A Markov chain on permutations which projects to the PASEP
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) is an important model from statistical mechanics which describes a system of interacting particles hopping left and right on a one-dimensional lattice of N sites. It is partially asymmetric in the sense that the probability of hopping left is q times the probability of hopping right. Additionally, particles may enter from the left with probability alpha and exit from the right with probability beta. It has been observed that the (unique) stationary distribution of the PASEP has remarkable connections to combinatorics -- see for example the papers of Derrida, Duchi and Schaeffer, and Corteel. Most recently we proved that in fact the (normalized) probability of being in a particular state of the PASEP can be viewed as a certain weight generating function for permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. (This result implies the previous combinatorial results.) However, our proof relied on the matrix ansatz of Derrida et al, and hence did not give an intuitive explanation of why one should expect the steady state distribution of the PASEP to involve such nice combinatorics. In this paper we define a Markov chain -- which we call the PT chain -- on the set of permutation tableaux which projects to the PASEP in a very strong sense. This gives a new proof of our previous result which bypasses the matrix ansatz altogether. Furthermore, via the bijection from permutation tableaux to permutations, the PT chain can also be viewed as a Markov chain on the symmetric group. Another nice feature of the PT chain is that it possesses a certain symmetry which extends the "particle-hole symmetry" of the PASEP. More specifically, this is a graph-automorphism on the state diagram of the PT chain which is an involution; this has a simple description in terms of permutations.

Efficient enumeration of graceful permutations
A graceful n-permutation is a graceful labeling of an n-vertex path P_n. In this paper we improve the asymptotic lower bound on the number of such permutations from (5/3)^n to 2.37^n. This is a computer-assisted proof based on an effective algorithm that enumerates graceful n-permutations. Our algorithm is also presented in detail.
Simple permutations and algebraic generating functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A simple permutation is one that does not map a nontrivial interval onto an interval. It was recently proved by Albert and Atkinson that a permutation class with only finitely simple permutations has an algebraic generating function. We extend this result to enumerate permutations in such a class satisfying additional properties, e.g., the even permutations, the involutions, the permutations avoiding generalised permutations, and so on.

q-Eulerian Polynomials: Excedance Number and Major index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this research announcement we present a new q-analog of a classical formula for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. The Eulerian polynomials enumerate permutations according to their number of descents or their number of excedances. Our q-Eulerian polynomials are the enumerators for the joint distribution of the excedance statistic and the major index. There is a vast literature on q-Eulerian polynomials which involve other combinations of Mahonian and Eulerian permutation statistics, but the combination of major index and excedance number seems to have been completely overlooked until now. We use symmetric function theory to prove our formula. In particular, we prove a symmetric function version of our formula, which involves an intriguing new class of symmetric functions. We also present connections with representations of the symmetric group on the homology of a poset recently introduced by Björner and Welker and on the cohomology of the toric variety associated with the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group, studied by Procesi, Stanley, Stembridge, Dolgachev and Lunts.

Full heaps and representations of affine Weyl groups
We use the author's combinatorial theory of full heaps (defined in math.QA/0605768) to categorify the action of a large class of Weyl groups on their root systems, and thus to give an elementary and uniform construction of a family of faithful permutation representations of Weyl groups. Examples include the standard representations of affine Weyl groups as permutations of ${\Bbb Z}$ and geometrical examples such as the realization of the Weyl group of type $E_6$ as permutations of 27 lines on a cubic surface; in the latter case, we also show how to recover the incidence relations between the lines from the structure of the heap. Another class of examples involves the action of certain Weyl groups on sets of pairs $(t, f)$, where $t \in {\Bbb Z}$ and $f$ is a function from a suitably chosen set to the two-element set $\{+, -\}$. Each of the permutation representations corresponds to a module for a Kac--Moody algebra, and gives an explicit basis for it.

$G$-reconstruction of graphs
Published in Ars Combinatoria 54 (2000) 293-299 • Search Publication
Let $G$ be a group of permutations acting on an $n$-vertex set $V$, and $X$ and $Y$ be two simple graphs on $V$. We say that $X$ and $Y$ are $G$-isomorphic if $Y$ belongs to the orbit of $X$ under the action of $G$. One can naturally generalize the reconstruction problems so that when $G$ is $S_n$, the symmetric group, we have the usual reconstruction problems. In this paper, we study $G$-edge reconstructibility of graphs. We prove some old and new results on edge reconstruction and reconstruction from end vertex deleted subgraphs.

Truncations of random unitary matrices and Young tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $U$ be a matrix chosen randomly, with respect to Haar measure, from the unitary group $U(d).$ We express the moments of the trace of any submatrix of $U$ as a sum over partitions whose terms count certain standard and semistandard Young tableaux. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we obtain a simple closed form for the moments of an individual entry of a random unitary matrix and use this to deduce that the entries converge in moments to standard complex Gaussian random variables. In addition, we recover a well-known theorem of E. Rains which shows that the moments of the trace of a random unitary matrix enumerate permutations with restricted increasing subsequence length.

The Number of Complete Maps on Surfaces
A map is a connected topological graph cellularly embedded in a surface and a complete map is a cellularly embedded complete graph in a surface. In this paper, all automorphisms of complete maps of order n are determined by permutations on its vertices. Applying a scheme for enumerating maps on surfaces with a given underlying graph, the numbers of unrooted complete maps on orientable or non-orientable surfaces are obtained.

On irreducible n-ary quasigroups with reducible retracts
Published in Eur. J. Comb. 29(2) 2008, 507-513 • View PublicationBIB
An n-ary operation q:A^n->A is called an n-ary quasigroup of order |A| if in x_0=q(x_1,...,x_n) knowledge of any n elements of x_0,...,x_n uniquely specifies the remaining one. An n-ary quasigroup q is permutably reducible if q(x_1,...,x_n)=p(r(x_{s(1)},...,x_{s(k)}),x_{s(k+1)},...,x_{s(n)}) where p and r are (n-k+1)-ary and k-ary quasigroups, s is a permutation, and 1<k<n. For even n we construct a permutably irreducible n-ary quasigroup of order 4r such that all its retracts obtained by fixing one variable are permutably reducible. We use a partial Boolean function that satisfies similar properties. For odd n the existence of a permutably irreducible n-ary quasigroup such that all its (n-1)-ary retracts are permutably reducible is an open question; however, there are nonexistence results for 5-ary and 7-ary quasigroups of order 4. On arithmetic and asymptotic properties of up-down numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $σ=(σ_1,..., σ_N)$, where $σ_i =\pm 1$, and let $C(σ)$ denote the number of permutations $π$ of $1,2,..., N+1,$ whose up-down signature $\mathrm{sign}(π(i+1)-π(i))=σ_i$, for $i=1,...,N$. We prove that the set of all up-down numbers $C(σ)$ can be expressed by a single universal polynomial $Φ$, whose coefficients are products of numbers from the Taylor series of the hyperbolic tangent function. We prove that $Φ$ is a modified exponential, and deduce some remarkable congruence properties for the set of all numbers $C(σ)$, for fixed $N$. We prove a concise upper-bound for $C(σ)$, which describes the asymptotic behaviour of the up-down function $C(σ)$ in the limit $C(σ) \ll (N+1)!$.

Collinear Triple Hypergraphs and the Finite Plane Kakeya Problem
We show that the problem of counting collinear points in a permutation (previously considered by the author and J. Solymosi in "Collinear Points in Permutations", 2005) and the well-known finite plane Kakeya problem are intimately connected. Via counting arguments and by studying the hypergraph of collinear triples we show a new lower bound (5q/14 + O(1)) for the number of collinear triples of a permutation of GF(q) and a new lower bound (q(q + 1)/2 + 5q/14 + O(1)) on the size of the smallest Besicovitch set in GF(q)^2. Several interesting questions about the structure of the collinear triple hypergraph are presented.

Representation theories of some towers of algebras related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras
We study the representation theory of three towers of algebras which are related to the symmetric groups and their Hecke algebras. The first one is constructed as the algebras generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. The two others are the monoid algebras of nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions. For these three towers, we describe the structure of simple and indecomposable projective modules, together with the Cartan map. The Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by the induction product and the restriction coproduct are also given explicitly. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.

On reducibility of n-ary quasigroups
Published in Discrete Math. 308(22) 2008, 5289-5297 • View PublicationBIB
An $n$-ary operation $Q:S^n -> S$ is called an $n$-ary quasigroup of order $|S|$ if in the equation $x_{0}=Q(x_1,...,x_n)$ knowledge of any $n$ elements of $x_0$, ..., $x_n$ uniquely specifies the remaining one. $Q$ is permutably reducible if $Q(x_1,...,x_n)=P(R(x_{s(1)},...,x_{s(k)}),x_{s(k+1)},...,x_{s(n)})$ where $P$ and $R$ are $(n-k+1)$-ary and $k$-ary quasigroups, $s$ is a permutation, and $1<k<n$. An $m$-ary quasigroup $S$ is called a retract of $Q$ if it can be obtained from $Q$ or one of its inverses by fixing $n-m>0$ arguments. We prove that if the maximum arity of a permutably irreducible retract of an $n$-ary quasigroup $Q$ belongs to $\{3,...,n-3\}$, then $Q$ is permutably reducible. Signed permutations and the four color theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
To each permutation $σ$ in $S_{n}$ we associate a triangulation of a fixed $(n+2)$-gon. We then determine the fibers of this association and show that they coincide with the sylvester classes depicted By Novelli, Hivert and Thibon. A signed version of this construction allows us to reformulate the four color theorem in terms of the existence of a signable path between any two permutations in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_{n}.

The flag-major index "fmaj" and the classical length function "$\ell$" are used to construct two $q$-analogs of the generating polynomial for the hyperoctahedral group~$B_n$ by number of positive and negative fixed points (resp. pixed points). Specializations of those $q$-analogs are also derived dealing with signed derangements and desarrangements, as well as several classical results that were previously proved for the symmetric group.

Labeled Partitions and the q-Derangement Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
By a re-examination of MacMahon's original proof of his celebrated theorem on the distribution of the major indices over permutations, we give a reformulation of his argument in terms of the structure of labeled partitions. In this framework, we are able to establish a decomposition theorem for labeled partitions that leads to a simple bijective proof of Wachs' formula on the q-derangement numbers.
A Hybrid of Darboux's Method and Singularity Analysis in Combinatorial Asymptotics
Published • View PublicationBIB
A ``hybrid method'', dedicated to asymptotic coefficient extraction in combinatorial generating functions, is presented, which combines Darboux's method and singularity analysis theory. This hybrid method applies to functions that remain of moderate growth near the unit circle and satisfy suitable smoothness assumptions--this, even in the case when the unit circle is a natural boundary. A prime application is to coefficients of several types of infinite product generating functions, for which full asymptotic expansions (involving periodic fluctuations at higher orders) can be derived. Examples relative to permutations, trees, and polynomials over finite fields are treated in this way.
