The Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii algorithm is a sorting algorithm for Young tableaux of a fixed shape that was originally devised to give a bijective proof of the hook-length formula. We obtain new asymptotic results on the average case and worst case complexity of this algorithm as the underlying shape tends to a fixed limit curve. Furthermore, using the summation package Sigma we prove an exact formula for the average case complexity when the underlying shape consists of only two rows. We thereby answer questions posed by Krattenthaler and Müller.

We prove a Macdonald polynomial analogue of the celebrated Nekrasov-Okounkov hook-length formula from the theory of random partitions. As an application we obtain a proof of one of the main conjectures of Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas from their work on mixed Hodge polynomials of the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on Riemann surfaces.

The celebrated hook-length formula gives a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a straight shape. In 2014, Naruse announced a more general formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shapes as a positive sum over excited diagrams of products of hook-lengths. We give an algebraic and a combinatorial proof of Naruse's formula, by using factorial Schur functions and a generalization of the Hillman--Grassl correspondence, respectively.
The main new results are two different $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula: for the skew Schur functions, and for counting reverse plane partitions of skew shapes. We establish explicit bijections between these objects and families of integer arrays with certain nonzero entries, which also proves the second formula.

In this paper, we present a direct bijective proof of the hook-length formula for standard immaculate tableaux, which arose in the study of non-commutative symmetric functions. Our proof is along the spirit of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii's combinatorial proof of the hook-length formula for standard Young tableaux.
The asymptotic number of $12..d$-Avoiding Words with $r$ occurrences of each letter $1,2, ..., n$
Following Ekhad and Zeilberger (The Personal Journal of Shalosh B. Ekhad and Doron Zeilberger, Dec 5 2014; see also arXiv:1412.2035), we study the asymptotics for large $n$ of the number $A_{d,r}(n)$ of words of length $rn$ having $r$ letters $i$ for $i=1..n$, and having no increasing subsequence of length $d$. We prove an asymptotic formula conjectured by these authors, and we give explicitly the multiplicative constant appearing in the result, answering a question they asked. These two results should make the OEIS richer by 100+25=125 dollars.
In the case $r=1$ we recover Regev's result for permutations. Our proof goes as follows: expressing $A_{d,r}(n)$ as a sum over tableaux via the RSK correspondence, we show that the only tableaux contributing to the sum are "almost" rectangular (in the scale $\sqrt{n}$). This relies on asymptotic estimates for the Kotska numbers $K_{λ,r^n}$ when $λ$ has a fixed number of parts. Contrarily to the case $r=1$ where these numbers are given by the hook-length formula, we don't have closed form expressions here, so to get our asymptotic estimates we rely on more delicate computations, via the Jacobi-Trudi identity and saddle-point estimates.

In this work we introduce and study various generalizations of the notion of increasingly labelled trees, where the label of a child node is always larger than the label of its parent node, to multilabelled tree families, where the nodes in the tree can get multiple labels. For all tree classes we show characterizations of suitable generating functions for the tree enumeration sequence via differential equations. Furthermore, for several combinatorial classes of multilabelled increasing tree families we present explicit enumeration results. We also present multilabelled increasing tree families of an elliptic nature, where the exponential generating function can be expressed in terms of the Weierstrass-p function or the lemniscate sine function. Furthermore, we show how to translate enumeration formulas for multilabelled increasing trees into hook-length formulas for trees and present a general "reverse engineering" method to discover hook-length formulas associated to such tree families.

The number of standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape is famously given by the hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. A bijective proof of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii relies on a sorting algorithm akin to jeu-de-taquin which transforms an arbitrary filling of a partition into a standard Young tableau by exchanging adjacent entries. Recently, Krattenthaler and Müller defined the complexity of this algorithm as the average number of performed exchanges, and Neumann and the author proved it fulfils some nice symmetry properties. In this paper we recall and extend the previous results and provide new bijective proofs.
Playing jeu de taquin on d-complete posets
Using a modified version of jeu de taquin, Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii gave a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for counting standard Young tableaux of fixed shape. In this paper we consider a natural extension of jeu de taquin to arbitrary posets. Given a poset P, jeu de taquin defines a map from the set of bijective labelings of the poset elements with $\{1,2,...,|P|\}$ to the set of linear extensions of the poset. One question of particular interest is for which posets this map yields each linear extension equally often. We analyze the double-tailed diamond poset $D_{m,n}$ and show that uniform distribution is obtained if and only if $D_{m,n}$ is d-complete. Furthermore, we observe that the extended hook-length formula for counting linear extensions on d-complete posets provides a combinatorial answer to a seemingly unrelated question, namely: Given a uniformly random standard Young tableau of fixed shape, what is the expected value of the left-most entry in the second row?
On the enumeration of three-rowed standard Young tableaux of skew shape in terms of Motzkin numbers
The enumeration of standard Young tableaux (SYTs) of shape λ can be easily computed by the hook-length formula. In 1981, Amitai Regev proved that the number of SYTs having at most three rows with n entries equals the nth Motzkin number M_n. In 2006, Regev conjectured that the total number of SYTs of skew shape λ/(2, 1) over all partitions λ having at most three parts with n entries is the difference of two Motzkin numbers, M_{n-1} - M_{n-3}. Ekhad and Zeilberger proved Regev's conjecture using a computer program. In 2009, S.-P. Eu found a bijection between Motzkin paths and SYTs of skew shape with at most three rows to prove Regev's conjecture, and Eu also indirectly showed that for the fixed μ = (μ1,μ2) the number of SYTs of skew shape λ/μ over all partitions λ having at most three parts can be expressed as a linear combination of the Motzkin numbers. In this paper, we will find an explicit formula for the generating function for the general case: for each partition μ having at most three parts the generating function gives a formula for the coefficients of the linear combination of Motzkin numbers. We will also show that these generating functions are unexpectedly related to the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind.

Recently, a new weighted generalization of the branching rule for the hook lengths, equivalent to the hook formula, was proved. In this paper, we generalize the complementary branching rule, which can be used to prove Burnside's formula. We present three different proofs: bijective, via weighted hook walks, and via the ordinary weighted branching rule.

Consider the affine Hecke algebra $H_l$ corresponding to the group $GL_l$ over a $p$-adic field with the residue field of cardinality $q$. Regard $H_l$ as an associative algebra over the field $C(q)$. Consider the $H_{l+m}$-module $W$ induced from the tensor product of the evaluation modules over the algebras $H_l$ and $H_m$. The module $W$ depends on two partitions $λ$ of $l$ and $μ$ of $m$, and on two non-zero elements of the field $C(q)$. There is a canonical operator $J$ acting on $W$, it corresponds to the trigonometric $R$-matrix. The algebra $H_{l+m}$ contains the finite dimensional Hecke algebra of rank $l+m$ as a subalgebra, and the operator $J$ commutes with the action of this subalgebra on $W$. Under this action, $W$ decomposes into irreducible subspaces according to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We compute the eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to certain multiplicity-free irreducible components of $W$. In particular, we give a formula for the ratio of two eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to the ``highest'' and the ``lowest'' components. As an application, we derive the well known $q$-analogue of the hook-length formula for the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$.
A bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux
We present a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux of a fixed shape based on a modified jeu de taquin and the ideas of the bijective proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary standard tableaux by Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii. In their proof Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a bijection between arbitrary fillings of the Ferrers diagram with the integers $1,2,...,n$ and pairs of standard tableaux and hook tabloids. In our shifted version of their algorithm the map from the set of arbitrary fillings of the shifted Ferrers diagram onto the set of shifted standard tableaux is analog to the construction of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii, however, unlike to their algorithm, we are forced to use the 'rowwise' total order of the cells in the shifted Ferrers diagram rather than the 'columnwise' total order as the underlying order in the algorithm. Unfortunately the construction of the shifted hook tabloid is more complicated in the shifted case. As a side-result we obtain a simple random algorithm for generating shifted standard tableaux of a given shape, which produces every such tableau equally likely.

For their bijective proof of the hook-length formula for the number of standard tableaux of a fixed shape Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a modified jeu de taquin which transforms an arbitrary filling of the Ferrers diagram with $1,2,...,n$ (tabloid) into a standard tableau. Their definition relies on a total order of the cells in the Ferrers diagram induced by a special standard tableau, however, this definition also makes sense for the total order induced by any other standard tableau. Given two standard tableaux $P,Q$ of the same shape we show that the number of tabloids which result in $P$ if we perform modified jeu de taquin with respect to the total order induced by $Q$ is equal to the number of tabloids which result in $Q$ if we perform modified jeu de taquin with respect to $P$. This symmetry theorem extends to skew shapes and shifted skew shapes.

Take the degenerate affine Hecke algebra $H_{l+m}$ corresponding to the group $GL_{l+m}$ over a $p$-adic field. Consider the $H_{l+m}$-module $W$ induced from the tensor product of the evaluation modules over the algebras $H_l$ and $H_m$. The module $W$ depends on two partitions $λ$ of $l$ and $μ$ of $m$, and on two complex numbers $z$ and $w$. There is a canonical operator $J$ acting in $W$, it corresponds to the rational Yang $R$-matrix.
The algebra $H_{l+m}$ contains the symmetric group $S_{l+m}$, and $J$ commutes with the action of $S_{l+m}$ in $W$. Under this action, $W$ decomposes into irreducible subspaces according to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. We compute the eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to certain multiplicity-free irreducible components of $W$. In particular, we obtain a nice formula for the ratio of two eigenvalues of $J$, corresponding to the "highest" and "lowest" (multiplicity-free) irreducible components of $W$.
