Quantum Information Processing and Composite Quantum Fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
Some beautiful identities involving hook contents of Young diagrams have been found in the field of quantum information processing, along with a combinatorial proof. We here give a representation theoretic proof of these identities and a number of generalizations. Our proof is based on trace identities for elements belonging to a class of permutation centralizer algebras. These algebras have been found to underlie the combinatorics of composite gauge invariant operators in quantum field theory, with applications in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Based on these algebras, we discuss some analogies between quantum information processing tasks and the combinatorics of composite quantum fields and argue that this can be fruitful interface between quantum information and quantum field theory, with implications for AdS/CFT.

The full Schwinger-Dyson tower for random tensor models
Published in PoS CORFU2017 (2018) 147 • View PublicationBIB
We treat random rank-$D$ tensor models as $D$-dimensional quantum field theories---tensor field theories (TFT)---and review some of their non-perturbative methods. We classify the correlation functions of complex tensor field theories by boundary graphs, sketch the derivation of the Ward-Takahashi identity and stress its relevance in the derivation of the tower of exact, analytic Schwinger-Dyson equations for all the correlation functions (with connected boundary) of TFTs with quartic pillow-like interactions.

Graphs in perturbation theory: Algebraic structure and asymptotics
Published in Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Fakultät, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
This thesis provides an extension of the work of Dirk Kreimer and Alain Connes on the Hopf algebra structure of Feynman graphs and renormalization to general graphs. Additionally, an algebraic structure of the asymptotics of formal power series with factorial growth, which is compatible with the Hopf algebraic structure, is introduced. The Hopf algebraic structure on graphs permits the explicit enumeration of graphs with constraints for the allowed subgraphs. In the case of Feynman diagrams a lattice structure, which will be introduced, exposes additional unique properties for physical quantum field theories. The differential ring of factorially divergent power series allows the extraction of asymptotic results of implicitly defined power series with vanishing radius of convergence. Together both structures provide an algebraic formulation of large graphs with constraints on the allowed subgraphs. These structures are motivated by and used to analyze renormalized zero-dimensional quantum field theory at high orders in perturbation theory. As a pure application of the Hopf algebra structure, an Hopf algebraic interpretation of the Legendre transformation in quantum field theory is given. The differential ring of factorially divergent power series will be used to solve two asymptotic counting problems from combinatorics: The asymptotic number of connected chord diagrams and the number of simple permutations. For both asymptotic solutions, all order asymptotic expansions are provided as generating functions in closed form. Both structures are combined in an application to zero-dimensional quantum field theory. Various quantities are explicitly given asymptotically in the zero-dimensional version of $\varphi^3$, $\varphi^4$, QED, quenched QED and Yukawa theory with their all order asymptotic expansions.

Cylindric Reverse Plane Partitions and 2D TQFT
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire - FPSAC 2018, 80B, 30 • Search Publication
The ring of symmetric functions carries the structure of a Hopf algebra. When computing the coproduct of complete symmetric functions $h_λ$ one arrives at weighted sums over reverse plane partitions (RPP) involving binomial coefficients. Employing the action of the extended affine symmetric group at fixed level $n$ we generalise these weighted sums to cylindric RPP and define cylindric complete symmetric functions. The latter are shown to be $h$-positive, that is, their expansions coefficients in the basis of complete symmetric functions are non-negative integers. We state an explicit formula in terms of tensor multiplicities for irreducible representations of the generalised symmetric group. Moreover, we relate the cylindric complete symmetric functions to a 2D topological quantum field theory (TQFT) that is a generalisation of the celebrated $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$-Verlinde algebra or Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring, which plays a prominent role in the context of vertex operator algebras and algebraic geometry.

Structure of the flow and Yamada polynomials of cubic graphs
We establish a quadratic identity for the Yamada polynomial of ribbon cubic graphs in 3-space, extending the Tutte golden identity for planar cubic graphs. An application is given to the structure of the flow polynomial of cubic graphs at zero. The golden identity for the flow polynomial is conjectured to characterize planarity of cubic graphs, and we prove this conjecture for a certain infinite family of non-planar graphs. Further, we establish exponential growth of the number of chromatic polynomials of planar triangulations, answering a question of D. Treumann and E. Zaslow. The structure underlying these results is the chromatic algebra, and more generally the SO(3) topological quantum field theory.

BPS/CFT correspondence IV: sigma models and defects in gauge theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Quantum field theory $L_1$ on spacetime $X_{1}$ can be coupled to another quantum field theory $L_2$ on a spacetime $X_{2}$ via the third quantum field theory $L_{12}$ living on $X_{12} = X_{1} \cap X_{2}$. We explore several such constructions with two and four dimensional $X_{1}, X_{2}$'s and zero and two dimensional $X_{12}$'s, in the context of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations, and BPS/CFT correspondence. The companion paper will show that the BPZ and KZ equations of two dimensional conformal field theory are obeyed by the half-BPS surface defects in quiver $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories.

An algebraic formulation of the locality principle in renormalisation
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the mathematical structure underlying the concept of locality which lies at the heart of classical and quantum field theory, and develop a machinery used to preserve locality during the renormalisation procedure. Viewing renormalisation in the framework of Connes and Kreimer as the algebraic Birkhoff factorisation of characters on a Hopf algebra with values in a Rota-Baxter algebra, we build locality variants of these algebraic structures, leading to a locality variant of the algebraic Birkhoff factorisation. This provides an algebraic formulation of the conservation of locality while renormalising. As an application in the context of the Euler-Maclaurin formula on cones, we renormalise the exponential generating function which sums over the lattice points in convex cones. For a suitable multivariate regularisation, renormalisation from the algebraic Birkhoff factorisation amounts to composition by a projection onto holomorphic multivariate functions.
Enumeration of N-rooted maps using quantum field theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
A one-to-one correspondence is proved between the N-rooted ribbon graphs, or maps, with e edges and the (e-N+1)-loop Feynman diagrams of a certain quantum field theory. This result is used to obtain explicit expressions and relations for the generating functions of N-rooted maps and for the numbers of N-rooted maps with a given number of edges using the path integral approach applied to the corresponding quantum field theory.
Embedding Half-Edge Graphs in Punctured Surfaces
It is known that graphs cellularly embedded into surfaces are equivalent to ribbon graphs. In this work, we generalize this statement to broader classes of graphs and surfaces. Half-edge graphs extend abstract graphs and are useful in quantum field theory in physics. On the other hand, ribbon graphs with half-edges generalize ribbon graphs and appear in a different type of field theory emanating from matrix models. We then give a sense of embeddings of half-edge graphs in punctured surfaces and determine (minimal/maximal) conditions for an equivalence between these embeddings and half-edge ribbon graphs. Given some assumptions on the embedding, the geometric dual of a cellularly embedded half-edge graph is also identified.
Linguistic Matrix Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent research in computational linguistics has developed algorithms which associate matrices with adjectives and verbs, based on the distribution of words in a corpus of text. These matrices are linear operators on a vector space of context words. They are used to construct the meaning of composite expressions from that of the elementary constituents, forming part of a compositional distributional approach to semantics. We propose a Matrix Theory approach to this data, based on permutation symmetry along with Gaussian weights and their perturbations. A simple Gaussian model is tested against word matrices created from a large corpus of text. We characterize the cubic and quartic departures from the model, which we propose, alongside the Gaussian parameters, as signatures for comparison of linguistic corpora. We propose that perturbed Gaussian models with permutation symmetry provide a promising framework for characterizing the nature of universality in the statistical properties of word matrices. The matrix theory framework developed here exploits the view of statistics as zero dimensional perturbative quantum field theory. It perceives language as a physical system realizing a universality class of matrix statistics characterized by permutation symmetry.

Renormalization: a quasi-shuffle approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
In recent years, the usual BPHZ algorithm for renormalization in perturbative quantum field theory has been interpreted, after dimensional regularization, as a Birkhoff decomposition of characters on the Hopf algebra of Feynman graphs, with values in a Rota-Baxter algebra of amplitudes. We associate in this paper to any such algebra a universal semi-group (different in nature from the Connes-Marcolli "cosmical Galois group"). Its action on the physical amplitudes associated to Feynman graphs produces the expected operations: Bogoliubov's preparation map, extraction of divergences, renormalization. In this process a key role is played by commutative and noncommutative quasi-shuffle bialgebras whose universal properties are instrumental in encoding the renormalization process.
A robust generalization of the Legendre transform for QFT
Published in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical, Volume 50, Number 22, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Although perturbative quantum field theory is highly successful, it possesses a number of well-known analytic problems, from ultraviolet and infrared divergencies to the divergence of the perturbative expansion itself. As a consequence, it has been difficult, for example, to prove with full rigor that the Legendre transform of the quantum effective action is the generating functional of connected graphs. Here, we give a rigorous proof of this central fact. To this end, we show that the Legendre transform can be re-defined purely combinatorially and that it ultimately reduces to a simple homological relation, the Euler characteristic for tree graphs. This result suggests that, similarly, also the quantum field theoretic path integral, being a Fourier transform, may be reducible to an underlying purely algebraic structure.

Connected chord diagrams and bridgeless maps
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a surprisingly new connection between two well-studied combinatorial classes: rooted connected chord diagrams on one hand, and rooted bridgeless combinatorial maps on the other hand. We describe a bijection between these two classes, which naturally extends to indecomposable diagrams and general rooted maps. As an application, this bijection provides a simplifying framework for some technical quantum field theory work realized by some of the authors. Most notably, an important but technical parameter naturally translates to vertices at the level of maps. We also give a combinatorial proof to a formula which previously resulted from a technical recurrence, and with similar ideas we prove a conjecture of Hihn. Independently, we revisit an equation due to Arquès and Béraud for the generating function counting rooted maps with respect to edges and vertices, giving a new bijective interpretation of this equation directly on indecomposable chord diagrams, which moreover can be specialized to connected diagrams and refined to incorporate the number of crossings. Finally, we explain how these results have a simple application to the combinatorics of lambda calculus, verifying the conjecture that a certain natural family of lambda terms is equinumerous with bridgeless maps.

The exchange graph and variations of the ratio of the two Symanzik polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Correlation functions in quantum field theory are calculated using Feynman amplitudes, which are finite dimensional integrals associated to graphs. The integrand is the exponential of the ratio of the first and second Symanzik polynomials associated to the Feynman graph, which are described in terms of the spanning trees and spanning 2-forests of the graph, respectively. In a previous paper with Bloch, Burgos and Fresán, we related this ratio to the asymptotic of the Archimedean height pairing between degree zero divisors on degenerating families of Riemann surfaces. Motivated by this, we consider in this paper the variation of the ratio of the two Symanzik polynomials under bounded perturbations of the geometry of the graph. This is a natural problem in connection with the theory of nilpotent and SL2 orbits in Hodge theory. Our main result is the boundedness of variation of the ratio. For this we define the exchange graph of a given graph which encodes the exchange properties between spanning trees and spanning 2-forests in the graph. We provide a description of the connected components of this graph, and use this to prove our result on boundedness of the variations.

Hopf algebras of rooted forests, cocyles and free Rota-Baxter algebras
Published in Journal of Mathematical Physics 2016, 101701, 16 pp • View PublicationBIB
The Hopf algebra and the Rota-Baxter algebra are the two algebraic structures underlying the algebraic approach of Connes and Kreimer to renormalization of perturbative quantum field theory. In particular the Hopf algebra of rooted trees serves as the "baby model" of Feynman graphs in their approach and can be characterized by certain universal properties involving a Hochschild 1-cocycle. Decorated rooted trees have also been applied to study Feynman graphs. We will continue the study of universal properties of various spaces of decorated rooted trees with such a 1-cocycle, leading to the concept of a cocycle Hopf algebra. We further apply the universal properties to equip a free Rota-Baxter algebra with the structure of a cocycle Hopf algebra or a cocycle bialgebra.

Terminal chords in connected chord diagrams
Published • View PublicationBIB
Rooted connected chord diagrams form a nice class of combinatorial objects. Recently they were shown to index solutions to certain Dyson-Schwinger equations in quantum field theory. Key to this indexing role are certain special chords which are called terminal chords. Terminal chords provide a number of combinatorially interesting parameters on rooted connected chord diagrams which have not been studied previously. Understanding these parameters better has implications for quantum field theory. Specifically, we show that the distributions of the number of terminal chords and the number of adjacent terminal chords are asymptotically Gaussian with logarithmic means, and we prove that the average index of the first terminal chord is $2n/3$. Furthermore, we obtain a method to determine any next-to${}^i$ leading log expansion of the solution to these Dyson-Schwinger equations, and have asymptotic information about the coefficients of the log expansions.
Counting surface-kernel epimorphisms from a co-compact Fuchsian group to a cyclic group with motivations from string theory and QFT
Published in Nuclear Physics B 910 (2016), 712-723 • View PublicationBIB
Graphs embedded into surfaces have many important applications, in particular, in combinatorics, geometry, and physics. For example, ribbon graphs and their counting is of great interest in string theory and quantum field theory (QFT). Recently, Koch, Ramgoolam, and Wen [Nuclear Phys.\,B {\bf 870} (2013), 530--581] gave a refined formula for counting ribbon graphs and discussed its applications to several physics problems. An important factor in this formula is the number of surface-kernel epimorphisms from a co-compact Fuchsian group to a cyclic group. The aim of this paper is to give an explicit and practical formula for the number of such epimorphisms. As a consequence, we obtain an `equivalent' form of the famous Harvey's theorem on the cyclic groups of automorphisms of compact Riemann surfaces. Our main tool is an explicit formula for the number of solutions of restricted linear congruence recently proved by Bibak et al. using properties of Ramanujan sums and of the finite Fourier transform of arithmetic functions.
Consistency and Derangements in Brane Tilings
Published in Journal of Physics A 49 (2016) 355401 • View PublicationBIB
Brane tilings describe Lagrangians (vector multiplets, chiral multiplets, and the superpotential) of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. These theories, written in terms of a bipartite graph on a torus, correspond to worldvolume theories on $N$ D$3$-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularity. A pair of permutations compactly encapsulates the data necessary to specify a brane tiling. We show that geometric consistency for brane tilings, which ensures that the corresponding quantum field theories are well behaved, imposes constraints on the pair of permutations, restricting certain products constructed from the pair to have no one-cycles. Permutations without one-cycles are known as derangements. We illustrate this formulation of consistency with known brane tilings. Counting formulas for consistent brane tilings with an arbitrary number of chiral bifundamental fields are written down in terms of delta functions over symmetric groups.

Tutte relations, TQFT, and planarity of cubic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It has been known since the work of Tutte that the value of the chromatic polynomial of planar triangulations at $(3+\sqrt{5})/2$ has a number of remarkable properties. We investigate to what extent Tutte's relations characterize planar graphs. A version of the Tutte linear relation for the flow polynomial at $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$ is shown to give a planarity criterion for $3$-connected cubic graphs. A conjecture is formulated that the golden identity for the flow polynomial characterizes planarity of cubic graphs as well. In addition, Tutte's upper bound on the chromatic polynomial of planar triangulations at $(3+\sqrt{5})/2$ is generalized to other Beraha numbers, and an exponential lower bound is given for the value at $(3-\sqrt{5})/2$. The proofs of these results rely on the structure of the Temperley-Lieb algebra and more generally on methods of topological quantum field theory.

We give a review of modern approaches to constructing formal solutions to integrable hierarchies of mathematical physics, whose coefficients are answers to various enumerative problems. The relationship between these approaches and combinatorics of symmetric groups and their representations is explained. Applications of the results to constructing efficient computations in problems related to models of quantum field theories are given.
