Formation of a giant component in the intersection graph of a random chord diagram
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the number of chords and the number of crossings in the largest component of a random chord diagram when the chords are sparsely crossing. This is equivalent to studying the number of vertices and the number of edges in the largest component of the random intersection graph. Denoting the number of chords by n and the number of crossings by m, when m/nlog(n) tends to a limit in (0,2/π^2), we show that the chord diagram chosen uniformly at random from all the diagrams with given parameters has a component containing almost all the crossings and a positive fraction of chords. On the other hand, when m < n/14, the size of the largest component is of size O(log n). One of the key analytical ingredients is an asymptotic expression for the number of chord diagrams with parameters n and m for m <(2/π^2)n\log(n), based on the Touchard-Riordan formula and the Jacobi identity for Euler partition function.

Computing the partition function for graph homomorphisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the partition function of edge-colored graph homomorphisms, of which the usual partition function of graph homomorphisms is a specialization, and present an efficient algorithm to approximate it in a certain domain. Corollaries include efficient algorithms for computing weighted sums approximating the number of k-colorings and the number of independent sets in a graph, as well as an efficient procedure to distinguish pairs of edge-colored graphs with many color-preserving homomorphisms G --> H from pairs of graphs that need to be substantially modified to acquire a color-preserving homomorphism G --> H.

Bessenrodt-Stanley polynomials and the octahedron recurrence
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that a family of multivariate polynomials recently introduced by Bessenrodt and Stanley can be expressed as solution of the octahedron recurrence with suitable initial data. This leads to generalizations and explicit expressions as path or dimer partition functions.
Multivariate Eulerian polynomials and exclusion processes
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 25 (2016) 486-499 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new combinatorial interpretation of the stationary distribution of the (partially) asymmetric exclusion process on a finite number of sites in terms of decorated alternative trees and colored permutations. The corresponding expressions of the multivariate partition functions are then related to multivariate generalizations of Eulerian polynomials for colored permutations considered recently by N. Williams and the third author, and others. We also discuss stability-- and negative dependence properties satisfied by the partition functions.

Refined Cauchy/Littlewood identities and six-vertex model partition functions: II. Proofs and new conjectures
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 42:555-603 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
We prove two identities of Hall-Littlewood polynomials, which appeared recently in a paper by two of the authors. We also conjecture, and in some cases prove, new identities which relate infinite sums of symmetric polynomials and partition functions associated with symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. These identities generalize those already found in our earlier paper, via the introduction of additional parameters. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity. The right hand side of each identity is (one of the two factors present in) the partition function of the six-vertex model on a relevant domain.

Matching measure, Benjamini-Schramm convergence and the monomer-dimer free energy
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the matching measure of a lattice L as the spectral measure of the tree of self-avoiding walks in L. We connect this invariant to the monomer-dimer partition function of a sequence of finite graphs converging to L. This allows us to express the monomer-dimer free energy of L in terms of the measure. Exploiting an analytic advantage of the matching measure over the Mayer series then leads to new, rigorous bounds on the monomer-dimer free energies of various Euclidean lattices. While our estimates use only the computational data given in previous papers, they improve the known bounds significantly.

Isomorphism of Weighted Trees and Stanley's Conjecture for Caterpillars
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper contributes to a programme initiated by the first author: `How much information about a graph is revealed in its Potts partition function?'. We show that the $W$-polynomial distinguishes non-isomorphic weighted trees of a \emph{good} family. The framework developed to do so also allows us to show that the $W$-polynomial distinguishes non-isomorphic caterpillars. This establishes Stanley's isomorphism conjecture for caterpillars, an extensively studied problem.

Computing the partition function for cliques in a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a deterministic algorithm which, given a graph G with n vertices and an integer 1<m < n, computes in n^{O(ln m)} time the sum of weights w(S) over all m-subsets S of the set of vertices of G, where w(S)=exp{gamma t m +O(1/m)} provided exactly t{m choose 2} pairs of vertices of S span an edge of G for some 0 < t < 1. Here gamma >0 is an absolute constant: we can choose gamma=0.06, and if n > 4m and m > 10, we can choose gamma=0.18. This allows us to tell apart the graphs that do not have m-subsets of high density from the graphs that have sufficiently many m-subsets of high density, even when the probability to hit such a subset at random is exponentially small in m.

The matrix model for dessins d'enfants
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincare Ser D, 1:3 (2014) 337-361 • View PublicationBIB
We present the matrix models that are the generating functions for branched covers of the complex projective line ramified over $0$, $1$, and $\infty$ (Grotendieck's dessins d'enfants) of fixed genus, degree, and the ramification profile at infinity. For general ramifications at other points, the model is the two-logarithm matrix model with the external field studied previously by one of the authors (L.Ch.) and K.Palamarchuk. It lies in the class of the generalised Kontsevich models (GKM) thus being the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy $τ$-function and, upon the shift of times, this model is equivalent to a Hermitian one-matrix model with a general potential whose coefficients are related to the KP times by a Miwa-type transformation. The original model therefore enjoys a topological recursion and can be solved in terms of shifted moments of the standard Hermitian one-matrix model at all genera of the topological expansion. We also derive the matrix model for clean Belyi morphisms, which turns out to be the Kontsevich--Penner model introduced by the authors and Yu. Makeenko. Its partition function is also a KP hierarchy tau function, and this model is in turn equivalent to a Hermitian one-matrix model with a general potential. Finally we prove that the generating function for general two-profile Belyi morphisms is a GKM thus proving that it is also a KP hierarchy tau function in proper times.

Maximal multiplicative properties of partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extending the partition function multiplicatively to a function on partitions, we show that it has a unique maximum at an explicitly given partition for any $n\neq 7$. The basis for this is an inequality for the partition function which seems not to have been noticed before.

Problems on combinatorial properties of primes
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $x\ge0$ let $π(x)$ be the number of primes not exceeding $x$. The asymptotic behaviors of the prime-counting function $π(x)$ and the $n$-th prime $p_n$ have been studied intensively in analytic number theory. Surprisingly, we find that $π(x)$ and $p_n$ have many combinatorial properties which should not be ignored. In this paper we pose 60 open problems on combinatorial properties of primes (including connections between primes and partition functions) for further research. For example, we conjecture that for any integer $n>1$ one of the $n$ numbers $π(n),π(2n),...,π(n^2)$ is prime; we also conjecture that for any integer $n>6$ there exists a prime $p<n$ such that $pn$ is a primitive root modulo $p_n$. One of our conjectures involving the partition function $p(n)$ states that for any prime $p$ there is a primitive root $g<p$ modulo $p$ with $g\in\{p(n):\ n=1,2,3,...\}$.

The Non-Commutative $A_1$ $T$-system and its positive Laurent property
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a non-commutative version of the $A_1$ T-system, which underlies frieze patterns of the integer plane. This system has discrete conserved quantities and has a particular reduction to the known non-commutative Q-system for $A_1$. We solve the system by generalizing the flat $GL_2$ connection method used in the commuting case to a 2$\times$2 flat matrix connection with non-commutative entries. This allows to prove the non-commutative positive Laurent phenomenon for the solutions when expressed in terms of admissible initial data. These are rephrased as partition functions of paths with non-commutative weights on networks, and alternatively of dimer configurations with non-commutative weights on ladder graphs made of chains of squares and hexagons.

Refined Cauchy and Littlewood identities, plane partitions and symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, 137 (2016), 126-165 • View PublicationBIB
We prove and conjecture some new symmetric function identities, which equate the generating series of 1. Plane partitions, subject to certain restrictions and weightings, and 2. Alternating sign matrices, subject to certain symmetry properties. The left hand side of each of our identities is a simple refinement of a relevant Cauchy or Littlewood identity, allowing them to be interpreted as generating series for plane partitions. The right hand side of each identity is a partition function of the six-vertex model, on a relevant domain. These can be interpreted as generating series for alternating sign matrices, using the well known bijection with six-vertex model configurations.

Some Families of Identities for Integer Partition Function
We give a series of recursive identities for the number of partitions with exactly $k$ parts and with constraints on both the minimal difference among the parts and the minimal part. Using these results we demonstrate that the number of partitions of $n$ is equal to the number of partitions of $2n+d{n \choose 2}$ with $n$ $d$-distant parts. We also provide a direct proof for this identity. This work is the result of our aim at finding a bijective proof for Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

From the Ising and Potts models to the general graph homomorphism polynomial
In this note we study some of the properties of the generating polynomial for homomorphisms from a graph to at complete weighted graph on $q$ vertices. We discuss how this polynomial relates to a long list of other well known graph polynomials and the partition functions for different spin models, many of which are specialisations of the homomorphism polynomial. We also identify the smallest graphs which are not determined by their homomorphism polynomials for $q=2$ and $q=3$ and compare this with the corresponding minimal examples for the $U$-polynomial, which generalizes the well known Tutte-polynomal.

A combinatorial proof on partition function parity
One of the most basic results concerning the number-theoretic properties of the partition function $p(n)$ is that $p(n)$ takes each value of parity infinitely often. This statement was first proved by Kolberg in 1959, and it was strengthened by Subbarao in 1966 to say that both $p(2n)$ and $p(2n+1)$ take each value of parity infinitely often. These results have received several other proofs, each relying to some extent on manipulating generating functions. We give a new, self-contained proof of Subbarao's result by constructing a series of bijections and involutions, along the way getting a more general theorem concerning the enumeration of a special subset of integer partitions.
The adjoint representation of a Lie algebra and the support of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
Even though weight multiplicity formulas, such as Kostant's formula, exist their computational use is extremely cumbersome. In fact, even in cases when the multiplicity is well understood, the number of terms considered in Kostant's formula is factorial in the rank of the Lie algebra and the value of the partition function is unknown. In this paper we address the difficult question: What are the contributing terms to the multiplicity of the zero weight in the adjoint representation of a finite dimensional Lie algebra? We describe and enumerate the cardinalities of these sets (through linear homogeneous recurrence relations with constant coefficients) for the classical Lie algebras of Type $B$, $C$, and $D$, the Type $A$ case was computed by the first author in [5]. In addition, we compute the cardinality of the set of contributing terms for non-zero weight spaces in the adjoint representation. In the Type $B$ case, the cardinality of one such non-zero-weight is enumerated by the Fibonacci numbers. We end with a computational proof of a result of Kostant regarding the exponents of the respective Lie algebra for some low rank examples and provide a section with open problems in this area.

Graph theory and Pfaffian representations of Ising partition function
A well known theorem due to Kasteleyn states that the partition function of an Ising model on an arbitrary planar graph can be represented as the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric matrix associated to the graph. This results both embodies the free fermionic nature of any planar Ising model and eventually gives an effective way of computing its partition functions in closed form. An extension of this result to non planar models expresses the partition function as a sum of Pfaffians which number is related to the genus of the oriented surface on which the graph can be embedded. In graph theory, McLane's theorem (1937) gives a characterization of planarity as a property of the cycle space of a graph, and recently, Diestel et al. (2009) extended this approach to embeddings in arbitrary surfaces. Here we show that McLane's approach naturally leads to Kasteleyn's results: McLane characterization of planar graphs is just what is needed to turn an Ising partition function into a Pfaffian. Using this approach, we prove that the Ising partition function on an arbitrary non planar graph can be written as \emph{the real part}of the Pfaffian of a single matrix with coefficients taken in a multicomplex algebra $\C_{\tilde g}$, where $\tilde g$ is the non-orientable genus, or crosscap number, of the embedding surface. Known representations as sums of Pfaffians follow from this result. In particular, Kasteleyn's result which involves $4^g$ matrices with real coefficients, $g$ orientable genus, is also recovered through some algebraic reduction.

A Statistical Model of Current Loops and Magnetic Monopoles
Published in Mathematical Physics, Analysis and Geometry (2015), Volume 18, Issue 1, Article 16 • View PublicationBIB
We formulate a natural model of current loops and magnetic monopoles for arbitrary planar graphs, which we call the monopole-dimer model, and express the partition function of this model as a determinant. We then extend the method of Kasteleyn and Temperley-Fisher to calculate the partition function exactly in the case of rectangular grids. This partition function turns out to be a square of the partition function of an emergent monomer-dimer model when the grid sizes are even. We use this formula to calculate the local monopole density, free energy and entropy exactly. Our technique is a novel determinantal formula for the partition function of a model of vertices and loops for arbitrary graphs.

The Potts model and chromatic functions of graphs
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact. 1 (2014), 47-60 • View PublicationBIB
The $U$-polynomial of Noble and Welsh is known to have intimate connections with the Potts model as well as with several important graph polynomials. For each graph $G$, $U(G)$ is equivalent to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial $XB(G)$. Moreover Sarmiento established the equivalence between $U$ and the polychromate of Brylawski. Loebl defined the $q$-dichromate $B_q(G,x,y)$ as a function of a graph $G$ and three independent variables $q,x,y$, proved that it is equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a certain external field contribution, and conjectured that the $q$-dichromate is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial. He also proposed a stronger conjecture on integer partitions. The aim of this paper is two-fold. We present a construction disproving Loebl's integer partitions conjecture, and we introduce a new function $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ which is also equal to the partition function of the Potts model with variable number of states and with a (different) external field contribution, and we show that $B_{r,q}(G;x,k)$ is equivalent to the $U$-polynomial and to Stanley's symmetric bad colouring polynomial.
