Computation of q-Binomial Coefficients with the $P(n,m)$ Integer Partition Function
Using $P(n,m)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ parts, which was the subject of an earlier paper, $P(n,m,p)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ parts with each part at most $p$, can be computed in $O(n^2)$, and the q-binomial coefficient can be computed in $O(n^3)$. Using the definition of the q-binomial coefficient, some properties of the q-binomial coefficient and $P(n,m,p)$ are derived. The q-multinomial coefficient can be computed as a product of q-binomial coefficients. A formula for $Q(n,m,p)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ into exactly $m$ distinct parts with each part at most $p$, is given. Some formulas for the number of integer partitions with each part between a minimum and a maximum are derived. A computer algebra program is listed implementing these algorithms using the computer algebra program of the earlier paper.

Double-cover-based analysis of the Bethe permanent of non-negative matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
The permanent of a non-negative matrix appears naturally in many information processing scenarios. Because of the intractability of the permanent beyond small matrices, various approximation techniques have been developed in the past. In this paper, we study the Bethe approximation of the permanent and add to the body of literature showing that this approximation is very well behaved in many respects. Our main technical tool are topological double covers of the normal factor graph whose partition function equals the permanent of interest, along with a transformation of these double covers.

Ramsey-type problems on induced covers and induced partitions toward the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gyárfás and Sumner independently conjectured that for every tree $T$, there exists a function $f_{T}:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ such that every $T$-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq f_{T}(ω(G))$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the {\it chromatic number} and the {\it clique number} of $G$, respectively. This conjecture gives a solution of a Ramsey-type problem on the chromatic number. For a graph $G$, the {\it induced SP-cover number ${\rm inspc}(G)$} (resp. the {\it induced SP-partition number ${\rm inspp}(G)$}) of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a family $\mathcal{P}$ of induced subgraphs of $G$ such that each element of $\mathcal{P}$ is a star or a path and $\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(G)$ (resp. $\dot\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(G)$). Such two invariants are directly related concepts to the chromatic number. From the viewpoint of this fact, we focus on Ramsey-type problems for two invariants ${\rm inspc}$ and ${\rm inspp}$, which are analogies of the Gyárfás-Sumner conjecture, and settle them. As a corollary of our results, we also settle other Ramsey-type problems for widely studied invariants.

q-Stirling numbers in type B
Stirling numbers, which count partitions of a set and permutations in the symmetric group, have found extensive application in combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. We study analogues and q-analogues of these numbers corresponding to the Coxeter group of type B. In particular, we show how they are related to complete homogeneous and elementary symmetric polynomials; demonstrate how they q-count signed partitions and permutations; compute their ordinary, exponential, and q-exponential generating functions; and prove various identities about them. Ordered analogues of the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind have recently appeared in conjectures of Zabrocki and of Swanson--Wallach concerning the Hilbert series of certain super coinvariant algebras. We provide conjectural bases for these algebras and show that they have the correct Hilbert series.

Detailed asymptotic expansions for partitions into powers
Here we examine the number of ways to partition an integer $n$ into $k$th powers when $n$ is large. Simplified proofs of some asymptotic results of Wright are given using the saddle-point method, including exact formulas for the expansion coefficients. The convexity and log-concavity of these partitions is shown for large $n$, and the stronger conjectures of Ulas are proved. The asymptotics of Wright's generalized Bessel functions are also treated.

Combinatorial constructions of generating functions of cylindric partitions with small profiles into unrestricted or distinct parts
In this paper, cylindric partitions into profiles $c=(1,1)$ and $c=(2,0)$ are considered. The generating functions into unrestricted cylindric partitions and cylindric partitions into distinct parts with these profiles are constructed. The constructions are combinatorial and they connect the cylindric partitions with ordinary partitions.

The monopole-dimer model on Cartesian products of plane graphs
Published in Combinatorial Theory, Volume 3 no. 3, (2023), Article #3, 29pp • View PublicationBIB
The monopole-dimer model is a signed variant of the monomer-dimer model which has determinantal structure. We extend the monopole-dimer model for planar graphs (Math. Phys. Anal. Geom., 2015) to Cartesian products thereof and show that the partition function of this model can be expressed as a determinant of a generalised signed adjacency matrix. We then show that the partition function is independent of the orientations of the planar graphs so long as the orientations are Pfaffian. When these planar graphs are bipartite, we show that the computation of the partition function becomes especially simple. We then give an explicit product formula for the partition function of three-dimensional grid graphs a la Kasteleyn and Temperley--Fischer, which turns out to be fourth power of a polynomial when all grid lengths are even. Finally, we generalise this product formula to $d$ dimensions, again obtaining an explicit product formula. We conclude with a discussion on asymptotic formulas for the free energy and monopole densities.

Haglund's positivity conjecture for multiplicity one pairs
Haglund's conjecture states that $\dfrac{\langle J_λ(q,q^k),s_μ\rangle}{(1-q)^{|λ|}} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}[q]$ for all partitions $λ,μ$ and all non-negative integers $k$, where $J_λ$ is the integral form Macdonald symmetric function and $s_μ$ is the Schur function. This paper proves Haglund's conjecture in the cases when the pair $(λ,μ)$ satisfies $K_{λ,μ}=1$ or $K_{μ',λ'}=1$ where $K$ denotes the Kostka number. We also obtain some general results about the transition matrix between Macdonald symmetric functions and Schur functions.

The Chromatic Number of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with Multiple Forbidden Distances
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $A\subset\mathbb{R}_{>0}$ be a finite set of distances, and let $G_{A}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ be the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and edge set $\{(x,y)\in\mathbb{R}^{n}:\ \|x-y\|_{2}\in A\}$, and let $χ(\mathbb{R}^{n},A)=χ\left(G_{A}(\mathbb{R}^{n})\right)$. Erdős asked about the growth rate of the $m$-distance chromatic number \[ \barχ(\mathbb{R}^{n};m)=\max_{|A|=m}χ(\mathbb{R}^{n},A). \] We improve the best existing lower bound for $\barχ(\mathbb{R}^{n};m)$, and show that \[ \barχ(\mathbb{R}^{n};m)\geq\left(Γ_χ\sqrt{m+1}+o(1)\right)^{n} \] where $Γ_χ=0.79983\dots$ is an explicit constant. Our full result is more general, and applies to cliques in this graph. Let $χ_{k}(G)$ denote the minimum number of colors needed to color $G$ so that no color contains a $(k+1)$-clique, and let $\barχ_{k}(\mathbb{R}^{n};m)$ denote the largest value this takes for any distance set of size $m$ . Using the Partition Rank Method, we show that \[ \barχ_{k}(\mathbb{R}^{n};m)>\left(Γ_χ\sqrt{\frac{m+1}{k}}+o(1)\right)^{n}. \]
Khinchin families, set constructions, partitions and exponentials
In this paper, we give a simple criterion to verify that functions of the form $e^g$ are in the Hayman class when $g$ is a power series with nonnegative coefficients. Thus, using the Hayman and Báez-Duarte formulas, we obtain asymptotics for the coefficients of generating functions that arise in many examples of set construction in analytic combinatorics. This new criterion greatly simplifies that obtained previously by the authors.

Zeros in the Character Tables of Symmetric Groups with an $\ell$-Core Index
Published in Canadian Mathematical Bulletin, 66(2), 467-476 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{C}_n =\left [χ_λ(μ)\right]_{λ, μ}$ be the character table for $S_n,$ where the indices $λ$ and $μ$ run over the $p(n)$ many integer partitions of $n.$ In this note we study $Z_{\ell}(n),$ the number of zero entries $χ_λ(μ)$ in $\mathcal{C}_n,$ where $λ$ is an $\ell$-core partition of $n.$ For every prime $\ell\geq 5,$ we prove an asymptotic formula of the form $$ Z_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}\cdot σ_{\ell}(n+δ_{\ell})p(n)\gg_{\ell} n^{\frac{\ell-5}{2}}e^{π\sqrt{2n/3}},$$ where $σ_{\ell}(n)$ is a twisted Legendre symbol divisor function, $δ_{\ell}:=(\ell^2-1)/24,$ and $1/α_{\ell}>0$ is a normalization of the Dirichlet $L$-value $L\left(\left(\frac{\cdot}{\ell}\right),\frac{\ell-1}{2}\right).$ For primes $\ell$ and $n>\ell^6/24,$ we show that $χ_λ(μ)=0$ whenever $λ$ and $μ$ are both $\ell$-cores. Furthermore, if $Z^*_{\ell}(n)$ is the number of zero entries indexed by two $\ell$-cores, then for $\ell\geq 5$ we obtain the asymptotic $$ Z^*_{\ell}(n)\sim α_{\ell}^2 \cdot σ_{\ell}( n+δ_{\ell})^2 \gg_{\ell} n^{\ell-3}. $$

A Comparison of Integer Partitions Based on Smallest Part
Published • View PublicationBIB
For positive integers $n, L$ and $s$, consider the following two sets that both contain partitions of $n$ with the difference between the largest and smallest parts bounded by $L$: the first set contains partitions with smallest part $s$, while the second set contains partitions with smallest part at least $s+1$. Let $G_{L,s}(q)$ be the generating series whose coefficient of $q^n$ is difference between the sizes of the above two sets of partitions. This generating series was introduced by Berkovich and Uncu in 2019. Previous results concentrated on the nonnegativity of $G_{L,s}(q)$ in the cases $s=1$ and $s=2$. In the present paper, we show the eventual positivity of $G_{L,s}(q)$ for general s and also find a precise nonnegativity result for the case $s=3$.
Hook length and symplectic content in partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The dimension of an irreducible representation of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2n)$, or $SO(n)$ is given by the respective hook-length and content formulas for the corresponding partition. The first author, inspired by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula, conjectured combinatorial interpretations of analogous expressions involving hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. We prove special cases of these conjectures. In the process, we show that partitions of $n$ with all symplectic contents non-zero are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into distinct even parts. We also present Beck-type companions to this identity. In this context, we give the parity of the number of partitions into distinct parts with odd (respectively, even) rank. We study the connection between the sum of hook-lengths and the sum of inversions in the binary representation of a partition. In addition, we introduce a new partition statistic, the $x$-ray list of a partition, and explore its connection with distinct partitions as well as partitions maximally contained in a given staircase partition.

Random cluster model on regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ with $v(G)$ vertices the partition function of the random cluster model is defined by $$Z_G(q,w)=\sum_{A\subseteq E(G)}q^{k(A)}w^{|A|},$$ where $k(A)$ denotes the number of connected components of the graph $(V,A)$. Furthermore, let $g(G)$ denote the girth of the graph $G$, that is, the length of the shortest cycle. In this paper we show that if $(G_n)_n$ is a sequence of $d$-regular graphs such that the girth $g(G_n)\to \infty$, then the limit $$\lim_{n\to \infty} \frac{1}{v(G_n)}\ln Z_{G_n}(q,w)=\ln Φ_{d,q,w}$$ exists if $q\geq 2$ and $w\geq 0$. The quantity $Φ_{d,q,w}$ can be computed as follows. Let $$Φ_{d,q,w}(t):=\left(\sqrt{1+\frac{w}{q}}\cos(t)+\sqrt{\frac{(q-1)w}{q}}\sin(t)\right)^{d}+(q-1)\left(\sqrt{1+\frac{w}{q}}\cos(t)-\sqrt{\frac{w}{q(q-1)}}\sin(t)\right)^{d},$$ then $$Φ_{d,q,w}:=\max_{t\in [-π,π]}Φ_{d,q,w}(t),$$ The same conclusion holds true for a sequence of random $d$-regular graphs with probability one. Our result extends the work of Dembo, Montanari, Sly and Sun for the Potts model (integer $q$), and we prove a conjecture of Helmuth, Jenssen and Perkins about the phase transition of the random cluster model with fixed $q$.

Berkovich-Uncu type Partition Inequalities Concerning Impermissible Sets and Perfect Power Frequencies
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Rattan and the first author (Ann. Comb. 25 (2021) 697-728) proved a conjectured inequality of Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. 23 (2019) 263-284) concerning partitions with an impermissible part. In this article, we generalize this inequality upon considering t impermissible parts. We compare these with partitions whose certain parts appear with a frequency which is a perfect t^{th} power. Our inequalities hold after a certain bound, which for given t is a polynomial in s, a major improvement over the previously known bound in the case t=1. To prove these inequalities, our methods involve constructing injective maps between the relevant sets of partitions. The construction of these maps crucially involves concepts from analysis and calculus, such as explicit maps used to prove countability of N^t, and Jensen's inequality for convex functions, and then merge them with techniques from number theory such as Frobenius numbers, congruence classes, binary numbers and quadratic residues. We also show a connection of our results to colored partitions. Finally, we pose an open problem which seems to be related to power residues and the almost universality of diagonal ternary quadratic forms.

Measurable domatic partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a compact Polish group of finite topological dimension. For a countably infinite subset $S\subseteq Γ$, a domatic $\aleph_0$-partition (for its Schreier graph on $Γ$) is a partial function $f:Γ\rightharpoonup\mathbb{N}$ such that for every $x\in Γ$, one has $f[S\cdot x]=\mathbb{N}$. We show that a continuous domatic $\aleph_0$-partition exists, if and only if a Baire measurable domatic $\aleph_0$-partition exists, if and only if the topological closure of $S$ is uncountable. A Haar measurable domatic $\aleph_0$-partition exists for all choices of $S$. We also investigate domatic partitions in the general descriptive graph combinatorial setting.

An example of $A_2$ Rogers-Ramanujan bipartition identities of level 3
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give manifestly positive Andrews-Gordon type series for the level 3 standard modules of the affine Lie algebra of type $A^{(1)}_2$. We also give corresponding bipartition identities, which have representation theoretic interpretations via the vertex operators. Our proof is based on the Borodin product formula, the Corteel-Welsh recursion for the cylindric partitions, a $q$-version of Sister Celine's technique and a generalization of Andrews' partition ideals by finite automata due to Takigiku and the author.

$P$-strict promotion and $Q$-partition rowmotion: the graded case
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 115 (2024), no. 103776, 24 pp • View PublicationBIB
Promotion and rowmotion are intriguing actions in dynamical algebraic combinatorics which have inspired much work in recent years. In this paper, we study $P$-strict labelings of a finite, graded poset $P$ of rank $n$ and labels at most $q$, which generalize semistandard Young tableaux with $n$ rows and entries at most $q$, under promotion. These $P$-strict labelings are in equivariant bijection with $Q$-partitions under rowmotion, where $Q$ equals the product of $P$ and a chain of $q-n-1$ elements. We study the case where $P$ equals the product of chains in detail, yielding new homomesy and order results in the realm of tableaux and beyond. Furthermore, we apply the bijection to the cases in which $P$ is a minuscule poset and when $P$ is the three element $V$ poset. Finally, we give resonance results for promotion on $P$-strict labelings and rowmotion on $Q$-partitions.

Chain enumeration, partition lattices and polynomials with only real roots
Published • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. The chain polynomials of the partition lattices and their standard type $B$ analogues are shown to have only real roots. The real-rootedness of the chain polynomial is conjectured for all geometric lattices and is shown to be preserved by the pyramid and the prism operations on Cohen--Macaulay posets. As a result, new families of convex polytopes whose face lattices have real-rooted chain polynomials are presented. An application to the face enumeration of the second barycentric subdivision of the boundary complex of the simplex is also included.
