On the connected (sub)partition polytope
Let $k$ be a positive integer and let $G$ be a graph with $n$ vertices. A connected $k$-subpartition of $G$ is a collection of $k$ pairwise disjoint sets (a.k.a. classes) of vertices in $G$ such that each set induces a connected subgraph. The connected $k$-subpartition polytope of $G$, denoted by $\poly(G,k)$, is defined as the convex hull of the incidence vectors of all connected $k$-subpartitions of $G$. Many applications arising in off-shore oil-drilling, forest planning, image processing, cluster analysis, political districting, police patrolling, and biology are modeled in terms of finding connected (sub)partitions of a graph. This study focuses on the facial structure of~$\poly(G,k)$ and the computational complexity of the corresponding separation problems. We first propose a set of valid inequalities having non-zero coefficients associated with a single class that extends and generalizes the ones in the literature of related problems, show sufficient conditions for these inequalities to be facet-defining, and design a polynomial-time separation algorithm for them. We also devise two sets of inequalities that consider multiple classes, prove when they define facets, and study the computational complexity of associated separation problems. Finally, we report on computational experiments showing the usefulness of the proposed inequalities.

Polytope realization of cluster structures
Based on the construction of polytope functions and several results about them in [LP], we take a deep look on their mutation behaviors to find a link between a face of a polytope and a sub-cluster algebra of the corresponding cluster algebra. This find provides a way to induce a mutation sequence in a sub-cluster algebra from that in the cluster algebra in totally sign-skew-symmetric case analogous to that achieved via cluster scattering diagram in skew-symmetrizable case by [GHKK] and [M]. With this, we are able to generalize compatibility degree in [CL] and then obtain an equivalent condition of compatibility which does not rely on clusters and thus can be generalized for all polytope functions. Therefore, we could regard compatibility as an intrinsic property of variables, which explains the unistructurality of cluster algebras. According to such cluster structure of polytope functions, we construct a fan $\mathcal{C}$ containing all cones in the $g$-fan. On the other hand, we also find a realization of $G$-matrices and $C$-matrices in polytopes by the mutation behaviors of polytopes, which helps to generalize the dualities between $G$-matrices and $C$-matrices introduced in [NZ] and leads to another polytope explanation of cluster structures. This allows us to construct another fan $\mathcal{N}$ which also contains all cones in the $g$-fan.
Theoretical Studies of the k-Strong Roman Domination Problem
The concept of Roman domination has been a subject of intrigue for more than two decades with the fundamental Roman domination problem standing out as one of the most significant challenges in this field. This article studies a practically motivated generalization of this problem, known as the k-strong Roman domination. In this variation, defenders within a network are tasked with safeguarding any k vertices simultaneously, under multiple attacks. The objective is to find a feasible mapping that assigns an (integer) weight to each vertex of the input graph with a minimum sum of weights across all vertices. A function is considered feasible if any non-defended vertex, i.e. one labeled by zero, is protected by at least one of its neighboring vertices labeled by at least two. Furthermore, each defender ensures the safety of a non-defended vertex by imparting a value of one to it while always retaining a one for themselves. To the best of our knowledge, this paper represents the first theoretical study on this problem. The study presents results for general graphs, establishes connections between the problem at hand and other domination problems, and provides exact values and bounds for specific graph classes, including complete graphs, paths, cycles, complete bipartite graphs, grids, and a few selected classes of convex polytopes. Additionally, an attainable lower bound for general cubic graphs is provided.

$f$-vector inequalities for order and chain polytopes
Published in Mathematica Scandinavica, Volume 130, 2024, pages 467-486 • View PublicationBIB
The order and chain polytopes are two 0/1-polytopes constructed from a finite poset. In this paper, we study the $f$-vectors of these polytopes. We investigate how the order and chain polytopes behave under disjoint unions and ordinal sums of posets, and how the $f$-vectors of these polytopes are expressed in terms of $f$-vectors of smaller polytopes. Our focus is on comparing the $f$-vectors of the order and chain polytope built from the same poset. In our main theorem we prove that for a family of posets built inductively by taking disjoint unions and ordinal sums of posets, for any poset $\mathcal{P}$ in this family the $f$-vector of the order polytope of $\mathcal{P}$ is component-wise at most the $f$-vector of the chain polytope of $\mathcal{P}$.

Equivariant Hilbert and Ehrhart series under translative group actions
We study representations of finite groups on Stanley--Reisner rings of simplicial complexes and on lattice points in lattice polytopes. The framework of translative group actions allows us to use the theory of proper colorings of simplicial complexes without requiring an explicit coloring to be given. We prove that the equivariant Hilbert series of a Cohen--Macaulay simplicial complex under a translative group action admits a rational expression whose numerator is a positive integer combination of irreducible characters. This implies an analogous rational expression for the equivariant Ehrhart series of a lattice polytope with a unimodular triangulation that is invariant under a translative group action. As an application, we study the equivariant Ehrhart series of alcoved polytopes in the sense of Lam and Postnikov and derive explicit results in the case of order polytopes and of Lipschitz poset polytopes.

Symmetries of voltage operations on polytopes, maps and maniplexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Voltage operations extend traditional geometric and combinatorial operations (such as medial, truncation, prism, and pyramid over a polytope) to operations on maniplexes, maps, polytopes, and hypertopes. In classical operations, the symmetries of the original object remain in the operated one, but sometimes additional symmetries are created; the same situation arises with voltage operations. We characterise the automorphisms of the operated object that are derived from the original one and use this to bound the number of flag orbits (under the action of the automorphism group) of the operated object in terms of the original one. The conditions under which the automorphism group of the original object is the same as the automorphism group of the operated object are given. We also look at the cases where there is additional symmetry, which can be accurately described due to the symmetries of the operation itself.

Number of facets of symmetric edge polytopes arising from join graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric edge polytopes of graphs are important object in Ehrhart theory, and have an application to Kuramoto models. In the present paper, we study the upper and lower bounds for the number of facets of symmetric edge polytopes of connected graphs conjectured by Braun and Bruegge. In particular, we show that their conjecture is true for any graph that is the join of two graphs (equivalently, for any connected graph whose complement graph is not connected). It is known that any symmetric edge polytope is a centrally symmetric reflexive polytope. Hence our results give a partial answer to Nill's conjecture: the number of facets of a $d$-dimensional reflexive polytope is at most $6^{d/2}$.

The degenerate vertices of the $2$-qubit $Λ$-polytope and their update rules
Recently, a class of objects, known as $Λ$-polytopes, were introduced for classically simulating universal quantum computation with magic states. In $Λ$-simulation, the probabilistic update of $Λ$ vertices under Pauli measurement yields dynamics consistent with quantum mechanics. Thus, an important open problem in the study of $Λ$-polytopes is characterizing its vertices and determining their update rules. In this paper, we obtain and describe the update of all degenerate vertices of $Λ_{2}$, the $2$-qubit $Λ$ polytope. Our approach exploits the fact that $Λ_{2}$ projects to a well-understood polytope $\text{MP}$ consisting of distributions on the Mermin square scenario. More precisely, we study the ``classical" polytope $\overline{\text{MP}}$, which is $\text{MP}$ intersected by the polytope defined by a set of Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequalities. Owing to a duality between CHSH inequalities and vertices of $\text{MP}$ we utilize a streamlined version of the double-description method for vertex enumeration to obtain certain vertices of $\overline{\text{MP}}$.

Realizing abstract simplicial complexes with specified edge lengths
For finite abstract simplicial complex $Σ$, initial realization $α$ in $\mathbb{E}^d$, and desired edge lengths $L$, we give practical sufficient conditions for the existence of a non-self-intersecting perturbation of $α$ realizing the lengths $L$. We provide software to verify these conditions by computer and optionally assist in the creation of an initial realization from abstract simplicial data. Applications include proving the existence of a planar embedding of a graph with specified edge lengths or proving the existence of polyhedra (or higher-dimensional polytopes) with specified edge lengths.

Totally symmetric self-complementary plane partition matrices and related polytopes
Plane partitions in the totally symmetric self-complementary symmetry class (TSSCPP) are known to be equinumerous with n x n alternating sign matrices, but no explicit bijection is known. In this paper, we give a bijection from these plane partitions to {0,1,-1}-matrices we call magog matrices, some of which are alternating sign matrices. We explore enumerative properties of these matrices related to natural statistics such as inversion number and number of negative ones. We then investigate the polytope defined as their convex hull. We show that all the magog matrices are extreme and give a partial inequality description. Finally, we define another TSSCPP polytope as the convex hull of TSSCPP boolean triangles and determine its dimension, inequalities, vertices, and facets.

Computing the Volume of a Restricted Independent Set Polytope Deterministically
We construct a quasi-polynomial time deterministic approximation algorithm for computing the volume of an independent set polytope with restrictions. Randomized polynomial time approximation algorithms for computing the volume of a convex body have been known now for several decades, but the corresponding deterministic counterparts are not available, and our algorithm is the first of this kind. The class of polytopes for which our algorithm applies arises as linear programming relaxation of the independent set problem with the additional restriction that each variable takes value in the interval $[0,1-α]$ for some $α<1/2$. (We note that the $α\ge 1/2$ case is trivial). We use the correlation decay method for this problem applied to its appropriate and natural discretization. The method works provided $α> 1/2-O(1/Δ^2)$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph. When $Δ=3$ (the sparsest non-trivial case), our method works provided $0.488<α<0.5$. Interestingly, the interpolation method, which is based on analyzing complex roots of the associated partition functions, fails even in the trivial case when the underlying graph is a singleton.
ST-Distributive and ST-Modular Lattices
For two subsets S and T of a given lattice L, we define a relative distributive (modular) property over L, that underlies a large family including the usual class of distributive (modular) lattices. Our proposed class will be called ST-distributive (ST-modular) lattices. In this paper, we explore elemental properties of ST-distributivity (ST-modularity) and find examples of maximal S and T to form ST-distributive lattices for some non-distributive finite lattices of small order. We also characterize the maximal pairs of subsets (S,T), subject to certain constraints, that induce ST-distributivity in the lattice family M_n,n for all natural numbers n greater than or equal to 3. Afterwards, we present an application of ST-modular to convex sets and polytopes. This application has been the first example found and the main guiding light for our new definitions. The aforementioned definitions are closely related to distributive elements of Birkhoff-Gratzer and Stanley's SS-lattices.

Unbounded matroids
A matroid base polytope is a polytope in which each vertex has 0,1 coordinates and each edge is parallel to a difference of two coordinate vectors. Matroid base polytopes are described combinatorially by integral submodular functions on a boolean lattice, satisfying the unit increase property. We define a more general class of unbounded matroids, or U-matroids, by replacing the boolean lattice with an arbitrary distributive lattice. U-matroids thus serve as a combinatorial model for polyhedra that satisfy the vertex and edge conditions of matroid base polytopes, but may be unbounded. Like polymatroids, U-matroids generalize matroids and arise as a special case of submodular systems. We prove that every U-matroid admits a canonical largest extension to a matroid, which we call the generous extension; the analogous geometric statement is that every U-matroid base polyhedron contains a unique largest matroid base polytope. We show that the supports of vertices of a U-matroid base polyhedron span a shellable simplicial complex, and we characterize U-matroid basis systems in terms of shelling orders, generalizing Björner's and Gale's criteria for a simplicial complex to be a matroid independence complex. Finally, we present an application of our theory to subspace arrangements and show that the generous extension has a natural geometric interpretation in this setting.

We give a new combinatorial description for stable Grothendieck polynomials in terms of subdivisions of Gelfand-Zetlin polytopes. Moreover, these subdivisions also provide a description of Lascoux polynomials. This generalizes a similar result on key polynomials by Kiritchenko, Smirnov, and Timorin.

Combinatorics of $(m,n)$-Word Lattices
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 31, 4 (2024). P4.1 • View PublicationBIB
We study the $(m,n)$-word lattices recently introduced by V. Pilaud and D. Poliakova in their study of generalized Hochschild polytopes. We prove that these lattices are extremal and constructable by interval doublings. Moreover, we describe further combinatorial properties of these lattices, such as their cardinality, their canonical join representations and their Galois graphs.
From affine to barycentric coordinates in polytopes
Published in Banach Center Publications 129 (2025), 185-200 • View PublicationBIB
Each point of a simplex is expressed as a unique convex combination of the vertices. The coefficients in the combination are the barycentric coordinates of the point. For each point in a general convex polytope, there may be multiple representations, so its barycentric coordinates are not necessarily unique. There are various schemes to fix particular barycentric coordinates: Gibbs, Wachspress, cartographic, etc. In this paper, a method for producing sparse barycentric coordinates in polytopes will be discussed. It uses a purely algebraic treatment of affine spaces and convex sets, with barycentric algebras. The method is based on a certain decomposition of each finite-dimensional convex polytope into a union of simplices of the same dimension.

Asymptotic Log-concavity of Dominant Lower Bruhat Intervals via Brunn--Minkowski Inequality
Björner and Ekedahl [Ann. of Math. (2), 170.2(2009), pp. 799--817] pioneered the study of length-counting sequences associated with parabolic lower Bruhat intervals in crystallographic Coxeter groups. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of these sequences in affine Weyl groups. Let $W$ be an affine Weyl group with corresponding Weyl group $W_f$ and ${}^{f}{W}$ be the set of minimal representatives for the right cosets $W_f \backslash W$. Let $t_λ$ be the translation by a dominant coroot lattice element $λ$ and ${}^{f}{b}_i^{t_λ}$ be the number of elements of length $i$ below $t_λ$ in the Bruhat order on ${}^{f}{W}$. We show that the sequence $({}^{f}{b}_i^{t_λ})_i$ is ''asymptotically log-concave'' in the following sense: The sequence of discrete measures $(\mathfrak{m}_k)_k$ constructed from the $k$-fold dilated sequence $({}^{f}{b}_i^{t_{kλ}})_i$, as $k$ tends to infinity, converges weakly to a continuous measure obtained from a polytope $P^λ$. Moreover, the sequence of step functions $(S_k)_k$ of $({}^{f}{b}_i^{t_{kλ}})_i$ converges uniformly to the density function of this continuous measure. By Brunn--Minkowski inequality, this density is log-concave.

Mirković-Vilonen Polytopes from Combinatorics
Mirković-Vilonen (MV) polytopes are a class of generalized permutahedra originating from geometric representation theory. In this paper we study MV polytopes coming from matroid polytopes, flag matroid polytopes, Bruhat interval polytopes, and Schubitopes. We give classifications and combinatorial conditions for when these polytopes are MV polytopes. We also describe how the crystal structure on MV polytopes manifests combinatorially in these situations. As a special case, we show that the Newton polytopes of Schubert polynomials and key polynomials are MV polytopes.

Equivariant Ehrhart theory, commutative algebra and invariant triangulations of polytopes
Ehrhart theory is the study of the enumeration of lattice points in lattice polytopes. Equivariant Ehrhart theory is a generalization of Ehrhart theory that takes into account the action of a finite group acting via affine transformations on the underlying lattice and preserving the polytope. We further develop equivariant Ehrhart theory in part by establishing connections with commutative algebra as well as the question of when there exists an invariant lattice triangulation of a lattice polytope.

On the Structure of Permutation Invariant Parking
We continue the study of parking assortments, a generalization of parking functions introduced by Chen, Harris, Martínez, Pabón-Cancel, and Sargent. Given $n$ cars of lengths $\mathbf{y}=(y_1,y_2,\dots,y_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$, we focus on the sets $\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y})$ and $\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv},\uparrow}_n(\mathbf{y})$ of permutation invariant (resp. nondecreasing) parking assortments for $\mathbf{y}$. For $\mathbf{x} \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y})$, we introduce the degree of $\mathbf{x}$, the number of non-$1$ entries of $\mathbf{x}$, and the characteristic $χ(\mathbf{y})$ of $\mathbf{y}$, the greatest degree of $\mathbf{z} \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y})$. We establish direct necessary conditions for $\mathbf{y}$ with $χ(\mathbf{y})=0$ and a characterization for $\mathbf{y}$ with $χ(\mathbf{y})=n-1$. For the latter, we derive a closed form for its invariant parking set and enumerate its size using properties of the Pitman-Stanley polytope. Next, we prove closure and embedding properties of the invariant parking set. We apply these results to study the degree as a function and the characteristic under sequences of successive prefix length vectors. We then examine the invariant solution set $\mathcal{W}(\mathbf{y})=\{ w \in \mathbb{N}:(1^{n-1},w) \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y}) \}$. We obtain tight upper bounds of this set and prove that its size is at most $2^{n-1}$, providing constraints on the subsequence sums of $\mathbf{y}$ for equality to hold. Finally, we show that if $\mathbf{x} \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv},\uparrow}_n(\mathbf{y})$, then $\mathbf{x} \in \{ 1 \}^{n-χ(\mathbf{y})} \times \mathcal{W}(\mathbf{y})^{χ(\mathbf{y})}$, which implies a new upper bound on $|\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv},\uparrow}_n(\mathbf{y})|$. Our results generalize several theorems by Chen et al.
