We present a new matrix inverse with applications in the theory of bilateral basic hypergeometric series. Our matrix inversion result is directly extracted from an instance of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation theorem, and involves two infinite matrices which are not lower-triangular. We combine our bilateral matrix inverse with known basic hypergeometric summation theorems to derive, via inverse relations, several new identities for bilateral basic hypergeometric series.

We derive exact and asymptotic results for the number of star and watermelon configurations of vicious walkers confined to lie between two impenetrable walls, as well as for the analogous problem for $\infty$-friendly walkers. Our proofs make use of results from symmetric function theory and the theory of basic hypergeometric series.
Extended Bell and Stirling numbers from hypergeometric exponentiation
Exponentiating the hypergeometric series gives a recursion relation for integer sequences which are generalizations of conventional Bell numbers. The corresponding associated Stirling numbers of the second kind are also generated and investigated. For the lowest order generalisation, one can give a combinatorial interpretation of these 'Bell' numbers, and of some Stirling numbers associated with them. We also consider these analogues of Bell numbers in the case of restricted partitions.
Random Young Tableaux and Combinatorial Identities

We derive new combinatorial identities which may be viewed as multivariate analogs of summation formulas for hypergeometric series. As in the previous paper [Re], we start with probability distributions on the space of the infinite Young tableaux. Then we calculate the probability that the entry of a random tableau at a given box equals n=1,2,.... Summing these probabilities over n and equating the result to 1 we get a nontrivial identity. Our choice for the initial distributions is motivated by the recent work on harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group and related topics.

We give an r-dimensional generalization of H. S. Shukla's very-well-poised 8-psi-8 summation formula. We work in the setting of multiple basic hypergeometric series very-well-poised over the root system A_{r-1}, or equivalently, the unitary group U(r). Our proof, which is already new in the one-dimensional case, utilizes an A_{r-1} nonterminating very-well-poised 6-phi-5 summation by S. C. Milne, a partial fraction decomposition, and analytic continuation.
Multilateral transformations of q-series with quotients of parameters that are nonnegative integer powers of q

We give multidimensional generalizations of several transformation formulae for basic hypergeometric series of a specific type. Most of the upper parameters of the series differ multiplicatively from corresponding lower parameters by a nonnegative integer power of the base q. In one dimension, formulae for such series have been found, in the q -> 1 case, by B. M. Minton and P. W. Karlsson, and in the basic case by G. Gasper, by W. C. Chu, and more recently by the author. Our identities involve multilateral basic hypergeometric series associated to the root system A_r (or equivalently, the unitary group U(r+1)).

We give elementary derivations of several classical and some new summation and transformation formulae for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. For purpose of motivation, we review our previous simple proof ("A simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation", Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear) of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Using a similar but different method, we now give elementary derivations of some transformations for bilateral basic hypergeometric series. In particular, these include M. Jackson's very-well-poised 8-psi-8 transformation, a very-well-poised 10-psi-10 transformation, by induction, Slater's general transformation for very-well-poised 2r-psi-2r series, and Slater's transformation for general r-psi-r series. Finally, we derive some new transformations for bilateral basic hypergeometric series of Chu-Gasper-Karlsson-Minton-type.

In this article, we derive some identities for multilateral basic hypergeometric series associated to the root system A_n. First, we apply Ismail's argument to an A_n q-binomial theorem of Milne and derive a new A_n generalization of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation theorem. From this new A_n 1-psi-1 summation and from an A_n 1-psi-1 summation of Gustafson we deduce two lemmas for deriving simple A_n generalizations of bilateral basic hypergeometric series identities. These lemmas are closely related to the Macdonald identities for A_n. As samples for possible applications of these lemmas, we provide several A_n extensions of Bailey's 2-psi-2 transformations, and several A_n extensions of a particular 2-psi-2 summation.

We give elementary derivations of some classical summation formulae for bilateral (basic) hypergeometric series. In particular, we apply Gauss' 2-F-1 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Dougall's 2-H-2 summation. Similarly, we apply Rogers' nonterminating 6-phi-5 summation and elementary series manipulations to give a simple proof of Bailey's very-well-poised 6-psi-6 summation. Our method of proof extends M. Jackson's first elementary proof of Ramanujan's 1-psi-1 summation.

Hypergeometric Series Acceleration Via the WZ method

Based on the WZ method, some series acceleration formulas are given. These formulas allow to write down an infinite family of parametrized identities from any given identity of WZ type. Further, this family, in the case of the Riemann Zeta function, gives rise to many accelerated expressions for $ζ(3)$.
The present method produced a formula, given at the end of the paper, that was used recently Sebastian Wedeniwski to compute Apery's constant to more than 32 million digits, holding the present record!

Major Percy A. MacMahon's first paper on plane partitions included a conjectured generating function for symmetric plane partitions. This conjecture was proven almost simultaneously by George Andrews and Ian Macdonald, Andrews using the machinery of basic hypergeometric series and Macdonald employing his knowledge of symmetric functions. The purpose of this paper is to simplify Macdonald's proof by providing a direct, inductive proof of his formula which expresses the sum of Schur functions whose partitions fit inside a rectangular box as a ratio of determinants.
