On the canonical ideal of the Ehrhart ring of the chain polytope of a poset
Let P be a poset, O(P) the order polytope of P and C(P) the chain polytope of P. In this paper, we study the canonical ideal of the Ehrhart ring K[C(P)] of C(P) over a field K and characterize the level (resp. anticanonical level) property of K[C(P)] by a combinatorial structure of P. In particular, we show that if K[C(P)] is level (resp. anticanonical level), then so is K[O(P)]. We exhibit examples which show the converse does not hold. Moreover, we show that the symbolic powers of the canonical ideal of K[C(P)] are identical with ordinary ones and degrees of the generators of the canonical and anticanonical ideals are consecutive integers.
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes: a story of flow and order polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are prominent objects in algebraic combinatorics. The number of integer points of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ is equal to the dimension of the corresponding irreducible representation of $GL(n)$. It is well-known that the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is a marked order polytope; the authors have recently shown it to be a flow polytope. In this paper, we draw corollaries from this result and establish a general theory connecting marked order polytopes and flow polytopes.

Enriched order polytopes and Enriched Hibi rings
Published in European Journal of Mathematics 7 (2021), 48--68 • View PublicationBIB
Stanley introduced two classes of lattice polytopes associated to posets, which are called the order polytope ${\mathcal O}_P$ and the chain polytope ${\mathcal C}_P$ of a poset $P$. It is known that, given a poset $P$, the Ehrhart polynomials of ${\mathcal O}_P$ and ${\mathcal C}_P$ are equal to the order polynomial of $P$ that counts the $P$-partitions. In this paper, we introduce the enriched order polytope of a poset $P$ and show that it is a reflexive polytope whose Ehrhart polynomial is equal to that of the enriched chain polytope of $P$ and the left enriched order polynomial of $P$ that counts the left enriched $P$-partitions, by using the theory of Gröbner bases. The toric rings of enriched order polytopes are called enriched Hibi rings. It turns out that enriched Hibi rings are normal, Gorenstein, and Koszul. The above result implies the existence of a bijection between the lattice points in the dilations of ${\mathcal O}^{(e)}_P$ and ${\mathcal C}^{(e)}_P$. Towards such a bijection, we give the facet representations of enriched order and chain polytopes.

We describe a family of shellings for the canonical triangulation of the order polytope of the zig-zag poset. This gives a new combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients in the numerator of the Ehrhart series of this order polytopein terms of the swap statistic on alternating permutations.

Incompatible double posets and double order polytopes
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(1) P1.9 (2020), 13 pages • View PublicationBIB
In 1986 Stanley associated to a poset the order polytope. The close interplay between its combinatorial and geometric properties makes the order polytope an object of tremendous interest. Double posets were introduced in 2011 by Malvenuto and Reutenauer as a generalization of Stanleys labelled posets. A double poset is a finite set equipped with two partial orders. To a double poset Chappell, Friedl and Sanyal (2017) associated the double order polytope. They determined the combinatorial structure for the class of compatible double posets. In this paper we generalize their description to all double posets and we classify the 2-level double order polytopes.

Levelness of toric rings arising from order and chain polytopes
Let $K[\mathcal{O}(P)]$ denote the toric ring of the order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$ of a finite partially ordered set $P$ and $K[\mathcal{C}(P)]$ that of the chain polytope $\mathcal{C}(P)$. It will be shown that $β_{p, p+j}(K[\mathcal{O}(P)]) = β_{p, p+j}(K[\mathcal{C}(P)])$ for all $j \geq 0$, where $p$ is the projective dimension of $K[\mathcal{O}(P)]$ (and that of $K[\mathcal{C}(P)]$). In particular, $K[\mathcal{O}(P)]$ is level if and only if $K[\mathcal{C}(P)]$ is level.

Polyhedral geometry for lecture hall partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lecture hall partitions are a fundamental combinatorial structure which have been studied extensively over the past two decades. These objects have produced new results, as well as reinterpretations and generalizations of classicial results, which are of interest in combinatorial number theory, enumerative combinatorics, and convex geometry. In a recent survey of Savage \cite{Savage-LHP-Survey}, a wide variety of these results are nicely presented. However, since the publication of this survey, there have been many new developments related to the polyhedral geometry and Ehrhart theory arising from lecture hall partitions. Subsequently, in this survey article, we focus exclusively on the polyhedral geometric results in the theory of lecture hall partitions in an effort to showcase these new developments. In particular, we highlight results on lecture hall cones, lecture hall simplices, and lecture hall order polytopes. We conclude with an extensive list of open problems and conjectures in this area.

Integer decomposition property for Cayley sums of order and stable set polytopes
Published in Michigan Mathematical Journal 69 (2020), 765--778 • View PublicationBIB
Lattice polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property (IDP for short) turn up in many fields of mathematics. It is known that if the Cayley sum of lattice polytopes possesses IDP, then so does their Minkowski sum. In this paper, the Cayley sum of the order polytope of a finite poset and the stable set polytope of a finite simple graph is studied. We show that the Cayley sum of an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a perfect graph possesses a regular unimodular triangulation and IDP, and hence so does their Minkowski sum. Moreover, it turns out that, for an order polytope and the stable set polytope of a graph, the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the Cayley sum is Gorenstein; (ii) the Minkowski sum is Gorenstein; (iii) the graph is perfect.

Stanley's non-Ehrhart-positive order polytopes
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 108(2019), 1--10 • View PublicationBIB
We say a polytope is Ehrhart positive if all the coefficients in its Ehrhart polynomial are positive. Answering an Ehrhart positivity question posed on Mathoverflow, Stanley provided an example of a non-Ehrhart-positive order polytope of dimension $21$. Stanley's example comes from a certain family of order polytopes. In this paper, we study the Ehrhart positivity question on this family of polytopes. By giving explicit formulas for the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomials of these polytopes in terms of Bernolli numbers, we determine the sign of each Ehrhart coefficient of each polytope in the family. As a consequence of our result, we conclude that for any positive integer $d \ge 21,$ there exists an order polytope of dimension $d$ that is not Ehrhart positive, and for any positive integer $\ell$, there exists an order polytope whose Ehrhart polynomial has precisely $\ell$ negative coefficients, which answers a question posed by Hibi. We finish this article by discussing the existence of lower-dimensional order polytopes whose Ehrhart polynomials have a negative coefficient.
Levelness of Order Polytopes
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 34 (2020), 1261--1280 • View PublicationBIB
Since their introduction by Stanley~\cite{StanleyOrderPoly} order polytopes have been intriguing mathematicians as their geometry can be used to examine (algebraic) properties of finite posets. In this paper, we follow this route to examine the levelness property of order polytopes. The levelness property was also introduced by Stanley~\cite{Stanley-CM-complexes} and it generalizes the Gorenstein property. This property has been recently characterized by Miyazaki~\cite{Miyazaki} for the case of order polytopes. We provide an alternative characterization using weighted digraphs. Using this characterization, we give a new infinite family of level posets and show that determining levelness is in $\operatorname{co-NP}$. This family can be used to create infinitely many examples illustrating that the levelness property can not be characterized by the $h^{\ast}$-vector. We then turn to the more general family of alcoved polytopes. We give a characterization for levelness of alcoved polytopes using the Minkowski sum. Then we study several cases when the product of two polytopes is level. In particular, we provide an example where the product of two level polytopes is not level.

Antichain toggling and rowmotion
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 26, Issue 1, Number 29, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we analyze the toggle group on the set of antichains of a poset. Toggle groups, generated by simple involutions, were first introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass for order ideals of posets. Recently Striker has motivated the study of toggle groups on general families of subsets, including antichains. This paper expands on this work by examining the relationship between the toggle groups of antichains and order ideals, constructing an explicit isomorphism between the two groups. We also focus on the rowmotion action that has been well-studied in dynamical algebraic combinatorics, describing it as the composition of antichain toggles. We also describe a piecewise-linear analogue of toggling to Stanley's chain polytope. We examine the connections with the piecewise-linear toggling Einstein and Propp introduced for order polytopes and prove that almost all of our results for antichain toggles extend to the piecewise-linear setting.

Electrical networks and hyperplane arrangements

This paper studies \emph{Dirichlet arrangements}, a generalization of graphic hyperplane arrangements arising from electrical networks and order polytopes of finite posets. We generalize descriptions of combinatorial features of graphic arrangements to Dirichlet arrangements, including characteristic polynomials and supersolvability. We apply these results to visibility sets of order polytopes and fixed-energy harmonic functions on electrical networks.

Reflexive polytopes arising from partially ordered sets and perfect graphs
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics 49(2019), 69--81 • View PublicationBIB
Reflexive polytopes which have the integer decomposition property are of interest. Recently, some large classes of reflexive polytopes with integer decomposition property coming from the order polytopes and the chain polytopes of finite partially ordered sets are known. In the present paper, we will generalize this result. In fact, by virtue of the algebraic technique on Gröbner bases, new classes of reflexive polytopes with the integer decomposition property coming from the order polytopes of finite partially ordered sets and the stable set polytopes of perfect graphs will be introduced. Furthermore, the result will give a polyhedral characterization of perfect graphs. Finally, we will investigate the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomials of these reflexive polytopes.

Proof of Chapoton's conjecture on Newton polygons of $q$-Ehrhart polynomials

Recently, Chapoton found a $q$-analog of Ehrhart polynomials, which are polynomials in $x$ whose coefficients are rational functions in $q$. Chapoton conjectured the shape of the Newton polygon of the numerator of the $q$-Ehrhart polynomial of an order polytope. In this paper, we prove Chapoton's conjecture.

On 2-level polytopes arising in combinatorial settings
Published • View PublicationBIB
2-level polytopes naturally appear in several areas of pure and applied mathematics, including combinatorial optimization, polyhedral combinatorics, communication complexity, and statistics. In this paper, we present a study of some 2-level polytopes arising in combinatorial settings. Our first contribution is proving that v(P)*f(P) is upper bounded by d*2^(d+1), for a large collection of families of such polytopes P. Here v(P) (resp. f(P)) is the number of vertices (resp. facets) of P, and d is its dimension. Whether this holds for all 2-level polytopes was asked in [Bohn et al., ESA 2015], and experimental results from [Fiorini et al., ISCO 2016] showed it true up to dimension 7. The key to most of our proofs is a deeper understanding of the relations among those polytopes and their underlying combinatorial structures. This leads to a number of results that we believe to be of independent interest: a trade-off formula for the number of cliques and stable sets in a graph; a description of stable matching polytopes as affine projections of certain order polytopes; and a linear-size description of the base polytope of matroids that are 2-level in terms of cuts of an associated tree.

Stapledon Decompositions and Inequalities for Coefficients of Chromatic Polynomials
We use a polynomial decomposition result by Stapledon to show that the numerator polynomial of the Ehrhart series of an open polytope is the difference of two symmetric polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients. We obtain a related decomposition for order polytopes and for the numerator polynomial of the corresponding series for chromatic polynomials. The nonnegativity of the coefficients in such decompositions provide inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of chromatic polynomials for any simple graph.

Polytopes and large counterexamples
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this short note, we give large counterexamples to natural questions about certain order polytopes, in particular, Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes. Several of the counterexamples are too large to be discovered via a brute-force computer search. We also show that the multiset of hooks in a Young diagram is not enough information to determine the Ehrhart polynomial for an associated order polytope. This is somewhat counter-intuitive to the fact that the multiset of hooks always determine the leading coefficient of the Ehrhart polynomial.

On q-integrals over order polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial study of multiple $q$-integrals is developed. This includes a $q$-volume of a convex polytope, which depends upon the order of $q$-integration. A multiple $q$-integral over an order polytope of a poset is interpreted as a generating function of linear extensions of the poset. Specific modifications of posets are shown to give predictable changes in $q$-integrals over their respective order polytopes. This method is used to combinatorially evaluate some generalized $q$-beta integrals. One such application is a combinatorial interpretation of a $q$-Selberg integral. New generating functions for generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and reverse plane partitions are established. A $q$-analogue to a well known result in Ehrhart theory is generalized using $q$-volumes and $q$-Ehrhart polynomials.

Two double poset polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
To every poset P, Stanley (1986) associated two polytopes, the order polytope and the chain polytope, whose geometric properties reflect the combinatorial qualities of P. This construction allows for deep insights into combinatorics by way of geometry and vice versa. Malvenuto and Reutenauer (2011) introduced 'double posets', that is, (finite) sets equipped with two partial orders, as a generalization of Stanley's labelled posets. Many combinatorial constructions can be naturally phrased in terms of double posets. We introduce the 'double order polytope' and the 'double chain polytope' and we amply demonstrate that they geometrically capture double posets, i.e., the interaction between the two partial orders. We describe the facial structures, Ehrhart polynomials, and volumes of these polytopes in terms of the combinatorics of double posets. We also describe a curious connection to Geissinger's valuation polytopes and we characterize 2-level polytopes among our double poset polytopes. Fulkerson's 'anti-blocking' polytopes from combinatorial optimization subsume stable set polytopes of graphs and chain polytopes of posets. We determine the geometry of Minkowski- and Cayley sums of anti-blocking polytopes. In particular, we describe a canonical subdivision of Minkowski sums of anti-blocking polytopes that facilitates the computation of Ehrhart (quasi-)polynomials and volumes. This also yields canonical triangulations of double poset polytopes. Finally, we investigate the affine semigroup rings associated to double poset polytopes. We show that they have quadratic Groebner bases, which gives an algebraic description of the unimodular flag triangulations described in the first part.

Facets and volume of Gorenstein Fano polytopes
Published in Mathematische Nachrichten 290 (2017) 2619-2628 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that every integral convex polytope is unimodularly equivalent to a face of some Gorenstein Fano polytope. It is then reasonable to ask whether every normal polytope is unimodularly equivalent to a face of some normal Gorenstein Fano polytope. In the present paper, it is shown that, by giving new classes of normal Gorenstein Fano polytopes, each order polytope as well as each chain polytope of dimension $d$ is unimodularly equivalent to a facet of some normal Gorenstein Fano polytopes of dimension $d + 1$. Furthermore, investigation on combinatorial properties, especially, Ehrhart polynomials and volume of these new polytopes will be achieved. Finally, some curious examples of Gorenstein Fano polytopes will be discovered.
