Repetition in reduced decompositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a permutation w, we show that the number of repeated letters in a reduced decomposition of w is always less than or equal to the number of 321- and 3412-patterns appearing in w. Moreover, we prove bijectively that the two quantities are equal if and only if w avoids the ten patterns 4321, 34512, 45123, 35412, 43512, 45132, 45213, 53412, 45312, and 45231.

Non-gatherable triples for classical affine root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper contains a complete description of minimal non-gatherable triangle triples in the lambda-sequences for the affine classical root systems and some claims for arbitrary (reduced) affine root systems. It continues our previous paper devoted to the non-affine case; interestingly, the affine theory clarifies the classification in the non-affine case. The lambda-sequences are associated with reduced decompositions (words) in affine Weyl groups. The existence of the non-gatherable triples is a combinatorial obstacle for using the technique of intertwiners in the theory of irreducible representations of the (double) affine Hecke algebras, complementary to their algebraic-geometric theory.

Reduced decompositions and commutation classes
We study three aspects of commutation classes of reduced decompositions: the number of commutation classes, the structures of their corresponding graphs, and the enumeration of subnetworks, a concept recently introduced by Warrington [21]. Our bound for the number of commutation classes generalizes the works of Knuth[12], Green and Losonczy [7], and Tenner [19]. We analyze the structure of the graph G(w) using pattern avoidance, which provides an application of Tenner's characterization of vexillary permutations in [19]. We also discuss some connections between our work and recent developments in the strong Bruhat order and the higher Bruhat order.

Orbites d'Hurwitz des factorisations primitives d'un élément de Coxeter
Published in Journal of Algebra 323 (2010), pp. 1432-1453 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Hurwitz action of the classical braid group on factorisations of a Coxeter element c in a well-generated complex reflection group W. It is well-known that the Hurwitz action is transitive on the set of reduced decompositions of c in reflections. Our main result is a similar property for the primitive factorisations of c, i.e. factorisations with only one factor which is not a reflection. The motivation is the search for a geometric proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of chains of given length in the non-crossing partitions lattice NCP_W. Our proof uses the properties of the Lyashko-Looijenga covering and the geometry of the discriminant of W.

Non-Gatherable Triples for Non-Affine Root Systems
Published in SIGMA 4 (2008), 079, 12 pages • View PublicationBIB
This paper contains a complete description of minimal non-gatherable triangle triples in the lambda-sequences for the classical root systems, $F_4$ and $E_6$. Such sequences are associated with reduced decompositions (words) in affine and non-affine Weyl groups. The existence of the non-gatherable triples is a combinatorial obstacle for using the technique of intertwiners for an explicit description of the irreducible representations of the (double) affine Hecke algebras, complementary to their algebraic-geometric theory.

Eriksson's numbers game and finite Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain ``amplitudes'' assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. This game and its interactions with Coxeter/Weyl group theory and Lie theory have been studied by many authors. In particular, Eriksson connects certain geometric representations of Coxeter groups with games on graphs with certain real number amplitudes. Games played on such graphs are ``E-games.'' Here we investigate various finiteness aspects of E-game play: We extend Eriksson's work relating moves of the game to reduced decompositions of elements of a Coxeter group naturally associated to the game graph. We use Stembridge's theory of fully commutative Coxeter group elements to classify what we call here the ``adjacency-free'' initial positions for finite E-games. We characterize when the positive roots for certain geometric representations of finite Coxeter groups can be obtained from E-game play. Finally, we provide a new Dynkin diagram classification result of E-game graphs meeting a certain finiteness requirement.

Transitive powers of Young-Jucys-Murphy elements are central
Published • View PublicationBIB
Although powers of the Young-Jucys-Murphya elements X_i = (1 i) + ... +(i-1 i), i = 1, ..., n, in the symmetric group S_n acting on {1, ...,n} do not lie in the centre of the group algebra of S_n, we show that transitive powers, namely the sum of the contributions from elements that act transitively on {1, >...,n}, are central. We determine the coefficients, which we call star factorization numbers, that occur in the resolution of transitive powers with respect to the class basis of the centre of S_n, and show that they have a polynomiality property. These centrality and polynomiality properties have seemingly unrelated consequences. First, they answer a question raised by Pak about reduced decompositions; second, they explain and extend the beautiful symmetry result discovered by Irving and Rattan; and thirdly, we relate the polynomiality to an existing polynomiality result for a class of double Hurwitz numbers associated with branched covers of the sphere, which therefore suggests that there may be an ELSV-type formula associated with the star factorization numbers.

On Expected Factors in Reduced Decompositions in Type B
Published • View PublicationBIB
The expected number of Yang-Baxter moves appearing in a reduced decomposition of the longest element of the Coxeter group of type B_n is computed to be 2-4/n. For the same element, the expected number of 0101 or 1010 factors appearing in a reduced decomposition is 2/(n^2-2).

Reduced Decompositions and Permutation Patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
Billey, Jockusch, and Stanley characterized 321-avoiding permutations by a property of their reduced decompositions. This paper generalizes that result with a detailed study of permutations via their reduced decompositions and the notion of pattern containment. These techniques are used to prove a new characterization of vexillary permutations in terms of their principal dual order ideals in a particular poset. Additionally, the combined frameworks yield several new results about the commutation classes of a permutation. In particular, these describe structural aspects of the corresponding graph of the classes and the zonotopal tilings of a polygon defined by Elnitsky that is associated with the permutation.
Simply-laced Coxeter groups and groups generated by symplectic transvections
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, the number of Gamma_i(F_2)-orbits in F_2^m is equal to 3\times 2^s, where s is the number of simple reflections that appear in a reduced decomposition for u or v and F_2 is the two-element field.
