Combinatorics of the Delta conjecture at q=-1
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics 7(1) (2024), 17--35 • View PublicationBIB
In the context of the shuffle theorem, many classical integer sequences appear with a natural refinement by two statistics $q$ and $t$: for example the Catalan and Schröder numbers. In particular, the bigraded Hilbert series of diagonal harmonics is a $q,t$-analog of $(n+1)^{n-1}$ (and can be written in terms of symmetric functions via the nabla operator). The motivation for this work is the observation that at $q=-1$, this $q,t$-analog becomes a $t$-analog of Euler numbers, a famous integer sequence that counts alternating permutations. We prove this observation via a more general statement, that involves the Delta operator on symmetric functions (on one side), and new combinatorial statistics on permutations involving peaks and valleys (on the other side). An important tool are the schedule numbers of a parking function first introduced by Hicks; and expanded upon by Haglund and Sergel. Other empirical observation suggest that nonnegativity at $q=-1$ holds in far greater generality.

Algorithms for computing the permutation resemblance of functions over finite groups
Permutation resemblance measures the distance of a function from being a permutation. Here we show how to determine the permutation resemblance through linear integer programming techniques. We also present an algorithm for constructing feasible solutions to this integer program, and use it to prove an upper bound for permutation resemblance for some special functions. Additionally, we present a generalization of the linear integer program that takes a function on a finite group and determines a permutation with the lowest differential uniformity among those most resembling it.

The Harer-Zagier and Jackson formulas and new results for one-face bipartite maps
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 152(10) (2024), 4245--4259 • Search Publication
The study of bipartite maps (or Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants) is closely connected with geometry, mathematical physics and free probability. Here we study these objects from their permutation factorization formulation using a novel character theory approach. We first present some general symmetric function expressions for the number of products of two permutations respectively from two arbitrary, but fixed, conjugacy classes indexed by $α$ and $γ$ which produce a permutation with $m$ cycles. Our next objective is to derive explicit formulas for the cases where $α$ corresponds to full cycles, i.e., one-face bipartite maps. We prove a far-reaching explicit formula, and show that the number for any $γ$ can be iteratively reduced to that of products of two full cycles, which implies an efficient dimension-reduction algorithm for building a database of all these numbers. Note that the number for products of two full cycles can be computed by the Zagier-Stanley formula. Also, in a unified way, we easily prove the celebrated Harer-Zagier formula and Jackson's formula, and we obtain explicit formulas for several new families as well.

Top-degree components of Grothendieck and Lascoux polynomials
The Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomial $\widehat{\mathfrak{G}}_w$ with $w \in S_n$ is the highest homogeneous component of the Grothendieck polynomial $\mathfrak{G}_w$. Pechenik, Speyer and Weigandt define a statistic $\mathsf{rajcode}(\cdot)$ on $S_n$ that gives the leading monomial of $\widehat{\mathfrak{G}}_w$. We introduce a statistic $\mathsf{rajcode}(\cdot)$ on any diagram $D$ through a combinatorial construction ``snow diagram'' that augments and decorates $D$. When $D$ is the Rothe diagram of a permutation $w$, $\mathsf{rajcode}(D)$ agrees with the aforementioned $\mathsf{rajcode}(w)$. When $D$ is the key diagram of a weak composition $α$, $\mathsf{rajcode}(D)$ yields the leading monomial of $\widehat{\mathfrak{L}}_α$, the highest homogeneous component of the Lascoux polynomials $\mathfrak{L}_α$. We use $\widehat{\mathfrak{L}}_α$ to construct a basis of $\widehat{V}_n$, the span of $\widehat{\mathfrak{G}}_w$ with $w \in S_n$. Then we show $\widehat{V}_n$ gives a natural algebraic interpretation of a classical $q$-analogue of Bell numbers.

Classification of cyclic groups underlying only smooth skew morphisms
A skew morphism of a finite group $A$ is a permutation $\varphi$ of $A$ fixing the identity element and for which there is an integer-valued function $π$ on $A$ such that $\varphi(ab)=\varphi(a)\varphi^{π(a)}(b)$ for all $a, b \in A$. A skew morphism $\varphi$ of $A$ is smooth if the associated power function $π$ is constant on the orbits of $\varphi$, that is, $π(\varphi(a))\equivπ(a)\pmod{|\varphi|}$ for all $a\in A$. In this paper we show that every skew morphism of a cyclic group of order $n$ is smooth if and only if $n=2^en_1$, where $0 \le e \le 4$ and $n_1$ is an odd square-free number. A partial solution to a similar problem on non-cyclic abelian groups is also given.

Permutation resemblance
Motivated by the problem of constructing bijective maps with low differential uniformity, we introduce the notion of permutation resemblance of a function, which looks to measure the distance a given map is from being a permutation. We prove several results concerning permutation resemblance and show how it can be used to produce low differentially uniform bijections. We also study the permutation resemblance of planar functions, which over fields of odd characteristic are known not to be bijections and to have the optimal differential uniformity.

Unshuffling a deck of cards
Published in Involve 17 (2024) 669-687 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the mathematics behind unshuffles, a type of card shuffle closely related to classical perfect shuffles. To perform an unshuffle, deal all the cards alternately into two piles and then stack the one pile on top of the other. There are two ways this stacking can be done (left stack on top or right stack on top), giving rise to the terms left shuffle ($L$) and right shuffle ($R$), respectively. We give a solution to a generalization of Elmsley's Problem (a classic mathematical card trick) using unshuffles for decks with $2^k$ cards. We also find the structure of the permutation groups $\langle L, R \rangle$ for a deck of $2n$ cards for all values of $n$. We prove that the group coincides with the perfect shuffle group unless $n\equiv 3 \pmod 4$, in which case the group $\langle L, R \rangle$ is equal to $B_n$, the group of centrally symmetric permutations of $2n$ elements, while the perfect shuffle group is an index 2 subgroup of $B_n$.

Symmetry groups for social preference functions
We introduce the anonymity group, the neutrality group and the symmetry group of a social preference function. Inspired by a problem posed by Kelly in 1991 and remained unsolved, we investigate the problem of recognizing which permutation groups may arise as anonymity, neutrality and symmetry group of a social preference function. A complete description is found for the neutrality groups and a sufficient condition, which largely encompasses the problem, is found for the anonymity groups. Using the concept of orbit extension of a group $U$, we formulate manageable necessary conditions for being $U$ an anonymity or a symmetry group. Our research deeply interacts with problems of representability by Boolean functions shedding light on them.

Naturally emerging maps for derangements and nonderangements
A derangement is a permutation with no fixed point, and a nonderangement is a permutation with at least one fixed point. There is a one-term recurrence for the number of derangements of $n$ elements, and we describe a bijective proof of this recurrence which can be found using a recursive map. We then show the combinatorial interpretation of this bijection and how it compares with other known bijections, and show how this gives an involution on $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Nonderangements satisfy a similar recurrence. We convert the bijective proof of the one-term identity for derangements into a bijective proof of the one-term identity for nonderangements.
Bounds for Permutation Arrays under Kendall Tau Metric
Permutation arrays under the Kendall-$τ$ metric have been considered for error-correcting codes. Given $n$ and $d\in [1..\binom{n}{2}]$, the task is to find a large permutation array of permutations on $n$ symbols with pairwise Kendall-$τ$ distance at least $d$. Let $P(n,d)$ denote the maximum size of any permutation array of permutations on $n$ symbols with pairwise Kendall-$τ$ distance $d$. New algorithms and several theorems are presented, giving improved lower bounds for $P(n,d)$. Also, $(n,m,d)$-arrays are defined, which are permutation arrays on n symbols with Kendall-$τ$ distance d, with the restriction that symbols {1...(n-m)} appear in increasing order. Let $P(n,m,d)$ denote the maximum size of any $(n,m,d)$-array. For example, (n,m,d)-arrays are useful for recursively computing lower bounds for $P(n,d)$. Lower and upper bounds are given for $P(n.m,d)$.
Counting Parking Sequences and Parking Assortments Through Permutations
Parking sequences (a generalization of parking functions) are defined by specifying car lengths and requiring that a car attempts to park in the first available spot after its preference. If it does not fit there, then a collision occurs and the car fails to park. In contrast, parking assortments generalize parking sequences (and parking functions) by allowing cars (also of assorted lengths) to seek forward from their preference to identify a set of contiguous unoccupied spots in which they fit. We consider both parking sequences and parking assortments and establish that the number of preferences resulting in a fixed parking order $σ$ is related to the lengths of cars indexed by certain subsequences in $σ$. The sum of these numbers over all parking orders (i.e. permutations of $[n]$) yields new formulas for the total number of parking sequences and of parking assortments.

On the finiteness of certain factorization invariants

Let $H$ be a monoid, $\mathscr F(X)$ be the free monoid on a set $X$, and $π_H$ be the unique extension of the identity map on $H$ to a monoid homomorphism $\mathscr F(H) \to H$. Given $A \subseteq H$, an $A$-word $\mathfrak z$ (i.e., an element of $\mathscr F(A)$) is minimal if $π_H(\mathfrak z) \ne π_H(\mathfrak z')$ for every permutation $\mathfrak z'$ of a proper subword of $\mathfrak z$. The minimal $A$-elasticity of $H$ is then the supremum of all rational numbers $m/n$ with $m, n \in \mathbb N^+$ such that there exist minimal $A$-words $\mathfrak a$ and $\mathfrak b$ of length $m$ and $n$, resp., with $π_H(\mathfrak a) = π_H(\mathfrak b)$. Among other things, we show that if $H$ is commutative and $A$ is finite, then the minimal $A$-elasticity of $H$ is finite. This yields a non-trivial generalization of the finiteness part of a classical theorem of Anderson et al. from the case where $H$ is cancellative, commutative, and finitely generated (f.g.) modulo units and $A$ is the set $\mathscr A(H)$ of its atoms. We also check that commutativity is somewhat essential here, by proving the existence of an atomic, cancellative, f.g. monoid with trivial group of units whose minimal $\mathscr A(H)$-elasticity is infinite.

A bijection between evil-avoiding and rectangular permutations
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 30 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
Evil-avoiding permutations, introduced by Kim and Williams in 2022, arise in the study of the inhomogeneous totally asymmetric simple exclusion process. Rectangular permutations, introduced by Chirivì, Fang, and Fourier in 2021, arise in the study of Schubert varieties and Demazure modules. Taking a suggestion of Kim and Williams, we supply an explicit bijection between evil-avoiding and rectangular permutations in $S_n$ that preserves the number of recoils. We encode these classes of permutations as regular languages and construct a length-preserving bijection between words in these regular languages. We extend the bijection to another Wilf-equivalent class of permutations, namely the $1$-almost-increasing permutations, and exhibit a bijection between rectangular permutations and walks of length $2n-2$ in a path of seven vertices starting and ending at the middle vertex.

Infinite product of power series
We give an exact coefficients formula of any infinite product of power series with constant term equal to $1$, by using structures from partitions of integers and permutation groups. This is an universal theorem for various of Binomial-type theorems in many sense. In particular, we give the new formulas as the double counting of Bell polynomial, Binomial Theorem and Multinomial Theorem.

Locally uniform random permutations with large increasing subsequences
Published in Combinatorial Theory, 3 (3), 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the maximal size of an increasing subset among points randomly sampled from certain probability densities. Kerov and Vershik's celebrated result states that the largest increasing subset among $N$ uniformly random points on $[0,1]^2$ has size asymptotically $2\sqrt{N}$. More generally, the order $Θ(\sqrt{N})$ still holds if the sampling density is continuous. In this paper we exhibit two sufficient conditions on the density to obtain a growth rate equivalent to any given power of $N$ greater than $\sqrt{N}$, up to logarithmic factors. Our proofs use methods of slicing the unit square into appropriate grids, and investigating sampled points appearing in each box.

RSK-Complete Cycle Decompositions
We characterize the class of cycle decompositions that can achieve all Young tableau shapes (except the trivial ones with a single row or a single column) under the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth (RSK) correspondence, a property that we call RSK-completeness. We prove that for even $n$, cyclic permutations comprise the only fixed cycle decomposition that is RSK-complete. For odd $n$, cyclic permutations and almost cyclic permutations which have a cycle of length $n-1$ are the only RSK-complete cycle decompositions.

Combinatorial Hopf species and algebras from preorder cuts
We introduce new concepts and viewpoints on combinatorial Hopf species and algebras. We give a category ${\rm \bf set_{\mathbb{N}}}$ whose objects are sets, and (dualizable) morphisms represented by matrices of non-negative integers. For a bimonoid species $(B,Δ, μ)$ in ${\rm \bf set_{\mathbb{N}}}$ we may then dualize the product $μ$ to get two intertwined coproducts $Δ, Δ^\prime$. We consider restriction species $\mathsf{S}$ over ${\rm \bf set_{\mathbb{N}}}$ accompanied by pairs of natural transformations $π_1, π_2 : \mathsf{S} \rightarrow {\rm Pre}$ to the species of preorders. A simple construction associates two comonoid species $Δ^1$ and $Δ^2$, and we investigate when they are intertwined. We get new Hopf algebras: i. choosing an arbitrary set of permutations without global descents, we get associated a quotient Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations avoiding this chosen set, ii. a Hopf algebra of pairs of parking filtrations, and iii. three Hopf algebras of pairs of preorders.

Coloured and Dependent Planar Matchings of Random Bipartite Graphs
In this paper, we study two problems related to planar matchings in random bipartite graphs. First, we colour each edge of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ uniformly randomly from amongst ${r}$ colours and show that if ${r}$ grows linearly with ${n}$ then the maximum rainbow matching is a non-trivial fraction of ${r}$ with high probability, i.e. with probability converging to one as ${n \rightarrow \infty}$ Next we consider planar matchings in a dependent setting where each vertex is forced to choose exactly one neighbour from amongst all possible choices. We obtain estimates for the largest size of a planar matching and also discuss the implication of our results to longest increasing subsequences in enlarged random permutations.

On abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops
We study abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops. We construct all split $3$-divisible abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops from so-called Moufang permutations on abelian groups $(X,+)$, which are permutations that deviate from an automorphism of $(X,+)$ by an alternating biadditive mapping (satisfying certain properties). More generally, we obtain additional abelian-by-cyclic Moufang loops from so-called construction pairs. As an aside, we show that in the Moufang loops $Q$ obtained from a construction pair on $(X,+)$ the abelian normal subgroup $(X,+)$ induces an abelian congruence of $Q$ if and only if $Q$ is a group.

The Ulam-Hammersley problem for multiset permutations
We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the longest increasing/non-decreasing subsequences in a random uniform multiset permutation in which each element in {1,...,n} occurs k times, where k may depend on n. This generalizes the famous Ulam-Hammersley problem of the case k=1. The proof relies on poissonization and a connection with variants of the Hammersley-Aldous-Diaconis particle system.
