Eulerian posets and $Z$-polynomials
Let $P$ be a finite partially ordered set. In a recent series of works, Proudfoot introduced the notion of $Z$-polynomials associated with $P$-kernels, providing a unified framework for various intersection cohomology Poincaré polynomials arising in diverse areas of mathematics. One of the problems posed by Proudfoot was to interpret the $Z$-polynomial in a fundamental setting -- namely, when $P$ is the lattice of faces of a convex polytope (or, more generally, an Eulerian poset). We resolve this problem by proving that the $Z$-polynomial of any Eulerian poset coincides with the toric $h$-polynomial of the poset of all (possibly empty) closed intervals of $P$, ordered by reverse inclusion. Under suitable polyhedral conditions, this result identifies the $Z$-polynomial of a polytope with the Poincaré polynomial of the intersection cohomology of an associated auxiliary polytope. We prove some results about the Chow polynomials of the poset of intervals of an Eulerian poset and relate them with the Veronese transforms on polynomials.
Para-exceptional sequences for tame hereditary algebras and McCammond-Sulway lattices
Noncrossing partition posets in a Coxeter group $W$ can fail to be lattices when $W$ is not finite. When the lattice property fails for $W$ of affine type, McCammond and Sulway's construction provides a larger lattice that contains the noncrossing partition poset and that furthermore is a combinatorial Garside structure. We construct a lattice, isomorphic to McCammond and Sulway's lattice, using the representation theory of a corresponding connected tame hereditary algebra and give a representation-theoretic proof that it is a combinatorial Garside structure. To construct the lattice, we introduce para-exceptional sequences and para-exceptional subcategories in the module categories of tame hereditary algebras. Para-exceptional sequences are generalizations of exceptional sequences obtained by enlarging the set of allowed entries to include all non-homogeneous bricks. A para-exceptional subcategory is a subcategory obtained by applying a certain closure-like operator to the wide subcategory generated by a para-exceptional sequence.
Combinatorial equivalence of separable elements in types $A$ and $B$
We study the combinatorial equivalence of separable elements in types $A$ and $B$. A bijection is constructed from the set of separable permutations in the symmetric group $S_{n+1}$ to the set of separable signed permutations in the hyperoctahedral group $B_n$. This bijection preserves descent statistics and induces a poset isomorphism under the left weak order. As a consequence, separable signed permutations are enumerated by the large Schröder numbers, and their descent polynomials are shown to be $γ$-positive. Building on a recursive characterization of separable signed permutations via direct sum and skew sum operations, we derive explicit product formulas for the rank generating functions of the principal upper and lower ideals of separable signed permutations under the left weak order.
Stable hyperplane arrangements
We classify complex hyperplane arrangements $\mathcal A$ whose intersection posets $L(\mathcal A)$ satisfy $L(\mathcal A)=π_i^{-1}\circπ_i\bigl(L(\mathcal A)\bigr)$ for $i=1,\dots,n$. Here $π_i$ denotes the projection from $\mathbb C^n$ onto $\mathbb C^{n-1}$ defined by that forgets the coordinate $x_i$ of $(x_1,\dots,x_n)\in\mathbb C^n$, and $π_i\bigl(L(\mathcal A)\bigr)=\{π_i(S)\mid S\in L(\mathcal A)\}$. We show that such arrangements $\mathcal A$ arise as pullbacks of the mirror hyperplanes of complex reflection groups of type $A$ or $B$.

In one of his papers on the weak order of Coxeter groups, Dyer formulates several conjectures. Among these, one affirms that the extended weak order forms a lattice, while another offers an algebraic-geometric description of the join of two elements in this poset. The former was recently proven for affine types by Barkley and Speyer. In this paper, we establish the latter for Coxeter groups of types $A$ and $I$. Moreover, we verified the validity of this conjecture for types $H_3$ and $F_4$ through the use of Sage.
The poset of maximal tubings of the cycle graph is a lattice
The poset of maximal tubings of a graph generalizes several well-known and remarkable partial orders. Notable examples include the weak Bruhat order and the Tamari lattice, posets of maximal tubings for the complete graph and the path graph, respectively. It is an open problem to characterize graphs for which the poset of maximal tubings is a lattice. In this paper, we prove that the poset of maximal tubings for the cycle graph is a lattice, and moreover that it is semidistributive and congruence uniform. As main tools, we characterize all order relations in the poset, and introduce a useful map from maximal tubings of the cycle graph to maximal tubings of the path graph.
Intersection cohomology without spaces
We survey three settings in which dimensions of intersection cohomology groups of algebraic varieties provide deep combinatorial and representation-theoretic information, and computations of the groups themselves have been made using combinatorial sheaves on finite posets. These settings are (1) intersection cohomology of Schubert varieties, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and their realizations via moment graph sheaves and Soergel bimodules; (2) intersection cohomology of toric varieties, the associated g-polynomials of convex polytopes, and their realization via the theory of intersection cohomology of fans; and (3) intersection cohomology of arrangement Schubert varieties, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of matroids, and their realization via intersection cohomology of matroids. In all three settings these constructions are valid in more general situations where the variety does not exist, leading to "intersection cohomology without spaces." We give parallel presentations of these three stories, highlighting applications to KLS-polynomials.
A recursive approach for the determination of the nice sections of width three which have a 4-crown stack as retract
The characterization of the finite minimal automorphic posets of width three is still an open problem. Niederle has shown that this task can be reduced to the characterization of the nice sections of width three having a non-trivial tower of nice sections as retract. In our article, we characterize those of them which have a 4-crown stack as retract and we develop a recursive approach for their determination. We apply the approach on a sub-class $\mathfrak{N}_2$ of nice sections of width three and determine all posets in $\mathfrak{N}_2$ with height up to six having a 4-crown stack as retract. For each integer $n \geq 2$, the class $\mathfrak{N}_2$ contains $2^{n-2}$ different isomorphism types of posets of height $n$.
$(P,φ)$-Tamari lattices
Given any poset $P$ and chain $φ$ in $P$, we define the $(P,φ)$-Tamari lattice. We study in depth these lattices and prove in particular that they are join-semidistributive, join-congruence uniform and left modular. We prove that the lattices of higher torsion classes of the higher Auslander and Nakayama algebras of type $\mathbb{A}$ are examples of $(P,φ)$-Tamari lattices and thus they inherit their properties. We also give general results related to left modular, extremal and congruence normal lattices.
Cube Height, Cube Width and Related Extremal Problems for Posets
Given a poset $P$, a family $\mathcal{S}=\{S_x:x\in P\}$ of sets indexed by the elements of $P$ is called an inclusion representation of $P$ if $x\leqslant y$ in $P$ if and only if $S_x\subseteq S_y$. The cube height of a poset is the least non-negative integer $h$ such that $P$ has an inclusion representation for which every set has size at most $h$. In turn, the cube width of $P$ is the least non-negative integer $w$ for which there is an inclusion representation $\mathcal{S}$ of $P$ such that $|\bigcup\mathcal{S}|=w$ and every set in $\mathcal{S}$ has size at most the cube height of $P$. In this paper, we show that the cube width of a poset never exceeds the size of its ground set, and we characterize those posets for which this inequality is tight. Our research prompted us to investigate related extremal problems for posets and inclusion representations. Accordingly, the results for cube width are obtained as extensions of more comprehensive results that we believe to be of independent interest.
Extending the ab-index
We prove for finite, graded, bounded posets, that the Poincaré-extended ab-index is obtained from the ab-index via the omega-transformation. This proves a conjecture by Dorpalen-Barry, Maglione, and the second author, and provides a more conceptual approach to ab-indices and Chow polynomials beyond R-labeled posets.
Optimal Embeddings of Posets in Hypercubes
Given a finite poset $\mathcal P$, the hypercube-height, denoted by $h^*(\mathcal P)$, is defined to be the largest $h$ such that, for any natural number $n$, the subsets of $[n]$ of size less than $h$ do not contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. The hypercube-width, denoted by $w^*(\mathcal P)$, is the smallest $w$ such that the subsets of $[w]$ of size at most $h^*(\mathcal P)$ contain an induced copy of $\mathcal P$. In other words, $h^*(\mathcal P)$ asks how `low' can a poset be embedded, and $w^*(\mathcal P)$ asks for the first hypercube in which such an `optimal' embedding occurs.
These notions were introduced by Bastide, Groenland, Ivan and Johnston in connection to upper bounds for the poset saturation numbers. While it is not hard to see that $h^*(\mathcal P)\leq |\mathcal P|-1$ (and this bound can be tight), the hypercube-width has proved to be much more elusive. It was shown by the authors mentioned above that $w^*(\mathcal P)\leq|\mathcal P|^2/4$, but they conjectured that in fact $w^*(\mathcal P)\leq |\mathcal P|$ for any finite poset $\mathcal P$.
In this paper we prove this conjecture. The proof uses Hall's theorem for bipartite graphs as a precision tool for modifing an existing copy of our poset.
Torus Actions on Matrix Schubert and Kazhdan-Lusztig Varieties, and their Links to Statistical Models
We investigate the toric geometry of two families of generalised determinantal varieties arising from permutations: Matrix Schubert varieties ($\overline{X_w}$) and Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties ($\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$). Matrix Schubert varieties can be written as $\overline{X_w} = Y_w \times \mathbb C^d$, where $d$ is maximal. We are especially interested in the structure and complexity of these varieties $Y_w$ and $\mathcal{N}_{v,w}$ under the so-called usual torus actions. In the case when $Y_w$ is toric, we provide a full characterisation of the simple reflections $s_i$ that render ${Y_{w \cdot s_i}}$ toric, as well as the corresponding changes to the weight cone. For Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties, we consider how moving one of the two permutations $v,w$ along a chain in the Bruhat poset affects their complexity. Additionally, we study the complexity of these varieties, for permutations $v$ and $w$ of a specific structure. Finally, we consider the links between these determinantal varieties and two classes of statistical models; namely conditional independence and quasi-independence models.
Planar ternary graphs, flag spheres, and Delannoy polynomials
In 2022 Kim showed when a graph $G$ is ternary (without induced cycles of length divisible by three), its independence complex $\text{Ind}(G)$ is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a sphere. In this paper, we show that when $\text{Ind}(G)$ is homotopy equivalent to a sphere of dimension $\dim \text{Ind}(G)$, the complex is Gorenstein. Equivalently, $G$ is a $1$-well-covered graph. This answers a question by Faridi and Holleben.
We then focus on the independence complexes of Gorenstein planar ternary graphs. We prove that they are boundaries of vertex decomposable simplicial polytopes. We show that the transformations among these flag spheres using edge subdivisions and contractions can be modeled by the Hasse diagram of the partition refinement poset. In addition, their $h$-polynomials are products of Delannoy polynomials and thus real-rooted. Finally, we demonstrate a way to construct nonplanar Gorenstein ($1$-well-covered) ternary graphs from planar ones.
Majority relations for Condorcet domains of tiling type
Condorcet domains are subsets of permutations arising in voting theory: regarding their permutations as preference orders on a list of candidates, one avoids Condorcet's paradox when aggregating the preferences via a simple majority relation. We use poset theory to show that, for the subclass of Condorcet domains of tiling type, the majority rule has stronger properties. We then develop techniques to predict the majority rule explicitly for the uniform vote tally on Condorcet domains of tiling type, and apply this to several well-known examples.
Cohomology of non-finite CL-shellable posets
Shellable complexes are homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres of possibly different dimensions, so that the (co)homology of the constant functor over the complex is concentrated in those degrees. In this work, we introduce the concept of a stable functor -- a local weakening of fibrancy -- over a shellable poset, which ensures the vanishing of the (co)homology of such a functor in specific degrees. The methods are based on a model category structure on the category of functors indexed by a filtered poset and the combinatorial structure of shellable posets. Our techniques work over non-finite and non-pure posets and employ a description of (co)homology via explicit fibrant replacements. Applications include acyclicity criteria for Mackey functors, computation of cohomology of $j$-th exterior powers over arrangement lattices, and homological decompositions for Bianchi groups $Γ_d$ for $d=1,2,7$ and $11$.
Smaller universal posets
We show that there is a constant $C>0$ such that for each integer $n\geq 1$, there is a poset on at most $2^{2n/3+C\sqrt{n}}$ elements that contains each $n$-element poset as an (induced) subposet.
Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices and posets
Huh-Stevens and Ferroni-Schröter independently conjectured that Hilbert-Poincaré series of Chow rings of geometric lattices have only real zeros. Ferroni, Matherne and the second author extended this conjecture to Chow polynomials of Cohen-Macaulay poset. In this paper we address the above conjectures by providing new defining relations and properties of Chow functions of posets and matrices. These are used, in conjunction with new techniques on interlacing sequences of polynomials, to prove that Chow polynomials of totally nonnegative matrices have only real zeros, which, in turn, proves the above conjectures for a class of posets that contains projective and affine geometries, face lattices of cubical polytopes, partition lattices and Dowling lattices, perfect matroid designs, and lattices of flats of paving matroids. We also study Chow polynomials of Toeplitz matrices in greater detail, and show how these are related the combinatorics of binomial and Sheffer posets, as well as to a family of generalized Eulerian polynomials with coefficients in the ring of symmetric polynomials that have been studied by e.g. Stanley, Brenti, Stembridge and Shareshian-Wachs.
Facial nested complexes and acyclonestohedra
We study nested complexes of building sets on the Las Vergnas face lattices of oriented matroids. Such a nested complex is the face lattice of an oriented matroid, obtained by iterated stellar subdivisions of the positive tope. If the oriented matroid is realizable, the nested complex is isomorphic to the boundary complex of a polytope.
We turn this into an explicit and combinatorially meaningful polytopal realization. We prove that the facial nested complex can be embedded as the acyclic subcomplex of the nested complex of a well-chosen boolean building set. In the realizable case, we show that this acyclic subcomplex can be geometrically selected as the section of a nestohedron by the evaluation space of the vector configuration, which we call acyclonestohedron.
Our framework generalizes the poset associahedra recently introduced by P. Galashin, from order polytopes to any polytope. Poset associahedra are the graphical acyclonestohedra, and our approach recovers as particular cases the main results of P. Galashin and answers some of his open questions. Besides poset associahedra, our framework unifies various other existing families of nested-like polytopes, such as the simple polytope nestohedra, the hyperoctahedral nestohedra, the design graph associahedra and the permutopermutohedra, to which our palette of results can be directly applied.
The core of our construction is the embedding of the facial nested complex inside a boolean nested complex. More generally, we provide conditions that guarantee an embedding between nested complexes over two lattices. For instance, any atomic nested complex has a canonical embedding inside a boolean nested complex. As another application, we embed nested complexes over lattices of faces into nested complexes over lattices of flats, recovering as a particular case, the embedding of the positive Bergman complex into the Bergman complex.
Generalized $f$-Eulerian polynomials: zeros and hypergeometric representations with applications
In this paper, we explore (slightly generalized) $f$-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Stanley and frequently appearing in combinatorics. Notable special cases include the classical Eulerian polynomials, the generating polynomials of order polynomials for certain labeled posets, and the $d$-Narayana polynomials. We establish simple sufficient conditions for the reality (and sign) of their zeros and present implications for total positivity of sequences generated by values of polynomials at integers. We further relate these polynomials to generalized Euler's transformations for the generalized hypergeometric functions with integral parameter differences. Exploiting this and other hypergeometric connections, we provide purely hypergeometric proofs for various known and some new properties of $d$-Narayana polynomials. Another family encompassed by our definition of the generalized $f$-Eulerian polynomials is that of Jacobi-Piñeiro type II multiple orthogonal polynomials. Their zero location can thus be analyzed, for both canonical and non-canonical parameter values, without invoking orthogonality. Finally, we present several connection formulas relating $d$-Narayana polynomials to particular Jacobi-Piñeiro polynomials.
