymptotic algebra as $n_j\to\infty$ (for fixed $ν$). We show that there is a natural map from the Lie algebra of the group of pure braids to $Δ$ (and therefore this Lie algebra acts in spaces of multiplicities of the quasiregular representation of the group $G$ in functions on $G/H$).
Multidimensional polynomial patterns over finite fields: bounds, counting estimates and Gowers norm control
We examine multidimensional polynomial progressions involving linearly independent polynomials in finite fields, proving power saving bounds for sets lacking such configurations. This jointly generalises earlier results of Peluse (for the single dimensional case) and the author (for distinct degree polynomials). In contrast to the cases studied in the aforementioned two papers, a usual PET induction argument does not give Gowers norm control over multidimensional progressions that involve polynomials of the same degrees. The main challenge is therefore to obtain Gowers norm control, and we accomplish this for all multidimensional polynomial progressions with pairwise independent polynomials. The key inputs are: (1) a quantitative version of a PET induction scheme developed in ergodic theory by Donoso, Koutsogiannis, Ferré-Moragues and Sun, (2) a quantitative concatenation result for Gowers box norms in arbitrary finite abelian groups, motivated by earlier results of Tao, Ziegler, Peluse and Prendiville; (3) an adaptation to combinatorics of the box norm smoothing technique, recently developed in the ergodic setting by the author and Frantzikinakis; and (4) a new version of the multidimensional degree lowering argument.
Row-Column duality and combinatorial topological strings

Integrality properties of partial sums over irreducible representations, along columns of character tables of finite groups, were recently derived using combinatorial topological string theories (CTST). These CTST were based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theories of flat $G$-bundles for finite groups $G$ in two dimensions, denoted $G$-TQFTs. We define analogous combinatorial topological strings related to two dimensional TQFTs based on fusion coefficients of finite groups. These TQFTs are denoted as $R(G)$-TQFTs and allow analogous integrality results to be derived for partial row sums of characters over conjugacy classes along fixed rows. This relation between the $G$-TQFTs and $R(G)$-TQFTs defines a row-column duality for character tables, which provides a physical framework for exploring the mathematical analogies between rows and columns of character tables. These constructive proofs of integrality are complemented with the proof of similar and complementary results using the more traditional Galois theoretic framework for integrality properties of character tables. The partial row and column sums are used to define generalised partitions of the integer row and column sums, which are of interest in combinatorial representation theory.
Using mixed dihedral groups to construct normal Cayley graphs, and a new bipartite $2$-arc-transitive graph which is not a Cayley graph
A \emph{mixed dihedral group} is a group $H$ with two disjoint subgroups $X$ and $Y$, each elementary abelian of order $2^n$, such that $H$ is generated by $X\cup Y$, and $H/H'\cong X\times Y$. In this paper we give a sufficient condition such that the automorphism group of the Cayley graph $\Cay(H,(X\cup Y)\setminus\{1\})$ is equal to $H: A(H,X,Y)$, where $A(H,X,Y)$ is the setwise stabiliser in $\Aut(H)$ of $X\cup Y$. We use this criterion to resolve a questions of Li, Ma and Pan from 2009, by constructing a $2$-arc transitive normal cover of order $2^{53}$ of the complete bipartite graph $\K_{16,16}$ and prove that it is \emph{not} a Cayley graph.
On the strong connectivity of the 2-Engel graphs of almost simple groups
The Engel graph of a finite group $G$ is a directed graph encoding the pairs of elements in $G$ satisfying some Engel word. Recent work of Lucchini and the third author shows that, except for a few well-understood cases, the Engel graphs of almost simple groups are strongly connected. In this paper, we give a refinement to this analysis.
Measure doubling of small sets in $\mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$
Let $\mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$ be the 3D-rotation group equipped with the real-manifold topology and the normalized Haar measure $μ$. Resolving a problem by Breuillard and Green, we show that if $A \subseteq \mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$ is an open subset with sufficiently small measure, then $$ μ(A^2) > 3.99 μ(A).$$ We also show a more general result for the product of two sets, which can be seen as a Brunn-Minkowski-type inequality for sets with small measure in $\mathrm{SO}(3,\mathbb{R})$.
Flag-transitive automorphism groups of $2$-designs with $λ\geq (r,λ)^2$ are not product type
In this paper we show that a flag-transitive automorphism group $G$ of a non-trivial $2$-$(v,k,λ)$ design with $λ\geq (r, λ)^2$ is not of product action type. In conclusion, $G$ is a primitive group of affine or almost simple type.

Affine Bruhat--Tits buildings are geometric spaces extracting the combinatorics of algebraic groups. The building of $\mathrm{PGL}$ parametrizes flags of subspaces/lattices in or, equivalently, norms on a fixed finite-dimensional vector space, up to homothety. It has first been studied by Goldman and Iwahori as a piecewise-linear analogue of symmetric spaces. The space of seminorms compactifies the space of norms and admits a natural surjective restriction map from the Berkovich analytification of projective space that factors the natural tropicalization map. Inspired by Payne's result that the analytification is the limit of all tropicalizations, we show that the space of seminorms is the limit of all tropicalized linear embeddings $ι\colon\mathbb{P}^r\hookrightarrow\mathbb{P}^n$ and prove a faithful tropicalization result for compactified linear spaces. The space of seminorms is in fact the tropical linear space associated to the universal realizable valuated matroid.
Inductive and divisional posets

We call a poset factorable if its characteristic polynomial has all positive integer roots. Inspired by inductive and divisional freeness of a central hyperplane arrangement, we introduce and study the notion of inductive posets and their superclass of divisional posets. It then motivates us to define the so-called inductive and divisional abelian (Lie group) arrangements, whose posets of layers serve as the main examples of our posets. Our first main result is that every divisional poset is factorable. Our second main result shows that the class of inductive posets contains strictly supersolvable posets, the notion recently introduced due to Bibby and Delucchi (2022). This result can be regarded as an extension of a classical result due to Jambu and Terao (1984), which asserts that every supersolvable hyperplane arrangement is inductively free. Our third main result is an application to toric arrangements, which states that the toric arrangement defined by an arbitrary ideal of a root system of type $A$, $B$ or $C$ with respect to the root lattice is inductive.

The factorization number $F_2(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the number of all possible factorizations of $G=HK$ as product of its subgroups $H$ and $K$, while the subgroup commutativity degree $\mathrm{sd}(G)$ of $G$ is the probability of finding two commuting subgroups in $G$ at random. It is known that $\mathrm{sd}(G)$ can be expressed in terms of $F_2(G)$. Denoting by $\mathrm{L}(G)$ the subgroups lattice of $G$, the non--permutability graph of subgroups $Γ_{\mathrm{L}(G)}$ of $G$ is the graph with vertices in $\mathrm{L}(G) \setminus \mathfrak{C}_{\mathrm{L}(G)}(\mathrm{L}(G))$, where $\mathfrak{C}_{\mathrm{L}(G)}(\mathrm{L}(G))$ is the smallest sublattice of $\mathrm{L}(G)$ containing all permutable subgroups of $G$, and edges obtained by joining two vertices $X,Y$ such that $XY\neq YX$. The spectral properties of $Γ_{\mathrm{L}(G)}$ have been recently investigated in connection with $F_2(G)$ and $\mathrm{sd}(G)$. Here we show a new combinatorial formula, which allows us to express $F_2(G)$, and so $\mathrm{sd}(G)$, in terms of adjacency and Laplacian matrices of $Γ_{\mathrm{L}(G)}$.
Fake degrees of classical Weyl groups
We compute the fake degrees of representations of classical Weyl groups in terms of domino tableaux.
Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of certain Cayley tables
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be an arbitrary field. In this paper, we continue studying the Terwilliger algebras of association schemes over $\mathbb{F}$ that were called the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of association schemes in [8]. We determine the algebraic structures of the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of the association schemes induced from the Cayley tables of elementary abelian $2$-groups, which provides infinite many examples and counterexamples for the study of the Terwilliger $\mathbb{F}$-algebras of association schemes.
Decoding twisted permutation codes
We consider twisted permutation codes, a class of frequency permutation arrays obtained from finite groups with multiple permutation representations of the same degree, introduced by Gillespie, Praeger and Spiga (and later studied by Akbari, Gillespie and Praeger), and develop a decoding algorithm for such codes based on earlier work of the first author for permutation group codes. In particular, we show how to implement this algorithm for an infinite family of groups considered by Akbari, Gillespie and Praeger.
Embedding problem between right-angled Artin groups
Given a graph $Γ$, the right-angled Artin group $A(Γ)$ is given by the presentation $\langle u \in V(Γ) \mid [u,v]=1, \ \{u,v\} \in E(Γ) \rangle$. The Embedding Problem in right-angled Artin groups asks, given two finite graphs $Φ,Ψ$, how to determine whether or not $A(Φ)$ is isomorphic to a subgroup of $A(Ψ)$. These are the notes of a mini-course given at the CIRM in April 2022, dedicated to a geometric point of view on this embedding problem, based on quasi-median graphs.
Three New Refined Arnold Families
The Springer numbers, introduced by Arnold, are generalizations of Euler numbers in the sense of Coxeter groups. They appear as the row sums of a double triangular array $(v_{n,k})$ of integers, $1\leq|k|\leq n$, defined recursively by a boustrophedon algorithm. We say a sequence of combinatorial objects $(X_{n,k})$ is an Arnold family if $X_{n,k}$ is counted by $v_{n,k}$. A polynomial refinement $V_{n,k}(t)$ of $v_{n,k}$, together with the combinatorial interpretations in several combinatorial structures was introduced by Eu and Fu recently. In this paper, we provide three new Arnold families of combinatorial objects, namely the cycle-up-down permutations, the valley signed permutations and Knuth's flip equivalences on permutations. We shall find corresponding statistics to realize the refined polynomial arrays.

We show that, if $Γ$ is a point group of $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ of order two for some $k\geq 2$ and $\mathcal S$ is a $k$-pseudomanifold which has a free automorphism of order two, then either $\mathcal S$ has a $Γ$-symmetric infinitesimally rigid realisation in $\mathbb{R}^{k+1}$ or $k=2$ and $Γ$ is a half-turn rotation group. This verifies a conjecture made by Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zhang for the case when $Γ$ is a point-inversion group. Our result implies that Stanley's lower bound theorem for centrally symmetric polytopes extends to pseudomanifolds with a free simplicial involution, thus verifying (the inequality part) of another conjecture of Klee, Nevo, Novik and Zheng. Both results actually apply to a much larger class of simplicial complexes, namely the circuits of the simplicial matroid. The proof of our rigidity result adapts earlier ideas of Fogelsanger to the setting of symmetric simplicial complexes.
