Combinatorial minors for matrix functions and their applications
As well known, permanent of a square (0,1)-matrix $A$ of order $n$ enumerates the permutations $β$ of $1,2,...,n$ with the incidence matrices $B\leq A.$ To obtain enumerative information on even and odd permutations with condition $B\leq A,$ we should calculate two-fold vector $(a_1,a_2)$ with $a_1+a_2 =per A.$ More general, the introduced $ω$-permanent, where $ω=e^{2πi/m},$ we calculate as $m$-fold vector. For these and other matrix functions we generalize the Laplace theorem of their expansion over elements of the first row, using the defined so-called "combinatorial minors". In particular, in this way, we calculate the cycle index of permutations with condition $B\leq A.$
Characters of symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants and Frobenius coordinates
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science Proc. AK, 2009, 337-348 • Search Publication
Free cumulants are nice and useful functionals of the shape of a Young diagram, in particular they give the asymptotics of normalized characters of symmetric groups S(n) in the limit n\to\infty. We give an explicit combinatorial formula for normalized characters of the symmetric groups in terms of free cumulants. We also express characters in terms of Frobenius coordinates. Our formulas involve counting certain factorizations of a given permutation. The main tool are Stanley polynomials which give values of characters on multirectangular Young diagrams.

The generalized weighted probability measure on the symmetric group and the asymptotic behavior of the cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
The goal of this paper is to analyse the asymptotic behavior of the cycle process and the total number of cycles of weighted and generalized weighted random permutations which are relevant models in physics and which extend the Ewens measure. We combine tools from combinatorics and complex analysis (e.g. singularity analysis of generating functions) to prove that under some analytic conditions (on relevant generating functions) the cycle process converges to a vector of independent Poisson variables and to establish a central limit theorem for the total number of cycles. Our methods allow us to obtain an asymptotic estimate of the characteristic functions of the different random vectors of interest together with an error estimate, thus having a control on the speed of convergence. In fact we are able to prove a finer convergence for the total number of cycles, namely \textit{mod-Poisson convergence}. From there we apply previous results on mod-Poisson convergence to obtain Poisson approximation for the total number of cycles as well as large deviations estimates.
A generalization of the Erdős-Turán law for the order of random permutation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider random permutations derived by sampling from stick-breaking partitions of the unit interval. The cycle structure of such a permutation can be associated with the path of a decreasing Markov chain on $n$ integers. Under certain assumptions on the stick-breaking factor we prove a central limit theorem for the logarithm of the order of the permutation, thus extending the classical Erdős-Turán law for the uniform permutations and its generalization for Ewens' permutations associated with sampling from the PD/GEM$(θ)$ distribution. Our approach is based on using perturbed random walks to obtain the limit laws for the sum of logarithms of the cycle lengths.

Tight bounds on the maximum size of a set of permutations with bounded VC-dimension

The VC-dimension of a family P of n-permutations is the largest integer k such that the set of restrictions of the permutations in P on some k-tuple of positions is the set of all k! permutation patterns. Let r_k(n) be the maximum size of a set of n-permutations with VC-dimension k. Raz showed that r_2(n) grows exponentially in n. We show that r_3(n)=2^Theta(n log(alpha(n))) and for every s >= 4, we have almost tight upper and lower bounds of the form 2^{n poly(alpha(n))}. We also study the maximum number p_k(n) of 1-entries in an n x n (0,1)-matrix with no (k+1)-tuple of columns containing all (k+1)-permutation matrices. We determine that p_3(n) = Theta(n alpha(n)) and that p_s(n) can be bounded by functions of the form n 2^poly(alpha(n)) for every fixed s >= 4. We also show that for every positive s there is a slowly growing function zeta_s(m) (of the form 2^poly(alpha(m)) for every fixed s >= 5) satisfying the following. For all positive integers n and B and every n x n (0,1)-matrix M with zeta_s(n)Bn 1-entries, the rows of M can be partitioned into s intervals so that at least B columns contain at least B 1-entries in each of the intervals.

Convex obstacle numbers of outerplanar graphs and bipartite permutation graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The disjoint convex obstacle number of a graph G is the smallest number h such that there is a set of h pairwise disjoint convex polygons (obstacles) and a set of n points in the plane (corresponding to V(G)) so that a vertex pair uv is an edge if and only if the corresponding segment uv does not meet any obstacle. We show that the disjoint convex obstacle number of an outerplanar graph is always at most 5, and of a bipartite permutation graph at most 4. The former answers a question raised by Alpert, Koch, and Laison. We complement the upper bound for outerplanar graphs with the lower bound of 4.

Lagrange Inversion Counts $3\bar{5}241$-Avoiding Permutations
In a previous paper, we showed that $3\bar{5}241$-avoiding permutations are counted by the unique sequence that starts with a 1 and shifts left under the self-composition transform. The proof uses a complicated bijection. Here we give a much simpler proof based on Lagrange inversion.

Symmetric chain decomposition of necklace posets
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 19 (2012) P26 • View PublicationBIB
A finite ranked poset is called a symmetric chain order if it can be written as a disjoint union of rank-symmetric, saturated chains. If $P$ is any symmetric chain order, we prove that $P^n/\mathbb{Z}_n$ is also a symmetric chain order, where $\mathbb{Z}_n$ acts on $P^n$ by cyclic permutation of the factors.

Some results on triangle partitions
We show that there exist efficient algorithms for the triangle packing problem in colored permutation graphs, complete multipartite graphs, distance-hereditary graphs, k-modular permutation graphs and complements of k-partite graphs (when k is fixed). We show that there is an efficient algorithm for C_4-packing on bipartite permutation graphs and we show that C_4-packing on bipartite graphs is NP-complete. We characterize the cobipartite graphs that have a triangle partition.

Diagonalization of the Matrices of the Multinomial Descent and Multinomial Inversion Statistics on the Symmetric Group
In the work of Varchenko, Zagier, Thibon, and Reiner, Saliola, Welker, linear algebraic properties of the multiplication map on the group algebra of the group algebra element are studied, which is the sum over all permutations weighted by q^{inv}, q^{maj}, inv. Here q is a variable, and inv and maj are the classical statistics inversion and major index. We define a multinomial descent statistic des_X and a multinomial inversion statistic inv_X. These new defined statistics are the multinomial expressions of the classical statistics descent des and inversion. We determine the spectrum and the multiplicity of each element of the spectrum of the analogously defined multiplication map on the group algebra for both des_X and inv_X. As corollaries we deduce the spectrum and the multiplicity of each element of the spectrum of the defined multiplication map on the group algebra for the statistics des, maj and inv.

Some combinatorial models for reduced expressions in Coxeter groups
Stanley's formula for the number of reduced expressions of a permutation regarded as a Coxeter group element raises the question of how to enumerate the reduced expressions of an arbitrary Coxeter group element. We provide a framework for answering this question by constructing combinatorial objects that represent the inversion set and the reduced expressions for an arbitrary Coxeter group element. The framework also provides a formula for the length of an element formed by deleting a generator from a Coxeter group element. Fan and Hagiwara, et al$.$ showed that for certain Coxeter groups, the short-braid avoiding elements characterize those elements that give reduced expressions when any generator is deleted from a reduced expression. We provide a characterization that holds in all Coxeter groups. Lastly, we give applications to the freely braided elements introduced by Green and Losonczy, generalizing some of their results that hold in simply-laced Coxeter groups to the arbitrary Coxeter group setting.

Sequentiality Restrictions in Special Relativity
Observers in different inertial frames can see a set of spacelike separated events as occurring in different orders. Various restrictions are studied on the possible orderings of events that can be observed. In 1+1-dimensional spacetime {(1 2 3), (2 3 1), (3 1 2)} is a disallowed set of permutations. In 3+1-dimensional spacetime, any four different permutations on the ordering of n events can be seen by four different observers, and there is a set of four events such that any of the 4!=24 possible orderings can be observed in some inertial reference frame. A more complicated problem is that of five observers and five events, where of the 7,940,751 choices of five distinct elements from S_5 (containing the identity), all but at most one set of permutations can be realized, and it is shown that this remaining case is impossible. For six events and five observers, it is shown that there are at least 7970 cases that are unrealizable, of which at least 294 do not come from the forbidden configuration of five events.

Third Power of the Reversed Dickson Polynomial over Finite Fields
Let $D_n(1,x)$ be the $n$th reversed Dickson polynomial. The power sums $\sum_{a\in\Bbb F_q}D_n(1,a)^i$, $i=1,2$, have been determined recently. In this paper we give an evaluation of the sum $\sum_{a\in\Bbb F_q}D_n(1,a)^3$. This result implies new necessary conditions for $D_n(1,x)$ to be a permutation polynomial over $\Bbb F_q$.
Limits of permutation sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
A permutation sequence is said to be convergent if the density of occurrences of every fixed permutation in the elements of the sequence converges. We prove that such a convergent sequence has a natural limit object, namely a Lebesgue measurable function $Z:[0,1]^2 \to [0,1]$ with the additional properties that, for every fixed $x \in [0,1]$, the restriction $Z(x,\cdot)$ is a cumulative distribution function and, for every $y \in [0,1]$, the restriction $Z(\cdot,y)$ satisfies a "mass" condition. This limit process is well-behaved: every function in the class of limit objects is a limit of some permutation sequence, and two of these functions are limits of the same sequence if and only if they are equal almost everywhere. An ingredient in the proofs is a new model of random permutations, which generalizes previous models and might be interesting for its own sake.

Finding the Minimal DFA of Very Large Finite State Automata with an Application to Token Passing Networks
Finite state automata (FSA) are ubiquitous in computer science. Two of the most important algorithms for FSA processing are the conversion of a non-deterministic finite automaton (NFA) to a deterministic finite automaton (DFA), and then the production of the unique minimal DFA for the original NFA. We exhibit a parallel disk-based algorithm that uses a cluster of 29 commodity computers to produce an intermediate DFA with almost two billion states and then continues by producing the corresponding unique minimal DFA with less than 800,000 states. The largest previous such computation in the literature was carried out on a 512-processor CM-5 supercomputer in 1996. That computation produced an intermediate DFA with 525,000 states and an unreported number of states for the corresponding minimal DFA. The work is used to provide strong experimental evidence satisfying a conjecture on a series of token passing networks. The conjecture concerns stack sortable permutations for a finite stack and a 3-buffer. The origins of this problem lie in the work on restricted permutations begun by Knuth and Tarjan in the late 1960s. The parallel disk-based computation is also compared with both a single-threaded and multi-threaded RAM-based implementation using a 16-core 128 GB large shared memory computer.

Average mixing of continuous quantum walks
Published • View PublicationBIB
If $X$ is a graph with adjacency matrix $A$, then we define $H(t)$ to be the operator $\exp(itA)$. The Schur (or entrywise) product $H(t)\circ H(-t)$ is a doubly stochastic matrix and, because of work related to quantum computing, we are concerned the \textsl{average mixing matrix}. This can be defined as the limit of $C^{-1} \int_0^C H(t)\circ H(-t)\dt$ as $C\to\infty$. We establish some of the basic properties of this matrix, showing that it is positive semidefinite and that its entries are always rational. We find that for paths and cycles this matrix takes on a surprisingly simple form, thus for the path it is a linear combination of $I$, $J$ (the all-ones matrix), and a permutation matrix.

The Shard Intersection Order on Permutations
The shard intersection order is a new lattice structure on a finite Coxeter group W which encodes the geometry of the reflection arrangement and the lattice theory of the weak order. In the case where W is the symmetric group, we characterize shard intersections as certain pre-orders which we call permutation pre-orders. We use this combinatorial characterization to determine properties of the shard intersection order. In particular, we give an EL-labeling.

The two-sided infinite extension of the Mallows model for random permutations
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 48 (2012), no. 5, 615-639 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a probability distribution Q on the group of permutations of the set Z of integers. Distribution Q is a natural extension of the Mallows distribution on the finite symmetric group. A one-sided infinite counterpart of Q, supported by the group of permutations of the set N of natural numbers, was studied previously in our paper [Gnedin and Olshanski, Ann. Prob. 38 (2010), 2103-2135; arXiv:0907.3275]. We analyze various features of Q such as its symmetries, the support, and the marginal distributions.
