Combinatorial flats and Schubert varieties of subspace arrangements
The lattice of flats $\mathcal L_M$ of a matroid $M$ is combinatorially well-behaved and, when $M$ is realizable, admits a geometric model in the form of a "Schubert variety of hyperplane arrangement". In contrast, the lattice of flats of a polymatroid exhibits many combinatorial pathologies and admits no similar geometric model.
We address this situation by defining the lattice $\mathcal L_P$ of "combinatorial flats" of a polymatroid $P$. Combinatorially, $\mathcal L_P$ exhibits good behavior analogous to that of $\mathcal L_M$: it is graded, determines $P$ when $P$ is simple, and is top-heavy. When $P$ is realizable over a field of characteristic 0, we show that $\mathcal L_P$ is modeled by "the Schubert variety of a subspace arrangement".
Our work generalizes a number of results of Ardila-Boocher and Huh-Wang on Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements; however, the geometry of Schubert varieties of subspace arrangements is noticeably more complicated than that of Schubert varieties of hyperplane arrangements. Many natural questions remain open.

We study scattering equations of hyperplane arrangements from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra and numerical algebraic geometry. We formulate the problem as linear equations on a reciprocal linear space and develop a degeneration-based homotopy algorithm for solving them. We investigate the Hilbert regularity of the corresponding homogeneous ideal and apply our methods to CHY scattering equations.
Acyclotopes and Tocyclotopes
There is a well-established dictionary between zonotopes, hyperplane arrangements, and their (oriented) matroids. Arguably one of the most famous examples is the class of graphical zonotopes, also called acyclotopes, which encode subzonotopes of the type-A root polytope, the permutahedron. Stanley (1991) gave a general interpretation of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial (integer-point counting function for a polytope) of a zonotope via linearly independent subsets of its generators. Applying this to the graphical case shows that Ehrhart coefficients count induced forests of the graph of fixed sizes. Our first goal is to extend and popularize this story to other root systems, which on the combinatorial side is encoded by signed graphs analogously to the work by Greene and Zaslavsky (1983). We compute the Ehrhart polynomial of the acyclotope in the signed case, and we give a matroid-dual construction, giving rise to tocyclotopes, and compute their Ehrhart polynomials. Applying the same duality construction to a general integral matrix gives rise to a lattice Gale zonotope, whose face structure was studies by McMullen (1971) and whose duality nature is a special instance of D'Adderio--Moci's arithmetic matroids. We describe its Ehrhart polynomials in terms of the given matrix.
Hyperplane Arrangements in the Grassmannian
The Euler characteristic of a very affine variety encodes the algebraic complexity of solving likelihood (or scattering) equations on this variety. We study this quantity for the Grassmannian with $d$ hyperplane sections removed. We provide a combinatorial formula, and explain how to compute this Euler characteristic in practice, both symbolically and numerically. Our particular focus is on generic hyperplane sections and on Schubert divisors. We also consider special Schubert arrangements relevant for physics. We study both the complex and the real case.
Coxeter groups and Billey-Postnikov decompositions
In this chapter, we give an overview of Billey-Postnikov (BP) decompositions which have become an important tool for understanding the geometry and combinatorics of Schubert varieties. BP decompositions are factorizations of Coxeter group elements with many nice properties in relation to Bruhat partial order. They have played an important role in the classification and enumeration of smooth Schubert varieties. They have also been used in the study of inversion hyperplane arrangements and permutation pattern avoidance. We survey many of these applications.
Combinatorial invariants of finite metric spaces and the Wasserstein arrangement
In 2010, Vershik proposed a new combinatorial invariant of metric spaces given by a class of polytopes that arise in the theory of optimal transport and are called ``Wasserstein polytopes'' or ``Kantorovich-Rubinstein polytopes'' in the literature. Answering a question posed by Vershik, we describe the stratification of the metric cone induced by the combinatorial type of these polytopes through a hyperplane arrangement. Moreover, we study its relationships with the stratification by combinatorial type of the injective hull (i.e., the tight span) and, in particular, with certain types of metrics arising in phylogenetic analysis. We also compute enumerative invariants in the case of metrics on up to six points.
A topological proof of Terao's generalized Arrow's Impossibility Theorem
In Terao [24], Hiroaki Terao defined and studied "admissible map", which is a generalization of "social welfare function" in the context of hyperplane arrangements. Using this, he proved a generalized Arrow's Impossibility Theorem using combinatorial arguments. This paper provides another proof of this generalized Arrow's Impossibility Theorem, using the idea of algebraic topology.
Rational points of fixed denominator in real toric arrangements
We give a sufficient condition on a positive integer $m$ for every stratum of a given real toric hyperplane arrangement to contain a rational point of denominator $m$. As a consequence, we give a sufficient condition on $m$ for the degree $m$ Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf on a smooth toric variety to contain all possible summands in the Picard group.
Deformed Intersections of Half-spaces
This paper is devoted to the classification problems concerning extended deformations of convex polyhedra and real hyperplane arrangements in the following senses: combinatorial equivalence of face posets, normal equivalence on normal fans of convex polyhedra, and sign equivalence on half-spaces. The extended deformations of convex polyhedra arise from parallel translations of given half-spaces and hyperplanes, whose normal vectors give rise to the so-called ``derived arrangement'' proposed by Rota as well as Crapo in different forms. We show that two extended deformations of convex polyhedra are normally (combinatorially, as a consequence) equivalent if they are parameterized by the same open face of the derived arrangement. Note that these extended deformations are based on parallel translations of the given hyperplanes. It allows us to study three deformations of real hyperplane arrangements: parallel translations, conings, and elementary lifts, whose configuration spaces are parameterized by open faces of the derived arrangement. Consequently, it gives a characterization of the normal, combinatorial, and sign equivalences of those three deformations via the derived arrangement. Additionally, the relationships among these three equivalence relations are discussed, and several new descriptions of real derived arrangements associated with faces and sign vectors of real hyperplane arrangements are provided.
Two Bijections on NBC Subsets
We establish two explicit bijections: from acyclic reorientations of an oriented matroid to no broken circuit (NBC) subsets of its underlying matroid, and from regions of a real hyperplane arrangement to its affine NBC subsets.
Topology of hyperplane arrangements via real structure
This note is a survey on the topology of hyperplane arrangements. We mainly focus on the relationship between topology and the real structure, such as adjacent relations of chambers and stratifications related to real structures.
An Intersection Matrix for Affine Hyperplane Arrangements
For a real affine hyperplane arrangement, we define an integer intersection matrix with a natural $q$-deformation related to the intersections of bounded chambers of the arrangement. By connecting the integer matrix to a bilinear form of Schechtman-Varchenko, we show that there is a closed formula for its determinant that only depends on the combinatorics of the underlying matroid. We conjecture an analogous formula for its $q$-deformation. Our work also applies more generally in the setting of affine oriented matroids.
Additionally, we give a representation-theoretic interpretation of our $q$-intersection matrix using Braden-Licata-Proudfoot-Websters's hypertoric category $\mathcal{O}$ (or more generally Kowalenko-Mautner's category $\mathcal{O}$ for oriented matroid programs). This paper is part of a broader program to categorify matroidal Schur algebras defined by Braden-Mautner.
Cokernels of the Euler restriction map of logarithmic derivation modules
There are two restriction maps of the logarithmic modules of plane arrangements in a three dimensional vector space. One is the Euler restriction and the other is the Ziegler restriction. The dimension of the cokernel of the Ziegler restriction map of logarithmic derivation modules has been well-studied for the freeness of hyperplane arrangements after Yoshinaga's celebrated criterion for freeness, which connects the second Betti number and the splitting type (exponents). However, though the Euler restriction has a longer history than the Ziegler restriction, the cokernel and its dimension of the Euler restriction have not been studied at all.
The aim of this article is to study the cokernel and dimension of the Euler restriction maps in terms of combinatorics, more explicitly, the characteristic polynomial. We give an upper bound of that cokernel, and show the formula for that if the arrangement is free.
A construction of homotopically non-trivial embedded spheres for hyperplane arrangements
We introduce the notion of locally consistent system of half-spaces for a real hyperplane arrangement. We embed a sphere in the complexified complement by shifting the real unit sphere into the imaginary direction indicated by the half-spaces. We then prove that the sphere is homotopically trivial if and only if the system of half-spaces is globally consistent. To prove its non-triviality, we compute the twisted intersection number of the sphere with a specific, explicitly constructed twisted Borel-Moore cycle.
Characteristic quasi-polynomials of deletions of Shi arrangements of type B and their period collapse
Characteristic quasi-polynomials are the enumerative functions counting the number of elements in the complement of hyperplane arrangements modulo positive integers. A notable phenomenon in this context is period collapse, where the quasi-polynomial reduces to a polynomial or has a smaller period than the lcm period. In this paper, we compute the characteristic quasi-polynomials of the restriction of the Shi arrangement of type B by one given hyperplane. As a corollary, we completely determine whether period collapse occurs in the characteristic quasi-polynomial of the deletion of the Shi arrangement of type B. This implies the solution for the conjecture posed by Higashitani, Tran and Yoshinaga in this case.
Tropical hyperplane arrangements and combinatorial mutations of the matching field polytopes of Grassmannians
A sequence of combinatorial mutations of matching field polytopes preserves the property of giving rise to a toric degeneration of Grassmannians. In this paper, we find a way to check that two matching field polytopes are combinatorial mutation equivalence using tropical hyperplane arrangements, ``literally at a glance". Our way can prove that block diagonal matching fields are combinatorial mutations equivalent to diagonal matching fields. This is one of main results in \cite{clarke2021combinatorial}. Our result can be regarded as a generalization of that result.
Representation stability in the intrinsic hyperplane arrangements associated to irreducible representations of the symmetric-groups
Some of the most classically relevant Hyperplane arrangements are the Braid Arrangements $B_n$ and their associated compliment spaces $\mathcal{F}_n$. In their recent work, Tsilevich, Vershik, and Yuzvinsky construct what they refer to as the intrinsic hyperplane arrangement within any irreducible representation of the symmetric group that generalize the classical braid arrangements. Through examples it is also shown that the associated compliment spaces to these intrinsic arrangements display behaviors far removed from $\mathcal{F}_n$. In this work we study the intrinsic hyperplane arrangements of irreducible representations of the symmetric group from the perspective of representation stability. This work is both theoretical, proving representation stability theorems for hyperplane complements, as well as statistical, examining the outputs of a number of simulations designed to enumerate flats.
Degeneration in discriminantal arrangements

Discriminantal arrangements are hyperplane arrangements, which are generalized braid ones. They are constructed from given hyperplane arrangements, but their combinatorics are not invariant under combinatorial equivalence. However, it is known that the combinatorics of the discriminantal arrangement are constant on a Zariski open set of the space of hyperplane arrangements. In the present paper, we introduce non-very generic varieties in the space of hyperplane arrangements to classify discriminantal arrangements and show that the Zariski open set is the complement of non-very generic varieties. We study their basic properties and construction and provide examples, including infinite families of non-very generic varieties. In particular, the construction we call degeneration is a powerful tool for constructing non-very generic varieties. As an application, we provide lists of non-very generic varieties for spaces of small line arrangements.
Superspace coinvariants and hyperplane arrangements
Let $Ω$ be the {\em superspace ring} of polynomial-valued differential forms on affine $n$-space. The natural action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on $n$-space induces an action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on $Ω$. The {\em superspace coinvariant ring} is the quotient $SR$ of $Ω$ by the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term. We give the first explicit basis of $SR$, proving a conjecture of Sagan and Swanson. Our techniques use the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We relate $SR$ to instances of the Solomon-Terao algebras of Abe-Maeno-Murai-Numata and use exact sequences relating the derivation modules of certain `southwest closed' arrangements to obtain the desired basis of $SR$.
Bisecting masses with families of parallel hyperplanes
We prove a common generalization to several mass partition results using hyperplane arrangements to split $\mathbb{R}^d$ into two sets. Our main result implies the ham-sandwich theorem, the necklace splitting theorem for two thieves, a theorem about chessboard splittings with hyperplanes with fixed directions, and all known cases of Langerman's conjecture about equipartitions with $n$ hyperplanes.
Our main result also confirms an infinite number of previously unknown cases of the following conjecture of Takahashi and Soberón:
For any $d+k-1$ measures in $\mathbb{R}^d$, there exist an arrangement of $k$ parallel hyperplanes that bisects each of the measures.
The general result follows from the case of measures that are supported on a finite set with an odd number of points. The proof for this case is inspired by ideas of differential and algebraic topology, but it is a completely elementary parity argument.
