Random Schreier graphs and expanders
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. (2022) • View PublicationBIB
Let the group $G$ act transitively on the finite set $Ω$, and let $S \subseteq G$ be closed under taking inverses. The Schreier graph $Sch(G \circlearrowleft Ω,S)$ is the graph with vertex set $Ω$ and edge set $\{ (ω,ω^s) : ω\in Ω, s \in S \}$. In this paper, we show that random Schreier graphs on $C \log|Ω|$ elements exhibit a (two-sided) spectral gap with high probability, magnifying a well known theorem of Alon and Roichman for Cayley graphs. On the other hand, depending on the particular action of $G$ on $Ω$, we give a lower bound on the number of elements which are necessary to provide a spectral gap. We use this method to estimate the spectral gap when $G$ is nilpotent.
Toric orbifolds associated with partitioned weight polytopes in classical types

Given a root system $Φ$ of type $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$, or $D_n$ in Euclidean space $E$, let $W$ be the associated Weyl group. For a point $p \in E$ not orthogonal to any of the roots in $Φ$, we consider the $W$-permutohedron $P_W$, which is the convex hull of the $W$-orbit of $p$. The representation of $W$ on the rational cohomology ring $H^\ast(X_Φ)$ of the toric variety $X_Φ$ associated to (the normal fan to) $P_W$ has been studied by various authors. Let $\{s_1,\ldots,s_n\}$ be a complete set of simple reflections in $W$. For $K \subseteq [n]$, let $W_K$ be the standard parabolic subgroup of $W$ generated by $\{s_k:k \in K\}$. We show that the fixed subring $H^\ast(X_Φ)^{W_K}$ is isomorphic to the cohomology ring of the toric variety $X_Φ(K)$ associated to a polytope obtained by intersecting $P_W$ with half-spaces bounded by reflecting hyperplanes for the given generators of $W_K$. By a result of Balibanu--Crooks, the cohomology rings $H^\ast(X_Φ(K))$ are isomorphic with cohomology rings of certain regular Hessenberg varieties.

Neighbour-Transitive Codes and Partial Spreads in Generalised Quadrangles
A code $C$ in a generalised quadrangle ${\mathcal Q}$ is defined to be a subset of the vertex set of the point-line incidence graph $\varGamma$ of ${\mathcal Q}$. The minimum distance $δ$ of $C$ is the smallest distance between a pair of distinct elements of $C$. The graph metric gives rise to the distance partition $\{C,C_1,\ldots,C_ρ\}$, where $ρ$ is the maximum distance between any vertex of $\varGamma$ and its nearest element of $C$. Since the diameter of $\varGamma$ is $4$, both $ρ$ and $δ$ are at most $4$. If $δ=4$ then $C$ is a partial ovoid or partial spread of ${\mathcal Q}$, and if, additionally, $ρ=2$ then $C$ is an ovoid or a spread. A code $C$ in ${\mathcal Q}$ is neighbour-transitive if its automorphism group acts transitively on each of the sets $C$ and $C_1$. Our main results i) classify all neighbour-transitive codes admitting an insoluble group of automorphisms in thick classical generalised quadrangles that correspond to ovoids or spreads, and ii) give two infinite families and six sporadic examples of neighbour-transitive codes with minimum distance $δ=4$ in the classical generalised quadrangle ${\mathsf W}_3(q)$ that are not ovoids or spreads.
Recursive sequences attached to modular representations of finite groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The core of a finite-dimensional modular representation $M$ of a finite group $G$ is its largest non-projective summand. We prove that the dimensions of the cores of $M^{\otimes n}$ have algebraic Hilbert series when $M$ is Omega-algebraic, in the sense that the non-projective summands of $M^{\otimes n}$ fall into finitely many orbits under the action of the syzygy operator $Ω$. Similarly, we prove that these dimension sequences are eventually linearly recursive when $M$ is what we term $Ω^{+}$-algebraic. This partially answers a conjecture by Benson and Symonds. Along the way, we also prove a number of auxiliary permanence results for linear recurrence under operations on multi-variable sequences.

Teoria Geometrica dei Gruppi Spazi CAT(0), Teorema di Gromov e oriented right-angled Artin groups
The aim of this thesis is to present the notion of spaces whose curvature is bounded above, and to give some of its application in the context of Combinatorial Algebra. The thesis is made of two parts, one of theoretic purpose, and the other applicative. In particular, we present an application to the notion of $CAT(0)$-space and one to the Gromov Theorem for cubical complexes. In the final part we present a new class of discrete groups generalizing the well-known right-angled Artin groups. We concoct a cubical CAT(0)-complex on which the group acts, from whom we extract some algebraic properties of such groups.

Combinatorial invariance conjecture for $\widetilde{A}_2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
The combinatorial invariance conjecture (due independently to G. Lusztig and M. Dyer) predicts that if $[x,y]$ and $[x',y']$ are isomorphic Bruhat posets (of possibly different Coxeter systems), then the corresponding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials are equal, that is, $P_{x,y}(q)=P_{x',y'}(q)$. We prove this conjecture for the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{A}_2$. This is the first infinite group with non-trivial Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials where the conjecture is proved.

Correction of the Lusztig-Williamson Billiards Conjecture
A new algorithm allows us to calculate many new tilting characters for $SL_3$, $SP_4$, $G_2$, $SL_4$ and potentially many other groups. These calculations show that the Lusztig-Williamson Billiards Conjecture needs to be corrected. In this paper we present the new results calculated for $SL_3$ and a correction of the conjecture.

Two-arc-transitive graphs of odd order -- II
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 96 (2021) 103354 • View PublicationBIB
It is shown that each subgroup of odd index in an alternating group of degree at least 10 has all insoluble composition factors to be alternating. A classification is then given of 2-arc-transitive graphs of odd order admitting an alternating group or a symmetric group. This is the second of a series of papers aiming towards a classification of 2-arc-transitive graphs of odd order.

Subgroup regular sets in Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a graph with vertex set $V$, and let $a$ and $b$ be nonnegative integers. A subset $C$ of $V$ is called an $(a,b)$-regular set in $Γ$ if every vertex in $C$ has exactly $a$ neighbors in $C$ and every vertex in $V\setminus C$ has exactly $b$ neighbors in $C$. In particular, $(0, 1)$-regular sets and $(1, 1)$-regular sets in $\Ga$ are called perfect codes and total perfect codes in $\Ga$, respectively. A subset $C$ of a group $G$ is said to be an $(a,b)$-regular set of $G$ if there exists a Cayley graph of $G$ which admits $C$ as an $(a,b)$-regular set. In this paper we prove that, for any generalized dihedral group $G$ or any group $G$ of order $4p$ or $pq$ for some primes $p$ and $q$, if a nontrivial subgroup $H$ of $G$ is a $(0, 1)$-regular set of $G$, then it must also be an $(a,b)$-regular set of $G$ for any $0\leqslant a\leqslant|H|-1$ and $0\leqslant b\leqslant |H|$ such that $a$ is even when $|H|$ is odd. A similar result involving $(1, 1)$-regular sets of such groups is also obtained in the paper.

Polynomial ergodic averages for certain countable ring actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A recent result of Frantzikinakis establishes sufficient conditions for joint ergodicity in the setting of $\mathbb{Z}$-actions. We generalize this result for actions of second-countable locally compact abelian groups. We obtain two applications of this result. First, we show that, given an ergodic action $(T_n)_{n \in F}$ of a countable field $F$ with characteristic zero on a probability space $(X,\mathcal{B},μ)$ and a family $\{p_1,\dots,p_k\}$ of independent polynomials, we have \[ \lim_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{|Φ_N|}\sum_{n \in Φ_N} T_{p_1(n)}f_1\cdots T_{p_k(n)}f_k\ = \ \prod_{j=1}^k \int_X f_i \ dμ,\] where $f_i \in L^{\infty}(μ)$, $(Φ_N)$ is a Fø lner sequence of $(F,+)$, and the convergence takes place in $L^2(μ)$. This yields corollaries in combinatorics and topological dynamics. Second, we prove that a similar result holds for totally ergodic actions of suitable rings.

Flow modules and nowhere-zero flows
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a graph, $A$ an abelian group, $\mathcal{D}$ a given orientation of $Γ$ and $R$ a unital subring of the endomorphism ring of $A$. It is shown that the set of all maps $\varphi$ from $E(Γ)$ to $A$ such that $(\mathcal{D},\varphi)$ is an $A$-flow forms a left $R$-module. Let $Γ$ be a union of two subgraphs $Γ_{1}$ and $Γ_{2}$, and $p^n$ a prime power. It is proved that $Γ$ admits a nowhere-zero $p^n$-flow if $Γ_{1}$ and $Γ_{2}$ have at most $p^n-2$ common edges and both have nowhere-zero $p^n$-flows. More important, it is proved that $Γ$ admits a nowhere-zero $4$-flow if $Γ_{1}$ and $Γ_{2}$ both have nowhere-zero $4$-flows and their common edges induce a connected subgraph of $Γ$ of size at most $3$. This covers a result of Catlin that a graph admits a nowhere-zero $4$-flow if it is a union of a $4$-cycle and a subgraph admiting a nowhere-zero $4$-flow.

New structure on the quantum alcove model with applications to representation theory and Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The quantum alcove model associated to a dominant weight plays an important role in many branches of mathematics, such as combinatorial representation theory, the theory of Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert calculus. For a dominant weight, it is proved by Lenart-Lubovsky that the quantum alcove model does not depend on the choice of a reduced alcove path, which is a shortest path of alcoves from the fundamental one to its translation by the given dominant weight. This is established through quantum Yang-Baxter moves, which biject the objects of the model associated with two such alcove paths, and can be viewed as a generalization of jeu de taquin slides to arbitrary root systems. The purpose of this paper is to give a generalization of quantum Yang-Baxter moves to the quantum alcove model corresponding to an arbitrary weight, which was used to express a general Chevalley formula in the equivariant $K$-group of semi-infinite flag manifolds. The generalized quantum Yang-Baxter moves give rise to a "sijection" (bijection between signed sets), and are shown to preserve certain important statistics, including weights and heights. As an application, we prove that the generating function of these statistics does not depend on the choice of a reduced alcove path. Also, we obtain an identity for the graded characters of Demazure submodules of level-zero extremal weight modules over a quantum affine algebra, which can be thought of as a representation-theoretic analogue of the mentioned Chevalley formula. Other applications and some open problems involving "signed crystals" are discussed.

Fundamental weight systems are quantum states
Published in Letters in Mathematical Physics, vol 113 no 112 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Weight systems on chord diagrams play a central role in knot theory and Chern-Simons theory; and more recently in stringy quantum gravity. We highlight that the noncommutative algebra of horizontal chord diagrams is canonically a star-algebra, and ask which weight systems are positive with respect to this structure; hence we ask: Which weight systems are quantum states, if horizontal chord diagrams are quantum observables? We observe that the fundamental gl(n)-weight systems on horizontal chord diagrams with N strands may be identified with the Cayley distance kernel at inverse temperature beta=ln(n) on the symmetric group on N elements. In contrast to related kernels like the Mallows kernel, the positivity of the Cayley distance kernel had remained open. We characterize its phases of indefinite, semi-definite and definite positivity, in dependence of the inverse temperature beta; and we prove that the Cayley distance kernel is positive (semi-)definite at beta=ln(n) for all n=1,2,3,... In particular, this proves that all fundamental gl(n)-weight systems are quantum states, and hence so are all their convex combinations. We close with briefly recalling how, under our "Hypothesis H", this result impacts on the identification of bound states of multiple M5-branes.

Most rigid representation and Cayley index of finitely generated groups
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 29, Issue 4 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
If $G$ is a group and $S$ a generating set, $G$ canonically embeds into the automorphism group of its Cayley graph and it is natural to try to minimize, over all generating sets, the index of this inclusion. This infimum is called the Cayley index of the group. In a recent series of works, we have characterized the infinite finitely generated groups with Cayley index $1$. We complement this characterization by showing that the Cayley index is $2$ in the remaining cases and is attained for a finite generating set.

Tableau models for semi-infinite Bruhat order and level-zero representations of quantum affine algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that semi-infinite Bruhat order on an affine Weyl group is completely determined from those on the quotients by affine Weyl subgroups associated with various maximal (standard) parabolic subgroups of finite type. Furthermore, for an affine Weyl group of classical type, we give a complete classification of all cover relations of semi-infinite Bruhat order (or equivalently, all edges of the quantum Bruhat graphs) on the quotients in terms of tableaux. Combining these we obtain a tableau criterion for semi-infinite Bruhat order on an affine Weyl group of classical type. As an application, we give new tableau models for the crystal bases of a level-zero fundamental representation and a level-zero extremal weight module over a quantum affine algebra of classical untwisted type, which we call quantum Kashiwara-Nakashima columns and semi-infinite Kashiwara-Nakashima tableaux. We give an explicit description of the crystal isomorphisms among three different realizations of the crystal basis of a level-zero fundamental representation by quantum Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths, quantum Kashiwara-Nakashima columns, and (ordinary) Kashiwara-Nakashima columns.

Almost Envy-Freeness for Groups: Improved Bounds via Discrepancy Theory
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, 930:179-195 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the allocation of indivisible goods among groups of agents using well-known fairness notions such as envy-freeness and proportionality. While these notions cannot always be satisfied, we provide several bounds on the optimal relaxations that can be guaranteed. For instance, our bounds imply that when the number of groups is constant and the $n$ agents are divided into groups arbitrarily, there exists an allocation that is envy-free up to $Θ(\sqrt{n})$ goods, and this bound is tight. Moreover, we show that while such an allocation can be found efficiently, it is NP-hard to compute an allocation that is envy-free up to $o(\sqrt{n})$ goods even when a fully envy-free allocation exists. Our proofs make extensive use of tools from discrepancy theory.

Categorifications of rational Hilbert series and characters of $FS^{op}$ modules
Published in Alg. Number Th. 16 (2022) 2433-2491 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a method for associating a chain complex to a module over a combinatorial category, such that if the complex is exact then the module has a rational Hilbert series. We prove homology--vanishing theorems for these complexes for several combinatorial categories including: the category of finite sets and injections, the opposite of the category of finite sets and surjections, and the category of finite dimensional vector spaces over a finite field and injections. Our main applications are to modules over the opposite of the category of finite sets and surjections, known as $FS^{op}$ modules. We obtain many constraints on the sequence of symmetric group representations underlying a finitely generated $FS^{op}$ module. In particular, we describe its character in terms of functions that we call character exponentials. Our results have new consequences for the character of the homology of the moduli space of stable marked curves, and for the equivariant Kazhdan-Luzstig polynomial of the braid matroid.

Flip Signatures
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $D_{\infty}$-topological Markov chain is a topological Markov chain provided with an action of the infinite dihedral group $D_{\infty}$. It is defined by two zero-one square matrices $A$ and $J$ satisfying $AJ=JA^{\textsf{T}}$ and $J^2=I$. Flip signature is obtained from symmetric bilinear forms with respect to $J$ on the eventual kernel of $A$. We modify Williams' decomposition theorem to prove flip signature is a $D_{\infty}$-conjugacy invariant. We introduce natural $D_{\infty}$-actions on Ashley's eight-by-eight and the full two-shift. The Flip signatures show that Ashley's eight-by-eight and the full two-shift equipped with the natural $D_{\infty}$-actions are not $D_{\infty}$-conjugate. We also discuss the notion of $D_{\infty}$-shift equivalence and the Lind zeta function.

Modular plethystic isomorphisms for two-dimensional linear groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $E$ be the natural representation of the special linear group $\mathrm{SL}_2(K)$ over an arbitrary field $K$. We use the two dual constructions of the symmetric power when $K$ has prime characteristic to construct an explicit isomorphism $\mathrm{Sym}_m \mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \mathrm{Sym}_\ell \mathrm{Sym}^m E$. This generalises Hermite reciprocity to arbitrary fields. We prove a similar explicit generalisation of the classical Wronskian isomorphism, namely $\mathrm{Sym}_m \mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \bigwedge^m \mathrm{Sym}^{\ell+m-1} E$. We also generalise a result first proved by King, by showing that if $\nabla^λ$ is the Schur functor for the partition $λ$ and $λ^\circ$ is the complement of $λ$ in a rectangle with $\ell+1$ rows, then $\nabla^λ\mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \nabla^{λ^\circ} \mathrm{Sym}_\ell E$. To illustrate that the existence of such `plethystic isomorphisms' is far from obvious, we end by proving that the generalisation $\nabla^λ\mathrm{Sym}^\ell E \cong \nabla^{λ'} \mathrm{Sym}^{\ell + \ell(λ') - \ell(λ)}E$ of the Wronskian isomorphism, known to hold for a large class of partitions over the complex field, does not generalise to fields of prime characteristic, even after considering all possible dualities.
