Let $p_1,\ldots,p_n$ be a set of points in the unit square and let $T_1,\ldots,T_n$ be a set of $δ$-tubes such that $T_j$ passes through $p_j$. We prove a lower bound for the number of incidences between the points and tubes under a natural regularity condition (similar to Frostman regularity). As a consequence, we show that in any configuration of points $p_1,\ldots, p_n \in [0,1]^2$ along with a line $\ell_j$ through each point $p_j$, there exist $j\neq k$ for which $d(p_j, \ell_k) \lesssim n^{-2/3+o(1)}$.
It follows from the latter result that any set of $n$ points in the unit square contains three points forming a triangle of area at most $n^{-7/6+o(1)}$. This new upper bound for Heilbronn's triangle problem attains the high-low limit established in our previous work arXiv:2305.18253.
Brunn-Minkowski type estimates for certain discrete sumsets
Let $d,k$ be natural numbers and let $\mathcal{L}_1, \dots, \mathcal{L}_k \in \mathrm{GL}_d(\mathbb{Q})$ be linear transformations such that there are no non-trivial subspaces $U, V \subseteq \mathbb{Q}^d$ of the same dimension satisfying $\mathcal{L}_i(U) \subseteq V$ for every $1 \leq i \leq k$. For every non-empty, finite set $A \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, we prove that \[ |\mathcal{L}_1(A) + \dots + \mathcal{L}_k(A) | \geq k^d |A| - O_{d,k}(|A|^{1- δ}), \] where $δ>0$ is some absolute constant depending on $d,k$. Building on work of Conlon-Lim, we can show stronger lower bounds when $k$ is even and $\mathcal{L}_1, \dots, \mathcal{L}_k$ satisfy some further incongruence conditions, consequently resolving various cases of a conjecture of Bukh. Moreover, given any $d, k\in \mathbb{N}$ and any finite, non-empty set $A \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ not contained in a translate of some hyperplane, we prove sharp lower bounds for the cardinality of the $k$-fold sumset $kA$ in terms of $d,k$ and $|A|$. This can be seen as a $k$-fold generalisation of Freiman's lemma.
Partitioning 2-edge-coloured bipartite graphs into monochromatic cycles

Given an $r$-edge-colouring of the edges of a graph $G$, we say that it can be partitioned into $p$ monochromatic cycles when there exists a set of $p$ vertex-disjoint monochromatic cycles covering all the vertices of $G$. In the literature of this problem, an edge and a single vertex both count as a cycle.
We show that for every $2$-colouring of the edges of a complete balanced bipartite graph, $K_{n,n}$, it can be partitioned into at most 4 monochromatic cycles. This type of question was first studied in 1970 for complete graphs and in 1983, by Gyárfás and Lehel, for $K_{n,n}$. In 2014, Pokrovskiy showed for all $n$ that, given any $2$-colouring of its edges, $K_{n,n}$ can be partitioned into at most three monochromatic paths. It turns out that finding monochromatic cycles instead of paths is a natural question that has also been raised for other graphs. In 2015, Schaudt and Stein showed that 14 cycles are sufficient for sufficiently large $2$-edge-coloured $K_{n,n}$.
Expected Natural Density of Countable Sets after Infinitely Iterated de Finetti Lotteries, Computed via Matrix Decomposition
Consider a fair lottery over the natural numbers in which the selected number is removed. This lottery is iterated countably infinite times, with a known ratio of iterations to natural numbers. Removed numbers are not replaced. The natural numbers are partitioned into two sets with a given ratio of elements, which is tracked along each iteration of the lottery.
Hess and Polisetty considered and investigated such a process and reported the expected values of the densities for some particular cases.
In this work, we provide a novel framework for computing these expected densities using infinite matrices. The results presented in this work generalize previous results.
On the gcd graphs over polynomial rings
Gcd-graphs over the ring of integers modulo $n$ are a natural generalization of unitary Cayley graphs. The study of these graphs has foundations in various mathematical fields, including number theory, ring theory, and representation theory. Using the theory of Ramanujan sums, it is known that these gcd-graphs have integral spectra; i.e., all their eigenvalues are integers. In this work, inspired by the analogy between number fields and function fields, we define and study gcd-graphs over polynomial rings with coefficients in finite fields. We establish some fundamental properties of these graphs, emphasizing their analogy to their counterparts over $\mathbb{Z}.$
Orbital categories and weak indexing systems
We initiate the combinatorial study of the poset $\mathrm{wIndex}_{\mathcal{T}}$ of weak $\mathcal{T}$-indexing systems, consisting of composable collections of arities for $\mathcal{T}$-equivariant algebraic structures, where $\mathcal{T}$ is an orbital $\infty$-category, such as the orbit category of a finite group. In particular, we show that these are equivalent to weak $\mathcal{T}$-indexing categories and characterize various unitality conditions.
Within this sits a natural generalization $\mathrm{Index}_{\mathcal{T}} \subset \mathrm{wIndex}_{\mathcal{T}}$ of Blumberg-Hill's indexing systems, consisting of arities for structures possessing binary operations and unit elements. We characterize the relationship between the posets of unital weak indexing systems and indexing systems, the latter remaining isomorphic to transfer systems on this level of generality. We use this to characterize the poset of unital $C_{p^n}$-weak indexing systems.

$m$-location is a local combinatorial condition for flag simplicial complexes introduced by Osajda. Osajda showed that simply connected 8-located locally 5-large complexes are hyperbolic. We treat the nonpositive curvature case of 7-located locally 5-large complexes.
We show that any minimal area disc diagram in a 7-located locally 5-large complex is itself 7-located and locally 5-large. We define a natural CAT(0) metric for 7-located disc diagrams and use this to prove that simply connected 7-located locally 5-large complexes have quadratic isoperimetric function. Along the way, we prove that locally weakly systolic complexes are 7-located locally 5-large.
Braid graphs in simply-laced triangle-free Coxeter systems are median
Any two reduced expressions for the same Coxeter group element are related by a sequence of commutation and braid moves. Two reduced expressions are said to be braid equivalent if they are related via a sequence of braid moves. Braid equivalence is an equivalence relation and the corresponding equivalence classes are called braid classes. Each braid class can be encoded in terms of a braid graph in a natural way. In a recent paper, Awik et al.~proved that when a Coxeter system is simply laced and triangle free (i.e., the corresponding Coxeter graph has no three-cycles), the braid graph for a reduced expression is a partial cube (i.e., isometric to a subgraph of a hypercube). In this paper, we will provide an alternate proof of this fact, as well as determine the minimal dimension hypercube into which a braid graph can be isometrically embedded, which addresses an open question posed by Awik et al. For our main result, we prove that braid graphs in simply-laced triangle-free Coxeter systems are median, which is a strengthening of previous results.

Füredi and Gunderson showed that $ex(n, C_{2k+1})$ is achieved only on $K_{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor, \lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil}$ if $n\ge 4k-2$. It is natural to study how far a $ C_{2k+1}$-free graph is from being bipartite.Let $T^*(r, n)$ be obtained by adding a suspension $K_{r}$ with $1$ suspension point to $K_{\lfloor\frac{n-r+1}{2}\rfloor, \lceil\frac{n-r+1}{2}\rceil}$. We show that for integers $r, k$ with $3\le r\le 2k-4$ and $n\ge 20(r+2)^2k$, if $G$ is a $C_{2k+1}$-free $n$-vertex graph with $e(G)\ge e(T^*(r, n))$, then $G$ is obtained by adding suspensions to a bipartite graph one by one and the total number of vertices in all suspensions minus intersection points is no more than $r-1$. In other words, $G=B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^p G_i$, where $B$ is a bipartite graph, $G_1$ is a suspension to $B$, $G_j$ is a suspension to $B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^{j-1} G_i$ for $2\le j\le p$ and $\sum\limits_{i=1}^p \vert V(G_i)-V(G_i)\cap V(B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^{j-1} G_i) \vert\le r-1$. Furthermore, $\sum\limits_{i=1}^p \vert V(G_i)-V(G_i)\cap V(B\bigcup\limits_{i=1}^{j-1} G_i) \vert= r-1$ if and only if $G=T^*(r, n)$. Let $d_2(G)=\min\{|T|: T\subseteq V(G), G-T \ \text{is bipartite}\}$ and $γ_2(G)=\min\{|E|: E\subseteq E(G), G-E \ \text{is bipartite}\}$. Our structural stability result implies that $d_2(G)\le r-1$ and $γ_2(G)\le {\lceil\frac{r}{2}\rceil \choose 2}+{\lfloor\frac{r}{2}\rfloor \choose 2}$ under the same condition, which is a recent result of Ren-Wang-Wang-Yang [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 38 (2024)]. They proved $d_2(G)\le r-1$ and $γ_2(G)\le {\lceil\frac{r}{2}\rceil \choose 2}+{\lfloor\frac{r}{2}\rfloor \choose 2}$ separately. We introduce a new concept strong-$2k$-core which is the key that we can give a stronger structural stability result but a simpler proof.
Lassos: Pushing Tree Decompositions Forward Along Homomorphisms
It is folklore that tree-width is monotone under taking subgraphs (i.e. injective graph homomorphisms) and contractions (certain kinds of surjective graph homomorphisms). However, although tree-width is obviously not monotone under any surjective graph homomorphism, it is not clear whether contractions are canonically the only class of surjections with respect to which it is monotone. Under the requirement that the decomposition shape must be preserved, we prove that this is indeed the case.
Our results provide a framework for answering questions of this sort for many other kinds of combinatorial data structures (such as directed multigraphs, hypergraphs, Petri nets, circular port graphs, half-edge graphs, databases, simplicial sets etc.) for which natural analogues of tree decompositions can be defined. Furthermore and of independent interest, we prove these results by introducing the notion of a lasso, a generalization of contractions of graphs to arbitrary categories with pushouts of monomorphisms.

We show that the chromatic quasisymmetric function (CQF) of a labeled path graph on $n$ vertices is not symmetric unless the labeling is the natural labeling $1, 2, ..., n$ or its reverse $n, ..., 2, 1$. We also show that the star graph $K_{1, n-1}$ with $n\geq 3$ has a nonsymmetric CQF for all labelings.
A strange five vertex model and multispecies ASEP on a ring

We revisit the problem of constructing the stationary states of the multispecies asymmetric simple exclusion process on a one-dimensional periodic lattice. Central to our approach is a quantum oscillator weighted five vertex model which features a strange weight conservation distinct from the conventional one. Our results clarify the interrelations among several known results and refine their derivations. For instance, the stationary probability derived from the multiline queue construction by Martin (2020) and Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2022) is identified with the partition function of a three-dimensional system. The matrix product operators by Prolhac--Evans--Mallick (2009) acquire a natural diagrammatic interpretation as corner transfer matrices (CTM). The origin of their recursive tensor structure, as questioned by Aggarwal--Nicoletti--Petrov (2023), is revealed through the CTM diagrams. Finally, the derivation of the Zamolodchikov--Faddeev algebra by Cantini--de Gier--Wheeler (2015) is made intrinsic by elucidating its precise connection to a solution to the Yang--Baxter equation originating from quantum group representations.
A q-analogue of graph independence polynomials with a group-theoretic interpretation
We define totally-isotropic polynomials of alternating matrix spaces over finite fields, by analogy with independence polynomials of graphs. Our main result shows that totally-isotropic polynomials of graphical alternating matrix spaces give rise to a natural q-analogue of graph independence polynomials.
For p-groups of class 2 and exponent p, this family of polynomials over fields of order p can be naturally interpreted as enumerating their abelian subgroups containing the commutator subgroup according to the orders. With this interpretation, our main result has implications to graphical groups over finite fields, in the same spirit as the results in (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 2022) by Rossmann, who studied enumerating conjugacy classes of graphical groups over finite fields.
On sets with missing differences in compact abelian groups

A much-studied problem posed by Motzkin asks to determine, given a finite set $D$ of integers, the so-called Motzkin density for $D$, i.e., the supremum of upper densities of sets of integers whose difference set avoids $D$. We study the natural analogue of this problem in compact abelian groups. Using ergodic-theoretic tools, this is shown to be equivalent to the following discrete problem: given a lattice $Λ\subset \mathbb{Z}^r$, letting $D$ be the image in $\mathbb{Z}^r/Λ$ of the standard basis, determine the Motzkin density for $D$ in $\mathbb{Z}^r/Λ$. We study in particular the periodicity question: is there a periodic $D$-avoiding set of maximal density in $\mathbb{Z}^r/Λ$? The Greenfeld--Tao counterexample to the periodic tiling conjecture implies that the answer can be negative. On the other hand, we prove that the answer is positive in several cases, including the case rank$(Λ)=1$ (in which we give a formula for the Motzkin density), the case rank$(Λ)=r-1$, and hence also the case $r\leq 3$. It follows that, for up to three missing differences, the Motzkin density in a compact abelian group is always a rational number.
Towards an optimal hypergraph container lemma

The hypergraph container lemma is a powerful tool in probabilistic combinatorics that has found many applications since it was first proved a decade ago. Roughly speaking, it asserts that the family of independent sets of every uniform hypergraph can be covered by a small number of almost-independent sets, called containers. In this article, we formulate and prove two new versions of the lemma that display the following three attractive features. First, they both admit short and simple proofs that have surprising connections to other well-studied topics in probabilistic combinatorics. Second, they use alternative notions of almost-independence in order to describe the containers. Third, they yield improved dependence of the number of containers on the uniformity of the hypergraph, hitting a natural barrier for second-moment-type approaches.
From Maximum Cut to Maximum Independent Set
The Maximum Cut (Max-Cut) problem could be naturally expressed either in a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) formulation, or as an Ising model. It has long been known that the Maximum Independent Set (MIS) problem could also be related to a specific Ising model. Therefore, it would be natural to attack MIS with various Max-Cut/Ising solvers. It turns out that this strategy greatly improves the approximation for the independence number of random Erdős-Rényi graphs. It also exhibits perfect performance on a benchmark arising from coding theory. These results pave the way for further development of approximate quantum algorithms on MIS, and specifically on the corresponding coding problems.
Self-modified difference ascent sequences

Ascent sequences play a key role in the combinatorics of Fishburn structures. Difference ascent sequences are a natural generalization obtained by replacing ascents with $d$-ascents. We have recently extended the so-called hat map to difference ascent sequences, and self-modified difference ascent sequences are the fixed points under this map. We characterize self-modified difference ascent sequences and enumerate them in terms of certain generalized Fibonacci polynomials. Furthermore, we describe the corresponding subset of $d$-Fishburn permutations.
More results on stack-sorting for set partitions
Let a sock be an element of an ordered finite alphabet A and a sequence of these elements be a sock sequence. In 2023, Xia introduced a deterministic version of Defant and Kravitz's stack-sorting map by defining the $φ_σ$ and $φ_{\overlineσ}$ pattern-avoidance stack-sorting maps for sock sequences. Xia showed that the $φ_{aba}$ map is the only one that eventually sorts all set partitions; in this paper, we prove deeper results regarding $φ_{aba}$ and $φ_{\overline{aba}}$ as a natural next step. We newly define two algorithms with time complexity $O(n^3)$ that determine if any given sock sequence is in the image of $φ_{aba}$ or $φ_{\overline{aba}}$ respectively. We also show that the maximum number of preimages that a sock sequence of length $n$ has grows at least exponentially under both the $φ_{aba}$ and $φ_{\overline{aba}}$ maps. Additionally, we prove results regarding fertility numbers (introduced by Defant) in the context of set partitions and multiple-pattern-avoiding stacks.

Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices and $1 \le k \le n-1$ an integer. The $k$-token graph of $G$ is the graph $F_k(G)$ whose vertices are all the $k$-subsets of vertices of $G$, two of which are adjacent whenever their symmetric difference is an edge of $G$. Every automorphism of $G$ induces an automorphism of $F_k(G)$ in a natural way. Suppose that $S:=\{x,y\}$ is a cut set of $G$, such that $x$ and $y$ have the same neighbours in $G\setminus \{x,y\}$. In this paper we show that there exist a large number of automorphisms of $F_k(G)$ defined by $S$ that are not induced by automorphisms of $G$. We also describe the group produced by all such $2$-cuts of $G$.
Weakly distance-regular digraphs whose underlying graphs are distance-regular,II
Weakly distance-regular digraphs are a natural directed version of distance-regular graphs. In [16], we classified all commutative weakly distance-regular digraphs whose underlying graphs are Hamming graphs, folded n-cubes, or Doob graphs. In this paper, we classify all commutative weakly distance-regular digraphs whose underlying graphs are Johnson graphs or folded Johnson graphs.
