Some $q$-supercongruences from transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series
Several new $q$-supercongruences are obtained using transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, together with various techniques such as suitably combining terms, and creative microscoping, a method recently developed by the first author in collaboration with Wadim Zudilin. More concretely, the results in this paper include $q$-analogues of supercongruences (referring to $p$-adic identities remaining valid for some higher power of $p$) established by Long, by Long and Ramakrishna, and several other $q$-supercongruences. The six basic hypergeometric transformation formulas which are made use of are Watson's transformation, a quadratic transformation of Rahman, a cubic transformation of Gasper and Rahman, a quartic transformation of Gasper and Rahman, a double series transformation of Ismail, Rahman and Suslov, and a new transformation formula for a nonterminating very-well-poised ${}_{12}φ_{11}$ series. Also, the nonterminating $q$-Dixon summation formula is used. A special case of the new ${}_{12}φ_{11}$ transformation formula is further utilized to obtain a generalization of Rogers' linearization formula for the continuous $q$-ultraspherical polynomials.

Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $n$ be a positive integer. For any positive integer $α$ and $m\in\{1,2,3\}$, we have \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p^αn-1}\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\cdot\frac{(-4)^k}{m^k}\equiv\bigg(\frac{m(m-4)}{p}\bigg)\sum_{k=0}^{p^{α-1}n-1}\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\cdot\frac{(-4)^k}{m^k}\pmod{p^{2α}}, \end{align*} where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ and $\big(\frac{\cdot}{\cdot}\big)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. Also, when $m=4$, \begin{align*} \sum_{k=0}^{p^αn-1}(-1)^k\cdot\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\equiv p\sum_{k=0}^{p^{α-1}n-1}(-1)^k\cdot\frac{(\frac12)_k}{k!}\pmod{p^{2α}}. \end{align*}
Proofs and reductions of various conjectured partition identities of Kanade and Russell
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove seven of the Rogers-Ramanujan type identities modulo $12$ that were conjectured by Kanade and Russell. Included among these seven are the two original modulo $12$ identities, in which the products have asymmetric congruence conditions, as well as the three symmetric identities related to the principally specialized characters of certain level $2$ modules of $A_9^{(2)}$. We also give reductions of four other conjectures in terms of single-sum basic hypergeometric series.

Lattice paths and branched continued fractions: An infinite sequence of generalizations of the Stieltjes--Rogers and Thron--Rogers polynomials, with coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity
We define an infinite sequence of generalizations, parametrized by an integer $m \ge 1$, of the Stieltjes--Rogers and Thron--Rogers polynomials; they arise as the power-series expansions of some branched continued fractions, and as the generating polynomials for $m$-Dyck and $m$-Schröder paths with height-dependent weights. We prove that all of these sequences of polynomials are coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive, jointly in all the (infinitely many) indeterminates. We then apply this theory to prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity for combinatorially interesting sequences of polynomials. Enumeration of unlabeled ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Fuss--Narayana polynomials and Fuss--Narayana symmetric functions. Enumeration of increasing (labeled) ordered trees and forests gives rise to multivariate Eulerian polynomials and Eulerian symmetric functions, which include the univariate $m$th-order Eulerian polynomials as specializations. We also find branched continued fractions for ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series ${}_r \! F_s$ for arbitrary $r$ and $s$, which generalize Gauss' continued fraction for ratios of contiguous ${}_2 \! F_1$; and for $s=0$ we prove the coefficientwise Hankel-total positivity. Finally, we extend the branched continued fractions to ratios of contiguous basic hypergeometric series ${}_r \! φ_s$.

Let $n\geq 3$ be an integer and $p$ be a prime with $p\equiv 1\pmod{n}$. In this paper, we show that $${}_nF_{n-1}\bigg[\begin{matrix} \frac{n-1}{n}&\frac{n-1}{n}&\ldots&\frac{n-1}{n}\\ &1&\ldots&1\end{matrix}\bigg | \, 1\bigg]_{p-1}\equiv -Γ_p\bigg(\frac{1}{n}\bigg)^n\pmod{p^3}, $$ where the truncated hypergeometric series $$_nF_{n-1} \bigg[\begin{matrix} x_1&x_2&\ldots&x_n\\ &y_1&\cdots&y_{n-1}\end{matrix}\bigg | \, z\bigg]_m=\sum_{k=0}^{m}\frac{z^k}{k!}\prod_{j=0}^{k-1}\frac{(x_1+j)\cdots(x_{n}+j)}{(y_1+j)\cdots(y_{n-1}+j)} $$ and $Γ_p$ denotes the $p$-adic gamma function. This confirms a conjecture of Deines, Fuselier, Long, Swisher and Tu. Furthermore, under the same assumptions, we also prove that $$p^n\cdot {}_{n+1} F_n \bigg[ \begin{matrix} 1 &1 &\ldots &1\\ &\frac{n+1}{n} &\ldots &\frac{n+1}{n} \end{matrix}\bigg | \, 1\bigg]_{p-1} \equiv -Γ_p \Bigl(\frac{1}{n} \Bigr)^n \quad(\mathrm{mod}\ {p^3}),$$ which solves another conjecture of Deines, Fuselier, Long, Swisher and Tu.

Using some properties of the gamma function and the well-known Gauss summation formula for the classical hypergeometric series, we prove a four-parameter series expansion formula, which can produce infinitely many Ramanujan type series for $1/π$.

Recursion formulas of q-Appell functions
Recently, Opps, Saad and Srivastava gave the recursion formulas of Appell's function F2. The first author of this paper then established the recursion formulas for Appell functions F1, F2, F3 and F4 by the contiguous relations of hypergeometric series. In this paper, the authors will present the recursion formulas for q-Appell functions $Φ^{(1)}, Φ^{(2)}, Φ^{(3)}$ and $Φ^{(4)}$ as the q-analogies of F1, F2, F3 and F4's relations.

A symmetric formula for hypergeometric series
Published • View PublicationBIB
In terms of Dougall's $_2H_2$ series identity and the series rearrangement method, we establish an interesting symmetric formula for hypergeometric series. Then it is utilized to derive a known nonterminating form of Saalschütz's theorem. Similarly, we also show that Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ series identity implies the nonterminating form of Jackson's $_8φ_7$ summation formula. Considering the reversibility of the proofs, it is routine to show that Dougall's $_2H_2$ series identity is equivalent to a known nonterminating form of Saalschütz's theorem and Bailey's $_6ψ_6$ series identity is equivalent to the nonterminating form of Jackson's $_8φ_7$ summation formula.

The generating function of planar Eulerian orientations
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 2020 • View PublicationBIB
The enumeration of planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation has attracted attention in both combinatorics and theoretical physics since at least 2000. The case of 4-valent maps is particularly interesting: these orientations are in bijection with properly 3-coloured quadrangulations, while in physics they correspond to configurations of the ice model. We solve both problems -- namely the enumeration of planar Eulerian orientations and of 4-valent planar Eulerian orientations -- by expressing the associated generating functions as the inverses (for the composition of series) of simple hypergeometric series. Using these expressions, we derive the asymptotic behaviour of the number of planar Eulerian orientations, thus proving earlier predictions of Kostov, Zinn-Justin, Elvey Price and Guttmann. This behaviour, $μ^n /(n \log n)^2$, prevents the associated generating functions from being D-finite. Still, these generating functions are differentially algebraic, as they satisfy non-linear differential equations of order $2$. Differential algebraicity has recently been proved for other map problems, in particular for maps equipped with a Potts model. Our solutions mix recursive and bijective ingredients. In particular, a preliminary bijection transforms our oriented maps into maps carrying a height function on their vertices. In the 4-valent case, we also observe an unexpected connection with the enumeration of maps equipped with a spanning tree that is internally inactive in the sense of Tutte. This connection remains to be explained combinatorially.

We confirm a conjecture of Sun and prove that $${}_{2r+1}F_{2r}\bigg[\begin{matrix}α&α&\ldots&α\\ &1&\ldots&1\end{matrix}\bigg|\,1\bigg]_{p-1}\equiv0\pmod{p^2},$$ where the truncated hypergeometric series $$ {}_{q+1}F_{q}\bigg[\begin{matrix}x_0&x_1&\ldots&x_{q}\\ &y_1&\ldots&y_q\end{matrix}\bigg|\,z\bigg]_{n}:=\sum_{k=0}^n\frac{(x_0)_k(x_1)_k\cdots(x_q)_k}{(y_1)_k\cdot (y_q)_k}\cdot\frac{z^k}{k!}. $$

The colored Jones polynomial and Kontsevich-Zagier series for double twist knots
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications 30 (2021), no. 5, Paper No. 2150031, 28 pp • View PublicationBIB
Using a result of Takata, we prove a formula for the colored Jones polynomial of the double twist knots $K_{(-m,-p)}$ and $K_{(-m,p)}$ where $m$ and $p$ are positive integers. In the $(-m,-p)$ case, this leads to new families of $q$-hypergeometric series generalizing the Kontsevich-Zagier series. Comparing with the cyclotomic expansion of the colored Jones polynomials of $K_{(m,p)}$ gives a generalization of a duality at roots of unity between the Kontsevich-Zagier function and the generating function for strongly unimodal sequences.

On Certain Degenerate Whittaker Models for Cuspidal Representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{k\cdot n}\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right)$
Published in Math. Z. 291 (2019), no. 1-2, 609-633 • View PublicationBIB
Let $π$ be an irreducible cuspidal representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{kn}\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right)$. Assume that $π= π_θ$, corresponds to a regular character $θ$ of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{kn}}^{*}$. We consider the twisted Jacquet module of $π$ with respect to a non-degenerate character of the unipotent radical corresponding to the partition $(n^k)$ of $kn$. We show that, as a $\mathrm{GL}_{n}\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right)$-representation, this Jacquet module is isomorphic to $π_{θ\upharpoonright_{\mathbb{F}_n^*}} \otimes \mathrm{St}^{k-1}$, where $\mathrm{St}$ is the Steinberg representation of $\mathrm{GL}_{n}\left(\mathbb{F}_q\right)$. This generalizes a theorem of D. Prasad, who considered the case $k=2$. We prove and rely heavily on a formidable identity involving $q$-hypergeometric series and linear algebra.

Hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an overview of some of the main results from the theories of hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems. In particular, we list a number of summations, transformations and explicit evaluations for such multiple series and integrals. We concentrate on such results which do not directly extend to the elliptic level. This text is a provisional version of a chapter on hypergeometric and basic hypergeometric series and integrals associated with root systems for volume 2 of the new Askey--Bateman project which deals with "Multivariable special functions".

Supercongruences for rigid hypergeometric Calabi--Yau threefolds
Published in Adv. Math. 393 (2021) Article 108058 • View PublicationBIB
We establish the supercongruences for the fourteen rigid hypergeometric Calabi--Yau threefolds over $\mathbb Q$ conjectured by Rodriguez-Villegas in 2003. Our first method is based on Dwork's theory of $p$-adic unit roots and it allows us to establish the supercongruences between the truncated hypergeometric series and the corresponding unit roots for ordinary primes. The other method makes use of the theory of hypergeometric motives, in particular, adapts the techniques from the recent work of Beukers, Cohen and Mellit on finite hypergeometric sums over $\mathbb Q$. Essential ingredients in executing the both approaches are the modularity of the underlying Calabi--Yau threefolds and a $p$-adic perturbation method applied to hypergeometric functions.

On a Class of Polynomials Generated by F (xt -- R(t))
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate polynomial sets {P n } n$\ge$0 with generating power series of the form F (xt -- R(t)) and satisfying, for n $\ge$ 0, the (d + 1)-order recursion xP\_ n (x) = P\_{ n+1 }(x) +\sum\_{ l=0}^{d} γ^{l}\_{n} P\_{ n--l} (x), where \ {γ^{l}\_{ n}\ } is a complex sequence for 0 $\le$ l $\le$ d, P \_0 (x) = 1 and P \_n (x) = 0 for all negative integer n. We show that the formal power series R(t) is a polynomial of degree at most d + 1 if certain coefficients of R(t) are null or if F (t) is a generalized hypergeometric series. Moreover, for the d-symmetric case we demonstrate that R(t) is the monomial of degree d + 1 and F (t) is expressed by hypergeometric series.

A modular supercongruence for $_6F_5$: an Apéry-like story

We prove a supercongruence modulo $p^3$ between the $p$th Fourier coefficient of a weight 6 modular form and a truncated ${}_6F_5$-hypergeometric series. Novel ingredients in the proof are the comparison of two rational approximations to $ζ(3)$ to produce non-trivial harmonic sum identities and the reduction of the resulting congruences between harmonic sums via a congruence between the Apéry numbers and another Apéry-like sequence.

From it we deduce some related supercongruences, which extend certain recent results and confirm a supercongruence conjecture.
