A note on Tamari intervals
To every partial order P, one associates a polynomial $\mathbb{D}_P$ in 4 variables that enumerates the intervals of P according to 4 parameters. Some symmetry properties of this polynomial are obtained for a specific family of posets, the Tamari lattices. A ternary symmetry is proved for the polynomial in 3 variables obtained by setting one variable to 1. Another global symmetry is conjectured. The set of synchronized intervals is described using a facet of the Newton polytope. A relation to the statistics of the canopy of binary planar trees is described.
A bijection between phylogenetic trees and plane oriented recursive trees
Phylogenetic trees are binary nonplanar trees with labelled leaves, and plane oriented recursive trees are planar trees with an increasing labelling. Both families are enumerated by double factorials. A bijection is constructed, using the respective representations a 2-partitions and trapezoidal words.
Polynomial tuning of multiparametric combinatorial samplers

Boltzmann samplers and the recursive method are prominent algorithmic frameworks for the approximate-size and exact-size random generation of large combinatorial structures, such as maps, tilings, RNA sequences or various tree-like structures. In their multiparametric variants, these samplers allow to control the profile of expected values corresponding to multiple combinatorial parameters. One can control, for instance, the number of leaves, profile of node degrees in trees or the number of certain subpatterns in strings. However, such a flexible control requires an additional non-trivial tuning procedure. In this paper, we propose an efficient polynomial-time, with respect to the number of tuned parameters, tuning algorithm based on convex optimisation techniques. Finally, we illustrate the efficiency of our approach using several applications of rational, algebraic and Pólya structures including polyomino tilings with prescribed tile frequencies, planar trees with a given specific node degree distribution, and weighted partitions.
Long paths and toughness of k-trees and chordal planar graphs

We show that every $k$-tree of toughness greater than $\frac{k}{3}$ is Hamilton-connected for $k \geq 3$. (In particular, chordal planar graphs of toughness greater than $1$ are Hamilton-connected.) This improves the result of Broersma et al. (2007) and generalizes the result of Böhme et al. (1999).
On the other hand, we present graphs whose longest paths are short. Namely, we construct $1$-tough chordal planar graphs and $1$-tough planar $3$-trees, and we show that the shortness exponent of the class is $0$, at most $\log_{30}{22}$, respectively. Both improve the bound of Böhme et al. Furthermore, the construction provides $k$-trees (for $k \geq 4$) of toughness greater than $1$.
On Gallai's conjecture for series-parallel graphs and planar 3-trees
A path cover is a decomposition of the edges of a graph into edge-disjoint simple paths. Gallai conjectured that every connected $n$-vertex graph has a path cover with at most $\lceil n/2 \rceil$ paths. We prove Gallai's conjecture for series-parallel graphs. For the class of planar 3-trees we show how to construct a path cover with at most $\lfloor 5n/8 \rfloor$ paths, which is an improvement over the best previously known bound of $\lfloor 2n/3 \rfloor$.
The Combinatorics of Directed Planar Trees

We give a geometric realization of the polyhedra governed by the structure of associative algebras with co-inner products, or more precisely, governed by directed planar trees. Our explicit realization of these polyhedra, which include the associahedra in a special case, shows in particular that these polyhedra are homeomorphic to balls. We also calculate the number of vertices of the lowest generalized associahedra, giving appropriate generalizations of the Catalan numbers.
Enumeration of polyominoes defined in terms of pattern avoidance or convexity constraints
In this thesis, we consider the problem of characterizing and enumerating sets of polyominoes described in terms of some constraints, defined either by convexity or by pattern containment. We are interested in a well known subclass of convex polyominoes, the k-convex polyominoes for which the enumeration according to the semi-perimeter is known only for k=1,2. We obtain, from a recursive decomposition, the generating function of the class of k-convex parallelogram polyominoes, which turns out to be rational. Noting that this generating function can be expressed in terms of the Fibonacci polynomials, we describe a bijection between the class of k-parallelogram polyominoes and the class of planted planar trees having height less than k+3. In the second part of the thesis we examine the notion of pattern avoidance, which has been extensively studied for permutations. We introduce the concept of pattern avoidance in the context of matrices, more precisely permutation matrices and polyomino matrices. We present definitions analogous to those given for permutations and in particular we define polyomino classes, i.e. sets downward closed with respect to the containment relation. So, the study of the old and new properties of the redefined sets of objects has not only become interesting, but it has also suggested the study of the associated poset. In both approaches our results can be used to treat open problems related to polyominoes as well as other combinatorial objects.
Intersection Graphs of L-Shapes and Segments in the Plane

An L-shape is the union of a horizontal and a vertical segment with a common endpoint. These come in four rotations: L, Γ, LE{} and \eeG. A $k$-bend path is a simple path in the plane, whose direction changes $k$ times from horizontal to vertical. If a graph admits an intersection representation in which every vertex is represented by an L, an L{} or Γ, a $k$-bend path, or a segment, then this graph is called an $\{L\}$-graph, $\{L,Γ\}$-graph, $B_k$-VPG-graph or SEG-graph, respectively. Motivated by a theorem of Middendorf and Pfeiffer [Discrete Mathematics, 108(1):365--372, 1992], stating that every $\{L,Γ\}$-graph is a SEG-graph, we investigate several known subclasses of SEG-graphs and show that they are $\{L\}$-graphs, or $B_k$-VPG-graphs for some small constant $k$. We show that all planar $3$-trees, all line graphs of planar graphs, and all full subdivisions of planar graphs are $\{L\}$-graphs. Furthermore we show that all complements of planar graphs are $B_{17}$-VPG-graphs and all complements of full subdivisions are $B_2$-VPG-graphs. Here a full subdivision is a graph in which each edge is subdivided at least once.
Random-bit optimal uniform sampling for rooted planar trees with given sequence of degrees and Applications

In this paper, we redesign and simplify an algorithm due to Remy et al. for the generation of rooted planar trees that satisfies a given partition of degrees. This new version is now optimal in terms of random bit complexity, up to a multiplicative constant. We then apply a natural process "simulate-guess-and-proof" to analyze the height of a random Motzkin in function of its frequency of unary nodes. When the number of unary nodes dominates, we prove some unconventional height phenomenon (i.e. outside the universal square root behaviour.)
Universal point sets for planar three-tree

For every $n\in \mathbb{N}$, we present a set $S_n$ of $O(n^{3/2}\log n)$ points in the plane such that every planar 3-tree with $n$ vertices has a straight-line embedding in the plane in which the vertices are mapped to a subset of $S_n$. This is the first subquadratic upper bound on the size of universal point sets for planar 3-trees, as well as for the class of 2-trees and serial parallel graphs.
A note on planar partial 3-trees
It implicitly follows from the work of [Colbourn, El-Mallah: On two dual classes of planar graphs. Discrete Mathematics 80(1): 21-40 (1990)] that every planar partial 3-tree is a subgraph of a planar 3-tree. This fact has already enabled to prove a couple of results for planar partial 3-trees by induction on the structure of the underlying planar 3-tree completion. We provide an explicit proof of this observation and strengthen it by showing that one can keep the plane drawing of the input graph unchanged.

We present a bijection from planar reduced trees to planar rooted hypertrees, which extends Knuth's rotation correspondence between planar binary trees and planar rooted trees. The operadic counterpart of the new bijection is explained. Related to this, the space of planar reduced forests is endowed with a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure. The corresponding structure on the space of planar rooted hyperforests is also described.
Non-crossing linked partitions and multiplication of free random variables
The material gives a new combinatorial proof of the multiplicative property of the S-transform. In particular, several properties of the coefficients of its inverse are connected to non-crossing linked partitions and planar trees.
Infinitesimal or cocommutative dipterous bialgebras and good triples of operads
The works of Poincare, Birkhoff, Witt and Cartier, Milnor, Moore on the connected cocommutative Hopf algebras translated in the language of operads means that the triple of operads (Com, As, Lie) endowed with the Hopf compatiblity relation is good. In this paper, we focus on left dipterous (resp. right dipterous) algebras which are associative algebras with an extra left (resp. right) module on themselves and look for good triples were $As$ is replaced by the dipterous operad Dipt. Since the work of Loday and Ronco, the triple of operads (As, Dipt, B_\infty) endowed with the semi-Hopf compatibility relations is known to be good. In this paper, we prove that the triple of operads (As, Dipt, Grove) endowed with the so-called (nonunital) semi-infinitesimal compatibility relations is good. For that, explicit constructions of the free dipterous algebra and the free grove-algebra over a K-vector space V are given. These constructions turn out to be related to rooted planar trees and the little an large Schroeder numbers. Many examples of dipterous algebras are given, notably the free L-dipterous algebras. As a corollary of our results, we also recover that the triple of operads (2As, Dipt, Vect) endowed both with the unital semi-Hopf and with the unital semi-infinitesimal compatibility relations is good, where 2As denotes the operad of 2-associative algebras. We also open this paper on a good triple, related to the Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra in quantum field theory, (Com, Dipt, Prim_{Com} Dipt) endowed with the Hopf compatibility relations and also present a general theorem giving good triples from entangled dipterous like operads named associative molecules.
Planar trees, free nonassociative algebras, invariants, and elliptic integrals

We consider absolutely free nonassociative algebras and, more generally, absolutely free algebras with (maybe infinitely) many multilinear operations. Such algebras are described in terms of labeled reduced planar rooted trees. This allows to apply combinatorial techniques to study their Hilbert series and the asymptotics of their coefficients. These algebras satisfy the Nielsen-Schreier property and their subalgebras are also free. Then, over a field of characteristic 0, we investigate the subalgebras of invariants under the action of a linear group, their sets of free generators and their Hilbert series. It has turned out that, except in the trivial cases, the algebra of invariants is never finitely generated. In important partial cases the Hilbert series of the algebras of invariants and the generating functions of their sets of free generators are expressed in terms of elliptic integrals.

We study straight-line drawings of planar graphs with few segments and few slopes. Optimal results are obtained for all trees. Tight bounds are obtained for outerplanar graphs, 2-trees, and planar 3-trees. We prove that every 3-connected plane graph on $n$ vertices has a plane drawing with at most ${5/2}n$ segments and at most $2n$ slopes. We prove that every cubic 3-connected plane graph has a plane drawing with three slopes (and three bends on the outerface). In a companion paper, drawings of non-planar graphs with few slopes are also considered.
Edit Distance between Unlabeled Ordered Trees

There exists a bijection between one stack sortable permutations --permutations which avoid the pattern 231-- and planar trees. We define an edit distance between permutations which is coherent with the standard edit distance between trees. This one-to-one correspondence yields a polynomial algorithm for the subpermutation problem for $(231)$ avoiding permutations. Moreover, we obtain the generating function of the edit distance between ordered trees and some special ones. For the general case we show that the mean edit distance between a planar tree and all other planar trees is at least $n/ln(n)$. Some results can be extended to labeled trees considering colored Dyck paths or equivalently colored one stack sortable permutations.
Zimmermann Type Cancellation in the Free Faa di Bruno Algebra

The N-variable Hopf algebra introduced by Brouder, Fabretti, and Krattenaler (BFK) in the context of non-commutative Lagrange inversion can be identified with the inverse of the incidence algebra of N-colored interval partitions. The (BFK) antipode and its reflection determine the (generally distinct) left and right inverses of power series with non-commuting coefficients and N non-commuting variables. As in the case of the Faa di Bruno Hopf algebra, there is an analogue of the Zimmermann cancellation formula. The summands of the (BFK) antipode can indexed by the depth first ordering of vertices on contracted planar trees, and the same applies to the interval partition antipode. Both can also be indexed by the breadth first ordering of vertices in the non-order contractible planar trees in which precisely one non-degenerate vertex occurs on each level.

In this paper we study the adjoint functors between the category of Rota-Baxter algebras and the categories of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. In analogy to the well-known theory of the adjoint functor between the category of associative algebras and Lie algebras, we first give an explicit construction of free Rota-Baxter algebras and then apply it to obtain universal enveloping Rota-Baxter algebras of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. We further show that free dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras, as represented by binary planar trees and planar trees, are canonical subalgebras of free Rota-Baxter algebras.
