Independence number of graphs with a prescribed number of cliques
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the following problem posed by Erdos in 1962. Suppose that $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph where the number of $s$-cliques in $G$ is $t$. How small can the independence number of $G$ be? Our main result suggests that for fixed $s$, the smallest possible independence number undergoes a transition at $t=n^{s/2+o(1)}$. In the case of triangles ($s=3$) we obtain the following result which is sharp apart from constant factors and generalizes basic results in Ramsey theory: there exists $c>0$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with $t$ triangles has independence number at least $$c \cdot \min\left\{ \sqrt {n \log n}\, , \, \frac{n}{t^{1/3}} \left(\log \frac{n}{ t^{1/3}}\right)^{2/3} \right\}.$$
On Generalized Edge Corona Product of Graphs
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $m$ edges and $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq m$ be simple graphs too. The generalized edge corona product of graphs $G$ and $H_1, ..., H_m$, denoted by $G \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$, is obtained by taking one copy of graphs $G$, $H_1, ..., H_m$ and joining two end vertices of $i$-th edge of $G$ to every vertex of $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq m$. In this paper, some results regarding the $k$-distance chromatic number of Generalized edge corona product of graphs are presented. Also, as a consequence of our results, we compute this invariant for the graphs $K_n \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$, $T\diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$ and $K_{m,n} \diamond (H_1, ..., H_m)$. Moreover, the domination set, domination number and the independence number of any connected graph $G$ and arbitrary graphs $H_i$, $1\leq i \leq |E(G)|$, are evaluated under generalized edge corona operation.

On the Saxl graph of a permutation group
Published in Math. Proc. Camb. Phil. Soc. 168 (2020) 219-248 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$. A subset of $Ω$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabiliser in $G$ is trivial. In this paper we introduce and study an associated graph $Σ(G)$, which we call the Saxl graph of $G$. The vertices of $Σ(G)$ are the points of $Ω$, and two vertices are adjacent if they form a base for $G$. This graph encodes some interesting properties of the permutation group. We investigate the connectivity of $Σ(G)$ for a finite transitive group $G$, as well as its diameter, Hamiltonicity, clique and independence numbers, and we present several open problems. For instance, we conjecture that if $G$ is a primitive group with a base of size $2$, then the diameter of $Σ(G)$ is at most $2$. Using a probabilistic approach, we establish the conjecture for some families of almost simple groups. For example, the conjecture holds when $G=S_n$ or $A_n$ (with $n>12$) and the point stabiliser of $G$ is a primitive subgroup. In contrast, we can construct imprimitive groups whose Saxl graph is disconnected with arbitrarily many connected components, or connected with arbitrarily large diameter.

Packing nearly optimal Ramsey R(3,t) graphs
Published in Combinatorica 40 (2020), 63-103 • View PublicationBIB
In 1995 Kim famously proved the Ramsey bound R(3,t) \ge c t^2/\log t by constructing an n-vertex graph that is triangle-free and has independence number at most C \sqrt{n \log n}. We extend this celebrated result, which is best possible up to the value of the constants, by approximately decomposing the complete graph K_n into a packing of such nearly optimal Ramsey R(3,t) graphs. More precisely, for any ε>0 we find an edge-disjoint collection (G_i)_i of n-vertex graphs G_i \subseteq K_n such that (a) each G_i is triangle-free and has independence number at most C_ε\sqrt{n \log n}, and (b) the union of all the G_i contains at least (1-ε)\binom{n}{2} edges. Our algorithmic proof proceeds by sequentially choosing the graphs G_i via a semi-random (i.e., Rodl nibble type) variation of the triangle-free process. As an application, we prove a conjecture in Ramsey theory by Fox, Grinshpun, Liebenau, Person, and Szabo (concerning a Ramsey-type parameter introduced by Burr, Erdos, Lovasz in 1976). Namely, denoting by s_r(H) the smallest minimum degree of r-Ramsey minimal graphs for H, we close the existing logarithmic gap for H=K_3 and establish that s_r(K_3) = Θ(r^2 \log r).
Chromatic Number and Dichromatic Polynomial of Digraphs
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$. It is well-known that $α(G)\geq \sum_{i=1}^n \frac{1}{1+d_i}$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$ and $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ is the degree sequence of $G$. We extend this result to digraphs by showing that if $D$ is a digraph with $n$ vertices, then $ α(D)\geq \sum_{i=1}^n \left( \frac{1}{1+d_i^+} + \frac{1}{1+d_i^-} - \frac{1}{1+d_i}\right)$, where $α(D)$ is the maximum size of an acyclic vertex set of $D$. Golowich proved that for any digraph $D$, $χ(D)\leq \lceil \frac{4k}{5} \rceil+2$, where $k=max(Δ^+(D),Δ^-(D))$. We give a short and simple proof for this result. Next, we investigate the chromatic number of tournaments and determine the unique tournament such that for every integer $k>1$, the number of proper $k$-colorings of that tournament is maximum among all strongly connected tournaments with the same number of vertices. Also, we find the chromatic polynomial of the strongly connected tournament with the minimum number of cycles.

Vertex covering with monochromatic pieces of few colours
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1995, Erdős and Gyárfás proved that in every $2$-colouring of the edges of $K_n$, there is a vertex cover by $2\sqrt{n}$ monochromatic paths of the same colour, which is optimal up to a constant factor. The main goal of this paper is to study the natural multi-colour generalization of this problem: given two positive integers $r,s$, what is the smallest number $\text{pc}_{r,s}(K_n)$ such that in every colouring of the edges of $K_n$ with $r$ colours, there exists a vertex cover of $K_n$ by $\text{pc}_{r,s}(K_n)$ monochromatic paths using altogether at most $s$ different colours? For fixed integers $r>s$ and as $n\to\infty$, we prove that $\text{pc}_{r,s}(K_n) = Θ(n^{1/χ})$, where $χ=\max{\{1,2+2s-r\}}$ is the chromatic number of the Kneser gr aph $\text{KG}(r,r-s)$. More generally, if one replaces $K_n$ by an arbitrary $n$-vertex graph with fixed independence number $α$, then we have $\text{pc}_{r,s}(G) = O(n^{1/χ})$, where this time around $χ$ is the chromatic number of the Kneser hypergraph $\text{KG}^{(α+1)}(r,r-s)$. This result is tight in the sense that there exist graphs with independence number $α$ for which $\text{pc}_{r,s}(G) = Ω(n^{1/χ})$. This is in sharp contrast to the case $r=s$, where it follows from a result of Sárközy (2012) that $\text{pc}_{r,r}(G)$ depends only on $r$ and $α$, but not on the number of vertices. We obtain similar results for the situation where instead of using paths, one wants to cover a graph with bounded independence number by monochromatic cycles, or a complete graph by monochromatic $d$-regular graphs.

A Note on Lower Bounds for Induced Ramsey Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that a graph $F$ strongly arrows a pair of graphs $(G,H)$ if any 2-colouring of its edges with red and blue leads to either a red $G$ or a blue $H$ appearing as induced subgraphs of $F$. The induced Ramsey number, $IR(G,H)$ is defined as the minimum number of vertices of a graph $F$ which strongly arrows a pair $(G,H)$. We will consider two aspects of induced Ramsey numbers. Firstly there will be shown that the lower bound of the induced Ramsey number for a connected graph $G$ with independence number $α$ and a graph $H$ with clique number $ω$ roughly $\frac{ω^2α}{2}$. This bounds is sharp. Moreover we discuss also the case when $G$ is not connected providing also a sharp lower bound which is linear in both parameters

A computerised classification of some almost minimal triangle-free Ramsey graphs
A graph $G$ is called a $(3,j;n)$-minimal Ramsey graph if it has the least amount of edges, $e(3,j;n)$, given that $G$ is triangle-free, the independence number $α(G) < j$ and that $G$ has $n$ vertices. Triangle-free graphs $G$ with $α(G) < j$ and where $e(G) - e(3,j;n)$ is small are said to be almost minimal Ramsey graphs. We look at a construction of some almost minimal Ramsey graphs, called $H_{13}$-patterned graphs. We make computer calculations of the number of almost minimal Ramsey triangle-free graphs that are $H_{13}$-patterned. The results of these calculations indicate that many of these graphs are in fact $H_{13}$-patterned. In particular, all but one of the connected $(3,j;n)$-minimal Ramsey graphs for $j \leq 9$ are indeed $H_{13}$-patterned.
On the Clar Number of Benzenoid Graphs
Published in MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 80 (2018) 173-188 • Search Publication
A Clar set of a benzenoid graph $B$ is a maximum set of independent alternating hexagons over all perfect matchings of $B$. The Clar number of $B$, denoted by ${\rm Cl}(B)$, is the number of hexagons in a Clar set for $B$. In this paper, we first prove some results on the independence number of subcubic trees to study the Clar number of catacondensed benzenoid graphs. As the main result of the paper we prove an upper bound for the Clar number of catacondensed benzenoid graphs and characterize the graphs that attain this bound. More precisely, it is shown that for a catacondensed benzenoid graph $B$ with $n$ hexagons ${\rm Cl}(B) \leq [(2n+1)/3]$.

Extremal $k$-forcing sets in oriented graphs
This article studies the \emph{$k$-forcing number} for oriented graphs, generalizing both the \emph{zero forcing number} for directed graphs and the $k$-forcing number for simple graphs. In particular, given a simple graph $G$, we introduce the maximum (minimum) oriented $k$-forcing number, denoted $\MOF_k(G)$ ($\mof_k(G)$), which is the largest (smallest) $k$-forcing number among all possible orientations of $G$. These new ideas are compared to known graph invariants and it is shown that, among other things, $\mof(G)$ equals the path covering number of $G$ while $\MOF_k(G)$ is greater than or equal to the independence number of $G$ -- with equality holding if $G$ is a tree or if $k$ is at least the maximum degree of $G$. Along the way, we also show that many recent results about $k$-forcing number can be modified for oriented graphs.

Maximum independent sets near the upper bound
Published • View PublicationBIB
The size of a largest independent set of vertices in a given graph $G$ is denoted by $α(G)$ and is called its independence number (or stability number). Given a graph $G$ and an integer $K,$ it is NP-complete to decide whether $α(G) \geq K.$ An upper bound for the independence number $α(G)$ of a given graph $G$ with $n$ vertices and $m $ edges is given by $α(G) \leq p:=\lfloor\frac{1}{2} + \sqrt{\frac{1}{4} + n^2 - n - 2m}\rfloor.$ In this paper we will consider maximum independent sets near this upper bound. Our main result is the following: There exists an algorithm with time complexity $O(n^2)$ that, given as an input a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges, $p:=\lfloor\frac{1}{2} + \sqrt{\frac{1}{4} + n^2 - n - 2m}\rfloor,$ and an integer $k \geq 0$ with $p \geq 2k+1,$ returns an induced subgraph $G_{p,k}$ of $G$ with $n_0 \leq p+2k+1$ vertices such that $α(G) \leq p-k$ if and only if $α(G_{p,k}) \leq p-k.$ Furthermore, we will show that we can decide in time $O(1.2738^{3k} + kn)$ whether $α(G_{p,k}) \leq p-k.$
Disjoint Dominating Sets with a Perfect Matching
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider dominating sets $D$ and $D'$ such that $D$ and $D'$ are disjoint and there exists a perfect matching between them. Let $DD_{\textrm{m}}(G)$ denote the cardinality of smallest such sets $D, D'$ in $G$ (provided they exist, otherwise $DD_{\textrm{m}}(G) = \infty$). This concept was introduced in [Klostermeyer et al., Theory and Application of Graphs, 2017] in the context of studying a certain graph protection problem. We characterize the trees $T$ for which $DD_{\textrm{m}}(T)$ equals a certain graph protection parameter and for which $DD_{\textrm{m}}(T) = α(T)$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. We also further study this parameter in graph products, e.g., by giving bounds for grid graphs, and in graphs of small independence number.
The Graph of Critical Pairs of a Crown
Published • View PublicationBIB
There is a natural way to associate with a poset $P$ a hypergraph $H$, called the hypergraph of critical pairs, so that the dimension of $P$ is exactly equal to the chromatic number of $H$. The edges of $H$ have variable sizes, but it is of interest to consider the graph $G$ formed by the edges of $H$ that have size~2. The chromatic number of $G$ is less than or equal to the dimension of $P$ and the difference between the two values can be arbitrarily large. Nevertheless, there are important instances where the two parameters are the same, and we study one of these in this paper. Our focus is on a family $\{S_n^k:n\ge 3, k\ge 0\}$ of height two posets called crowns. We show that the chromatic number of the graph $G_n^k$ of critical pairs of the crown $S_n^k$ is the same as the dimension of $S_n^k$, which is known to be $\lceil 2(n+k)/(k+2)\rceil$. In fact, this theorem follows as an immediate corollary to the stronger result: The independence number of $G_n^k$ is $(k+1)(k+2)/2$. We obtain this theorem as part of a comprehensive analysis of independent sets in $G_n^k$ including the determination of the second largest size among the maximal independent sets, both the reversible and non-reversible types.

Cubic graphs with small independence ratio
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $i(r,g)$ denote the infimum of the ratio $\frac{α(G)}{|V(G)|}$ over the $r$-regular graphs of girth at least $g$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$, and let $i(r,\infty) := \lim\limits_{g \to \infty} i(r,g)$. Recently, several new lower bounds of $i(3,\infty)$ were obtained. In particular, Hoppen and Wormald showed in 2015 that $i(3, \infty) \ge 0.4375$, and Csóka improved it to $i(3,\infty) \ge 0.44533$ in 2016. Bollobás proved the upper bound $i(3,\infty) < \frac{6}{13}$ in 1981, and McKay improved it to $i(3,\infty) < 0.45537$ in 1987. There were no improvements since then. In this paper, we improve the upper bound to $i(3,\infty) \le 0.454.$

Spectrum of signless 1-Laplacian on simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the signless 1-Laplacians and the dual Cheeger constants on simplicial complexes. The connection of its spectrum to the combinatorial properties like independence number, chromatic number and dual Cheeger constant is investigated. Our estimates can be comparable to Hoffman's bounds in virtue of Laplacian on simplicial complexes. An interesting inequality relating multiplicity of the largest eigenvalue, independence number and chromatic number are provided, which could be regarded as a variant version of Lovasz sandwich theorem. Also, the behavior of the operator under the topological operations of wedge and duplication of motifs is studied. The Courant nodal domain theorem in spectral theory is extended to the case of signless 1-Laplacian on complexes.

Null Decomposition of Trees

Let $T$ be a tree, we show that the null space of the adjacency matrix of $T$ has relevant information about the structure of $T$. We introduce the Null Decomposition of trees, and use it in order to get formulas for independence number and matching number of a tree. We also prove that the number of maximum matchings in a tree is related to the null decomposition.
Domination and fractional domination in digraphs

In this paper, we investigate the relation between the (fractional) domination number of a digraph $G$ and the independence number of its underlying graph, denoted by $α(G)$. More precisely, we prove that every digraph $G$ has fractional domination number at most $2α(G)$, and every directed triangle-free digraph $G$ has domination number at most $α(G)\cdot α(G)!$. The first bound is sharp.

Nowhere-zero $3$-flow of graphs with small independence number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tutte's $3$-flow conjecture states that every $4$-edge-connected graph admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. In this paper, we characterize all graphs with independence number at most $4$ that admit a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. The characterization of $3$-flow verifies Tutte's $3$-flow conjecture for graphs with independence number at most $4$ and with order at least $21$. In addition, we prove that every odd-$5$-edge-connected graph with independence number at most $3$ admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. To obtain these results, we introduce a new reduction method to handle odd wheels.
Packing chromatic number versus chromatic and clique number
The packing chromatic number $χ_ρ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets $V_i$, $i\in [k]$, where each $V_i$ is an $i$-packing. In this paper, we investigate for a given triple $(a,b,c)$ of positive integers whether there exists a graph $G$ such that $ω(G) = a$, $χ(G) = b$, and $χ_ρ(G) = c$. If so, we say that $(a, b, c)$ is realizable. It is proved that $b=c\ge 3$ implies $a=b$, and that triples $(2,k,k+1)$ and $(2,k,k+2)$ are not realizable as soon as $k\ge 4$. Some of the obtained results are deduced from the bounds proved on the packing chromatic number of the Mycielskian. Moreover, a formula for the independence number of the Mycielskian is given. A lower bound on $χ_ρ(G)$ in terms of $Δ(G)$ and $α(G)$ is also proved.
Contraction and Deletion Blockers for Perfect Graphs and $H$-free Graphs

We study the following problem: for given integers $d$, $k$ and graph $G$, can we reduce some fixed graph parameter $π$ of $G$ by at least $d$ via at most $k$ graph operations from some fixed set $S$? As parameters we take the chromatic number $χ$, clique number $ω$ and independence number $α$, and as operations we choose the edge contraction ec and vertex deletion vd. We determine the complexity of this problem for $S=\{\mbox{ec}\}$ and $S=\{\mbox{vd}\}$ and $π\in \{χ,ω,α\}$ for a number of subclasses of perfect graphs. We use these results to determine the complexity of the problem for $S=\{\mbox{ec}\}$ and $S=\{\mbox{vd}\}$ and $π\in \{χ,ω,α\}$ restricted to $H$-free graphs.
