Hafnian of two-parameter matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of the hafnian first appeared in the works on quantum field theory by E. R. Caianiello. However, it also has an important combinatorial property: the hafnian of the adjacency matrix of an undirected weighted graph is equal to the total sum of the weights of perfect matchings in this graph. In general, the use of the hafnian is limited by the complexity of its computation. In this paper, we present an efficient method for the exact calculation of the hafnian of two-parameter matrices. In terms of graphs, we count the total sum of the weights of perfect matchings in graphs whose edge weights take only two values. This method is based on the formula expressing the hafnian of a sum of two matrices through the product of the hafnians of their submatrices. The necessary condition for the application of this method is the possibility to count the number of k-edge matchings in some graphs. We consider two special cases in detail using a Toeplitz matrix as the two-parameter matrix. As an example, we propose a new interpretation of some of the sequences from the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences and then provide new analytical formulas to count the number of certain linear chord diagrams.

Renormalization of quasisymmetric functions
As a natural basis of the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, monomial quasisymmetric functions are formal power series defined from compositions. The same definition applies to left weak compositions, while leads to divergence for other weak compositions. We adapt the method of renormalization in quantum field theory, in the framework of Connes and Kreimer, to deal with such divergency. This approach defines monomial quasisymmetric functions for any weak composition as power series while extending the quasi-shuffle (stuffle) relation satisfied by the usual quasisymmetric functions. The algebra of renormalized quasisymmetric functions thus obtained turns out to be isomorphic to the quasi-shuffle algebra of weak compositions, giving the former a natural Hopf algebra structure and the latter a power series realization. This isomorphism also gives the free commutative Rota-Baxter algebra a power series realization, in support of a suggestion of Rota that Rota-Baxter algebra should provide a broad context for generalizations of symmetric functions.

An Asymptotic Expansion for the Number of 2-Connected Chord Diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We derive a functional relation between the generating functions of connected chord diagrams and 2-connected chord diagrams. This relation enables us to calculate an asymptotic expansion for the number of 2-connected chord diagrams on $n$ chords. The asymptotic information obtained from this expansion refines the last established results and provides a simple alternative for calculating the asymptotic behaviour of certain Green functions in Quenched QED and Yukawa theory in the context of quantum field theory.

Species-theoretic foundations of perturbative quantum field theory
We develop an algebraic formalism for perturbative quantum field theory (pQFT) which is based on Joyal's combinatorial species. We show that certain basic structures of pQFT are correctly viewed as algebraic structures internal to species, constructed with respect to the Cauchy monoidal product. Aspects of this formalism have appeared in the physics literature, particularly in the work of Bogoliubov-Shirkov, Steinmann, Ruelle, and Epstein-Glaser-Stora. In this paper, we give a fully explicit account in terms of modern theory developed by Aguiar-Mahajan. We describe the central construction of causal perturbation theory as a homomorphism from the Hopf monoid of set compositions, decorated with local observables, into the Wick algebra of microcausal polynomial observables. The operator-valued distributions called (generalized) time-ordered products and (generalized) retarded products are obtained as images of fundamental elements of this Hopf monoid under the curried homomorphism. The perturbative S-matrix scheme corresponds to the so-called universal series, and the property of causal factorization is naturally expressed in terms of the action of the Hopf monoid on itself by Hopf powers, called the Tits product. Given a system of fully renormalized time-ordered products, the perturbative construction of the corresponding interacting products is via an up biderivation of the Hopf monoid, which recovers Bogoliubov's formula.

On the Enumerative Structures in Quantum Field Theory
This thesis addresses a number of enumerative problems that arise in the context of quantum field theory and in the process of renormalization. In particular, the enumeration of rooted connected chord diagrams is further studied and new applications in quenched QED and Yukawa theories are introduced. Chord diagrams appear in quantum field theory in the context of Dyson-Schwinger equations, where, according to recent results, they are used to express the solutions. In another direction, we study the action of point field diffeomorphisms on a free theory. We give a new proof of a vanishing phenomenon for tree-level amplitudes of the transformed theories.

Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and blown up surface defects
Published in JHEP12(2020)006 • View PublicationBIB
The relationship of two dimensional quantum field theory and isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems has a long history. Recently four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories joined the party in a multitude of roles. In this paper we study the vacuum expectation values of intersecting half-BPS surface defects in $SU(2)$ theory with $N_f=4$ fundamental hypermultiplets. We show they form a horizontal section of a Fuchsian system on a sphere with $5$ regular singularities, calculate the monodromy, and define the associated isomonodromic tau-function. Using the blowup formula in the presence of half-BPS surface defects, initiated in the companion paper, we obtain the GIL formula, establishing an unexpected relation of the topological string/free fermion regime of supersymmetric gauge theory to classical integrability.

An exact solution method for the enumeration of connected Feynman diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
We completely generalize previous results related to the counting of connected Feynman diagrams. We use a generating function approach, which encodes the Wick contraction combinatorics of the respective connected diagrams. Exact solutions are found for an arbitrary number of external legs, and a general algorithm is implemented for this calculus. From these solutions, we calculate many asymptotics expansion terms for a simple analytical tool (Taylor expansion theorem). Our approach offers new perspectives in the realm of Feynman diagrams enumeration (or zero-dimensional quantum field theory).

Combinatorial quantum field theory and the Jacobian conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this short review we first recall combinatorial or ($0-$dimensional) quantum field theory (QFT). We then give the main idea of a standard QFT method, called the intermediate field method, and we review how to apply this method to a combinatorial QFT reformulation of the celebrated Jacobian conjecture on the invertibility of polynomial systems. This approach establishes a related theorem concerning partial elimination of variables that implies a reduction of the generic case to the quadratic one. Note that this does not imply solving the Jacobian conjecture, because one needs to introduce a supplementary parameter for the dimension of a certain linear subspace where the system holds.

Hopf monoids, permutohedral cones, and generalized retarded functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The commutative Hopf monoid of set compositions is a fundamental Hopf monoid internal to vector species, having undecorated bosonic Fock space the combinatorial Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions. We construct a geometric realization of this Hopf monoid over the adjoint of the (essentialized) braid hyperplane arrangement, which identifies the monomial basis with signed characteristic functions of the interiors of permutohedral tangent cones. We show that the indecomposable quotient Lie coalgebra is obtained by restricting functions to chambers of the adjoint arrangement, i.e. by quotienting out the higher codimensions. The resulting functions are characterized by the Steinmann relations of axiomatic quantum field theory, demonstrating an equivalence between the Steinmann relations, tangent cones to (generalized) permutohedra, and having algebraic structure internal to species. Our results give a new interpretation of a construction appearing in the mathematically rigorous formulation of renormalization by Epstein-Glaser, called causal perturbation theory. In particular, we show that operator products of time-ordered products correspond to the H-basis of the cocommutative Hopf monoid of set compositions, and generalized retarded products correspond to a spanning set of its primitive part Lie algebra.

Cutting Multiparticle Correlators Down to Size
Published in Phys. Rev. D 101, 036019 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Multiparticle correlators are mathematical objects frequently encountered in quantum field theory and collider physics. By translating multiparticle correlators into the language of graph theory, we can gain new insights into their structure as well as identify efficient ways to manipulate them. In this paper, we highlight the power of this graph-theoretic approach by "cutting open" the vertices and edges of the graphs, allowing us to systematically classify linear relations among multiparticle correlators and develop faster methods for their computation. The naive computational complexity of an $N$-point correlator among $M$ particles is $\mathcal O(M^N)$, but when the pairwise distances between particles can be cast as an inner product, we show that all such correlators can be computed in linear $\mathcal O(M)$ runtime. With the help of new tensorial objects called Energy Flow Moments, we achieve a fast implementation of jet substructure observables like $C_2$ and $D_2$, which are widely used at the Large Hadron Collider to identify boosted hadronic resonances. As another application, we compute the number of leafless multigraphs with $d$ edges up to $d = 16$ (15,641,159), conjecturing that this is the same as the number of independent kinematic polynomials of degree $d$, previously known only to $d=8$ (279).

Next-to$^k$ leading log expansions by chord diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
Green functions in a quantum field theory can be expanded as bivariate series in the coupling and a scale parameter. The leading logs are given by the main diagonal of this expansion, i.e. the subseries where the coupling and the scale parameter appear to the same power; then the next-to leading logs are listed by the next diagonal of the expansion, where the power of the coupling is incremented by one, and so on. We give a general method for deriving explicit formulas and asymptotic estimates for any next-to$^k$ leading-log expansion for a large class of single scale Green functions. These Green functions are solutions to Dyson-Schwinger equations that are known by previous work to be expressible in terms of chord diagrams. We look in detail at the Green function for the fermion propagator in massless Yukawa theory as one example, and the Green function of the photon propagator in quantum electrodynamics as a second example, as well as giving general theorems. Our methods are combinatorial, but the consequences are physical, giving information on which terms dominate and on the dichotomy between gauge theories and other quantum field theories.

Geometries in perturbative quantum field theory
In perturbative quantum field theory one encounters certain, very specific geometries over the integers. These perturbative quantum geometries determine the number contents of the amplitude considered. In the article `Modular forms in quantum field theory' F. Brown and the author report on a first list of perturbative quantum geometries using the $c_2$-invariant in $φ^4$ theory. A main tool was denominator reduction which allowed the authors to examine graphs up to loop order (first Betti number) 10. We introduce an improved quadratic denominator reduction which makes it possible to extend the previous results to loop order 11 (and partially orders 12 and 13). For comparison, also non-$φ^4$ graphs are investigated. Here, we extend the results from loop order 9 to 10. The new database of 4801 unique $c_2$-invariants (previously 157) -- while being consistent with all major $c_2$-conjectures -- leads to a more refined picture of perturbative quantum geometries. In the appendix, Friedrich Knop proves a Chevalley-Warning-Ax theorem for double covers of affine space.

Nested Catalan tables and a recurrence relation in noncommutative quantum field theory
Published in Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincare D (2021) 8:377-458 • View PublicationBIB
Correlation functions in a dynamic quartic matrix model are obtained from the two-point function through a recurrence relation. This paper gives the explicit solution of the recurrence by mapping it bijectively to a two-fold nested combinatorial structure each counted by Catalan numbers. These `nested Catalan tables' have a description as diagrams of non-crossing chords and threads.

Tropical quantum field theory, mirror polyvector fields, and multiplicities of tropical curves
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce algebraic structures on the polyvector fields of an algebraic torus that serve to compute multiplicities in tropical and log Gromov-Witten theory while also connecting to the mirror symmetry dual deformation theory of complex structures. Most notably these structures include a tropical quantum field theory and an $L_{\infty}$-structure. The latter is an instance of Getzler's gravity algebra, and the $l_2$-bracket is a restriction of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. We explain the relationship to string topology in the appendix (thanks to Janko Latschev).

A multidimensional generalization of Symanzik polynomials
Symanzik polynomials are defined on Feynman graphs and they are used in quantum field theory to compute Feynman amplitudes. They also appear in mathematics from different perspectives. For example, recent results show that they allow to describe asymptotic limits of geometric quantities associated to families of Riemann surfaces. In this paper, we propose a generalization of Symanzik polynomials to the setting of higher dimensional simplicial complexes and study their basic properties and applications. We state a duality relation between these generalized Symanzik polynomials and what we call Kirchhoff polynomials, which have been introduced in recent generalizations of Kirchhoff's matrix-tree theorem to simplicial complexes. Moreover, we obtain geometric invariants which compute interesting data on triangulable manifolds. As the name indicates, these invariants do not depend on the chosen triangulation. We furthermore prove a stability theorem concerning the ratio of Symanzik polynomials which extends a stability theorem of Amini to higher dimensional simplicial complexes. In order to show that theorem, we will make great use of matroids, and provide a complete classification of the connected components of the exchange graph of a matroid, a graph which encodes the exchange properties between independent sets of the matroid. We hope that this result could be of independent interest. Finally, we explain how to generalize Symanzik polynomials to the setting of matroids over hyperfields defined recently by Baker and Bowler.

The adjoint braid arrangement as a combinatorial Lie algebra via the Steinmann relations
We study a certain discrete differentiation of piecewise-constant functions on the adjoint of the braid hyperplane arrangement, defined by taking finite-differences across hyperplanes. In terms of Aguiar-Mahajan's Lie theory of hyperplane arrangements, we show that this structure is equivalent to the action of Lie elements on faces. We use layered binary trees to encode flags of adjoint arrangement faces, allowing for the representation of certain Lie elements by antisymmetrized layered binary forests. This is dual to the well-known use of (delayered) binary trees to represent Lie elements of the braid arrangement. The discrete derivative then induces an action of layered binary forests on piecewise-constant functions, which we call the forest derivative. Our main result states that forest derivatives of functions factorize as external products of functions precisely if one restricts to functions which satisfy the Steinmann relations, which are certain four-term linear relations appearing in the foundations of axiomatic quantum field theory. We also show that the forest derivative satisfies the Lie properties of antisymmetry the Jacobi identity. It follows from these Lie properties, and also crucially factorization, that functions which satisfy the Steinmann relations form a left comodule of the Lie cooperad, with the coaction given by the forest derivative. Dually, this endows the adjoint braid arrangement modulo the Steinmann relations with the structure of a Lie algebra internal to the category of vector species. This work is a first step towards describing new connections between Hopf theory in species and quantum field theory.

A recursive enumeration of connected Feynman diagrams with an arbitrary number of external legs in the fermionic non-relativistic interacting gas
Published in Journal of Physics A Mathematical and Theoretical (2019) • View PublicationBIB
In this work, we generalize a recursive enumerative formula for connected Feynman diagrams with two external legs. The Feynman diagrams are defined from a fermionic gas with a two-body interaction. The generalized recurrence is valid for connected Feynman diagrams with an arbitrary number of external legs and an arbitrary order. The recurrence formula terms are expressed in function of weak compositions of non-negative integers and partitions of positive integers in such a way that to each term of the recurrence correspond a partition and a weak composition. The foundation of this enumeration is the Wick theorem, permitting an easy generalization to any quantum field theory. The iterative enumeration is constructive and enables a fast computation of the number of connected Feynman diagrams for a large amount of cases. In particular, the recurrence is solved exactly for two and four external legs, leading to the asymptotic expansion of the number of different connected Feynman diagrams.

Graph calculus and the disconnected-boundary Schwinger-Dyson equations of quartic tensor field theories
Published in Math Phys Anal Geom 23, 42 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Tensor field theory (TFT) focuses on quantum field theory aspects of random tensor models, a quantum-gravity-motivated generalisation of random matrix models. The TFT correlation functions have been shown to be classified by graphs that describe the geometry of the boundary states, the so-called boundary graphs. These graphs can be disconnected, although the correlation functions are themselves connected. In a recent work, the Schwinger-Dyson equations for an arbitrary albeit connected boundary were obtained. Here, we introduce the multivariable graph calculus in order to derive the missing equations for all correlation functions with disconnected boundary, thus completing the Schwinger-Dyson pyramid for quartic melonic (`pillow'-vertices) models in arbitrary rank. We first study finite group actions that are parametrised by graphs and build the graph calculus on a suitable quotient of the monoid algebra $A[G]$ corresponding to a certain function space $A$ and to the free monoid $G$ in finitely many graph variables; a derivative of an element of $A[G]$ with respect to a graph yields its corresponding group action on $A$. The present result and the graph calculus have three potential applications: the non-perturbative large-$N$ limit of tensor field theories, the solvability of the theory by using methods that generalise the topological recursion to the TFT setting and the study of `higher dimensional maps' via Tutte-like equations. In fact, we also offer a term-by-term comparison between Tutte equations and the present Schwinger-Dyson equations.

Moduli spaces of colored graphs
Published in Topology and its Applications Volume 268 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce moduli spaces of colored graphs, defined as spaces of non-degenerate metrics on certain families of edge-colored graphs. Apart from fixing the rank and number of legs these families are determined by various conditions on the coloring of their graphs. The motivation for this is to study Feynman integrals in quantum field theory using the combinatorial structure of these moduli spaces. Here a family of graphs is specified by the allowed Feynman diagrams in a particular quantum field theory such as (massive) scalar fields or quantum electrodynamics. The resulting spaces are cell complexes with a rich and interesting combinatorial structure. We treat some examples in detail and discuss their topological properties, connectivity and homology groups.
