Schur Q-polynomials, multiple hypergeometric series and enumeration of marked shifted tableaux
Published in J. Combin. Theory A 115 (2008), 376-406 • View PublicationBIB
We study Schur Q-polynomials evaluated on a geometric progression, or equivalently q-enumeration of marked shifted tableaux, seeking explicit formulas that remain regular at q=1. We obtain several such expressions as multiple basic hypergeometric series, and as determinants and pfaffians of continuous q-ultraspherical or continuous q-Jacobi polynomials. As special cases, we obtain simple closed formulas for staircase-type partitions.

Short Proofs of Summation and Transformation Formulas for Basic Hypergeometric Series
Published in J. Math. Anal. Appl. 327 (2007), 310-325 • View PublicationBIB
We show that several terminating summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series can be proved in a straightforward way. Along the same line, new finite forms of Jacobi's triple product identity and Watson's quintuple product identity are also proved.

Bisymmetric functions, Macdonald polynomials and sl_3 basic hypergeometric series
Published in Compositio Math. 144 (2008), 271-303 • Search Publication
A new type of sl_3 basic hypergeometric series based on Macdonald polynomials is introduced. Besides a pair of Macdonald polynomials attached to two different sets of variables, a key-ingredient in the sl_3 basic hypergeometric series is a bisymmetric function related to Macdonald's commuting family of q-difference operators, to the sl_3 Selberg integrals of Tarasov and Varchenko, and to alternating sign matrices. Our main result for sl_3 series is a multivariable generalization of the celebrated q-binomial theorem. In the limit this q-binomial sum yields a new sl_3 Selberg integral for Jack polynomials.

Eigenproblem for Jacobi matrices: hypergeometric series solution
Published in Phil.Trans.Roy.Soc.Lond.A366:1089-1114,2008 • View PublicationBIB
We study the perturbative power-series expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a general tridiagonal (Jacobi) matrix of dimension d. The(small) expansion parameters are being the entries of the two diagonals of length d-1 sandwiching the principal diagonal, which gives the unperturbed spectrum. The solution is found explicitly in terms of multivariable (Horn-type) hypergeometric series of 3d-5 variables in the generic case, or 2d-3 variables for the eigenvalue growing from a corner matrix element. To derive the result, we first rewrite the spectral problem for a Jacobi matrix as an equivalent system of cubic equations, which are then resolved by the application of the multivariable Lagrange inversion formula. The corresponding Jacobi determinant is calculated explicitly. Explicit formulae are also found for any monomial composed of eigenvector's components.

Nonterminating Basic Hypergeometric Series and the $q$-Zeilberger Algorithm
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a systematic method for proving nonterminating basic hypergeometric identities. Assume that $k$ is the summation index. By setting a parameter $x$ to $xq^n$, we may find a recurrence relation of the summation by using the $q$-Zeilberger algorithm. This method applies to almost all nonterminating basic hypergeometric summation formulas in the book of Gasper and Rahman. Furthermore, by comparing the recursions and the limit values, we may verify many classical transformation formulas, including the Sears-Carlitz transformation, transformations of the very-well-poised $_8φ_7$ series, the Rogers-Fine identity, and the limiting case of Watson's formula that implies the Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

The Generating Function of Ternary Trees and Continued Fractions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Michael Somos conjectured a relation between Hankel determinants whose entries $\frac 1{2n+1}\binom{3n}n$ count ternary trees and the number of certain plane partitions and alternating sign matrices. Tamm evaluated these determinants by showing that the generating function for these entries has a continued fraction that is a special case of Gauss's continued fraction for a quotient of hypergeometric series. We give a systematic application of the continued fraction method to a number of similar Hankel determinants. We also describe a simple method for transforming determinants using the generating function for their entries. In this way we transform Somos's Hankel determinants to known determinants, and we obtain, up to a power of 3, a Hankel determinant for the number of alternating sign matrices. We obtain a combinatorial proof, in terms of nonintersecting paths, of determinant identities involving the number of ternary trees and more general determinant identities involving the number of $r$-ary trees.

The $(f,g)$-inversion formula and its applications: the $(f,g)$-summation formula
A complete characterization of two functions $f(x,y)$ and $g(x,y)$ in the $(f,g)$-inversion is presented. As an application to the theory of hypergeometric series, a general bibasic summation formula determined by $f(x,y)$ and $g(x,y)$ as well as four arbitrary sequences is obtained which unifies Gasper and Rahman's, Chu's and Macdonald's bibasic summation formula. Furthermore, an alternative proof of the $(f,g)$-inversion derived from the $(f,g)$-summation formula is presented. A bilateral $(f,g)$-inversion containing Schlosser's bilateral matrix inversion as a special case is also obtained.

Some more semi-finite forms of bilateral basic hypergeometric series
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove some new semi-finite forms of bilateral basic hypergeometric series. One of them yields in a direct limit Bailey's celebrated ${}_6ψ_6$ summation formula, answering a question recently raised by Chen and Fu ({\em Semi-Finite Forms of Bilateral Basic Hypergeometric Series}, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., to appear).

A Commutative Family of Integral Transformations and Basic Hypergeometric Series. II. Eigenfunctions and Quasi-Eigenfunctions
A series of conjectures is obtained as further investigation of the integral transformation I(alpha) introduced in the previous paper. A Macdonald-type difference operator D is introduced. It is conjectured that D and I(alpha) are commutative with each other. Studying the series for the eigenfunctions under termination conditions, it is observed that a deformed Weyl group action appears as a hidden symmetry. An infinite product formula for the eigenfunction is found for a spacial case of parameters. A one parameter family of hypergeometric-type series F(alpha) is introduced. The series F(alpha) is caracterized by a covariant transformation property I(alpha q^{-1} t) F(alpha)=F(alpha q^{-1} t) and a certain initial condition given at alpha=t^{1/2}. We call F(alpha) the `quasi-eigenfunction' for short. A class of infinite product-type expressions are conjectured for F(alpha) at the special points alpha=-t^{1/2}, alpha=q, alpha=pm q^{1/2}t^{1/2}, and alpha=pm q^{ell}t^{1/2} (ell=1,2,3,cdots).

A Commutative Family of Integral Transformations and Basic Hypergeometric Series. I. Eigenfunctions
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is conjectured that a class of n-fold integral transformations {I(alpha)|alpha in {C}} forms a mutually commutative family, namely, we have I(alpha) I(beta)=I(beta) I(alpha) for all alpha, beta in {C}. The commutativity of I(alpha) for the two-fold integral case is proved by using several summation and transformation formulas for the basic hypergeometric series. An explicit formula for the complete system of the eigenfunctions for n=3 is conjectured. In this formula and in a partial result for n=4, it is observed that all the eigenfunctions do not depend on the spectral parameter alpha of I(alpha).

Semi-Finite Forms of Bilateral Basic Hypergeometric Series
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that several classical bilateral summation and transformation formulas have semi-finite forms. We obtain these semi-finite forms from unilateral summation and transformation formulas. Our method can be applied to derive Ramanujan's $_1ψ_1$ summation, Bailey's $_2ψ_2$ transformations, and Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ summation.
Brill-Gordan Loci, Transvectants and an Analogue of the Foulkes Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Combining a selection of tools from modern algebraic geometry, representation theory, the classical invariant theory of binary forms, together with explicit calculations with hypergeometric series and Feynman diagrams, we obtain the following interrelated results. A Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity bound and a projective normality result for the locus of hypersufaces that are equally supported on two hyperplanes. The surjectivity of an equivariant map between two plethystic compositions of symmetric powers; a statement which is reminiscent of the Foulkes-Howe conjecture. The nonvanishing of even transvectants of exact powers of generic binary forms. The nonvanishing of a collection of symmetric functions defined by sums over magic squares and transportation matrices with nonnegative integer entries. An explicit set of generators, in degree three, for the ideal of the coincident root locus of binary forms with only two roots of equal multiplicity.

The inverse rook problem on Ferrers boards
Rook polynomials have been studied extensively since 1946, principally as a method for enumerating restricted permutations. However, they have also been shown to have many fruitful connections with other areas of mathematics, including graph theory, hypergeometric series, and algebraic geometry. It is known that the rook polynomial of any board can be computed recursively. The naturally arising inverse question -- given a polynomial, what board (if any) is associated with it? -- remains open. In this paper, we solve the inverse problem completely for the class of Ferrers boards, and show that the increasing Ferrers board constructed from a polynomial is unique.

Rational Interpolation and Basic Hypergeometric Series
We give a Newton type rational interpolation formula (Theorem \ref{theo}). It contains as a special case the original Newton interpolation, as well as the recent interpolation formula of Zhi-Guo Liu, which allows to recover many important classical $q$-series identities. We show in particular that some bibasic identities are a consequence of our formula.

On Warnaar's elliptic matrix inversion and Karlsson-Minton-type elliptic hypergeometric series
Published in J. Comput. Appl. Math. 178 (2005), 377-391 • View PublicationBIB
Using Krattenthaler's operator method, we give a new proof of Warnaar's recent elliptic extension of Krattenthaler's matrix inversion. Further, using a theta function identity closely related to Warnaar's inversion, we derive summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series of Karlsson-Minton-type. A special case yields a particular summation that was used by Warnaar to derive quadratic, cubic and quartic transformations for elliptic hypergeometric series. Starting from another theta function identity, we derive yet different summation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric series of Karlsson-Minton-type. These latter identities seem quite unusual and appear to be new already in the trigonometric (i.e., p=0) case.

Summations and transformations for multiple basic and elliptic hypergeometric series by determinant evaluations
Published in Indag. Math. (N.S.) 14 (2003), 483-514 • View PublicationBIB
Using multiple q-integrals and a determinant evaluation, we establish a multivariable extension of Bailey's nonterminating 10-phi-9 transformation. From this result, we deduce new multivariable terminating 10-phi-9 transformations, 8-phi-7 summations and other identities. We also use similar methods to derive new multivariable 1-psi-1 summations. Some of our results are extended to the case of elliptic hypergeometric series.

Positivity preserving transformations for q-binomial coefficients
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 357 (2005), 2291-2351. • View PublicationBIB
Several new transformations for q-binomial coefficients are found, which have the special feature that the kernel is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. By studying the group-like properties of these positivity preserving transformations, as well as their connection with the Bailey lemma, many new summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series are found. The new q-binomial transformations are also applied to obtain multisum Rogers--Ramanujan identities, to find new representations for the Rogers--Szego polynomials, and to make some progress on Bressoud's generalized Borwein conjecture. For the original Borwein conjecture we formulate a refinement based on a new triple sum representations of the Borwein polynomials.
