Affine partitions and affine Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a bijection between certain colored partitions and the elements in the quotient of an affine Weyl group modulo its Weyl group. By Bott's formula these colored partitions give rise to some partition identities. In certain types, these identities have previously appeared in the work of Bousquet-Melou-Eriksson, Eriksson-Eriksson and Reiner. In other types the identities appear to be new. For type $A_{n}$, the affine colored partitions form another family of combinatorial objects in bijection with $n+1$-core partitions and $n$-bounded partitions. Our main application is to characterize the rationally smooth Schubert varieties in the affine Grassmannians in terms of affine partitions and a generalization of Young's lattice which refines weak order and is a subposet of Bruhat order. Several of the proofs are computer assisted.

On the universal Gröbner bases of varieties of minimal degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
A universal Gröbner basis of an ideal is the union of all its reduced Gröbner bases. It is contained in the Graver basis, the set of all primitive elements. Obtaining an explicit description of either of these sets, or even a sharp degree bound for their elements, is a nontrivial task. In their '95 paper, Graham, Diaconis and Sturmfels give a nice combinatorial description of the Graver basis for any rational normal curve in terms of primitive partition identities. Their result is extended here to rational normal scrolls. The description of the Graver bases is given in terms of colored partition identities. This leads to a sharp bound on the degree of Graver basis elements, which is always attained by a circuit. Finally, for any variety obtained from a scroll by a sequence of projections to some of the coordinate hyperplanes, the degree of any element in any reduced Gröbner basis is bounded by the degree of the variety.

Partition Identities and the Coin Exchange Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
The number of partitions of n into parts divisible by a or b equals the number of partitions of n in which each part and each difference of two parts is expressible as a non-negative integer combination of a or b. This generalizes identities of MacMahon and Andrews. The analogous identities for three or more integers (in place of a,b) hold in certain cases.

Shifted and Shiftless Partition Identities II
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let S and T be sets of positive integers and let a be a fixed positive integer. An a-shifted partition identity has the form p(S,n)=p(T,n-a), for all n greater or equal to a. Here p(S,n) is the number partitions of n whose parts are elements of S. For all known nontrivial shifted partition identities, the sets S and T are unions of arithmetic progressions modulo M for some M. In 1987, Andrews found two 1-shifted examples (M=32, 40) and asked whether there were any more. In 1989, Kalvade responded with a further six. In 2000, the first author found 59 new 1-shifted identities using a computer search and showed how these could be proved using the theory of modular functions. Modular transformation of certain shifted identities leads to shiftless partition identities. Again let a be a fixed positive integer, and S, T be distinct sets of positive integers. A shiftless partition identity has the form p(S,n)=p(T,n), for all n not equal to a. In this paper, we show, except in one case, how all known 1-shifted and shiftless identities follow from a four parameter theta function identity due to Jacobi. New shifted and shiftless partition identities are proved.
Analytic proof of the partition identity $A_{5,3,3}(n) = B^0_{5,3,3}(n)$
Published in Ramanujan J. 15 (2008), 77-86. • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give an analytic proof of the identity $A_{5,3,3}(n) =B^0_{5,3,3}(n)$, where $A_{5,3,3}(n)$ counts the number of partitions of $n$ subject to certain restrictions on their parts, and $B^0_{5,3,3}(n)$ counts the number of partitions of $n$ subject to certain other restrictions on their parts, both too long to be stated in the abstract. Our proof establishes actually a refinement of that partition identity. The original identity was first discovered by the first author jointly with M. Ruby Salestina and S. R. Sudarshan in ["A new theorem on partitions," Proc. Int. Conference on Special Functions, IMSC, Chennai, India, September 23-27, 2002; to appear], where it was also given a combinatorial proof, thus responding a question of Andrews.

Partition Identities for the Multiple Zeta Function
Published in pp. 19--29 in Zeta Functions, Topology, and Quantum Physics, Developments in Mathematics, Vol. 14, Springer, New York, 2005. T. Aoki, S. Kanemitsu, M. Nakahara, Y. Ohno (eds.) ISBN: 978-0-387-24972-8. MR 2179270 (2006f:11105) • View PublicationBIB
We define a class of expressions for the multiple zeta function, and show how to determine whether an expression in the class vanishes identically. The class of such identities, which we call partition identities, is shown to coincide with the class of identities that can be derived as a consequence of the stuffle multiplication rule for multiple zeta values.

A Four-parameter Partition Identity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new partition identity and give a combinatorial proof of our result. This generalizes a result of Andrew's in which he considers the generation function for partitions with respect to size, number of odd parts, and number of odd parts of the conjugate.

A limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation and related partition identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
By considering a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation, we prove a weighted partition theorem involving odd parts differing by >= 4. A two parameter refinement of this theorem is then deduced from a quartic reformulation of Goellnitz's (Big) theorem due to Alladi, and this leads to a two parameter extension of Jacobi's triple product identity for theta functions. Finally, refinements of certain modular identities of Alladi connected to the Goellnitz-Gordon series are shown to follow from a limiting form of the q-Dixon_4φ_3 summation.

A new partition identity coming from complex dynamics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a new identity involving compositions (i.e. ordered partitions of natural numbers). The Formula has its origin in complex dynamical systems and appears when counting, in the polynomial family $\{f_c:z \mapsto z^d + c \}$, periodic critical orbits with equivalent itineraries. We give two different proofs of the identity; one following the original approach in dynamics and another with purely combinatorial methods.

New Weighted Rogers-Ramanujan Partition Theorems and their Implications
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper has a two-fold purpose. First, by considering a reformulation of a deep theorem of Göllnitz, we obtain a new weighted partition identity involving the Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, namely, partitions into parts differing by at least two. Consequences of this include Jacobi's celebrated triple product identity for theta functions, Sylvester's famous refinement of Euler's theorem, as well as certain weighted partition identities. Next, by studying partitions with prescribed bounds on successive ranks and replacing these with weighted Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, we obtain two new sets of theorems - a set of three theorems involving partitions into parts $\not\equiv 0, \pm i$ ($mod$ 6), and a set of three theorems involving partitions into parts $\not\equiv 0, \pm i$ ($mod$ 7), $i=1,2,3$.

N-graphs, modular Sidon and sum-free sets, and partition identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using a new graphical representation for partitions, the author obtains a family of partition identities associated with partitions into distinct parts of an arithmetic progression, or, more generally, with partitions into distinct parts of a set that is a finite union of arithmetic progressions associated with a modular sum-free Sidon set. Partition identities are also constructed for sets associated with modular sum-free sets.
