Bijective counting of tree-rooted maps and shuffles of parenthesis systems
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 14 (2007) R9 • View PublicationBIB
The number of tree-rooted maps, that is, rooted planar maps with a distinguished spanning tree, of size $n$ is C(n)C(n+1) where C(n)=binomial(2n,n)/(n+1) is the nth Catalan number. We present a (long awaited) simple bijection which explains this result. We prove that our bijection is isomorphic to a former recursive construction on shuffles of parenthesis systems due to Cori, Dulucq and Viennot.

Edge-choosability and total-choosability of planar graphs with no adjacent 3-cycles
Published in Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory. Vol. 29 (1), 2009, pp. 163-178 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a planar graph with no two 3-cycles sharing an edge. We show that if $Δ(G)\geq 9$, then $χ'_l(G) = Δ(G)$ and $χ''_l(G)=Δ(G)+1.$ We also show that if $Δ(G)\geq 6$, then $χ'_l(G)\leqΔ(G)+1$ and if $Δ(G)\geq 7$, then $χ''_l(G)\leqΔ(G)+2$. All of these results extend to graphs in the projective plane and when $Δ(G)\geq 7$ the results also extend to graphs in the torus and Klein bottle. This second edge-choosability result improves on work of Wang and Lih and of Zhang and Wu. All of our results use the discharging method to prove structural lemmas about the existence of subgraphs with small degree-sum. For example, we prove that if $G$ is a planar graph with no two 3-cycles sharing an edge and with $Δ(G)\geq 7$, then $G$ has an edge $uv$ with $d(u)\leq 4$ and $d(u)+d(v)\leq Δ(G)+2$. All of our proofs yield linear-time algorithms that produce the desired colorings.

A simple symmetry generating operads related to rooted planar $m$-ary trees and polygonal numbers
The aim of this paper is to further explore an idea from J.-L. Loday briefly exposed in [5]. We impose a natural and simple symmetry on a unit action over the most general quadratic relation which can be written. This leads us to two families of binary, quadratic and regular operads whose free objects, as well as their duals in the sense of Ginzburg and Kapranov are computed. Roughly speaking, free objects found here are in relation to $m$-ary trees, triangular numbers and more generally $m$-tetrahedral numbers, homogeneous polynomials on $m$ commutative indeterminates over a field $K$ and polygonal numbers. Involutive connected P-Hopf algebras are constructed and a link to genomics is discussed. We also propose in conclusion some open questions.

A linear upper bound on the rectilinear crossing number
It is proved that the rectilinear crossing number of every graph with bounded tree-width and bounded degree is linear in the number of vertices. **** This paper has been withdrawn by the author. **** The results have been superseeded by the author's paper with Jan Arne Telle: "Planar decompositions and the crossing number of graphs with an excluded minor", http://arxiv.org/math/0604467.

The associative operad and the weak order on the symmetric groups
The associative operad is a certain algebraic structure on the sequence of group algebras of the symmetric groups. The weak order is a partial order on the symmetric group. There is a natural linear basis of each symmetric group algebra, related to the group basis by Mobius inversion for the weak order. We describe the operad structure on this second basis: the surprising result is that each operadic composition is a sum over an interval of the weak order. We deduce that the coradical filtration is an operad filtration. The Lie operad, a suboperad of the associative operad, sits in the first component of the filtration. As a corollary to our results, we derive a simple explicit expression for Dynkin's idempotent in terms of the second basis. There are combinatorial procedures for constructing a planar binary tree from a permutation, and a composition from a planar binary tree. These define set-theoretic quotients of each symmetric group algebra. We show that they are operad quotients of the associative operad. Moreover, the Hopf kernels of these quotient maps are suboperads of the associative operad.

A note on Erdős-Diophantine graphs and Diophantine carpets
A Diophantine figure is a set of points on the integer grid $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$ where all mutual Euclidean distances are integers. We also speak of Diophantine graphs. In this language a Diophantine figure is a complete Diophantine graph. Due to a famous theorem of Erdős and Anning there are complete Diophantine graphs which are not contained in larger ones. We call them Erdős-Diophantine graphs. A special class of Diophantine graphs are Diophantine carpets. These are planar triangulations of a subset of the integer grid. We give an effective construction for Erdős-Diophantine graphs and characterize the chromatic number of Diophantine carpets.

The chromatic polynomial of fatgraphs and its categorification
Published in Adv. Math., 217 (2008) 1558-1587 • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by Khovanov homology and relations between the Jones polynomial and graph polynomials, we construct a homology theory for embedded graphs from which the chromatic polynomial can be recovered as the Euler characteristic. For plane graphs, we show that our chromatic homology can be recovered from the Khovanov homology of an associated link. We apply this connection with Khovanov homology to show that the torsion-free part of our chromatic homology is independent of the choice of planar embedding of a graph. We extend our construction and categorify the Bollobas-Riordan polynomial (a generalisation of the Tutte polynomial to embedded graphs). We prove that both our chromatic homology and the Khovanov homology of an associated link can be recovered from this categorification.

The absence of efficient dual pairs of spanning trees in planar graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Computation, 13, N13, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
A spanning tree T in a finite planar connected graph G determines a dual spanning tree T* in the dual graph G such that T and T* do not intersect. We show that it is not always possible to find T in G, such that the diameters of T and T* are both within a uniform multiplicative constant (independent of G) of the diameters of their ambient graphs.

Multiple planar coincidences with N-fold symmetry
Published in Zeitschrift fuer Kristallographie 221 (2006) 571-581 • View PublicationBIB
Planar coincidence site lattices and modules with N-fold symmetry are well understood in a formulation based on cyclotomic fields, in particular for the class number one case, where they appear as certain principal ideals in the corresponding ring of integers. We extend this approach to multiple coincidences, which apply to triple or multiple junctions. In particular, we give explicit results for spectral, combinatorial and asymptotic properties in terms of Dirichlet series generating functions.
Planar coincidences for N-fold symmetry
Published in J. Math. Phys. 37 (1996) 1029-1058 • View PublicationBIB
The coincidence problem for planar patterns with $N$-fold symmetry is considered. For the N-fold symmetric module with $N<46$, all isometries of the plane are classified that result in coincidences of finite index. This is done by reformulating the problem in terms of algebraic number fields and using prime factorization. The more complicated case $N \ge 46$ is briefly discussed and N=46 is described explicitly. The results of the coincidence problem also solve the problem of colour lattices in two dimensions and its natural generalization to colour modules.

Upward Three-Dimensional Grid Drawings of Graphs
Published in Order 23:1-20, 2006 • View PublicationBIB
A \emph{three-dimensional grid drawing} of a graph is a placement of the vertices at distinct points with integer coordinates, such that the straight line segments representing the edges do not cross. Our aim is to produce three-dimensional grid drawings with small bounding box volume. We prove that every $n$-vertex graph with bounded degeneracy has a three-dimensional grid drawing with $O(n^{3/2})$ volume. This is the broadest class of graphs admiting such drawings. A three-dimensional grid drawing of a directed graph is \emph{upward} if every arc points up in the z-direction. We prove that every directed acyclic graph has an upward three-dimensional grid drawing with $(n^3)$ volume, which is tight for the complete dag. The previous best upper bound was $O(n^4)$. Our main result is that every $c$-colourable directed acyclic graph ($c$ constant) has an upward three-dimensional grid drawing with $O(n^2)$ volume. This result matches the bound in the undirected case, and improves the best known bound from $O(n^3)$ for many classes of directed acyclic graphs, including planar, series parallel, and outerplanar.
Boxicity of Series Parallel Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The three well-known graph classes, planar graphs (P), series-parallel graphs(SP) and outer planar graphs(OP) satisfy the following proper inclusion relation: OP C SP C P. It is known that box(G) <= 3 if G belongs to P and box(G) <= 2 if G belongs to OP. Thus it is interesting to decide whether the maximum possible value of the boxicity of series-parallel graphs is 2 or 3. In this paper we construct a series-parallel graph with boxicity 3, thus resolving this question. Recently Chandran and Sivadasan showed that for any G, box(G) <= treewidth(G)+2. They conjecture that for any k, there exists a k-tree with boxicity k+1. (This would show that their upper bound is tight but for an additive factor of 1, since the treewidth of any k-tree equals k.) The series-parallel graph we construct in this paper is a 2-tree with boxicity 3 and is thus a first step towards proving their conjecture.

Chord Diagrams and Gauss Codes for Graphs
Chord diagrams on circles and their intersection graphs (also known as circle graphs) have been intensively studied, and have many applications to the study of knots and knot invariants, among others. However, chord diagrams on more general graphs have not been studied, and are potentially equally valuable in the study of spatial graphs. We will define chord diagrams for planar embeddings of planar graphs and their intersection graphs, and prove some basic results. Then, as an application, we will introduce Gauss codes for immersions of graphs in the plane and give algorithms to determine whether a particular crossing sequence is realizable as the Gauss code of an immersed graph.

Ehrhart polynomial and Successive Minima
Published in Mathematika 52 (2005), 1-16 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the Ehrhart polynomial for the class of 0-symmetric convex lattice polytopes in Euclidean $n$-space $\mathbb{R}^n$. It turns out that the roots of the Ehrhart polynomial and Minkowski's successive minima are closely related by their geometric and arithmetic mean. We also show that the roots of lattice $n$-polytopes with or without interior lattice points differ essentially. Furthermore, we study the structure of the roots in the planar case. Here it turns out that their distribution reflects basic properties of lattice polygons.

Enumeration of non-positive planar trivalent graphs
Published in J Algebr Comb (2007) 25:357-373 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct inverse bijections between two sequences of finite sets. One sequence is defined by planar diagrams and the other by lattice walks. G. Kuperberg has shown that the number of elements in these two sets are equal. This problem and the methods we use are motivated by the representation theory of the exceptional simple Lie algebra $G_2$. However in this account we have emphasised the combinatorics.

Spiral Chains: The Proofs of Tait's and Tutte's Three-Edge-Coloring Conjectures
In this paper we have shown without assuming the four color theorem of planar graphs that every (bridgeless) cubic planar graph has a three-edge-coloring. This is an old-conjecture due to Tait in the squeal of efforts in settling the four-color conjecture at the end of the 19th century. We have also shown the applicability of our method to another well-known three edge-coloring conjecture on cubic graphs. Namely Tutte's conjecture that "every 2-connected cubic graph with no Petersen minor is 3-edge colorable". Hence the conclusion of this paper implies another non-computer proof of the four color theorem by using spiral-chains in different context.

RSK Insertion for Set Partitions and Diagram Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give combinatorial proofs of two identities from the representation theory of the partition algebra $C A_k(n), n \ge 2k$. The first is $n^k = \sum_λf^λm_k^λ$, where the sum is over partitions $λ$ of $n$, $f^λ$ is the number of standard tableaux of shape $λ$, and $m_k^λ$ is the number of "vacillating tableaux" of shape $λ$ and length $2k$. Our proof uses a combination of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth insertion and jeu de taquin. The second identity is $B(2k) = \sum_λ(m_k^λ)^2$, where $B(2k)$ is the number of set partitions of $\{1, >..., 2k\}$. We show that this insertion restricts to work for the diagram algebras which appear as subalgebras of the partition algebra: the Brauer, Temperley-Lieb, planar partition, rook monoid, planar rook monoid, and symmetric group algebras.
