Groups of type L_2(q) acting on polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that if G is a string C-group of rank 4 and G is isomorphic to L_2(q) with q a prime power, then q must be 11 or 19. The polytopes arising are Grunbaum's 11-cell of type {3,5,3} for L_2(11) and Coxeter's 57-cell of type {5,3,5} for L_2(19), each a locally projective regular 4-polytope.

Signed words and permutations, IV; Fixed and pixed points

The flag-major index "fmaj" and the classical length function "$\ell$" are used to construct two $q$-analogs of the generating polynomial for the hyperoctahedral group~$B_n$ by number of positive and negative fixed points (resp. pixed points). Specializations of those $q$-analogs are also derived dealing with signed derangements and desarrangements, as well as several classical results that were previously proved for the symmetric group.

A conjectured combinatorial interpretation of the normalized irreducible character values of the symmetric group
In math.CO/0109093 the author obtained a formula for the value of an irreducible symmetric group character indexed by a partition of rectangular shape. In the present paper this formula is (conjecturally) generalized to arbitrary shapes.

The mean Dehn function of abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
While Dehn functions, D(n), of finitely presented groups are very well studied in the literature, mean Dehn functions are much less considered. M. Gromov introduced the notion of mean Dehn function of a group, $D_{mean}(n)$, suggesting that in many cases it should grow much more slowly than the Dehn function itself. Using only elementary counting methods, this paper presents some computations pointing into this direction. Particularizing them to the case of any finite presentation of a finitely generated abelian group (for which it is well known that $D(n)\sim n^2$ except in the 1-dimensional case), we show that the three variations $D_{osmean}(n)$, $D_{smean}(n)$ and $D_{mean}(n)$ all are bounded above by $Kn(\ln n)^2$, where the constant $K$ depends only on the presentation (and the geodesic combing) chosen. This improves an earlier bound given by Kukina and Roman'kov.

Nilpotent Singer Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $N$ be a nilpotent group normal in a group $G$. Suppose that $G$ acts transitively upon the points of a finite non-Desarguesian projective plane $\mathcal{P}$. We prove that, if $\mathcal{P}$ has square order, then $N$ must act semi-regularly on $\mathcal{P}$. In addition we prove that if a finite non-Desarguesian projective plane $\mathcal{P}$ admits more than one nilpotent group which is regular on the points of $\mathcal{P}$ then $\mathcal{P}$ has non-square order and the automorphism group of $\mathcal{P}$ has odd order.

Quadratic transformations of Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
When one expands a Schur function in terms of the irreducible characters of the symplectic (or orthogonal) group, the coefficient of the trivial character is 0 unless the indexing partition has an appropriate form. A number of q-analogues of this fact were conjectured in math.QA/0112035; the present paper proves most of those conjectures, as well as some new identities suggested by the proof technique. The proof involves showing that a nonsymmetric version of the relevant integral is annihilated by a suitable ideal of the affine Hecke algebra, and that any such annihilated functional satisfies the desired vanishing property. This does not, however, give rise to vanishing identities for the standard nonsymmetric Macdonald and Koornwinder polynomials; we discuss the required modification to these polynomials to support such results.

Cambrian fans
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite Coxeter group W and a Coxeter element c of W, the c-Cambrian fan is a coarsening of the fan defined by the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Its maximal cones are naturally indexed by the c-sortable elements of W. The main result of this paper is that the known bijection cl_c between c-sortable elements and c-clusters induces a combinatorial isomorphism of fans. In particular, the c-Cambrian fan is combinatorially isomorphic to the normal fan of the generalized associahedron for W. The rays of the c-Cambrian fan are generated by certain vectors in the W-orbit of the fundamental weights, while the rays of the c-cluster fan are generated by certain roots. For particular ("bipartite") choices of c, we show that the c-Cambrian fan is linearly isomorphic to the c-cluster fan. We characterize, in terms of the combinatorics of clusters, the partial order induced, via the map cl_c, on c-clusters by the c-Cambrian lattice. We give a simple bijection from c-clusters to c-noncrossing partitions that respects the refined (Narayana) enumeration. We relate the Cambrian fan to well known objects in the theory of cluster algebras, providing a geometric context for g-vectors and quasi-Cartan companions.

Meanders in a Cayley graph
A meander of order n is a simple closed curve in the plane which intersects a horizontal line transversely at 2n points. (Meanders which differ by an isotopy of the line and plane are considered equivalent.) Let Gamma_n be the Cayley graph of the symmetric group S_n as generated by all (n choose 2) transpositions. Let Lambda_n be any interval of maximal length in Gamma_n; this graph is the Hasse diagram of the lattice of noncrossing partitions. The meanders of order n are in one-to-one correspondence with ordered pairs of maximally separated vertices of Lambda_n.

Integration over quantum permutation groups

We find a combinatorial formula for the Haar measure of quantum permutation groups. This leads to a dynamic formula for laws of diagonal coefficients, explaining the Poisson/free Poisson convergence result for characters.

Faces of generalized cluster complexes and noncrossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Φ$ be an finite root system with corresponding reflection group $W$ and let $m$ be a nonnegative integer. We consider the generalized cluster complex $Δ^m(Φ)$ defined by S. Fomin and N. Reading and the poset $NC_{(m)}(W)$ of $m$-divisible noncrossing partitions defined by D. Armstrong. We give a characterization of the faces of $Δ^m(Φ)$ in terms of $NC_{(m)}(W)$, generalizing that of T. Brady and C. Watt given in the case $m=1$. Making use of this, we give a case free proof of a conjecture of F. Chapoton and D. Armstrong, which relates a certain refined face count of $Δ^m(Φ)$ with the Möbius function of $NC_{(m)}(W)$.

Parallelepipeds, Nilpotent Groups, and Gowers Norms
Published • View PublicationBIB
In his proof of Szemeredi's Theorem, Gowers introduced certain norms that are defined on a parallelepiped structure. A natural question is on which sets a parallelepiped structure (and thus a Gowers norm) can be defined. We focus on dimensions 2 and 3 and show when this possible, and describe a correspondence between the parallelepiped structures nilpotent groups.

Full heaps and representations of affine Kac--Moody algebras
We give a combinatorial construction, not involving a presentation, of almost all untwisted affine Kac--Moody algebras modulo their one-dimensional centres in terms of signed raising and lowering operators on a certain distributive lattice ${\Cal B}$. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is constructed combinatorially as a set of ideals of a ``full heap'' over the Dynkin diagram, which leads to a kind of categorification of the positive roots for the Kac--Moody algebra. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is also a crystal in the sense of Kashiwara, and its span affords representations of the associated quantum affine algebra and affine Weyl group. There are analogues of these results for two infinite families of twisted affine Kac--Moody algebras, which we hope to treat more fully elsewhere. By restriction, we obtain combinatorial constructions of the finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over $\complex$, except those of types $E_8$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. The Chevalley basis corresponding to an arbitrary orientation of the Dynkin diagram is then represented explicitly by raising and lowering operators. We also obtain combinatorial constructions of the spin modules for Lie algebras of types $B$ and $D$, which avoid Clifford algebras, and in which the action of Chevalley bases on the canonical bases of the modules may be explicitly calculated.

On Factorisations of Matrices and Abelian Groups
We establish correspondances between factorisations of finite abelian groups (direct factors, unitary factors, non isomorphic subgroup classes) and factorisations of integer matrices. We then study counting functions associated to these factorisations and find average orders.

On the enumeration of positive cells in generalized cluster complexes and Catalan hyperplane arrangements
Published in J. Algebr. Comb. (2006) 23, 355-375 • View PublicationBIB
Let $Φ$ be an irreducible crystallographic root system with Weyl group $W$ and coroot lattice $\check{Q}$, spanning a Euclidean space $V$. Let $m$ be a positive integer and $\aA^m_Φ$ be the arrangement of hyperplanes in $V$ of the form $(α, x) = k$ for $α\in Φ$ and $k = 0, 1,...,m$. It is known that the number $N^+ (Φ, m)$ of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$ is equal to the number of facets of the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of the generalized cluster complex associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by S. Fomin and N. Reading. We define a statistic on the set of bounded dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$ and conjecture that the corresponding refinement of $N^+ (Φ, m)$ coincides with the $h$-vector of $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$. We compute these refined numbers for the classical root systems as well as for all root systems when $m=1$ and verify the conjecture when $Φ$ has type $A$, $B$ or $C$ and when $m=1$. We give several combinatorial interpretations to these numbers in terms of chains of order ideals in the root poset of $Φ$, orbits of the action of $W$ on the quotient $\check{Q} / (mh-1) \check{Q}$ and coroot lattice points inside a certain simplex, analogous to the ones given by the first author in the case of the set of all dominant regions of $\aA^m_Φ$. We also provide a dual interpretation in terms of order filters in the root poset of $Φ$ in the special case $m=1$.

Multiplication of polynomials on Hermitian symmetric spaces and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let K be a complex reductive algebraic group and V a representation of K. Let S denote the ring of polynomials on V. Assume that the action of K on S is multiplicity free. If V_λ is an irreducible representation of K, let S_λ denote the corresponding isotypic component of S. Write S_λ S_μ for the subspace of S spanned by products of S_λ and S_μ. If V_ν occurs as an irreducible constituent of the tensor product of V_λ and V_μ, is it true that S_ν is contained in S_λ S_μ? We investigate this question for representations arising in the context of Hermitian symmetric pairs. We show that the answer is yes in some cases and, using an earlier result of Ruitenburg, that in the remaining classical cases, the answer is yes provided that a conjecture of Stanley on the multiplication of Jack polynomials is true. We also show how the conjecture connects multiplication in the ring S to the usual Littlewood-Richardson rule.

Generic section of a hyperplane arrangement and twisted Hurewicz maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a twisted version of the Hurewicz map on the complement of a hyperplane arrangement. The purpose of this paper is to prove surjectivity of the twisted Hurewicz map under some genericity conditions. As a corollary, we also prove that a generic section of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement has non-trivial homotopy groups.
Constructing all irreducible Specht modules in a block of the symmetric group
For any prime p, we construct, and simultaneously count, all of the complex Specht modules in a given p-block of the symmetric group which remain irreducible when reduced modulo p. We call the Specht modules with this property p-irreducible modules. Recently Fayers has proven a conjecture of James and Mathas that provides a characterization of the partitions that correspond to the p-irreducible modules. In this paper we present a method for decomposing the partitions corresponding to p-irreducible modules, and we use this decomposition to construct and count all of the partitions corresponding to p-irreducible Specht modules in a given block.

Topology of random clique complexes
Published in Discrete Math. 309 (2009), no. 6, 1658--1671 • View PublicationBIB
In a seminal paper, Erdos and Renyi identified the threshold for connectivity of the random graph G(n,p). In particular, they showed that if p >> log(n)/n then G(n,p) is almost always connected, and if p << log(n)/n then G(n,p) is almost always disconnected, as n goes to infinity. The clique complex X(H) of a graph H is the simplicial complex with all complete subgraphs of H as its faces. In contrast to the zeroth homology group of X(H), which measures the number of connected components of H, the higher dimensional homology groups of X(H) do not correspond to monotone graph properties. There are nevertheless higher dimensional analogues of the Erdos-Renyi Theorem. We study here the higher homology groups of X(G(n,p)). For k > 0 we show the following. If p = n^alpha, with alpha < -1/k or alpha > - 1/(2k+1), then the kth homology group of X(G(n,p)) is almost always vanishing, and if -1/k < alpha < -1/(k+1), then it is almost always nonvanishing. We also give estimates for the expected rank of homology, and exhibit explicit nontrivial classes in the nonvanishing regime. These estimates suggest that almost all d-dimensional clique complexes have only one nonvanishing dimension of homology, and we cannot rule out the possibility that they are homotopy equivalent to wedges of spheres.

Generalized symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that over an infinite field the ring of symmetric functions in a finite number of variables is isomorphic to the one of polynomial functions on matrices that are invariants by the action of conjugation by general linear group. We generalize this result showing that the abelianization of the algebra of the symmetric tensors of fixed order over a free associative algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of the polynomials invariants of several matrices over an infinite field or the integers. While proving the main result we find generators and relations of abelianized divided powers of an algebra over any commutative ring.
