Distributions of several infinite families of mesh patterns
Brändén and Claesson introduced mesh patterns to provide explicit expansions for certain permutation statistics as linear combinations of (classical) permutation patterns. The first systematic study of avoidance of mesh patterns was conducted by Hilmarsson et al., while the first systematic study of the distribution of mesh patterns was conducted by the first two authors.
In this paper, we provide far-reaching generalizations for 8 known distribution results and 5 known avoidance results related to mesh patterns by giving distribution or avoidance formulas for certain infinite families of mesh patterns in terms of distribution or avoidance formulas for smaller patterns. Moreover, as a corollary to a general result, we find the distribution of one more mesh pattern of length 2.
Faster and simpler algorithms for finding large patterns in permutations
Permutation patterns and pattern avoidance have been intensively studied in combinatorics and computer science, going back at least to the seminal work of Knuth on stack-sorting (1968). Perhaps the most natural algorithmic question in this area is deciding whether a given permutation of length $n$ contains a given pattern of length $k$.
In this work we give two new algorithms for this well-studied problem, one whose running time is $n^{0.44k+o(k)}$, and one whose running time is the better of $O(1.6181^n)$ and $n^{k/2+o(k)}$. These results improve the earlier best bounds of Ahal and Rabinovich (2000), and Bruner and Lackner (2012), and are the fastest algorithms for the problem when $k = Ω(\log n)$. When $k = o(\log n)$, the parameterized algorithm of Guillemot and Marx (2013) dominates.
Our second algorithm uses polynomial space and is significantly simpler than all previous approaches with comparable running times, including an $n^{k/2+o(k)}$ algorithm proposed by Guillemot and Marx. Our approach can be summarized as follows: "for every matching of the even-valued entries of the pattern, try to match all odd-valued entries left-to-right". For the special case of patterns that are Jordan-permutations, we show an improved, subexponential running time.
Most principal permutation classes have nonrational generating functions
We prove that for any fixed $n$, and for most permutation patterns $q$, the number $\textup{Av}_{n,\ell}(q)$ of $q$-avoiding permutations of length $n$ that consist of $\ell$ skew blocks is a monotone decreasing function of $\ell$. We then show that this implies that for most patterns $q$, the generating function $\sum_{n\geq 0} \textup{Av}_n(q)z^n$ of the sequence $\textup{Av}_n(q)$ of the numbers of $q$-avoiding permutations is not rational. Placing our results in a broader context, we show that for rational power series $F(z)$ and $G(z)$ with nonnegative real coefficients, the relation $F(z)=1/(1-G(z))$ is supercritical, while for most permutation patterns $q$, the corresponding relation is not supercritical.

We consider the distribution of ascents, descents, peaks, valleys, double ascents, and double descents over permutations avoiding a set of patterns. Many of these statistics have already been studied over sets of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3. However, the distribution of peaks over 321-avoiding permutations is new and we relate it statistics on Dyck paths. We also obtain new interpretations of a number of well-known combinatorial sequences by studying these statistics over permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3.
Exhaustive generation for permutations avoiding a (colored) regular sets of patterns

Despite the fact that the field of pattern avoiding permutations has been skyrocketing over the last two decades, there are very few exhaustive generating algorithms for such classes of permutations. In this paper we introduce the notions of regular and colored regular set of forbidden patterns, which are particular cases of right-justified sets of forbidden patterns. We show the (colored) regularity of several sets of forbidden patterns (some of them involving variable length patterns) and we derive a general framework for the efficient generation of permutations avoiding them. The obtained generating algorithms are based on succession functions, a notion which is a byproduct of the ECO method introduced in the context of enumeration and random generation of combinatorial objects by Barcucci et al. in 1999, and developed later by Bacchelli et al. in 2004, for instance. For some classes of permutations falling under our general framework, the corresponding counting sequences are classical in combinatorics, such as Pell, Fibonacci, Catalan, Schröder and binomial transform of Padovan sequence.
What is an answer? - remarks, results and problems on PIO formulas in combinatorial enumeration, part I
For enumerative problems, i.e. computable functions f from N to Z, we define the notion of an effective (or closed) formula. It is an algorithm computing f(n) in the number of steps that is polynomial in the combined size of the input n and the output f(n), both written in binary notation. We discuss many examples of enumerative problems for which such closed formulas are, or are not, known. These problems include (i) linear recurrence sequences and holonomic sequences, (ii) integer partitions, (iii) pattern-avoiding permutations, (iv) triangle-free graphs and (v) regular graphs. In part I we discuss problems (i) and (ii) and defer (iii)--(v) to part II. Besides other results, we prove here that every linear recurrence sequence of integers has an effective formula in our sense.

In the context of the genome rearrangement problem, we analyze two well known models, namely the block transposition and the prefix block transposition models, by exploiting the connection with the notion of permutation pattern. More specifically, for any $k$, we provide a characterization of the set of permutations having distance $\leq k$ from the identity (which is known to be a permutation class) in terms of what we call generating permutations and we describe some properties of its basis, which allow to compute such a basis for small values of $k$.
Refining the bijections among ascent sequences, (2+2)-free posets, integer matrices and pattern-avoiding permutations

The combined work of Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes, Jelínek, Kitaev, Kubitzke and Parviainen has resulted in non-trivial bijections among ascent sequences, (2+2)-free posets, upper-triangular integer matrices, and pattern-avoiding permutations. To probe the finer behavior of these bijections, we study two types of restrictions on ascent sequences. These restrictions are motivated by our results that their images under the bijections are natural and combinatorially significant. In addition, for one restriction, we are able to determine the effect of poset duality on the corresponding ascent sequences, matrices and permutations, thereby answering a question of the first author and Parviainen in this case. The second restriction should appeal to Catalaniacs.
Local convergence for permutations and local limits for uniform $ρ$-avoiding permutations with $|ρ|=3$

We set up a new notion of local convergence for permutations and we prove a characterization in terms of proportions of \emph{consecutive} pattern occurrences. We also characterize random limiting objects for this new topology introducing a notion of "shift-invariant" property (corresponding to the notion of unimodularity for random graphs). We then study two models in the framework of random pattern-avoiding permutations. We compute the local limits of uniform $ρ$-avoiding permutations, for $|ρ|=3,$ when the size of the permutations tends to infinity. The core part of the argument is the description of the asymptotics of the number of consecutive occurrences of any given pattern. For this result we use bijections between $ρ$-avoiding permutations and rooted ordered trees, local limit results for Galton--Watson trees, the Second moment method and singularity analysis.
$(q,t)$-Catalan numbers: gamma expansions, pattern avoidance and the $(-1)$-phenomenon

The aim of this paper is two-fold. We first prove several new interpretations of a kind of $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers along with their corresponding $γ$-expansions using pattern avoiding permutations. Secondly, we give a complete characterization of certain $(-1)$-phenomenon for each subset of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length three, and discuss their $q$-analogues utilizing the newly obtained $q$-$γ$-expansions, as well as the continued fraction of a quint-variate generating function due to Shin and the fourth author. Moreover, we enumerate the alternating permutations avoiding simultaneously two patterns, namely $(2413,3142)$ and $(1342,2431)$, of length four, and consider such $(-1)$-phenomenon for these two subsets as well.

An ordered set partition of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ is a partition with an ordering on the parts. Let $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ be the set of ordered set partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks. Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell defined $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)$ to be the set of ordered set partitions in $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$ avoiding a permutation pattern $σ$ and obtained the formula for $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)|$ when the pattern $σ$ is of length $2$. Later, Chen, Dai and Zhou found a formula algebraically for $|\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}(σ)|$ when the pattern $σ$ is of length $3$.
In this paper, we define a new pattern avoidance for the set $\mathcal{OP}_{n,k}$, called $\mathcal{WOP}_{n,k}(σ)$, which includes the questions proposed by Godbole, Goyt, Herdan and Pudwell. We obtain formulas for $|\mathcal{WOP}_{n,k}(σ)|$ combinatorially for any $σ$ of length $ 3$. We also define 3 kinds of descent statistics on ordered set partitions and study the distribution of the descent statistics on $\mathcal{WOP}_{n,k}(σ)$ for $σ$ of length $3$.

Borel's triangle is an array of integers closely related to the classical Catalan numbers. In this paper we study combinatorial statistics counted by Borel's triangle. We present various combinatorial interpretations of Borel's triangle in terms of lattice paths, binary trees, and pattern avoiding permutations and matchings, and derive a functional equation that is useful in analyzing the involved structures.

We introduce the poset of mesh patterns, which generalises the permutation pattern poset. We fully classify the mesh patterns for which the interval [1^\emptyset,m] is non-pure, where 1^\emptyset is the unshaded singleton mesh pattern. We present some results on the Möbius function of the poset, and show that μ(1^\emptyset,m) is almost always zero. Finally, we introduce a class of disconnected and non-shellable intervals by generalising the direct product operation from permutations to mesh patterns.
A Note on Flips in Diagonal Rectangulations

Rectangulations are partitions of a square into axis-aligned rectangles. A number of results provide bijections between combinatorial equivalence classes of rectangulations and families of pattern-avoiding permutations. Other results deal with local changes involving a single edge of a rectangulation, referred to as flips, edge rotations, or edge pivoting. Such operations induce a graph on equivalence classes of rectangulations, related to so-called flip graphs on triangulations and other families of geometric partitions. In this note, we consider a family of flip operations on the equivalence classes of diagonal rectangulations, and their interpretation as transpositions in the associated Baxter permutations, avoiding the vincular patterns { 3{14}2, 2{41}3 }. This complements results from Law and Reading (JCTA, 2012) and provides a complete characterization of flip operations on diagonal rectangulations, in both geometric and combinatorial terms.
A counterexample regarding labelled well-quasi-ordering

Korpelainen, Lozin, and Razgon conjectured that a hereditary property of graphs which is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph order and defined by only finitely many minimal forbidden induced subgraphs is labelled well-quasi-ordered, a notion stronger than that of $n$-well-quasi-order introduced by Pouzet in the 1970s. We present a counterexample to this conjecture. In fact, we exhibit a hereditary property of graphs which is well-quasi-ordered by the induced subgraph order and defined by finitely many minimal forbidden induced subgraphs yet is not $2$-well-quasi-ordered. This counterexample is based on the widdershins spiral, which has received some study in the area of permutation patterns.
1324-avoiding permutations revisited

We give an improved algorithm for counting the number of $1324$-avoiding permutations, resulting in $14$ further terms of the generating function, which is now known for all patterns of length $\le 50$. We re-analyse the generating function and find additional evidence for our earlier conclusion that unlike other classical length-$4$ pattern-avoiding permutations, the generating function does not have a simple power-law singularity, but rather, the number of $1324$-avoiding permutations of length $n$ behaves as \[ B\cdot μ^n \cdot μ_1^{\sqrt{n}} \cdot n^g. \] We estimate $μ=11.600 \pm 0.003$, $μ_1 = 0.0400 \pm 0.0005$, $g = -1.1 \pm 0.1$ while the estimate of $B$ depends sensitively on the precise value of $μ$, $μ_1$ and $g$. This reanalysis provides substantially more compelling arguments for the presence of the stretched exponential term $μ_1^{\sqrt{n}}$.
Few Sequence Pairs Suffice: Representing All Rectangle Placements

We consider representations of general non-overlapping placements of rectangles by spatial relations (west, south, east, north) of pairs of rectangles. We call a set of representations complete if it contains a representation of every placement of $n$ rectangles.
We prove a new upper bound of $\mathcal{O}(\frac{n!}{n^6} \cdot (\frac{11+5 \sqrt 5}{2})^n)$ and a new lower bound of $Ω(\frac{n!}{n^4} \cdot (4 + 2 \sqrt2)^n)$ on the minimum cardinality of complete sets of representations. A key concept in the proofs of these results are pattern-avoiding permutations.
The new upper bound directly improves upon the well-known sequence pair representation, which has size $(n!)^2$, by only considering a restricted set of sequence pairs. It implies theoretically faster algorithms for VLSI placement problems.
Mahonian STAT on rearrangement class of words

In 2000, Babson and Steingrímsson generalized the notion of permutation patterns to the so-called vincular patterns, and they showed that many Mahonian statistics can be expressed as sums of vincular pattern occurrence statistics. STAT is one of such Mahonian statistics discoverd by them. In 2016, Kitaev and the third author introduced a words analogue of STAT and proved a joint equidistribution result involving two sextuple statistics on the whole set of words with fixed length and alphabet. Moreover, their computer experiments hinted at a finer involution on $R(w)$, the rearrangement class of a given word $w$. We construct such an involution in this paper, which yields a comparable joint equidistribution between two sextuple statistics over $R(w)$. Our involution builds on Burstein's involution and Foata-Schützenberger's involution that utilizes the celebrated RSK algorithm.
Asymptotics of Pattern Avoidance in the Klazar Set Partition and Permutation-Tuple Settings

We consider asymptotics of set partition pattern avoidance in the sense of Klazar. Our main result derives the asymptotics of the number of set partitions avoiding a given set partition within an exponential factor, which leads to a classification of possible growth rates of set partition pattern classes. We further define a notion of permutation-tuple avoidance, which generalizes notions of Aldred et al. and the usual permutation pattern setting, and similarly determine the number of permutation-tuples avoiding a given tuple to within an exponential factor.
Equidistributions of MAJ and STAT over pattern avoiding permutations
Babson and Steingrímsson introduced generalized permutation patterns and showed that most of the Mahonian statistics in the literature can be expressed by the combination of generalized pattern functions. Particularly, they defined a new Mahonian statistic in terms of generalized pattern functions, which is denoted $stat$. Recently, Amini investigated the equidistributions of these Mahonian statistics over sets of pattern avoiding permutations. Moreover, he posed several conjectures. In this paper, we construct a bijection from $S_n(213)$ to $S_n(231)$, which maps the statistic $(maj, stat)$ to the statistic $(stat, maj)$. This allows us to give solutions to some of Amini's conjectures.
