On an extremal problem for poset dimension
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $f(n)$ be the largest integer such that every poset on $n$ elements has a $2$-dimensional subposet on $f(n)$ elements. What is the asymptotics of $f(n)$? It is easy to see that $f(n)\geqslant n^{1/2}$. We improve the best known upper bound and show $f(n)=\mathcal{O}(n^{2/3})$. For higher dimensions, we show $f_d(n)=\mathcal{O}\left(n^\frac{d}{d+1}\right)$, where $f_d(n)$ is the largest integer such that every poset on $n$ elements has a $d$-dimensional subposet on $f_d(n)$ elements.

Representations of weakly multiplicative arithmetic matroids are unique
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 23 (2019), no. 2, 335-346 • View PublicationBIB
An arithmetic matroid is weakly multiplicative if the multiplicity of at least one of its bases is equal to the product of the multiplicities of its elements. We show that if such an arithmetic matroid can be represented by an integer matrix, then this matrix is uniquely determined. This implies that the integer cohomology ring of a centred toric arrangement whose arithmetic matroid is weakly multiplicative is determined by its poset of layers. This partially answers a question asked by Callegaro-Delucchi.

d-Complete posets: local structural axioms, properties, and equivalent definitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Although d-complete posets arose along the interface between algebraic combinatorics and Lie theory, they are defined using only requirements on their local structure. These posets are a mutual generalization of rooted trees, shapes, and shifted shapes. They possess Stanley's hook product property for their P-partition generating functions and Schutzenberger's well defined jeu de taquin rectification property. The original definition of d-complete poset was lengthy, but more succinct definitions were later developed. Here several definitions are shown to be equivalent. The basic properties of d-complete posets are summarized. Background and a partial bibliography for these posets is given.

Generalized Projections in Zn

We consider the ring $\mathbb Z_n$ (integers modulo $n$) with the partial order `$\leq$' given by `$a \leq b$ if either $a=b$ or $a\equiv ab~(mod~n)$'. In this paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the poset ($\mathbb Z_n,~\leq$) to be a lattice.

Geometric Symmetric Chain Decompositions
We create a framework for studying symmetric chain decompositions of families of finite posets based on the geometry of polytopes. Our framework unifies almost all known results regarding symmetric chain decompositions of the Young posets $L(m,n)$ --- arising as cells in the Bruhat decomposition of quotients of $SL_{m+n+1}$ --- and yields unexpected new results. The methods we provide are geometric in nature, systematic, and totally amenable to human analysis. This allows us to discover new phenomena which are impenetrable to casework and brute force computer search. In particular, our method yields perfect and near perfect decompositions of various families of posets, which are intractable by known methods. A fundamental tool we use is geometrical projection, which in our framework cleanly unifies many different types of induction; as we move a point from which we project between faces of our polytope, we alter the type of induction. Moreover, projection allows us to decrease dimension and therefore obtain a clear geometric intuition. We also provide additional tools for producing decompositions, and discuss how the various decompositions behave under products.

Lipschitz polytopes of posets and permutation statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce Lipschitz functions on a finite partially ordered set $P$ and study the associated Lipschitz polytope $L(P)$. The geometry of $L(P)$ can be described in terms of descent-compatible permutations and permutation statistics that generalize descents and big ascents. For ranked posets, Lipschitz polytopes are centrally-symmetric and Gorenstein, which implies symmetry and unimodality of the statistics. Finally, we define $(P,k)$-hypersimplices as generalizations of classical hypersimplices and give combinatorial interpretations of their volumes and $h^*$-vectors.
Families in posets minimizing the number of comparable pairs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a poset $P$ we say a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq P$ is centered if it is obtained by `taking sets as close to the middle layer as possible'. A poset $P$ is said to have the centeredness property if for any $M$, among all families of size $M$ in $P$, centered families contain the minimum number of comparable pairs. Kleitman showed that the Boolean lattice $\{0,1\}^n$ has the centeredness property. It was conjectured by Noel, Scott, and Sudakov, and by Balogh and Wagner, that the poset $\{0,1,\ldots,k\}^n$ also has the centeredness property, provided $n$ is sufficiently large compared to $k$. We show that this conjecture is false for all $k\geq 2$ and investigate the range of $M$ for which it holds. Further, we improve a result of Noel, Scott, and Sudakov by showing that the poset of subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ has the centeredness property. Several open questions are also given.

Weighted sheaves and homology of Artin groups
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 18 (2018) 3943-4000 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we expand the theory of weighted sheaves over posets, and use it to study the local homology of Artin groups. First, we use such theory to relate the homology of classical braid groups with the homology of certain independence complexes of graphs. Then, in the context of discrete Morse theory on weighted sheaves, we introduce a particular class of acyclic matchings. Explicit formulas for the homology of the corresponding Morse complexes are given, in terms of the ranks of the associated incidence matrices. We use such method to perform explicit computations for the new affine case $\tilde C_n$, as well as for the cases $A_n$, $B_n$ and $\tilde{A}_n$ (which were already done before by different methods).

The weighted poset metrics and directed graph metrics
Etzion et al. introduced metrics on $\mathbb{F}_2^n$ based on directed graphs on $n$ vertices and developed some basic coding theory on directed graph metric spaces. In this paper, we consider the problem of classifying directed graphs which admit the extended Hamming codes to be a perfect code. We first consider weighted poset metrics as a natural generalization of poset metrics and investigate interrelation between weighted poset metrics and directed graph based metrics. In the next, we classify weighted posets on a set with eight elements and directed graphs on eight vertices which admit the extended Hamming code $\widetilde{\mathcal{H}}_3$ to be a $2$-perfect code. We also construct some families of such structures for any $k \geq 3$. Those families enable us to construct packing or covering codes of radius 2 under certain maps.
Residues modulo powers of two in the Young-Fibonacci lattice
We study the subgraph of the Young-Fibonacci graph induced by elements with odd $f$-statistic (the $f$-statistic of an element $w$ of a differential graded poset is the number of saturated chains from the minimal element of the poset to $w$). We show that this subgraph is a binary tree. Moreover, the odd residues of the $f$-statistics in a row of this tree equidistibute modulo any power two. This is equivalent to a purely number theoretic result about the equidistribution of residues modulo powers of two among the products of distinct odd numbers less than a fixed number.

Planar graphs and Stanley's Chromatic Functions
This article is dedicated to the study of positivity phenomena for the chromatic symmetric function of a graph with respect to various bases of symmetric functions. We give a new proof of Gasharov's theorem on the Schur-positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a $(3 + 1)$-free poset. We present a combinatorial interpretation of the Schur-coefficients in terms of planar networks. Compared to Gasharov's proof, it gives a clearer visual illustration of the cancellation procedures and is quite similar in spirit to the proof of monomial positivity of Schur functions via the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot lemma. We apply a similar device to the $e$-positivity problem of chromatic functions. Following Stanley, we analyze certain analogs of symmetric functions attached to graphs instead of working with chromatic symmetric functions of graphs directly. We introduce a new combinatorial object: the correct sequences of unit interval orders, and, using these, we reprove monomial positivity of $G$-analogues of the power sum symmetric functions.

A new approach to $e$-positivity for Stanley's chromatic functions
In this paper, we study positivity phenomena for the $e$-coefficients of Stanley's chromatic function of a graph. We introduce a new combinatorial object: the {\em correct} sequences of unit interval orders, and using these, in certain cases, we succeed to construct combinatorial models of the coefficients appearing in Stanley's conjecture. Our main result is the proof of positivity of the coefficients $c_{n-k,1^k}$, $c_{n-2,2}$, $c_{n-3,2,1}$ and $c_{2^k,1^{n-2k}}$ of the expansion of the chromatic symmetric function in terms of the basis of the elementary symmetric polynomials for the case of $(3+1)$-free posets.

Explicit expressions for the moments of the size of an (n, dn-1)-core partition with distinct parts
In a previous paper (arXiv:1608.02262), we used computer-assisted methods to find explicit expressions for the moments of the size of a uniform random (n,n+1)-core partition with distinct parts. In particular, we conjectured that the distribution is asymptotically normal. However, our analysis hinged on a characterization of (n,n+1)-core partitions given by Straub, which is not readily generalized to other families of simultaneous core partitions. In another paper (arXiv:1611.05775) with Doron Zeilberger, we made use of the characterization in terms of posets to analyze (2n+1,2n+3)-core partitions with distinct parts; here, the distribution was found not to be asymptotically normal. Our method involved finding recursive structure in the relevant sequence of posets. We remarked that this method is applicable to other families of core partitions, provided that one can understand the corresponding posets. Here, we use the poset method (and, as before, a computer) to analyze (n,dn-1)-core partitions with distinct parts, where d is a natural number. (This problem was introduced by Straub in arXiv:1601.07161.) We exhibit formulas for the moments of the size, as functions of d with n fixed, and vice versa. We conjecture that the distribution is asymptotically normal as n approaches infinity. Finally, we find formulas for the first few moments, as functions of both n and d.

On Incidence Algebras and their Representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a unified approach, via deformations of incidence algebras, to several important types of representations with finiteness conditions, as well as the combinatorial algebras which produce them. We show that over finite dimensional algebras, representations with finitely many orbits, or finitely many invariant subspaces, or distributive coincide, and further coincide with thin modules in the acyclic case. Incidence algebras produce examples of such modules, and we show that algebras which are locally hereditary, and whose projective are distributive, or equivalently, which have finitely many ideals, are precisely the deformations of incidence algebras, and they are the finite dimensional algebra analogue of Pr${\rm \ddot{u}}$fer rings. New characterizations of incidence algebras are obtained, such as they are exactly algebras which have a faithful thin module. A main consequence is that "every thin module comes from an incidence algebra": if $V$ is either a thin module over a finite dimensional algebra $A$, or $V$ is distributive and $A$ is acyclic, then $A/{\rm ann}(V)$ is an incidence algebra and $V$ can be presented as its defining representation. We classify thin/distributive modules, and respectively deformations, of incidence algebras in terms of first and second cohomology of the simplicial realization of the poset. As a main application we obtain a complete classification of thin modules over any finite dimensional algebra. Their moduli spaces are multilinear varieties, and we show that any multilinear variety can be obtained in this way. A few other applications, to Grothendieck rings of combinatorial algebras, to graphs and their incidence matrices, to linear algebra (tori actions on matrices), and to a positive answer to the "no-gap conjecture" of Ringel and Bongartz, in the distributive case, are given. Other results in the literature are re-derived.

Counterexamples to conjectures about Subset Takeaway and counting linear extensions of a Boolean lattice

We develop an algorithm for efficiently computing recursively defined functions on posets. We illustrate this algorithm by disproving conjectures about the game Subset Takeaway (Chomp on a hypercube) and computing the number of linear extensions of the lattice of a 7-cube and related lattices.
Diamond-colored distributive lattices, move-minimizing games, and fundamental Weyl symmetric functions: The type $\mathsf{A}$ case
We present some elementary but foundational results concerning diamond-colored modular and distributive lattices and connect these structures to certain one-player combinatorial "move-minimizing games," in particular, a so-called "domino game." The objective of this game is to find, if possible, the least number of "domino moves" to get from one partition to another, where a domino move is, with one exception, the addition or removal of a domino-shaped pair of tiles. We solve this domino game by demonstrating the somewhat surprising fact that the associated "game graphs" coincide with a well-known family of diamond-colored distributive lattices which shall be referred to as the "type $\mathsf{A}$ fundamental lattices." These lattices arise as supporting graphs for the fundamental representations of the special linear Lie algebras and as splitting posets for type $\mathsf{A}$ fundamental symmetric functions, connections which are further explored in sequel papers for types $\mathsf{A}$, $\mathsf{C}$, and $\mathsf{B}$. In this paper, this connection affords a solution to the proposed domino game as well as new descriptions of the type $\mathsf{A}$ fundamental lattices.

On the poset and asymptotics of Tesler Matrices
Tesler matrices are certain integral matrices counted by the Kostant partition function and have appeared recently in Haglund's study of diagonal harmonics. In 2014, Drew Armstrong defined a poset on such matrices and conjectured that the characteristic polynomial of this poset is a power of $(q-1)$. We use a method of Hallam and Sagan to prove a stronger version of this conjecture for posets of a certain class of generalized Tesler matrices. We also study bounds for the number of Tesler matrices and how they compare to the number of parking functions, the dimension of the space of diagonal harmonics.

The weak order on integer posets
Published in Alg. Comb., 2(1):1-48, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We explore lattice structures on integer binary relations (i.e. binary relations on the set $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ for a fixed integer $n$) and on integer posets (i.e. partial orders on the set $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ for a fixed integer $n$). We first observe that the weak order on the symmetric group naturally extends to a lattice structure on all integer binary relations. We then show that the subposet of this weak order induced by integer posets defines as well a lattice. We finally study the subposets of this weak order induced by specific families of integer posets corresponding to the elements, the intervals, and the faces of the permutahedron, the associahedron, and some recent generalizations of those.

Two properties of maximal antichains in strict chain product posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present two results on maximal antichains in the strict chain product poset $[t_1+1]\times[t_2+1]\times\ldots\times[t_n+1]$. First, we prove that these maximal antichains are also maximum. Second, we prove that there is a bijection between maximal antichains in the strict chain product poset $[t_1+1]\times[t_2+1]\times\ldots\times[t_n+1]$ and antichains in the non-strict chain product poset $[t_1]\times[t_2]\times\ldots\times[t_n]$.
