On the Number of Circuit-cocircuit Reversal Classes of an Oriented Matroid

The first author introduced the circuit-cocircuit reversal system of an oriented matroid, and showed that when the underlying matroid is regular, the cardinalities of such system and its variations are equal to special evaluations of the Tutte polynomial (e.g., the total number of circuit-cocircuit reversal classes equals $t(M;1,1)$, the number of bases of the matroid). By relating these classes to activity classes studied by the first author and Las Vergnas, we give an alternative proof of the above results and a proof of the converse statements that these equalities fail whenever the underlying matroid is not regular. Hence we extend the above results to an equivalence of matroidal properties, thereby giving a new characterization of regular matroids.

The Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice polytope $P$ encodes information about the number of integer lattice points in positive integral dilates of $P$. The $h^\ast$-polynomial of $P$ is the numerator polynomial of the generating function of its Ehrhart polynomial. A zonotope is any projection of a higher dimensional cube. We give a combinatorial description of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a lattice zonotope in terms of refined descent statistics of permutations and prove that the $h^\ast$-polynomial of every lattice zonotope has only real roots and therefore unimodal coefficients. Furthermore, we present a closed formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a zonotope in matroidal terms which is analogous to a result by Stanley (1991) on the Ehrhart polynomial. Our results hold not only for $h^\ast$-polynomials but carry over to general combinatorial positive valuations. Moreover, we give a complete description of the convex hull of all $h^\ast$-polynomials of zonotopes in a given dimension: it is a simplicial cone spanned by refined Eulerian polynomials.

Fix a principal ideal domain $k$. In this article we associate to a (weighted) matroid $M$ a quasi-hereditary algebra $R(M)$ defined over $k$ such that matroid duality corresponds to Ringel duality of quasi-hereditary algebras. The representation theory of these algebras is related to work of Schechtman-Varchenko and Brylawski-Varchenko. In characteristic zero, our algebras are also closely related to work of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Denham.
Supermodularity in Unweighted Graph Optimization II: Matroidal Term Rank Augmentation
Ryser's max term rank formula with graph theoretic terminology is equivalent to a characterization of degree sequences of simple bipartite graphs with matching number at least $\ell$. In a previous paper by the authors, a generalization was developed for the case when the degrees are constrained by upper and lower bounds. Here two other extensions of Ryser's theorem are discussed. The first one is a matroidal model, while the second one settles the augmentation version. In fact, the two directions shall be integrated into one single framework.
A Tverberg type theorem for matroids
Let b(M) denote the maximal number of disjoint bases in a matroid M. It is shown that if M is a matroid of rank d+1, then for any continuous map f from the matroidal complex M into the d-dimensional Euclidean space there exist t \geq \sqrt{b(M)}/4 disjoint independent sets σ_1,\ldots,σ_t \in M such that \bigcap_{i=1}^t f(σ_i) \neq \emptyset.

Let $M$ and $N$ be two matroids on the same ground set. We generalize results of Drisko and Chapell by showing that any $2n-1$ sets of size $n$ in $M \cap N$ have a rainbow set of size $n$ in $M \cap N$.
On the tractability of some natural packing, covering and partitioning problems
In this paper we fix 7 types of undirected graphs: paths, paths with prescribed endvertices, circuits, forests, spanning trees, (not necessarily spanning) trees and cuts. Given an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$ and two "object types" $\mathrm{A}$ and $\mathrm{B}$ chosen from the alternatives above, we consider the following questions. \textbf{Packing problem:} can we find an object of type $\mathrm{A}$ and one of type $\mathrm{B}$ in the edge set $E$ of $G$, so that they are edge-disjoint? \textbf{Partitioning problem:} can we partition $E$ into an object of type $\mathrm{A}$ and one of type $\mathrm{B}$? \textbf{Covering problem:} can we cover $E$ with an object of type $\mathrm{A}$, and an object of type $\mathrm{B}$? This framework includes 44 natural graph theoretic questions. Some of these problems were well-known before, for example covering the edge-set of a graph with two spanning trees, or finding an $s$-$t$ path $P$ and an $s'$-$t'$ path $P'$ that are edge-disjoint. However, many others were not, for example can we find an $s$-$t$ path $P\subseteq E $ and a spanning tree $T\subseteq E$ that are edge-disjoint? Most of these previously unknown problems turned out to be NP-complete, many of them even in planar graphs. This paper determines the status of these 44 problems. For the NP-complete problems we also investigate the planar version, for the polynomial problems we consider the matroidal generalization (wherever this makes sense).
On certain equidimensional polymatroidal ideals

The class of equidimensional polymatroidal ideals are studied. In particular, we show that an unmixed polymatroidal ideal is connected in codimension one if and only if it is Cohen-Macaulay. Especially a matroidal ideal is connected in codimension one precisely when it is a squarefree Veronese ideal. As a consequence we indicate that for polymatroidal ideals, the Serre's condition $(S_n)$ for some $n\geq 2$ is equivalent to Cohen-Macaulay property. We also give a classification of generalized Cohen-Macaulay polymatroidal ideals.
Matroids, Delta-matroids and Embedded Graphs

Matroid theory is often thought of as a generalization of graph theory. In this paper we propose an analogous correspondence between embedded graphs and delta-matroids. We show that delta-matroids arise as the natural extension of graphic matroids to the setting of embedded graphs. We show that various basic ribbon graph operations and concepts have delta-matroid analogues, and illustrate how the connections between embedded graphs and delta-matroids can be exploited. Also, in direct analogy with the fact that The Tutte polynomial is matroidal, we show that several polynomials of embedded graphs from the literature, including the Las Vergnas, Bollabas-Riordan and Krushkal polynomials, are in fact delta-matroidal.
Algebraic matroids with graph symmetry
This paper studies the properties of two kinds of matroids: (a) algebraic matroids and (b) finite and infinite matroids whose ground set have some canonical symmetry, for example row and column symmetry and transposition symmetry.
For (a) algebraic matroids, we expose cryptomorphisms making them accessible to techniques from commutative algebra. This allows us to introduce for each circuit in an algebraic matroid an invariant called circuit polynomial, generalizing the minimal poly- nomial in classical Galois theory, and studying the matroid structure with multivariate methods.
For (b) matroids with symmetries we introduce combinatorial invariants capturing structural properties of the rank function and its limit behavior, and obtain proofs which are purely combinatorial and do not assume algebraicity of the matroid; these imply and generalize known results in some specific cases where the matroid is also algebraic. These results are motivated by, and readily applicable to framework rigidity, low-rank matrix completion and determinantal varieties, which lie in the intersection of (a) and (b) where additional results can be derived. We study the corresponding matroids and their associated invariants, and for selected cases, we characterize the matroidal structure and the circuit polynomials completely.

Herzog and Takayama constructed explicit resolutions for the class of so called ideals with a regular linear quotient. This class contains all matroidal and stable ideals. The resolutions of matroidal and stable ideals are known to be cellular. In this note we show that the Herzog--Takayama resolution is also cellular.
On symmetry groups of oriented matroids
Symmetries of geometric structures such as hyperplane arrangements, point configurations and polytopes have been studied extensively for a long time. However, symmetries of oriented matroids, a common combinatorial abstraction of them, are not understood well. In this paper, we aim to obtain a better understanding of symmetries of oriented matroids. First, we put focus on symmetries of matroids, and give a general construction that generates a $3$-dimensional point configuration with a matroidal symmetry that cannot be realized as a geometric symmetry. The construction is based on the observation that every non-trivial rotation in the $2$-dimensional Euclidean space has a unique fixed point but that there is no corresponding property for matroids. The construction suggests that the lack of the fixed point theorem generates a big gap between matroidal symmetries and geometric symmetries of point configurations. Motivated by this insight, we study fixed-point properties for symmetry groups of oriented matroids. For rotational symmetries of oriented matroids, we prove a useful property, which corresponds to the uniqueness of fixed points (in the rank $3$ case). Using it, we classify rotational and full symmetry groups of simple oriented matroids of rank $3$. In addition, we define fixed-point-admitting (FPA) property for subgroups of symmetry groups of oriented matroids, and make classification of rotational symmetry groups with FPA property of simple acyclic oriented matroids of rank $4$. We conjecture that the symmetry group of every acyclic simple oriented matroid has FPA property.

We suggest and explore a matroidal version of the Brualdi - Ryser conjecture about Latin squares. We prove that any $n\times n$ matrix, whose rows and columns are bases of a matroid, has an independent partial transversal of length $\lceil2n/3\rceil$. We show that for any $n$, there exists such a matrix with a maximal independent partial transversal of length at most $n-1$.
Henneberg constructions and covers of cone-Laman graphs
We give Henneberg-type constructions for three families of sparse colored graphs arising in the rigidity theory of periodic and other forced symmetric frameworks. The proof method, which works with Laman-sparse finite covers of colored graphs highlights the connection between these sparse colored families and the well-studied matroidal (k, l)-sparse families.
Infinite matroid union
We consider the problem of determining whether the union of two infinite matroids is a matroid. We introduce a superclass of the finitary matroids, the nearly finitary matroids, and prove that the union of two nearly finitary matroids is a nearly finitary matroid.
On the other hand, we prove that the union of two arbitrary infinite matroids is not necessarily a matroid. Indeed, we show (under a weak additional assumption) that the nearly finitary matroids are essentially the largest class of matroids for which one can have a union theorem.
We then extend the base packing theorem for finite matroids to finite families of co-finitary matroids. This, in turn, yields a matroidal proof for the tree-packing results for infinite graphs due to Diestel and Tutte.
The adjacency matroid of a graph

If $G$ is a looped graph, then its adjacency matrix represents a binary matroid $M_{A}(G)$ on $V(G)$. $M_{A}(G)$ may be obtained from the delta-matroid represented by the adjacency matrix of $G$, but $M_{A}(G)$ is less sensitive to the structure of $G$. Jaeger proved that every binary matroid is $M_{A}(G)$ for some $G$ [Ann. Discrete Math. 17 (1983), 371-376].
The relationship between the matroidal structure of $M_{A}(G)$ and the graphical structure of $G$ has many interesting features. For instance, the matroid minors $M_{A}(G)-v$ and $M_{A}(G)/v$ are both of the form $M_{A}(G^{\prime}-v)$ where $G^{\prime}$ may be obtained from $G$ using local complementation. In addition, matroidal considerations lead to a principal vertex tripartition, distinct from the principal edge tripartition of Rosenstiehl and Read [Ann. Discrete Math. 3 (1978), 195-226]. Several of these results are given two very different proofs, the first involving linear algebra and the second involving set systems or delta-matroids. Also, the Tutte polynomials of the adjacency matroids of $G$ and its full subgraphs are closely connected to the interlace polynomial of Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin [Combinatorica 24 (2004), 567-584].

We compare two rational polyhedral admissible decompositions of the cone of positive definite quadratic forms: the perfect cone decomposition and the 2nd Voronoi decomposition. We determine which cones belong to both the decompositions, thus providing a positive answer to a conjecture of V. Alexeev and A. Brunyate. As an application, we compare the two associated toroidal compactifications of the moduli space of principal polarized abelian varieties: the perfect cone compactification and the 2nd Voronoi compactification.
Dual trees must share their ends

We extend to infinite graphs the matroidal characterization of finite graph duality, that two graphs are dual iff they have complementary spanning trees in some common edge set. The naive infinite analogue of this fails.
The key in an infinite setting is that dual trees must share between them not only the edges of their host graphs but also their ends: the statement that a set of edges is acyclic and connects all the vertices in one of the graphs iff the remaining edges do the same in its dual will hold only once each of the two graphs' common ends has been assigned to one graph but not the other, and 'cycle' and 'connected' are interpreted topologically in the space containing the respective edges and precisely the ends thus assigned.
This property characterizes graph duality: if, conversely, the spanning trees of two infinite graphs are complementary in this end-sharing way, the graphs form a dual pair.

We provide a general, unified, framework for external zonotopal algebra. The approach is critically based on employing simultaneously the two dual algebraic constructs and invokes the underlying matroidal and geometric structures in an essential way. This general theory makes zonotopal algebra an applicable tool for a larger class of polytopes.
