Apéry's theorem and problems for the values of Riemann's zeta function and their $q$-analogues
This monograph is intended to be considered as my habilitation (D.Sc.) thesis; because of that and as everything has already appeared in English, it is performed exclusively in Russian.
The monograph comprises a detailed introduction and seven chapters that represent part of my work influenced by Apéry's proof from 1978 of the irrationality of $ζ(2)$ and $ζ(3)$, the values of Riemann's zeta function. Chapter 1 is about "at least one of the four numbers $ζ(5)$, $ζ(7)$, $ζ(9)$ and $ζ(11)$ is irrational" (based in part on arXiv:math.NT/0206176). Chapter 2 explains a connection between the generalized multiple integrals introduced by Beukers in his proof of Apéry's result and the very-well-poised hypergeometric series; it is based on arXiv:math.CA/0206177. Chapter 3 surveys some arithmetic and hypergeometric $q$-analogies and establishes the irrationality measure $μ(ζ_q(2))<3.518876$ for a $q$-analogue of $ζ(2)$; it closely follows the text in Sb. Math. 193 (2002), 1151--1172, but also incorporates the sharper analysis of the hypergeometric construction by Smet and Van Assche (arXiv:0809.2501 [math.CA]) to produce the improvement upon the 2002 result. Chapter 4 is devoted to the measure $μ(ζ(2))<5.095412$ and is based on arXiv:1310.1526 [math.NT]; Chapter 5 is establishing the estimate $||(3/2)^k||>0.5803^k$ for the distance from $(3/2)^k$ to the nearest integer, with the English version published in J. Théor. Nombres Bordeaux 19 (2007), 313--325. Chapter 6 reproduces the solution (from arXiv:math.CA/0311195) to the problem of Asmus Schmidt about generalized Apéry's numbers. Finally, Chapter 7 is about expressing the special $L$-values as periods (in the sense of Kontsevich and Zagier), in particular, as values of hypergeometric functions; it is based on the publication in Springer Proc. Math. Stat. 43 (2013), 381--395.
Multiplicate inverse forms of terminating hypergeometric series

The multiplicate form of Gould--Hsu's inverse series relations enables to investigate the dual relations of the Chu-Vandermonde-Gauß's, the Pfaff-Saalschütz's summation theorems and the binomial convolution formula due to Hagen and Rothe. Several identitity and reciprocal relations are thus established for terminating hypergeometric series. By virtue of the duplicate inversions, we establish several dual formulae of Chu-Vandermonde-Gauß's and Pfaff-Saalschütz's summation theorems in Section (3)\cite{ChuVanGauss} and (4)\cite{PfaffSaalsch}, respectively. Finally, the last section is devoted to deriving several identities and reciprocal relations for terminating balanced hypergeometric series from Hagen-Rothe's convolution identity in accordance with the duplicate, triplicate and multiplicate inversions.

Structures of symmetries of transformations for Holman-Biedenharn-Louck $A_n$ hypergeometric series: $A_n$ terminating balanced ${}_4 F_3$ series and $A_n$ elliptic ${}_{10} E_9$ series are discussed. Namely the description of the invariance groups and the classification all of possible transformations for each types of $A_n$ hypergeometric series are given. Among them, a "periodic" affine Coxeter group which seems to be new in the literature arises as an invariance group for a class of $A_n$ ${}_4 F_3$ series.
New proofs of two $q$-analogues of Koshy's formula

In this paper we prove a $q$-analogue of Koshy's formula in terms of the Narayana polynomial due to Lassalle and a $q$-analogue of Koshy's formula in terms of $q$-hypergeometric series due to Andrews by applying the inclusion-exclusion principle on Dyck paths and on partitions. We generalize these two $q$-analogues of Koshy's formula for $q$-Catalan numbers to that for $q$-Ballot numbers. This work also answers an open question by Lassalle and two questions raised by Andrews in 2010. We conjecture that if $n$ is odd, then for $m\ge n\ge 1$, the polynomial $(1+q^n){m\brack n-1}_q$ is unimodal. If $n$ is even, for any even $j\ne 0$ and $m\ge n\ge 1$, the polynomial $(1+q^n)[j]_q{m\brack n-1}_q$ is unimodal. This implies the answer to the second problem posed by Andrews.
Spanning forests in regular planar maps

We address the enumeration of p-valent planar maps equipped with a spanning forest, with a weight z per face and a weight u per connected component of the forest. Equivalently, we count p-valent maps equipped with a spanning tree, with a weight z per face and a weight μ:=u+1 per internally active edge, in the sense of Tutte; or the (dual) p-angulations equipped with a recurrent sandpile configuration, with a weight z per vertex and a variable μ:=u+1 that keeps track of the level of the configuration. This enumeration problem also corresponds to the limit q -> 0 of the q-state Potts model on p-angulations. Our approach is purely combinatorial. The associated generating function, denoted F(z,u), is expressed in terms of a pair of series defined implicitly by a system involving doubly hypergeometric series. We derive from this system that F(z,u) is differentially algebraic in z, that is, satisfies a differential equation in z with polynomial coefficients in z and u. This has recently been proved to hold for the more general Potts model on 3-valent maps, but via a much more involved and less combinatorial proof. For u >= -1, we study the singularities of F(z,u) and the corresponding asymptotic behaviour of its n-th coefficient. For u>0, we find the standard asymptotic behaviour of planar maps, with a subexponential term in n^{-5/2}. At u=0 we witness a phase transition with a term n^{-3}. When u\in[-1,0), we obtain an extremely unusual behaviour in n^{-3}(\ln n)^{-2}. To our knowledge, this is a new "universality class" for planar maps.

By using contiguous relations for basic hypergeometric series, we give simple proofs of Bailey's $_4φ_3$ summation, Carlitz's $_5φ_4$ summation, Sears' $_3φ_2$ to $_5φ_4$ transformation, Sears' ${}_4φ_3$ transformations, Chen's bibasic summation, Gasper's split poised $_{10}φ_9$ transformation, Chu's bibasic symmetric transformation. Along the same line, finite forms of Sylvester's identity, Jacobi's triple product identity, and Kang's identity are also obtained.
Expansion Formulas of Basic Hypergeometric Series via the (1-xy,y-x)--Inversion and Its Applications
With the use of the $(f,g)$-matrix inversion under specializations that $f=1-xy,g=y-x$, we establish an $(1-xy,y-x)$-expansion formula. When specialized to basic hypergeometric series, this $(1-xy,y-x)$-expansion formula leads us to some expansion formulas expressing any ${}_{r}φ_{s}$ series in variable $x~t$ in terms of a linear combination of ${}_{r+2}φ_{s+1}$ series in $t$, as well as various specifications. All these results can be regarded as common generalizations of many konwn expansion formulas in the setting of $q$-series. As specific applications, some new transformation formulas of $q$-series including new approach to the Askey-Wilson polynomials, the Rogers-Fine identity, Andrews' four-parametric reciprocity theorem and Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$ summation formula, as well as a transformation for certain well-poised Bailey pairs, are presented.

We prove a general quadratic formula for basic hypergeometric series, from which simple proofs of several recent determinant and Pfaffian formulas are obtained. A special case of the quadratic formula is actually related to a Gram determinant formula for Askey-Wilson polynomials. We also show how to derive a recent double-sum formula for the moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials from Newton's interpolation formula.
Binomial coefficient-harmonic sum identities associated to supercongruences

We establish two binomial coefficient--generalized harmonic sum identities using the partial fraction decomposition method. These identities are a key ingredient in the proofs of numerous supercongruences. In particular, in other works of the author, they are used to establish modulo $p^k$ ($k>1$) congruences between truncated generalized hypergeometric series, and a function which extends Greene's hypergeometric function over finite fields to the $p$-adic setting. A specialization of one of these congruences is used to prove an outstanding conjecture of Rodriguez-Villegas which relates a truncated generalized hypergeometric series to the $p$-th Fourier coefficient of a particular modular form.

The q-semicircular distribution is a probability law that interpolates between the Gaussian law and the semicircular law. There is a combinatorial interpretation of its moments in terms of matchings where q follows the number of crossings, whereas for the free cumulants one has to restrict the enumeration to connected matchings. The purpose of this article is to describe combinatorial properties of the classical cumulants. We show that like the free cumulants, they are obtained by an enumeration of connected matchings, the weight being now an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial of a so-called crossing graph. The case q=0 of these cumulants was studied by Lassalle using symmetric functions and hypergeometric series. We show that the underlying combinatorics is explained through the theory of heaps, which is Viennot's geometric interpretation of the Cartier-Foata monoid. This method also gives results for the classical cumulants of the free Poisson law.
Partial theta functions and mock modular forms as q-hypergeometric series

Ramanujan studied the analytic properties of many $q$-hypergeometric series. Of those, mock theta functions have been particularly intriguing, and by work of Zwegers, we now know how these curious $q$-series fit into the theory of automorphic forms. The analytic theory of partial theta functions however, which have $q$-expansions resembling modular theta functions, is not well understood. Here we consider families of $q$-hypergeometric series which converge in two disjoint domains. In one domain, we show that these series are often equal to one another, and define mock theta functions, including the classical mock theta functions of Ramanujan, as well as certain combinatorial generating functions, as special cases. In the other domain, we prove that these series are typically not equal to one another, but instead are related by partial theta functions.
A noncommutative weight-dependent generalization of the binomial theorem
A weight-dependent generalization of the binomial theorem for noncommuting variables is presented. This result extends the well-known binomial theorem for q-commuting variables by a generic weight function depending on two integers. For a special case of the weight function, restricting it to depend on only a single integer, the noncommutative binomial theorem involves an expansion of complete symmetric functions. Another special case concerns the weight function to be a suitably chosen elliptic (i.e., doubly-periodic meromorphic) function, in which case an elliptic generalization of the binomial theorem is obtained. The latter is utilized to quickly recover Frenkel and Turaev's elliptic hypergeometric 10V9 summation formula, an identity fundamental to the theory of elliptic hypergeometric series.

We survey the applications of an elementary identity used by Euler in one of his proofs of the Pentagonal Number Theorem. Using a suitably reformulated version of this identity that we call Euler's Telescoping Lemma, we give alternate proofs of all the key summation theorems for terminating Hypergeometric Series and Basic Hypergeometric Series, including the terminating Binomial Theorem, the Chu--Vandermonde sum, the Pfaff--Saalch\" utz sum, and their $q$-analogues. We also give a proof of Jackson's $q$-analog of Dougall's sum, the sum of a terminating, balanced, very-well-poised $_8φ_7$ sum. Our proofs are conceptually the same as those obtained by the WZ method, but done without using a computer. We survey identities for Generalized Hypergeometric Series given by Macdonald, and prove several identities for $q$-analogs of Fibonacci numbers and polynomials and Pell numbers that have appeared in combinatorial contexts. Some of these identities appear to be new.

In this paper we shall survey the various methods of evaluating Hankel determinants and as an illustration we evaluate some Hankel determinants of a q-analogue of Catalan numbers. Here we consider $\frac{(aq;q)_{n}}{(abq^{2};q)_{n}}$ as a q-analogue of Catalan numbers $C_{n}=\frac1{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$, which is known as the moments of the little q-Jacobi polynomials. We also give several proofs of this q-analogue, in which we use lattice paths, the orthogonal polynomials, or the basic hypergeometric series. We also consider a q-analogue of Schröder Hankel determinants, and give a new proof of Moztkin Hankel determinants using an addition formula for ${}_2F_{1}$.

Kasraoui, Stanton and Zeng, and Kim, Stanton and Zeng introduced certain $q$-analogues of Laguerre and Charlier polynomials. The moments of these orthogonal polynomials have combinatorial models in terms of crossings in permutations and set partitions. The aim of this article is to prove simple formulas for the moments of the $q$-Laguerre and the $q$-Charlier polynomials, in the style of the Touchard-Riordan formula (which gives the moments of some $q$-Hermite polynomials, and also the distribution of crossings in matchings). Our method mainly consists in the enumeration of weighted Motzkin paths, which are naturally associated with the moments. Some steps are bijective, in particular we describe a decomposition of paths which generalises a previous construction of Penaud for the case of the Touchard-Riordan formula. There are also some non-bijective steps using basic hypergeometric series, and continued fractions or, alternatively, functional equations.
Coxeter group actions on Saalschützian ${}_4F_3(1)$ series and very-well-poised ${}_7F_6(1)$ series
In this paper we consider a function $L(\vec{x})=L(a,b,c,d;e;f,g)$, which can be written as a linear combination of two Saalschützian ${}_4F_3(1)$ hypergeometric series or as a very-well-poised ${}_7F_6(1)$ hypergeometric series. We explore two-term and three-term relations satisfied by the $L$ function and put them in the framework of group theory.
We prove a fundamental two-term relation satisfied by the $L$ function and show that this relation implies that the Coxeter group $W(D_5)$, which has 1920 elements, is an invariance group for $L(\vec{x})$. The invariance relations for $L(\vec{x})$ are classified into six types based on a double coset decomposition of the invariance group. The fundamental two-term relation is shown to generalize classical results about hypergeometric series. We derive Thomae's identity for ${}_3F_2(1)$ series, Bailey's identity for terminating Saalschützian ${}_4F_3(1)$ series, and Barnes' second lemma as consequences.
We further explore three-term relations satisfied by $L(a,b,c,d;e;f,g)$. The group that governs the three-term relations is shown to be isomorphic to the Coxeter group $W(D_6)$, which has 23040 elements. Based on the right cosets of $W(D_5)$ in $W(D_6)$, we demonstrate the existence of 220 three-term relations satisfied by the $L$ function that fall into two families according to the notion of $L$-coherence.
Supercongruences for a truncated hypergeometric series
The purpose of this note is to obtain some congruences modulo a power of a prime $p$ involving the truncated hypergeometric series $$\sum_{k=1}^{p-1} {(x)_k(1-x)_k\over (1)_k^2}\cdot{1\over k^a}$$ for $a=1$ and $a=2$. In the last section, the special case $x=1/2$ is considered.
Asymptotic analysis of a Selberg-type integral via hypergeometrics
We show how to determine the asymptotics of a certain Selberg-type integral by means of tools available in the theory of (generalised) hypergeometric series. This provides an alternative derivation of a result of Carré, Deneufchâtel, Luque and Vivo [arXiv:1003.5996].
