On virtual link invariants
Virtual links were introduced by Kauffman in 1999. We characterize the virtual link invariants that are partition functions of vertex models (as considered by de la Harpe and Jones), both in the real and in the complex case. We show that for any fixed number of states, these invariants form an affine variety. Basic techniques are the first and second fundamental theorem of invariant theory for the orthogonal group (in the sense of Weyl) and some related methods from algebraic geometry.

Geometric RSK correspondence, Whittaker functions and symmetrized random polymers
Published in Invent. math. 197, 361-416 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
We show that the geometric lifting of the RSK correspondence introduced by A.N. Kirillov (2001) is volume preserving with respect to a natural product measure on its domain, and that the integrand in Givental's integral formula for GL(n,R)-Whittaker functions arises naturally in this context. Apart from providing further evidence that Whittaker functions are the natural analogue of Schur polynomials in this setting, our results also provide a new `combinatorial' framework for the study of random polymers. When the input matrix consists of random inverse gamma distributed weights, the probability distribution of a polymer partition function constructed from these weights can be written down explicitly in terms of Whittaker functions. Next we restrict the geometric RSK mapping to symmetric matrices and show that the volume preserving property continues to hold. We determine the probability law of the polymer partition function with inverse gamma weights that are constrained to be symmetric about the main diagonal, with an additional factor on the main diagonal. The third combinatorial mapping studied is a variant of the geometric RSK mapping for triangular arrays, which is again showed to be volume preserving. This leads to a formula for the probability distribution of a polymer model whose paths are constrained to stay below the diagonal. We also show that the analogues of the Cauchy-Littlewood identity in the setting of this paper are equivalent to a collection of Whittaker integral identities conjectured by Bump (1989) and Bump and Friedberg (1990) and proved by Stade (2001, 2002). Our approach leads to new `combinatorial' proofs and generalizations of these identities, with some restrictions on the parameters.

The higher spin generalization of the 6-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The determinantal form of the partition function of the 6-vertex model with domain wall boundary conditions was given by Izergin. It is known that for a special value of the crossing parameter the partition function reduces to a Schur polynomial. Caradoc, Foda and Kitanine computed the partition function of the higher spin generalization of the 6-vertex model. In the present work it is shown that for a special value of the crossing parameter, referred to as the combinatorial point, the partition function reduces to a Macdonald polynomial.

Ising Model Observables and Non-Backtracking Walks
Published in J. Math. Phys. 55, 083304 (2014) • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents an alternative proof of the connection between the partition function of the Ising model on a finite graph $G$ and the set of non-backtracking walks on $G$. The techniques used also give formulas for spin-spin correlation functions in terms of non-backtracking walks. The main tools used are Viennot's theory of heaps of pieces and turning numbers on surfaces.

Eigenvalues and Linear Quasirandom Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let p(k) denote the partition function of k. For each k >= 2, we describe a list of p(k)-1 quasirandom properties that a k-uniform hypergraph can have. Our work connects previous notions on linear hypergraph quasirandomness of Kohayakawa-Rödl-Skokan and Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht and the spectral approach of Friedman-Wigderson. For each of the quasirandom properties that are described, we define a largest and second largest eigenvalue. We show that a hypergraph satisfies these quasirandom properties if and only if it has a large spectral gap. This answers a question of Conlon-Hàn-Person-Schacht. Our work can be viewed as a partial extension to hypergraphs of the seminal spectral results of Chung-Graham-Wilson for graphs.
On the Number of Partitions with Designated Summands
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy introduced the partition function PD(n) as the number of partitions of $n$ with designated summands, where we assume that among parts with equal size, exactly one is designated. They proved that PD(3n+2) is divisible by 3. We obtain a Ramanujan type identity for the generating function of PD(3n+2) which implies the congruence of Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy. For PD(3n), Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy showed that the generating function can be expressed as an infinite product of powers of $(1-q^{2n+1})$ times a function $F(q^2)$. We find an explicit formula for $F(q^2)$, which leads to a formula for the generating function of PD(3n). We also obtain a formula for the generating function of PD(3n+1). Our proofs rely on Chan's identity on Ramanujan's cubic continued fraction and some identities on cubic theta functions. By introducing a rank for the partitions with designed summands, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the congruence of Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy.

Flow polytopes of signed graphs and the Kostant partition function
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 3 (2015) 830-871 • View PublicationBIB
We establish the relationship between volumes of flow polytopes associated to signed graphs and the Kostant partition function. A special case of this relationship, namely, when the graphs are signless, has been studied in detail by Baldoni and Vergne using techniques of residues. In contrast with their approach, we provide entirely combinatorial proofs inspired by the work of Postnikov and Stanley on flow polytopes. As a fascinating special family of flow polytopes, we study the Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes. Motivated by the beautiful volume formula $\prod_{k=1}^{n-2} Cat(k)$ for the type $A_n$ version, where $Cat(k)$ is the $k$th Catalan number, we introduce type $C_{n+1}$ and $D_{n+1}$ Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytopes along with intriguing conjectures pertaining to their properties.

Restricted integer partition functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
For two sets $A$ and $M$ of positive integers and for a positive integer $n$, let $p(n,A,M)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with parts in $A$ and multiplicities in $M$, that is, the number of representations of $n$ in the form $n=\sum_{a \in A} m_a a$ where $m_a \in M \cup {0}$ for all $a$, and all numbers $m_a$ but finitely many are 0. It is shown that there are infinite sets $A$ and $M$ so that $p(n,A,M)=1$ for every positive integer $n$. This settles (in a strong form) a problem of Canfield and Wilf. It is also shown that there is an infinite set $M$ and constants $c$ and $n_0$ so that for $A={k!}_{k \geq 1}$ or for $A=\{k^k\}_{k \geq 1}$, $0<p(n,A,M) \leq n^c$ for all $n>n_0$. This answers a question of Ljujić and Nathanson.

On weighted graph homomorphisms
For given graphs $G$ and $H$, let $|Hom(G,H)|$ denote the set of graph homomorphisms from $G$ to $H$. We show that for any finite, $n$-regular, bipartite graph $G$ and any finite graph $H$ (perhaps with loops), $|Hom(G,H)|$ is maximum when $G$ is a disjoint union of $K_{n,n}$'s. This generalizes a result of J. Kahn on the number of independent sets in a regular bipartite graph. We also give the asymptotics of the logarithm of $|Hom(G,H)|$ in terms of a simply expressed parameter of $H$. We also consider weighted versions of these results which may be viewed as statements about the partition functions of certain models of physical systems with hard constraints.

Bounding the partition function of spin-systems
With a graph $G=(V,E)$ we associate a collection of non-negative real weights $\cup_{v\in V}{λ_{i,v}:1\leq i \leq m} \cup \cup_{uv \in E} {λ_{ij,uv}:1\leq i \leq j \leq m}$. We consider the probability distribution on ${f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m}}$ in which each $f$ occurs with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}λ_{f(v),v}\prod_{uv \in E}λ_{f(u)f(v),uv}$. Many well-known statistical physics models, including the Ising model with an external field and the hard-core model with non-uniform activities, can be framed as such a distribution. We obtain an upper bound, independent of $G$, for the partition function (the normalizing constant which turns the assignment of weights on $\{f:V\rightarrow{1,...,m\}}$ into a probability distribution) in the case when $G$ is a regular bipartite graph. This generalizes a bound obtained by Galvin and Tetali who considered the simpler weight collection $\{λ_i:1 \leq i \leq m\} \cup \{λ_{ij}:1 \leq i \leq j \leq m\}$ with each $λ_{ij}$ either 0 or 1 and with each $f$ chosen with probability proportional to $\prod_{v \in V}λ_{f(v)}\prod_{uv \in E}λ_{f(u)f(v)}$. Our main tools are a generalization to list homomorphisms of a result of Galvin and Tetali on graph homomorphisms and a straightforward second-moment computation.

Matchings and Independent Sets of a Fixed Size in Regular Graphs
We use an entropy based method to study two graph maximization problems. We upper bound the number of matchings of fixed size $\ell$ in a $d$-regular graph on $N$ vertices. For $\frac{2\ell}{N}$ bounded away from 0 and 1, the logarithm of the bound we obtain agrees in its leading term with the logarithm of the number of matchings of size $\ell$ in the graph consisting of $\frac{N}{2d}$ disjoint copies of the complete bipartite graph $K_{d,d}$. This provides asymptotic evidence for a conjecture of S. Friedland {\it et al.}. We also obtain an analogous result for independent sets of a fixed size in regular graphs, giving asymptotic evidence for a conjecture of J. Kahn. Our bounds on the number of matchings and independent sets of a fixed size are derived from bounds on the partition function (or generating polynomial) for matchings and independent sets.

The probability of generating the symmetric group with a commutator condition
Let B(n) be the set of pairs of permutations from the symmetric group of degree n with a 3-cycle commutator, and let A(n) be the set of those pairs which generate the symmetric or the alternating group of degree n. We find effective formulas for calculating the cardinalities of both sets. More precisely, we show that #B(n)/n! is a discrete convolution of the partition function and a linear combination of divisor functions, while #A(n)/n! is the product of a polynomial and Jordan's totient function. In particular, it follows that the probability that a pair of random permutations with a 3-cycle commutator generates the symmetric or the alternating group of degree n tends to zero as n tends to infinity, which makes a contrast with Dixon's classical result. Key elements of our proofs are Jordan's theorem from the 19th century, a formula by Ramanujan from the 20th century and a technique of square-tiled surfaces developed by French mathematicians Lelievre and Royer in the beginning of the 21st century. This paper uses and highlights elegant connections between algebra, geometry, and number theory.

Two truncated identities of Gauss
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 120 (2013) 700-707 • View PublicationBIB
Two new expansions for partial sums of Gauss' triangular and square numbers series are given. As a consequence, we derive a family of inequalities for the overpartition function $\bar{p}(n)$ and for the partition function $p_1(n)$ counting the partitions of $n$ with distinct odd parts. Some further inequalities for variations of partition function are proposed as conjectures.

Quantum cohomology via vicious and osculating walkers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We relate the counting of rational curves intersecting Schubert varieties of the Grassmannian to the counting of certain non-intersecting lattice paths on the cylinder, so-called vicious and osculating walkers. These lattice paths form exactly solvable statistical mechanics models and are obtained from solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. The eigenvectors of the transfer matrices of these models yield the idempotents of the Verlinde algebra of the gauged u(n)-WZNW model. The latter is known to be closely related to the small quantum cohomology ring of the Grassmannian. We establish further that the partition functions of the vicious and osculating walker model are given in terms of Postnikov's toric Schur functions and can be interpreted as generating functions for Gromov-Witten invariants.

Counting Group Valued Graph Colorings
There are many variations on partition functions for graph homomorphisms or colorings. The case considered here is a counting or hard constraint problem in which the range or color graph carries a free and vertex transitive Abelian group action so that the colors are identified with the elements of this group. A Fourier transform is used to obtain an expansion for the numbers of colorings with terms indexed by isthmus free subgraphs of the domain. The terms are products of a polynomial in the edge density a of the color graph and the number of colorings of the indexing subgraph of the domain into the complementary color graph. The polynomial in a is independent of the color group and the term has order (1-a) to the r where r is the number of vertices minus the number of components in the indexing subgraph. Thus if (1-a) is small there is a main term indexed by the empty subgraph which is a polynomial in a and the first dependence on the coloring group occurs in the lowest order corrections which are indexed by the shortest cycles in the graph and are of order (1-a) to the g-1 where g is the length of these shortest cycles. The main theorem is stated as a reciprocity law. Examples are given in which the coloring groups are long cycles and products of short cycles and adjacent vertices are required to have distant rather than distinct colors. The chromatic polynomial of a graph corresponds to using any group and taking the allowed set to be the complement of the identity.

Conservation Laws of Random Matrix Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper presents an overview of the derivation and significance of recently derived conservation laws for the matrix moments of Hermitean random matrices with dominant exponential weights that may be either even or odd. This is based on a detailed asymptotic analysis of the partition function for these unitary ensembles and their scaling limits. As a particular application we derive closed form expressions for the coefficients of the genus expansion for the associated free energy in a particular class of dominant even weights. These coefficients are generating functions for enumerating g-maps, related to graphical combinatorics on Riemann surfaces. This generalizes and resolves a 30+ year old conjecture in the physics literature related to quantum gravity.

Multiply-refined enumeration of alternating sign matrices
Published in Adv. Math. 245 (2013) 439-499 • View PublicationBIB
Four natural boundary statistics and two natural bulk statistics are considered for alternating sign matrices (ASMs). Specifically, these statistics are the positions of the 1's in the first and last rows and columns of an ASM, and the numbers of generalized inversions and -1's in an ASM. Previously-known and related results for the exact enumeration of ASMs with prescribed values of some of these statistics are discussed in detail. A quadratic relation which recursively determines the generating function associated with all six statistics is then obtained. This relation also leads to various new identities satisfied by generating functions associated with fewer than six of the statistics. The derivation of the relation involves combining the Desnanot-Jacobi determinant identity with the Izergin-Korepin formula for the partition function of the six-vertex model with domain-wall boundary conditions.

The Bethe Partition Function of Log-supermodular Graphical Models
Sudderth, Wainwright, and Willsky have conjectured that the Bethe approximation corresponding to any fixed point of the belief propagation algorithm over an attractive, pairwise binary graphical model provides a lower bound on the true partition function. In this work, we resolve this conjecture in the affirmative by demonstrating that, for any graphical model with binary variables whose potential functions (not necessarily pairwise) are all log-supermodular, the Bethe partition function always lower bounds the true partition function. The proof of this result follows from a new variant of the "four functions" theorem that may be of independent interest.

More on the O(n) model on random maps via nested loops: loops with bending energy
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45 (2012) 275206 • View PublicationBIB
We continue our investigation of the nested loop approach to the O(n) model on random maps, by extending it to the case where loops may visit faces of arbitrary degree. This allows to express the partition function of the O(n) loop model as a specialization of the multivariate generating function of maps with controlled face degrees, where the face weights are determined by a fixed point condition. We deduce a functional equation for the resolvent of the model, involving some ring generating function describing the immediate vicinity of the loops. When the ring generating function has a single pole, the model is amenable to a full solution. Physically, such situation is realized upon considering loops visiting triangles only and further weighting these loops by some local bending energy. Our model interpolates between the two previously solved cases of triangulations without bending energy and quadrangulations with rigid loops. We analyze the phase diagram of our model in details and derive in particular the location of its non-generic critical points, which are in the universality classes of the dense and dilute O(n) model coupled to 2D quantum gravity. Similar techniques are also used to solve a twisting loop model on quadrangulations where loops are forced to make turns within each visited square. Along the way, we revisit the problem of maps with controlled, possibly unbounded, face degrees and give combinatorial derivations of the one-cut lemma and of the functional equation for the resolvent.
