Finiteness theorems for matroid complexes with prescribed topology
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that there are finitely many simplicial complexes (up to isomorphism) with a given number of vertices. Translating to the language of $h$-vectors, there are finitely many simplicial complexes of bounded dimension with $h_1=k$ for any natural number $k$. In this paper we study the question at the other end of the $h$-vector: Are there only finitely many $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complexes with $h_d=k$ for any given $k$? The answer is no if we consider general complexes, but when focus on three cases coming from matroids: (i) independence complexes, (ii) broken circuit complexes, and (iii) order complexes of geometric lattices. We prove the answer is yes in cases (i) and (iii) and conjecture it is also true in case (ii).

Geometric progressions in syndetic sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
In order to investigate multiplicative structures in additively large sets, Beiglböck et al. raised a significant open question as to whether or not every subset of the natural numbers with bounded gaps (syndetic set) contains arbitrarily long geometric progressions. A result of Erdős implies that syndetic sets contain a $2$-term geometric progression with integer common ratio, but we still do not know if they contain such a progression with common ratio being a perfect square. In this article, we prove that for each $k\in \mathbb{N}$, a syndetic set contains $2$-term geometric progressions with common ratios of the form $n^kr_1$ and $p^kr_2$, where $p\in\mathbb{P}$ (the set of primes), $n$ is a composite number, $r_1\equiv 1 \pmod{n}$, $r_2\equiv 1\pmod{p}$ and $r_1,r_2\in \mathbb{N}$. We also show that 2-syndetic sets (sets with bounded gap two) contain infinitely many $2$-term geometric progressions with their respective common ratios being perfect squares.

The Undirected Optical Indices of Trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a connected graph $G$, an instance $I$ is a set of pairs of vertices and a corresponding routing $R$ is a set of paths specified for all vertex-pairs in $I$. Let $\mathfrak{R}_I$ be the collection of all routings with respect to $I$. The undirected optical index of $G$ with respect to $I$ refers to the minimum integer $k$ to guarantee the existence of a mapping $φ:R\to\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$, such that $φ(P)\neqφ(P')$ if $P$ and $P'$ have common edge(s), over all routings $R\in\mathfrak{R}_I$. A natural lower bound of the undirected optical index is the edge-forwarding index, which is defined to be the minimum of the maximum edge-load over all possible routings. Let $w(G,I)$ and $π(G,I)$ denote the undirected optical index and edge-forwarding index with respect to $I$, respectively. In this paper, we derive the inequality $w(T,I_A)<\frac{3}{2}π(T,I_A)$ for any tree $T$, where $I_A:=\{\{x,y\}:\,x,y\in V(T)\}$ is the all-to-all instance.

Approximately counting bases of bicircular matroids
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 124-135 • View Publication • BIB
We give a fully polynomial-time randomised approximation scheme (FPRAS) for the number of bases in a bicircular matroids. This is a natural class of matroids for which counting bases exactly is #P-hard and yet approximate counting can be done efficiently.

Tableau Correspondences and Representation Theory

We deduce decompositions of natural representations of general linear groups and symmetric groups from combinatorial bijections involving tableaux. These include some of Howe's dualities, Gelfand models, the Schur-Weyl decomposition of tensor space, and multiplicity-free decompositions indexed by threshold partitions.
Alignment Strength and Correlation for Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
When two graphs have a correlated Bernoulli distribution, we prove that the alignment strength of their natural bijection strongly converges to a novel measure of graph correlation $ρ_T$ that neatly combines intergraph with intragraph distribution parameters. Within broad families of the random graph parameter settings, we illustrate that exact graph matching runtime and also matchability are both functions of $ρ_T$, with thresholding behavior starkly illustrated in matchability.

Inequalities of Riesz-Sobolev type for compact connected Abelian groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
A version of the Riesz-Sobolev convolution inequality is formulated and proved for arbitrary compact connected Abelian groups. Maximizers are characterized and a quantitative stability theorem is proved, under natural hypotheses. A corresponding stability theorem for sets whose sumset has nearly minimal measure is also proved, sharpening recent results of other authors. For the special case of the group $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$, a continuous deformation of sets is developed, under which an appropriately scaled Riesz-Sobolev functional is shown to be nondecreasing.

Set-partition tableaux and representations of diagram algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The partition algebra is an associative algebra with a basis of set-partition diagrams and multiplication given by diagram concatenation. It contains as subalgebras a large class of diagram algebras including the Brauer, planar partition, rook monoid, rook-Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, Motzkin, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras. We give a construction of the irreducible modules of these algebras in two isomorphic ways: first, as the span of symmetric diagrams on which the algebra acts by conjugation twisted with an irreducible symmetric group representation and, second, on a basis indexed by set-partition tableaux such that diagrams in the algebra act combinatorially on tableaux. The first representation is analogous to the Gelfand model and the second is a generalization of Young's natural representation of the symmetric group on standard tableaux. The methods of this paper work uniformly for the partition algebra and its diagram subalgebras. As an application, we express the characters of each of these algebras as nonnegative integer combinations of symmetric group characters whose coefficients count fixed points under conjugation.

Eulerian edge refinements, geodesics, billiards and sphere coloring
A finite simple graph is called a 2-graph if all of its unit spheres S(x) are cyclic graphs of length 4 or larger. A 2-graph G is Eulerian if all vertex degrees of G are even. An edge refinement of a graph splits an edge (a,b) to two edges (a,c),(c,b) and connects the newly added vertex c to the intersection of S(a) with S(b). Theorem I assures that every 2-graph can be rendered Eulerian by successive edge refinements. The construction is explicit using geodesic cutting. After the refinement, we have an Eulerian 2-graph that carries a natural geodesic flow. We construct some ergodic ones. A 2-graph with boundary is finite simple graph for which every unit sphere is either a path graph of length n larger than 1 or a cyclic graph of length larger than 3. 2-balls are special 2-graphs are simply connected with a circular boundary. Theorem II tells that every 2-ball can be edge refined using interior edges to become Eulerian if and only if its boundary has length divisible by 3. A billiard map is defined already if all interior vertices have even degree. We will construct some ergodic billiards in 2-balls, where the geodesics bouncing off at the boundary symmetrically and which visit every interior edge exactly once. A consequence of Theorem II is that an Eulerian billiard which is ergodic must have a boundary length that is divisible by 3. We also construct other 2-graphs like tori with ergodic geodesic flows. This clashes with experience in the continuum, where tori have periodic points minimizing the length in homology classes of paths. Ergodic Eulerian 2-graphs or billiards are exciting because they satisfy a Hopf-Rynov result: there exists a geodesic connection between any two vertices. We get so unique canonical metric associated to any ergodic Eulerian graph. It is non-local in the sense that two adjacent vertices can have large distance.
The 4-Component Connectivity of Alternating Group Networks
Published in Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 766, (2019) pp. 38-45 • View Publication • BIB
The $\ell$-component connectivity (or $\ell$-connectivity for short) of a graph $G$, denoted by $κ_\ell(G)$, is the minimum number of vertices whose removal from $G$ results in a disconnected graph with at least $\ell$ components or a graph with fewer than $\ell$ vertices. This generalization is a natural extension of the classical connectivity defined in term of minimum vertex-cut. As an application, the $\ell$-connectivity can be used to assess the vulnerability of a graph corresponding to the underlying topology of an interconnection network, and thus is an important issue for reliability and fault tolerance of the network. So far, only a little knowledge of results have been known on $\ell$-connectivity for particular classes of graphs and small $\ell$'s. In a previous work, we studied the $\ell$-connectivity on $n$-dimensional alternating group networks $AN_n$ and obtained the result $κ_3(AN_n)=2n-3$ for $n\geqslant 4$. In this sequel, we continue the work and show that $κ_4(AN_n)=3n-6$ for $n\geqslant 4$.

The number of multiplicative Sidon sets of integers
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set $S$ of natural numbers is multiplicative Sidon if the products of all pairs in $S$ are distinct. Erdős in 1938 studied the maximum size of a multiplicative Sidon subset of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$, which was later determined up to the lower order term: $π(n)+Θ(\frac{n^{3/4}}{(\log n)^{3/2}})$. We show that the number of multiplicative Sidon subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$ is $T(n)\cdot 2^{Θ(\frac{n^{3/4}}{(\log n)^{3/2}})}$ for a certain function $T(n)\approx 2^{1.815π(n)}$ which we specify. This is a rare example in which the order of magnitude of the lower order term in the exponent is determined. It resolves the enumeration problem for multiplicative Sidon sets initiated by Cameron and Erdős in the 80s. We also investigate its extension for generalised multiplicative Sidon sets. Denote by $S_k$, $k\ge 2$, the number of multiplicative $k$-Sidon subsets of $\{1,\ldots, n\}$. We show that $S_k(n)=(β_k+o(1))^{π(n)}$ for some $β_k$ we define explicitly. Our proof is elementary.

Lattices from graph associahedra and subalgebras of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra is a well-studied combinatorial Hopf algebra with a basis indexed by permutations. This algebra contains a wide variety of interesting sub Hopf algebras, in particular the Hopf algebra of plane binary trees introduced by Loday and Ronco. We compare two general constructions of subalgebras of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer algebra, both of which include the Loday-Ronco algebra. The first is a construction by Reading defined in terms of lattice quotients of the weak order, and the second is a construction by Ronco in terms of graph associahedra. To make this comparison, we consider a natural partial ordering on the maximal tubings of a graph and characterize those graphs for which this poset is a lattice quotient of the weak order.

Spectral bounds for non-uniform hypergraphs using weighted clique expansion
Hypergraphs are an invaluable tool to understand many hidden patterns in large data sets. Among many ways to represent hypergraph, one useful representation is that of weighted clique expansion. In this paper, we consider this representation for non-uniform hypergraphs. We generalize the spectral results for uniform hypergraphs to non-uniform hypergraphs and show that they extend in a natural way. We provide a bound on the largest eigenvalue with respect to the average degree of neighbours of a vertex in a graph. We also prove an inequality on the boundary of a vertex set in terms of the largest and second smallest eigenvalue and use it to obtain bounds on some connectivity parameters of the hypergraph.
Average Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes in triangulations of manifolds
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 27:3 (2020), P3.40 • View Publication • BIB
We study a variation of Bagchi and Datta's $σ$-vector of a simplicial complex $C$, whose entries are defined as weighted averages of Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes of $C$. We show that these invariants satisfy an Alexander-Dehn-Sommerville type identity, and behave nicely under natural operations on triangulated manifolds and spheres such as connected sums and bistellar flips. In the language of commutative algebra, the invariants are weighted sums of graded Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of $C$. This interpretation implies, by a result of Adiprasito, that the Billera-Lee sphere maximizes these invariants among triangulated spheres with a given $f$-vector. For the first entry of $σ$, we extend this bound to the class of strongly connected pure complexes. As an application, we show how upper bounds on $σ$ can be used to obtain lower bounds on the $f$-vector of triangulated $4$-manifolds with transitive symmetry on vertices and prescribed vector of Betti numbers.

Rook and Wilf equivalence of integer partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The subjects of rook equivalence and Wilf equivalence have both attracted considerable attention over the last half-century. In this paper we introduce a new notion of Wilf equivalence for integer partitions, and, using this notion, we prove that rook equivalence implies Wilf equivalence. We also prove that if we refine the notions of rook and Wilf equivalence in a natural way, then these two notions coincide. In [6] we prove that Wilf equivalence implies rook equivalence.
Fully commutative elements of the complex reflection groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend the usual notion of fully commutative elements from the Coxeter groups to the complex reflection groups. Then we decompose the sets of fully commutative elements into natural subsets according to their combinatorial properties, and investigate the structure of these decompositions. As a consequence, we enumerate and describe the form of these elements in the complex reflection groups.

Completeness results for metrized rings and lattices
Published in Categories and General Algebraic Structures with Applications, special issue honoring George Grätzer, 11 (2019) pp.149-168 • View Publication • BIB
The Boolean ring $B$ of measurable subsets of the unit interval, modulo sets of measure zero, has proper radical ideals (e.g., $\{0\})$ that are closed under the natural metric, but has no prime ideals closed under that metric; hence closed radical ideals are not, in general, intersections of closed prime ideals. Moreover, $B$ is known to be complete in its metric. Together, these facts answer a question posed by J.Gleason. From this example, rings of arbitrary characteristic with the corresponding properties are obtained. The result that $B$ is complete in its metric is generalized to show that if $L$ is a lattice given with a metric satisfying identically either the inequality $d(x\vee y,\,x\vee z)\leq d(y,z)$ or the inequality $d(x\wedge y,\,x\wedge z)\leq d(y,z),$ and if in $L$ every increasing Cauchy sequence converges and every decreasing Cauchy sequence converges, then every Cauchy sequence in $L$ converges; i.e., $L$ is complete as a metric space. We show by example that if the above inequalities are replaced by the weaker conditions $d(x,\,x\vee y)\leq d(x,y),$ respectively $d(x,\,x\wedge y)\leq d(x,y),$ the completeness conclusion can fail. We end with two open questions.

Artin Groups and Iwahori-Hecke algebras over finite fields
In this doctoral thesis, we will determine the image of Artin groups associated to all finite irreducible Coxeter groups inside their associated finite Iwahori-Hecke algebra. This was done in type $A$ by Brunat, Magaard and Marin. The Zariski closure of the image was determined in the generic case by Marin. It is suggested by strong approximation that the results should be similar in the finite case. However, the conditions required to use are much too strong and would only provide a portion of the results. We show in this thesis that they are but that new phenomena arise from the different field factorizations. The techniques used in the finite case are very different from the ones in the generic case. The main arguments come from finite group theory. In high dimension, we will use a theorem by Guralnick-Saxl which uses the classification of finite simple groups to give a condition for subgroups of linear groups to be classical groups in a natural representation. In low dimension, we will mainly use the classification of maximal subgroups of classical groups determined by Bray, Holt and Roney-Dougal for the complicated cases. We find some new $W$-graphs in types $H_4$, $E_6$ and $E_8$ which provide different information from the usual ones. They are all associated in a natural way to a bilinear form which is very complicated to obtain in the previous models. In this model, the bilinear form is obtained using only the two-colorability and its matrix in a well chosen basis is anti-diagonal. The uniqueness properties can probably be extended in a more general setting and understanding which setting this is may be worth considering.

Translation invariant filters and van der Waerden's Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present a self-contained proof of a strong version of van der Waerden's Theorem. By using translation invariant filters that are maximal with respect to inclusion, a simple inductive argument shows the existence of "piecewise syndetically"-many monochromatic arithmetic progressions of any length k in every finite coloring of the natural numbers. All the presented constructions are constructive in nature, in the sense that the involved maximal filters are defined by recurrence on suitable countable algebras of sets. No use of the axiom of choice or of Zorn's Lemma is needed.

Large girth approximate Steiner triple systems
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society, 100 (2019), 895-913 • View Publication • BIB
In 1973 Erdos asked whether there are n-vertex partial Steiner triple systems with arbitrary high girth and quadratically many triples. (Here girth is defined as the smallest integer g \ge 4 for which some g-element vertex-set contains at least g-2 triples.) We answer this question, by showing existence of approximate Steiner triple systems with arbitrary high girth. More concretely, for any fixed \ell \ge 4 we show that a natural constrained random process typically produces a partial Steiner triple system with (1/6-o(1))n^2 triples and girth larger than \ell. The process iteratively adds random triples subject to the constraint that the girth remains larger than \ell. Our result is best possible up to the o(1)-term, which is a negative power of n.
