Finite Gelfand Pair Approaches for Ehrenfest Diffusion Model
A classical diffusion model of Ehrenfest which consists of $2$-urns and $n$-balls is realized by a finite Gelfand pair $(H_{n},S_{n})$, where $H_{n}$ is the hyperoctahedral group and $S_{n}$ is the symmetric group. This fact can be generalized to multi-urn version by using Gelfand pairs of complex reflection groups.

Primitive ideals in quantum Schubert cells: dimension of the strata
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to study the representation theory of quantum Schubert cells. Let $\g$ be a simple complex Lie algebra. To each element $w$ of the Weyl group $W$ of $\g$, De Concini, Kac and Procesi have attached a subalgebra $U_q[w]$ of the quantised enveloping algebra $U_q(\g)$. Recently, Yakimov showed that these algebras can be interpreted as the quantum Schubert cells on quantum flag manifolds. In this paper, we study the primitive ideals of $U_q[w]$. More precisely, it follows from the Stratification Theorem of Goodearl and Letzter that the primitive spectrum of $U_q[w]$ admits a stratification indexed by those primes that are invariant under a natural torus action. Moreover each stratum is homeomorphic to the spectrum of maximal ideals of a torus. The main result of this paper gives an explicit formula for the dimension of the stratum associated to a given torus-invariant prime.

On a Generalization of the Flag Complex Conjecture of Charney and Davis
The Flag Complex Conjecture of Charney and Davis states that for a simplicial complex $S$ which triangulates a $(2n - 1)$-generalized homology sphere as a flag complex one has $(-1)^n \sum_{σ\in S} \left(\frac{-1}{2}\right)^{\dimσ+ 1} \ge 0$, where the sum runs over all simplices $σ$ of $S$ (including the empty simplex). Interpreting the $1$-skeleta of $σ\in S$ as graphs of Coxeter groups, we present a stronger version of this conjecture, and prove the equivalence of the latter to the Flag Complex Conjecture.

Basic and degenerate pregeometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study pairs $(Γ,G)$, where $Γ$ is a 'Buekenhout-Tits' pregeometry with all rank 2 truncations connected, and $G\leqslant\mathrm{Aut} Γ$ is transitive on the set of elements of each type. The family of such pairs is closed under forming quotients with respect to $G$-invariant type-refining partitions of the element set of $Γ$. We identify the 'basic' pairs (those that admit no non-degenerate quotients), and show, by studying quotients and direct decompositions, that the study of basic pregeometries reduces to examining those where the group $G$ is faithful and primitive on the set of elements of each type. We also study the special case of normal quotients, where we take quotients with respect to the orbits of a normal subgroup of $G$. There is a similar reduction for normal-basic pregeometries to those where $G$ is faithful and quasiprimitive on the set of elements of each type.

Growth in solvable subgroups of GL_r(Z/pZ)
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K=Z/pZ$ and let $A$ be a subset of $\GL_r(K)$ such that $<A>$ is solvable. We reduce the study of the growth of $A$ under the group operation to the nilpotent setting. Specifically we prove that either $A$ grows rapidly (meaning $|A\cdot A\cdot A|\gg |A|^{1+δ}$), or else there are groups $U_R$ and $S$, with $S/U_R$ nilpotent such that $A_k\cap S$ is large and $U_R\subseteq A_k$, where $k$ is a bounded integer and $A_k = \{x_1 x_2...b x_k : x_i \in A \cup A^{-1} \cup {1}}$. The implied constants depend only on the rank $r$ of $\GL_r(K)$. When combined with recent work by Pyber and Szabó, the main result of this paper implies that it is possible to draw the same conclusions without supposing that $<A>$ is solvable.

Pattern characterization of rationally smooth affine Schubert varieties of type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
Schubert varieties in finite dimensional flag manifolds G/P are a well-studied family of projective varieties indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group W. In particular, there are many tests for smoothness and rational smoothness of these varieties. One key result due to Lakshmibai-Sandhya is that in type A the smooth Schubert varieties are precisely those that are indexed by permutations that avoid the patterns 4231 and 3412. Recently, there has been a flurry of research related to the infinite dimensional analogs of flag manifolds corresponding with G being a Kac-Moody group and W being an affine Weyl group or parabolic quotient. In this paper we study the case when W is the affine Weyl group of type A or the affine permutations. We develop the notion of pattern avoidance for affine permutations. Our main result is a characterization of the rationally smooth Schubert varieties corresponding to affine permutations in terms of the patterns 4231 and 3412 and the twisted spiral permutations.

A Note on the Hodge Structure of the Intersection of Coloring Complexes
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices. The coloring complex $Δ(G)$ was defined by Steingrímsson, and the homology of $Δ(G)$ was shown to be nonzero only in dimension $n-3$ by Jonsson. Hanlon recently showed that the Eulerian idempotents provide a decomposition of the homology group $H_{n-3}(Δ(G))$ where the dimension of the $j^{th}$ component in the decomposition, $H_{n-3}^{(j)}(Δ(G))$, equals the absolute value of the coefficient of $λ^{j}$ in the chromatic polynomial of $G$, $χ_{G}(λ)$. Jonsson recently studied the topology of intersections of coloring complexes. In this note, we show that the coefficient of the ${j}^{th}$ term in the chromatic polynomial of the intersection of coloring complexes gives the Euler Characteristic of the $j^{th}$ Hodge subcomplex of the Hodge decomposition of the intersection of coloring complexes.

Spectral sequences of colored Jones polynomials, colored Rasmussen invariants and nanophrases
We introduce three spectral sequences which give some expressions of colored Jones polynomials. Each spectral sequence contains a Khovanov-type homology groups. Two of them are derived from a bicomplex of the colored Jones polynomial. The other is the spectral sequence that deduces a colored Rasmussen invariant of links. We also introduce three functors between categories of nanophrases, generalizations of links, and obtain their applications using colored Jones polynomials and their categorifications.

The Orbifold Topological Vertex
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau orbifolds and we develop a topological vertex formalism for computing them. The basic combinatorial object is the orbifold vertex, a generating function for the number of 3D partitions asymptotic to three given 2D partitions and colored by representations of a finite Abelian group G acting on C^3. In the case where G=Z_n acting on C^3 with transverse A_{n-1} quotient singularities, we give an explicit formula for the vertex in terms of Schur functions. We discuss applications of our formalism to the Donaldson-Thomas Crepant Resolution Conjecture and to the orbifold Donaldson-Thomas/Gromov-Witten correspondence. We also explicitly compute the Donaldson-Thomas partition function for some simple orbifold geometries: the local football and the local BZ_2 gerbe.

Wada Dessins associated with Finite Projective Spaces and Frobenius Compatibility
Published • View PublicationBIB
\textit{Dessins d'enfants} (hypermaps) are useful to describe algebraic properties of the Riemann surfaces they are embedded in. In general, it is not easy to describe algebraic properties of the surface of the embedding starting from the combinatorial properties of an embedded dessin. However, this task becomes easier if the dessin has a large automorphism group. In this paper we consider a special type of dessins, so-called \textit{Wada dessins}. Their underlying graph illustrates the incidence structure of finite projective spaces $\PR{m}{n}$. Usually, the automorphism group of these dessins is a cyclic \textit{Singer group} $Σ_\ell$ permuting transitively the vertices. However, in some cases, a second group of automorphisms $Φ_f$ exists. It is a cyclic group generated by the \textit{Frobenius automorphism}. We show under what conditions $Φ_f$ is a group of automorphisms acting freely on the edges of the considered dessins.

Asymptotics of the maximal and the typical dimensions of isotypic components of tensor representations of the symmetric group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Vershik and Kerov gave asymptotical bounds for the maximal and the typical dimensions of irreducible representations of symmetric groups $S_n$. It was conjectured by G. Olshanski that the maximal and the typical dimensions of the isotypic components of tensor representations of the symmetric group admit similar asymptotical bounds. The main result of this article is the proof of this conjecture. Consider the natural representation of $S_n$ on $(\mathbb{C}^N)^{\otimes n}$. Its isotypic components are parametrized by Young diagrams with $n$ cells and at most $N$ rows. P. Biane found the limit shape of Young diagrams when $n\rightarrow\infty,\ \sqrt{n}/N\rightarrow c$. By showing that this limit shape is the unique solution to a variational problem, it is proven here, that after scaling, the maximal and the typical dimensions of isotypic components lie between positive constants. A new proof of Biane's limit-shape theorem is obtained.

On the dimension growth of groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Dimension growth functions of groups have been introduced by Gromov in 1999. We prove that every solvable finitely generated subgroups of the R. Thompson group $F$ has polynomial dimension growth while the group $F$ itself, and some solvable groups of class 3 have exponential dimension growth with exponential control. We describe connections between dimension growth, expansion properties of finite graphs and the Ramsey theory.

Factorizations of cycles and multi-noded rooted trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study factorizations of cycles. The main result is that under certain condition, the number of ways to factor a $d$-cycle into a product of cycles of prescribed lengths is $d^{r-2}.$ To prove our result, we first define a new class of combinatorial objects, multi-noded rooted trees, which generalize rooted trees. We find the cardinality of this new class which with proper parameters is exactly $d^{r-2}.$ The main part of this paper is the proof that there is a bijection from factorizations of a $d$-cycle to multi-noded rooted trees via factorization graphs. This implies the desired formula. The factorization problem we consider has its origin in geometry, and is related to the study of a special family of Hurwitz numbers: pure-cycle Hurwitz numbers. Via the standard translation of Hurwitz numbers into group theory, our main result is equivalent to the following: when the genus is $0$ and one of the ramification indices is $d,$ the degree of the covers, the pure-cycle Hurwitz number is $d^{r-3},$ where $r$ is the number of branch points.

The critical group of $K_m\vee P_n$ and $P_m\vee P_n$
Let $G_1\sq G_2$ denote the graph obtained from $G_1+G_2$ by adding new edges from each vertex of $G_1$ to every vertex of $G_2$. In this paper, the critical groups of the graphs $K_m\sq P_n$$(n\geq4)$ and $P_m\sq P_n$$(m\geq4,n\geq5)$ are determined.

Small covers and the equivariant bordism classification of 2-torus manifolds
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Vol. 2014, No. 24, pp. 6756--6797 • View PublicationBIB
Associated with the Davis-Januszkiewicz theory of small covers, this paper deals with the theory of 2-torus manifolds from the viewpoint of equivariant bordism. We define a differential operator on the "dual" algebra of the unoriented $G_n$-representation algebra introduced by Conner and Floyd, where $G_n=(\Z_2)^n$. With the help of $G_n$-colored graphs (or mod 2 GKM graphs), we may use this differential operator to give a very simple description of tom Dieck-Kosniowski-Stong localization theorem in the setting of 2-torus manifolds. We then apply this to study the $G_n$-equivariant unoriented bordism classification of $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifolds. We show that the $G_n$-equivariant unoriented bordism class of each $n$-dimensional 2-torus manifold contains an $n$-dimensional small cover as its representative, solving the conjecture posed in [19]. In addition, we also obtain that the graded noncommutative ring formed by the equivariant unoriented bordism classes of 2-torus manifolds of all possible dimensions is generated by the classes of all generalized real Bott manifolds (as special small covers over the products of simplices). This gives a strong connection between the computation of $G_n$-equivariant bordism groups or ring and the Davis-Januszkiewicz theory of small covers. As a computational application, with the help of computer, we completely determine the structure of the group formed by equivariant bordism classes of all 4-dimensional 2-torus manifolds. Finally, we give some essential relationships among 2-torus manifolds, coloring polynomials, colored simple convex polytopes, colored graphs.

Haggkvist-Hell Graphs: A class of Kneser-colorable graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For positive integers n and r we define the Haggkvist-Hell graph, H_{n:r}, to be the graph whose vertices are the ordered pairs (h,T) where T is an r-subset of [n], and h is an element of [n] not in T. Vertices (h_x,T_x) and (h_y,T_y) are adjacent iff h_x \in T_y, h_y \in T_x, and T_x and T_y are disjoint. These triangle-free arc transitive graphs are an extension of the idea of Kneser graphs, and there is a natural homomorphism from the Haggkvist-Hell graph, H_{n:r}, to the corresponding Kneser graph, K_{n:r}. Haggkvist and Hell introduced the r=3 case of these graphs, showing that a cubic graph admits a homomorphism to H_{22:3} if and only if it is triangle-free. Gallucio, Hell, and Nesetril also considered the r=3 case, proving that H_{n:3} can have arbitrarily large chromatic number. In this paper we give the exact values for diameter, girth, and odd girth of all Haggkvist-Hell graphs, and we give bounds for independence, chromatic, and fractional chromatic number. Furthermore, we extend the result of Gallucio et al. to any fixed r \ge 2, and we determine the full automorphism group of H_{n:r}, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group on n elements.

Crystals and total positivity on orientable surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop a combinatorial model of networks on orientable surfaces, and study weight and homology generating functions of paths and cycles in these networks. Network transformations preserving these generating functions are investigated. We describe in terms of our model the crystal structure and R-matrix of the affine geometric crystal of products of symmetric and dual symmetric powers of type A. Local realizations of the R-matrix and crystal actions are used to construct a double affine geometric crystal on a torus, generalizing the commutation result of Kajiwara-Noumi-Yamada and an observation of Berenstein-Kazhdan. We show that our model on a cylinder gives a decomposition and parametrization of the totally nonnegative part of the rational unipotent loop group of GL_n.

Coxeter group actions on Saalschützian ${}_4F_3(1)$ series and very-well-poised ${}_7F_6(1)$ series
In this paper we consider a function $L(\vec{x})=L(a,b,c,d;e;f,g)$, which can be written as a linear combination of two Saalschützian ${}_4F_3(1)$ hypergeometric series or as a very-well-poised ${}_7F_6(1)$ hypergeometric series. We explore two-term and three-term relations satisfied by the $L$ function and put them in the framework of group theory. We prove a fundamental two-term relation satisfied by the $L$ function and show that this relation implies that the Coxeter group $W(D_5)$, which has 1920 elements, is an invariance group for $L(\vec{x})$. The invariance relations for $L(\vec{x})$ are classified into six types based on a double coset decomposition of the invariance group. The fundamental two-term relation is shown to generalize classical results about hypergeometric series. We derive Thomae's identity for ${}_3F_2(1)$ series, Bailey's identity for terminating Saalschützian ${}_4F_3(1)$ series, and Barnes' second lemma as consequences. We further explore three-term relations satisfied by $L(a,b,c,d;e;f,g)$. The group that governs the three-term relations is shown to be isomorphic to the Coxeter group $W(D_6)$, which has 23040 elements. Based on the right cosets of $W(D_5)$ in $W(D_6)$, we demonstrate the existence of 220 three-term relations satisfied by the $L$ function that fall into two families according to the notion of $L$-coherence.
