Let $r\geq 1$ be a positive integer, $A$ a real positive definite symmetric $r\times r$ matrix, $B$ a vector of length $r$, and $C$ a scalar. Nahm's problem is to describe all such $A,B$ and $C$ with rational entries for which a specific $r$-fold $q$-hypergeometric series (denoted by $f_{A,B,C}(q)$) involving the parameters $A,B,C$ is modular. When the rank $r=2$, Zagier provided eleven sets of examples of $(A,B,C)$ for which $f_{A,B,C}(q)$ is likely to be modular. We present a number of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities involving double sums, which give modular representations for Zagier's rank two examples. Together with several known cases in the literature, we verified ten of Zagier's examples and give conjectural identities for the remaining example.

We present (bi-)symmetric generating functions for the joint distributions of Euler-Stirling statistics on permutations, including the number of descents ($\mathsf{des}$), inverse descents ($\mathsf{ides}$), the number of left-to-right maxima ($\mathsf{lmax}$), the number of right-to-left maxima ($\mathsf{rmax}$) and the number of left-to-right minima ($\mathsf{lmin}$). We also show how they recover the classical symmetric generating function of permutations due to Carlitz, Roselle and Scoville (1966).
Our proofs exploit three different recursive constructions of inversion sequences, bijections on the multiple equidistributions of Euler-Stirling statistics over permutations and transformation formulas of basic hypergeometric series. Furthermore, we establish a new quadruple equidistribution of Euler-Stirling statistics over inversion sequences, as progress towards a conjecture proposed by Schlosser and the author (2020).

With the help of the partial derivative operator and several summation formulas for hypergeometric series, we find three double series for $π$. In terms of the operator just stated and several summation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, we also establish $q$-analogues of these double series.
Cyclotomic valuation of $q$-Pochhammer symbols and $q$-integrality of basic hypergeometric series

We give a formula for the cyclotomic valuation of $q$-Pochhammer symbols in terms of (generalized) Dwork maps. We also obtain a criterion for the $q$-integrality of basic hypergeometric series in terms of certain step functions, which generalize Christol step functions. This provides suitable $q$-analogs of two results proved by Christol: a formula for the $p$-adic valuation of Pochhammer symbols and a criterion for the $N$-integrality of hypergeometric series.
Multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with branched continued fractions for ratios of hypergeometric series

The main objects of the investigation presented in this paper are branched-continued-fraction representations of ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series and type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line with respect to linear functionals or measures whose moments are ratios of products of Pochhammer symbols. This is an interesting case study of the recently found connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials and branched continued fractions that gives a clear example of how this connection leads to considerable advances on both topics. We obtain new results about generating polynomials of lattice paths and total positivity of matrices and give new contributions to the general theory of the connection between multiple orthogonal polynomials and branched continued fractions. We construct new branched continued fractions for ratios of contiguous hypergeometric series. We give conditions for positivity of the coefficients of these branched continued fractions and we show that the ratios of products of Pochhammer symbols are generating polynomials of lattice paths for a special case of the same branched continued fractions. We introduce a family of type II multiple orthogonal polynomials on the step-line associated with those branched continued fractions. We present a formula as terminating hypergeometric series for these polynomials, we study their differential properties, and we explicitly find their recurrence relation coefficients. Finally, we focus the analysis of the multiple orthogonal polynomials to the cases where the corresponding branched-continued-fraction coefficients are all positive. In those cases, the orthogonality conditions can be written using measures on the positive real line involving Meijer G-functions and we obtain results about the location of the zeros and the asymptotic behaviour of the polynomials.
Combinatorial identities and hypergeometric series
This paper describes a method to find a connection between combinatorial identities and hypergeometric series with a number of examples. Combinatorial identities can often be written as hypergeometric series with unit argument. In a number of cases these hypergeometric series are balanced and can be reduced to a simpler form. In this paper some combinatorial identities are proved using this method assuming that the results in the tables of Prudnikov et al. [12] are proven without using hypergeometric functions.
Mock theta functions and related combinatorics

In this paper we add to the literature on the combinatorial nature of the mock theta functions, a collection of curious $q$-hypergeometric series introduced by Ramanujan in his last letter to Hardy in 1920, which we now know to be important examples of mock modular forms. Our work is inspired by Beck's conjecture, now a theorem of Andrews, related to Euler's identity: the excess of the number of parts in all partitions of $n$ into odd parts over the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts is equal to the number of partitions with only one (possibly repeated) even part and all other parts odd. We establish Beck-type identities associated to partition identities due to Andrews, Dixit, and Yee for the third order mock theta functions $ω(q), ν(q)$, and $φ(q)$. Our proofs are both analytic and combinatorial in nature, and involve mock theta generating functions and combinatorial bijections.

Employing a quadratic transformation formula of Rahman and the method of `creative microscoping' (introduced by the author and Zudilin in 2019), we provide some new $q$-supercongruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series. In particular, we confirm two recent conjectures of Liu and Wang. We also propose some related conjectures on supercongruences and $q$-supercongruences.
Some q-supercongruences on double and triple sums
In this paper, we investigate a number of $q$-supercongruences on double and triple sums. By means of a lemma devised by El Bachraoui and its generalization, we transform some $q$-supercongruences on double and triple sums into the $q$-supercongruences of the square and cube of truncated basic hypergeometric series. Our main tools still involve the `creative microscoping' method introduced by Guo and Zudilin, a lemma designed by Guo and Li and the Chinese remainder theorem.

In 2017, He [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 145 (2017), 501--508] established two spuercongruences on truncated hypergeometric series and further proposed two related conjectures. Subsequently, Liu [Results Math. 72 (2017), 2057--2066] extended He's formulas and confirmed the second conjecture. However, the first conjecture is still open up to now. With the help of the creative microscoping method and the Chinese remainder theorem for coprime polynomials, we derive several $q$-supercongruences modulo the fourth and fifth powers of a cyclotomic polynomial from Gasper and Rahman's summation formula for basic hypergeometric series. As conclusions, He's first conjecture is confirmed and a more general form of He's second conjecture is proved.

We generalize a terminating summation formula to a unilateral nonterminating, and further, a bilateral summation formula by a property of analytic functions. The unilateral one is proved to be a $q$-analogue of a $_4F_3$-summation formula. And, an identity unifying Jacobi's triple product identity and the quintuple product identity is obtained as a special case of the bilateral one.
Gosper Summability of Rational Multiples of Hypergeometric Terms

By telescoping method, Sun gave some hypergeometric series whose sums are related to $π$ recently. We investigate these series from the point of view of Gosper's algorithm. Given a hypergeometric term $t_k$, we consider the Gosper summability of $r(k)t_k$ for $r(k)$ being a rational function of $k$. We give an upper bound and a lower bound on the degree of the numerator of $r(k)$ such that $r(k)t_k$ is Gosper summable. We also show that the denominator of the $r(k)$ can read from the Gosper representation of $t_{k+1}/t_k$. Based on these results, we give a systematic method to construct series whose sums can be derived from the known ones. We also illustrated the corresponding super-congruences and the $q$-analogue of the approach.

For any $m,n\in\mathbb{N}=\{0,1,2\ldots\}$, the truncated hypergeometric series ${}_{m+1}F_m$ is defined by $$ {}_{m+1}F_m\bigg[\begin{matrix}x_0&x_1&\ldots&x_m\\ &y_1&\ldots&y_m\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\frac{(x_0)_k(x_1)_k\cdots(x_m)_k}{(y_1)_k\cdots(y_m)_k}\cdot\frac{z^k}{k!}, $$ where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ is the Pochhammer symbol. Let $p$ be an odd prime. For $α,z\in\mathbb{Z}_p$ with $\langle -α\rangle_p\equiv0\pmod{2}$, where $\langle x\rangle_p$ denotes the least nonnegative residue of $x$ modulo $p$ for any $x\in\mathbb{Z}_p$, we mainly prove the following congruence motivated by Orr's identity: $$ {}_2F_1\bigg[\begin{matrix}\frac12α&\frac32-\frac12α\\ &1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}{}_2F_1\bigg[\begin{matrix}\frac12α&\frac12-\frac12α\\ &1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}\equiv{}_3F_2\bigg[\begin{matrix}α&2-α&\frac12\\ &1&1\end{matrix}\bigg|z\bigg]_{p-1}\pmod{p^2}. $$ As a corollary, for any positive integer $b$ with $p\equiv\pm1\pmod{b}$ and $\langle -1/b\rangle_p\equiv0\pmod{2}$, we deduce that $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}(b^2k+b-1)\frac{\binom{2k}{k}}{4^k}\binom{-1/b}{k}\binom{1/b-1}{k}\equiv0\pmod{p^2}. $$ This confirms a conjectural congruence of the second author.

We prove two multivariate $q$-binomial identities conjectured by Bousseau, Brini and van Garrel [Geom. Topol. 28 (2024), 393-496, arXiv:2011.08830] which give generating series for Gromov-Witten invariants of two specific log Calabi-Yau surfaces. The key identity in all the proofs is Jackson's $q$-analogue of the Pfaff-Saalschütz summation formula from the theory of basic hypergeometric series.

In this paper, we prove some supercongruences concerning truncated hypergeometric series. For example, we show that for any prime $p>3$ and positive integer $r$, $$ \sum_{k=0}^{p^r-1}(3k+1)\frac{(\frac12)_k^3}{(1)_k^3}4^k\equiv p^r+\frac76p^{r+3}B_{p-3}\pmod{p^{r+4}} $$ and $$ \sum_{k=0}^{(p^r-1)/2}(4k+1)\frac{(\frac12)_k^4}{(1)_k^4}\equiv p^r+\frac76p^{r+3}B_{p-3}\pmod{p^{r+4}}, $$ where $(x)_k=x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1)$ is the Pochhammer symbol and $B_0,B_1,B_2,\ldots$ are Bernoulli numbers. These two congruences confirm conjectures of Sun [Sci. China Math. 54 (2011), 2509--2535] and Guo [Adv. Appl. Math. 120 (2020), Art. 102078], respectively.
$q$-analogs of sinc sums and integrals
$q$-analogs of sum equals integral relations $\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}f(n)=\int_{-\infty}^\infty f(x)dx$ for sinc functions and binomial coefficients are studied. Such analogs are already known in the context of $q$-hypergeometric series. This paper deals with multibasic `fractional' generalizations that are not $q$-hypergeometric functions.
Proof of a bi-symmetric septuple equidistribution on ascent sequences

It is well known since the seminal work by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev (2010) that certain refinements of the ascent sequences with respect to several natural statistics are in bijection with corresponding refinements of $({\bf2+2})$-free posets and permutations that avoid a bivincular pattern. Different multiply-refined enumerations of ascent sequences and other bijectively equivalent structures have subsequently been extensively studied by various authors.
In this paper, our main contributions are
1. a bijective proof of a bi-symmetric septuple equidistribution of statistics on ascent sequences, involving the number of ascents (asc), the number of repeated entries (rep), the number of zeros (zero), the number of maximal entries (max), the number of right-to-left minima (rmin) and two auxiliary statistics;
2. a new transformation formula for non-terminating basic hypergeometric $_4φ_3$ series expanded as an analytic function in base $q$ around $q=1$, which is utilized to prove two (bi)-symmetric quadruple equidistributions on ascent sequences.
A by-product of our findings includes the affirmation of a conjecture about the bi-symmetric equidistribution between the quadruples of Euler--Stirling statistics (asc, rep, zero, max) and (rep, asc, max, zero) on ascent sequences, that was motivated by a double Eulerian equidistribution due to Foata (1977) and recently proposed by Fu, Lin, Yan, Zhou and the first author (2018).
Eulerian series, zeta functions and the arithmetic of partitions
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical number theory and analysis arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. Among our applications, we prove explicit formulas for the coefficients of the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov, a partition-theoretic operator from statistical physics related to quasi-modular forms; we prove partition formulas for arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the integers, giving $q$-series formulas to evaluate the Riemann zeta function; we study $q$-hypergeometric series related to quantum modular forms and the "strange" function of Kontsevich; and we show how Ramanujan's odd-order mock theta functions (and, more generally, the universal mock theta function $g_3$ of Gordon-McIntosh) arise from the reciprocal of the Jacobi triple product via the $q$-bracket operator, connecting also to unimodal sequences in combinatorics and quantum modular-like phenomena.
