Unit interval parking functions and the $r$-Fubini numbers
We recall that unit interval parking functions of length $n$ are a subset of parking functions in which every car parks in its preference or in the spot after its preference, and Fubini rankings of length $n$ are rankings of $n$ competitors allowing for ties. We present an independent proof of a result of Hadaway, which establishes that unit interval parking functions and Fubini rankings are in bijection. We also prove that the cardinality of these sets are given by Fubini numbers. In addition, we give a complete characterization of unit interval parking functions by determining when a rearrangement of a unit interval parking function is again a unit interval parking function. This yields an identity for the Fubini numbers as a sum of multinomials over compositions. Moreover, we introduce a generalization of Fubini rankings, which we call the $r$-Fubini rankings of length $n+r$. We show that this set is in bijection with unit interval parking functions of length $n+r$ where the first $r$ cars have distinct preferences. We conclude by establishing that these sets are enumerated by the $r$-Fubini numbers.

In this note, we consider asymptotic products of binomial and multinomial coefficients and determine their asymptotic constants and formulas. Among them, special cases are the central binomial coefficients, the related Catalan numbers, and binomial coefficients in a row of Pascal's triangle. For the latter case, we show that it can also be derived from a limiting case of products of binomial coefficients over the rows. The asymptotic constants are expressed by known constants, for example, the Glaisher-Kinkelin constant. In addition, the constants lie in certain intervals that we determine precisely. Subsequently, we revisit a related result of Hirschhorn and clarify the given numerical constant by showing the exact expression.
Products of boundary classes on M_0,n-bar via balanced weights
In this note, we give a simple closed formula for an arbitrary product, landing in dimension 0, of boundary classes on the Deligne--Mumford moduli space M_0,n-bar. For any such boundary strata $X_{T_1}, \ldots, X_{T_\ell}$, we show the intersection product $\int \prod_{i=1}^\ell [X_{T_i}]$ is either a signed product of multinomial coefficients, or zero, and provide a simple criterion for determining when it is nonzero.
We do not claim originality for our product formula, but to our knowledge it does not appear elsewhere in the literature.
Symmetries and intrinsic vs. extrinsic properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0, n}$
We consider the following question: How much of the combinatorial structure determining properties of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ is ``intrinsic'' and how much new information do we obtain from using properties specific to this space? Our approach is to study the effect of the $S_n$-action. Apart from being a natural action to consider, it is known that this action does not extend to other wonderful compactifications associated to the $A_{n - 2}$ hyperplane arrangement. We find the differences in intersection patterns of faces on associahedra and permutohedra which characterize the failure to extend to other compactifications and show that this is reflected by most terms of degree $\ge 2$ of the cohomology/Chow ring.
Even from a combinatorial perspective, terms of degree 1 are more naturally related to geometric properties. In particular, imposing $S_n$-invariance implies that many of the log concave sequences obtained from degree 1 Hodge--Riemann relations (and all of them for $n \le 2000$) on the Chow ring of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ can be restricted to those with a special recursive structure. A conjectural result implies that this is true for all $n$. Elements of these sequences can be expressed as polynomials in quantum Littlewood--Richardson coefficients multiplied by terms such as partition components, factorials, and multinomial coefficients. After dividing by binomial coefficients, polynomials with these numbers as coefficients can be interepreted in terms of volumes or resultants. Finally, we find a connection between the geometry of $\overline{\mathcal{M}_{0, n}}$ and higher degree Hodge--Riemann relations of other rings via Toeplitz matrices.

We introduce an algebra of elliptic commuting variables involving a base $q$, nome $p$, and $2r$ noncommuting variables. This algebra, which for $r=1$ reduces to an algebra considered earlier by the author, is an elliptic extension of the well-known algebra of $r$ $q$-commuting variables. We present a multinomial theorem valid as an identity in this algebra, hereby extending the author's previously obtained elliptic binomial theorem to higher rank. Two essential ingredients are a consistency relation satisfied by the elliptic weights and the Weierstrass type $\mathsf A$ elliptic partial fraction decomposition. From the elliptic multinomial theorem we obtain, by convolution, an identity equivalent to Rosengren's type $\mathsf A$ extension of the Frenkel-Turaev ${}_{10}V_9$ summation. Interpreted in terms of a weighted counting of lattice paths in the integer lattice $\mathbb Z^r$, this derivation of Rosengren's $\mathsf A_r$ Frenkel-Turaev summation constitutes the first combinatorial proof of that fundamental identity.
Noncommutative binomial theorem, shuffle type polynomials and Bell polynomials
In this paper we use the Lyndon-Shirshov basis to study the shuffle type polynomials. We give a free noncommutative binomial (or multinomial) theorem in terms of the Lyndon-Shirshov basis. Another noncommutative binomial theorem given by the shuffle type polynomials with respect to an adjoint derivation is established. As a result, the Bell differential polynomials and the $q$-Bell differential polynomials can be derived from the second binomial theorem. The relation between the shuffle type polynomials and the Bell differential polynomials is established. Finally, we give some applications of the free noncommutative binomial theorem including application of the shuffle type polynomials to bialgebras and Hopf algebras.
On the linear space of the two-sided generalized Fibonacci sequences
In this paper, we study the linear space of all two-sided generalized Fibonacci sequences $\{F_n\}_{n \in \mathbb{Z}}$ that satisfy the recurrence equation of order $k$: $F_n = F_{n-1} + F_{n-2} + \dots + F_{n-k}$. We give two types of explicit formula, one is based on generalized binomial coefficients and the other based on generalized multinomial coefficients.
Limits of polyhedral multinomial distributions
We consider limits of certain measures supported on lattice points in lattice polyhedra defined as the intersection of half-spaces $\{m\in\mathbb{R}^n|\langle v_i,x\rangle+a_i \geq 0\}$, where $\sum_i v_i = 0$. The measures are densities associated to lattice random variables obtained by restriction of multinomial random variables. We find the limiting Gaussian distributions explicitly.
Infinite product of power series
We give an exact coefficients formula of any infinite product of power series with constant term equal to $1$, by using structures from partitions of integers and permutation groups. This is an universal theorem for various of Binomial-type theorems in many sense. In particular, we give the new formulas as the double counting of Bell polynomial, Binomial Theorem and Multinomial Theorem.

We consider a scalar-valued implicit function of many variables, and provide two closed formulae for all of its partial derivatives. One formula is based on products of partial derivatives of the defining function, the other one involves less products of building blocks of multinomial type, and we study the combinatorics of the coefficients showing up in both formulae.
Barcode Posets: Combinatorial Properties and Connections
A barcode is a finite multiset of intervals on the real line, $B = \{ (b_i, d_i)\}_{i=1}^n$. Barcodes are important objects in topological data analysis, where they serve as summaries of the persistent homology groups of a filtration. The combinatorial properties of barcodes have also been studied, mainly in the context of interval orders and interval graphs. In this paper, we define a new family of maps from the space of barcodes with $n$ bars to the permutation sets of various multisets, known as multipermutations. These multipermutations provide new combinatorial invariants on the space of barcodes. We then define an order relation on these multipermutations, which we show can be interpreted as a crossing number for barcodes, reminiscent of Túran's crossing number for graphs. Next, we show that the resulting posets are order-isomorphic to principal ideals of a well known poset known as the multinomial Newman lattice. Consequently, these posets form the graded face-lattices of polytopes, which we refer to as barcode lattices or barcode polytopes. Finally, we show that for a large class of barcodes, these invariants can provide bounds on the Wasserstein and bottleneck distances between a pair of barcodes, linking these discrete invariants to continuous metrics on barcodes.

In this article we introduce a new family of lattice polytopes with rational linear precision. For this purpose, we define a new class of discrete statistical models that we call multinomial staged tree models. We prove that these models have rational maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) and give a criterion for these models to be log-linear. Our main result is then obtained by applying Garcia-Puente and Sottile's theorem that establishes a correspondence between polytopes with rational linear precision and log-linear models with rational MLE. Throughout this article we also study the interplay between the primitive collections of the normal fan of a polytope with rational linear precision and the shape of the Horn matrix of its corresponding statistical model. Finally, we investigate lattice polytopes arising from toric multinomial staged tree models, in terms of the combinatorics of their tree representations.
The multinomial tiling model

Given a graph $G$ and collection of subgraphs $T$ (called tiles), we consider covering $G$ with copies of tiles in $T$ so that each vertex $v\in G$ is covered with a predetermined multiplicity. The multinomial tiling model is a natural probability measure on such configurations (it is the uniform measure on standard tilings of the corresponding "blow-up" of $G$).
In the limit of large multiplicities we compute asymptotic growth rate of the number of multinomial tilings. We show that the individual tile densities tend to a Gaussian field with respect to an associated discrete Laplacian. We also find an exact discrete Coulomb gas limit when we vary the multiplicities.
For tilings of ${\mathbb Z}^d$ with translates of a single tile and a small density of defects, we study a crystallization phenomena when the defect density tends to zero, and give examples of naturally occurring quasicrystals in this framework.

The Chow ring of the moduli space of marked rational curves is generated by Keel's divisor classes. The top graded part of this Chow ring is isomorphic to the integers, generated by the class of a single point. In this paper, we give an algorithm for computing the intersection degree of tuples of Keel's divisor classes. This computation is a concrete but complicated algorithmic question in the field. Also, we give a simple complexity argument for the algorithm. Additionally, we introduce three identities on multinomial coefficients, as well as proofs for them.
A combinatorial conjecture from PAC-Bayesian machine learning
We present a proof of a combinatorial conjecture from the second author's Ph.D. thesis. The proof relies on binomial and multinomial sums identities. We also discuss the relevance of the conjecture in the context of PAC-Bayesian machine learning.
Diagonalization of Fix-Mahonian Matrices
Consider the regular representation of the sum over all permutations weighted by the sum of their descent, inversion, and fixed point multinomials. We compute the spectrum and the multiplicities of its elements of that matrix. Note that those multinomial statistics allow to apply the result on several permutation statistics like the number of fixed points, of descents, of inversions, and the major index at the same time.
Determinant Identities for Toeplitz-Hessenberg Matrices with Tribonacci Number Entries
In this paper, we evaluate determinants of some families of Toeplitz-Hessenberg matrices having tribonacci number entries. These determinant formulas may also be expressed equivalently as identities that involve sums of products of multinomial coefficients and tribonacci numbers. In particular, we establish a connection between the tribonacci and the Fibonacci and Padovan sequences via Toeplitz-Hessenberg determinants. We then obtain, by combinatorial arguments, extensions of our determinant formulas in terms of generalized tribonacci sequences satisfying an r-th order recurrence of a more general form with the appropriate initial conditions, where r>2 is arbitrary.
A homological characterization of generalized multinomial coefficients related to the entropic chain rule

There is an asymptotic relationship between the multiplicative relations among multinomial coefficients and the (additive) recurrence property of Shannon entropy known as the chain rule. We show that both types of identities are manifestations of a unique algebraic construction: a $1$-cocycle condition in \emph{information cohomology}, an algebraic invariant of phesheaves of modules on \emph{information structures} (categories of observables). Baudot and Bennequin introduced this cohomology and proved that Shannon entropy represents the only nontrivial cohomology class in degree $1$ when the coefficients are a natural presheaf of probabilistic functionals. The author obtained later a $1$-parameter family of deformations of that presheaf, in such a way that each Tsallis $α$-entropy appears as the unique $1$-cocycle associated to the parameter $α$. In this article, we introduce a new presheaf of \emph{combinatorial functionals}, which are measurable functions of finite arrays of integers; these arrays represent \emph{histograms} associated to random experiments. In this case, the only cohomology class in degree $0$ is generated by the exponential function and $1$-cocycles are Fontené-Ward generalized multinomial coefficients. As a byproduct, we get a simple combinatorial analogue of the fundamental equation of information theory that characterizes the generalized binomial coefficients. The asymptotic relationship mentioned above is extended to a correspondence between certain generalized multinomial coefficients and any $α$-entropy, that sheds new light on the meaning of the chain rule and its deformations.
Merged-log-concavity of rational functions, almost strictly unimodal sequences, and phase transitions of ideal boson-fermion gases
We obtain some new results on the unimodal sequences of the real values of rational functions by polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Thus, we introduce the notion of merged-log-concavity of rational functions. Roughly speaking, the notion extends Stanley's $q$-log-concavity of polynomials.
We construct explicit merged-log-concave rational functions by $q$-binomial coefficients, Hadamard products, and convolutions, extending the Cauchy-Binet formula. Then, we obtain the unimodal sequences of rational functions by Young diagrams. Moreover, we consider the variation of unimodal sequences by critical points that separate strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and hill-shape sequences among almost strictly unimodal sequences. Also, the critical points are zeros of polynomials in a suitable setting.
The study above extends the $t$-power series of $(\pm t;q)_{\infty}^{\mp 1}$ to some extent by polynomials with positive integer coefficients and the variation of unimodal sequences. We then obtain the golden ratio of quantum dilogarithms ($q$-exponentials) as a critical point. Additionally, we consider eta products, generalized Narayana numbers, and weighted $q$-multinomial coefficients, which we introduce.
In statistical mechanics, we discuss the grand canonical partition functions of some ideal boson-fermion gases with or without Casimir energies (Ramanujan summation). The merged-log-concavity gives phase transitions on Helmholtz free energies by critical points of the metallic ratios including the golden ratio. In particular, the phase transitions implies non-zero particle vacua from zero particle vacua as the temperature rises.

We provide bivariate asymptotics for the poly-Bernoulli numbers, a combinatorial array that enumerates lonesum matrices, using the methods of Analytic Combinatorics in Several Variables (ACSV). For the diagonal asymptotic (i.e., for the special case of square lonesum matrices) we present an alternative proof based on Parseval's identity. In addition, we provide an application in Algebraic Statistics on the asymptotic ML-degree of the bivariate multinomial missing data problem, and we strengthen an existing result on asymptotic enumeration of permutations having a specified excedance set.
