Links between orthogonal arrays, association schemes and partial geometric designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show how certain three-class association schemes and orthogonal arrays give rise to partial geometric designs. We also investigate the connections between partial geometric designs and certain regular graphs having three or four distinct eigenvalues, three-class association schemes, orthogonal arrays of strength two and particular linear codes. We give various characterizations of these graphs, association schemes and orthogonal arrays in terms of partial geometric designs. We also give a list of infinite families of directed strongly regular graphs arising from the partial geometric designs obtained in this paper.

The coloring of the regular graph of ideals
The regular graph of ideals of the commutative ring $R$, denoted by $Γ_{reg}(R)$, is a graph whose vertex set is the set of all non-trivial ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if either $I$ contains a $J$-regular element or $J$ contains an $I$-regular element. In this paper, it is shown that for every Artinian ring $R$, the edge chromatic number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ equals its maximum degree. Then a formula for the clique number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ is given. Also, it is proved that for every reduced ring $R$ with $n(\geq3)$ minimal prime ideals, the edge chromatic number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ is $2^{n-1}-2$. Moreover, we show that both of the clique number and vertex chromatic number of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ are $n-1$, for every reduced ring $R$ with $n$ minimal prime ideals.

Switched symplectic graphs and their 2-ranks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We apply Godsil-McKay switching to the symplectic graphs over $\mathbb{F}_2$ with at least 63 vertices and prove that the 2-rank of (the adjacency matrix of) the graph increases after switching. This shows that the switched graph is a new strongly regular graph with parameters $(2^{2ν}\!-1, 2^{2ν-1}, 2^{2ν-2},2^{2ν-2})$ and 2-rank $2ν+2$ when $ν\geq 3$. For the symplectic graph on $63$ vertices we investigate repeated switching by computer and find many new strongly regular graphs with the above parameters for $ν=3$ with various 2-ranks. Using these results and a recursive construction method for the symplectic graph from Hadamard matrices, we obtain several graphs with the above parameters, but different 2-ranks for every $ν\geq 3$.

Counting independent sets in graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this short survey article, we present an elementary, yet quite powerful, method of enumerating independent sets in graphs. This method was first employed more than three decades ago by Kleitman and Winston and has subsequently been used numerous times by many researchers in various contexts. Our presentation of the method is illustrated with several applications of it to `real-life' combinatorial problems. In particular, we derive bounds on the number of independent sets in regular graphs, sum-free subsets of $\{1, \ldots, n\}$, and $C_4$-free graphs and give a short proof of an analogue of Roth's theorem on $3$-term arithmetic progressions in sparse random sets of integers which was originally formulated and proved by Kohayakawa, Łuczak, and Rödl.

On the Hamiltonicity of the $k$-regular graph game
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a game played on an initially empty graph where two players alternate drawing an edge between vertices subject to the condition that no degree can exceed $k$. We show that for $k=3$, either player can avoid a Hamilton cycle, and for $k\geq4$, either player can force the resulting graph to be Hamiltonian.

Strongly Regular Graphs as Laplacian Extremal Graphs
The Laplacian spread of a graph is the difference between the largest eigenvalue and the second-smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of the graph. We find that the class of strongly regular graphs attains the maximum of largest eigenvalues, the minimum of second-smallest eigenvalues of Laplacian matrices and hence the maximum of Laplacian spreads among all simple connected graphs of fixed order, minimum degree, maximum degree, minimum size of common neighbors of two adjacent vertices and minimum size of common neighbors of two nonadjacent vertices. Some other extremal graphs are also provided.
On factorisations of complete graphs into circulant graphs and the Oberwolfach Problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
Various results on factorisations of complete graphs into circulant graphs and on 2-factorisations of these circulant graphs are proved. As a consequence, a number of new results on the Oberwolfach Problem are obtained. For example, a complete solution to the Oberwolfach Problem is given for every 2-regular graph of order 2p where p = 5 (mod 8) is prime.

The Laplacian polynomial of graphs derived from regular graphs and applications
Let $R(G)$ be the graph obtained from $G$ by adding a new vertex corresponding to each edge of $G$ and by joining each new vertex to the end vertices of the corresponding edge. Let $RT(G)$ be the graph obtained from $R(G)$ by adding a new edge corresponding to every vertex of $G$, and by joining each new edge to every vertex of $G$. In this paper, we determine the Laplacian polynomials of $RT(G)$ of a regular graph $G$. Moreover, we derive formulae and lower bounds of Kirchhoff index of the graphs. Finally we also present the formulae for calculating the Kirchhoff index of some special graphs as applications, which show the correction and efficiency of the proposed results.
Identifying codes in vertex-transitive graphs and strongly regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of computing identifying codes of graphs and its fractional relaxation. The ratio between the size of optimal integer and fractional solutions is between 1 and 2 ln(|V|)+1 where V is the set of vertices of the graph. We focus on vertex-transitive graphs for which we can compute the exact fractional solution. There are known examples of vertex-transitive graphs that reach both bounds. We exhibit infinite families of vertex-transitive graphs with integer and fractional identifying codes of order |V|^a with a in {1/4,1/3,2/5}. These families are generalized quadrangles (strongly regular graphs based on finite geometries). They also provide examples for metric dimension of graphs.

Automorphisms of strongly regular graphs
In this article we generalize a theorem of Benson for generalized quadrangles to strongly regular graphs and directed strongly regular graphs. The main result provides numerical restrictions on the number of fixed vertices and the number of vertices mapped to adjacent vertices under an automorphism. It is explained how these results can be used when studying partial difference sets in Abelian groups and projective two-weight sets. The underlying ideas are linear algebraic in nature.

Chip-firing may be much faster than you think
A new bound (Theorem \ref{thm:main}) for the duration of the chip-firing game with $N$ chips on a $n$-vertex graph is obtained, by a careful analysis of the pseudo-inverse of the discrete Laplacian matrix of the graph. This new bound is expressed in terms of the entries of the pseudo-inverse. It is shown (Section 5) to be always better than the classic bound due to Bj{ö}rner, Lovász and Shor. In some cases the improvement is dramatic. For instance: for strongly regular graphs the classic and the new bounds reduce to $O(nN)$ and $O(n+N)$, respectively. For dense regular graphs - $d=(\frac{1}{2}+ε)n$ - the classic and the new bounds reduce to $O(N)$ and $O(n)$, respectively. This is a snapshot of a work in progress, so further results in this vein are in the works.

Normally Regular Digraphs
A normally regular digraph with parameters $(v,k,λ,μ)$ is a directed graph on $v$ vertices whose adjacency matrix $A$ satisfies the equation $AA^t=k I+λ(A+A^t)+μ(J-I-A-A^t)$. This means that every vertex has out-degree $k$, a pair of non-adjacent vertices have $μ$ common out-neighbours, a pair of vertices connected by an edge in one direction have $λ$ common out-neighbours and a pair of vertices connected by edges in both directions have $2λ-μ$ common out-neighbours. We often assume that two vertices can not be connected in both directions. We prove that the adjacency matrix of a normally regular digraph is normal. A connected $k$-regular digraph with normal adjacency matrix is a normally regular digraph if and only if all eigenvalues other than $k$ are on one circle in the complex plane. We prove several non-existence results, structural characterizations, and constructions of normally regular digraphs. In many cases these graphs are Cayley graphs of abelian groups and the construction is then based on a generalization of difference sets. We also show connections to other combinatorial objects: strongly regular graphs, symmetric 2-designs and association schemes.

Uniform regular weighted graphs with large degree: Wigner's law, asymptotic freeness and graphons limit
For each $N\geq 1$, let $G_N$ be a simple random graph on the set of vertices $[N]=\{1,2, ..., N\}$, which is invariant by relabeling of the vertices. The asymptotic behavior as $N$ goes to infinity of correlation functions: $$ \mathfrak C_N(T)= \mathbb E\bigg[ \prod_{(i,j) \in T} \Big(\mathbf 1_{\big(\{i,j\} \in G_N \big)} - \mathbb P(\{i,j\} \in G_N) \Big)\bigg], \ T \subset [N]^2 \textrm{finite}$$ furnishes informations on the asymptotic spectral properties of the adjacency matrix $A_N$ of $G_N$. Denote by $d_N = N\times \mathbb P(\{i,j\} \in G_N) $ and assume $d_N, N-d_N\underset{N \rightarrow \infty}{\longrightarrow} \infty$. If $\mathfrak C_N(T) =\big(\frac{d_N}N\big)^{|T|} \times O\big(d_N^{-\frac {|T|}2}\big)$ for any $T$, the standardized empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A_N$ converges in expectation to the semicircular law and the matrix satisfies asymptotic freeness properties in the sense of free probability theory. We provide such estimates for uniform $d_N$-regular graphs $G_{N,d_N}$, under the additional assumption that $|\frac N 2 - d_N- η\sqrt{d_N}| \underset{N \rightarrow \infty}{\longrightarrow} \infty$ for some $η>0$. Our method applies also for simple graphs whose edges are labelled by i.i.d. random variables.

Cayley graph on symmetric groups with generating block transposition sets
This paper deals with the Cayley graph $\Cay,$ where the generating set consists of all block transpositions. A motivation for the study of these particular Cayley graphs comes from current research in Bioinformatics. We prove that ${\rm{Aut}}(\Cay)$ is the product of the right translation group by $\textsf{N}\rtimes \textsf{D}_{n+1},$ where $\textsf{N}$ is the subgroup fixing $S_n$ element-wise and $\textsf{D}_{n+1}$ is a dihedral group of order $2(n+1)$. We conjecture that $\textsf{N}$ is trivial. We also prove that the subgraph $Γ$ with vertex-set $S_n$ is a $2(n-2)$-regular graph whose automorphism group is $\textsf{D}_{n+1}$. Furthermore, $Γ$ has as many as $n+1$ maximum cliques of size $2.$ Also, its subgraph $Γ(V)$ whose vertices are those in these cliques is a $3$-regular, Hamiltonian, and vertex-transitive graph.

Non-existence of (76,30,8,14) strongly regular graph

We prove the non-existence of strongly regular graph with parameters $(76,30,8,14)$. We use Euclidean representation of a strongly regular graph together with a new lower bound on the number of 4-cliques to derive strong structural properties of the graph, and then use these properties to show that the graph cannot exist.

Quadratic Zero-Difference Balanced Functions, APN Functions and Strongly Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $F$ be a function from $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ to itself and $δ$ a positive integer. $F$ is called zero-difference $δ$-balanced if the equation $F(x+a)-F(x)=0$ has exactly $δ$ solutions for all non-zero $a\in\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$. As a particular case, all known quadratic planar functions are zero-difference 1-balanced; and some quadratic APN functions over $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ are zero-difference 2-balanced. In this paper, we study the relationship between this notion and differential uniformity; we show that all quadratic zero-difference $δ$-balanced functions are differentially $δ$-uniform and we investigate in particular such functions with the form $F=G(x^d)$, where $\gcd(d,p^n-1)=δ+1$ and where the restriction of $G$ to the set of all non-zero $(δ+1)$-th powers in $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ is an injection. We introduce new families of zero-difference $p^t$-balanced functions. More interestingly, we show that the image set of such functions is a regular partial difference set, and hence yields strongly regular graphs; this generalizes the constructions of strongly regular graphs using planar functions by Weng et al. Using recently discovered quadratic APN functions on $\mathbb{F}_{2^8}$, we obtain $15$ new $(256, 85, 24, 30)$ negative Latin square type strongly regular graphs.

Notes on dual-critical graphs
We define dual-critical graphs as graphs having an acyclic orientation, where the indegrees are odd except for the unique source. We have very limited knowledge about the complexity of dual-criticality testing. By the definition the problem is in NP, and a result of Balázs and Christian Szegedy provides a randomized polynomial algorithm, which relies on formal matrix rank computing. It is unknown whether dual-criticality test can be done in deterministic polynomial time. Moreover, the question of being in co-NP is also open. We give equivalent descriptions for dual-critical graphs in the general case, and further equivalent descriptions in the special cases of planar graphs and 3-regular graphs. These descriptions provide polynomial algorithms for these special classes. We also give an FPT algorithm for a relaxed version of dual-criticality called $k$-dual-criticality.

Construction of Directed Strongly Regular Graphs as Generalized Cayley Graphs
Directed strongly regular graphs were introduced by Duval in 1998 as one of the possible generalization of classical strongly regular graphs to the directed case. Duval also provided several construction methods for directed strongly regular graphs. In this paper, an infinite family of directed strongly regular graphs is constructed, as generalized Cayley graphs of cyclic groups.

Brooks Type Results for Conflict-Free Colorings and {a, b}-factors in graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 338(12):2295--2301, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
A vertex-coloring of a hypergraph is conflict-free, if each edge contains a vertex whose color is not repeated on any other vertex of that edge. Let $f(r, Δ)$ be the smallest integer $k$ such that each $r$-uniform hypergraph of maximum vertex degree $Δ$ has a conflict-free coloring with at most $k$ colors. As shown by Tardos and Pach, similarly to a classical Brooks' type theorem for hypergraphs, $f(r, Δ)\leq Δ+1$. Compared to Brooks' theorem, according to which there is only a couple of graphs/hypergraphs that attain the $Δ+1$ bound, we show that there are several infinite classes of uniform hypergraphs for which the upper bound is attained. We provide bounds on $f(r, Δ)$ in terms of~$Δ$ for large~$Δ$ and establish the connection between conflict-free colorings and so-called $\{t, r-t\}$-factors in $r$-regular graphs. Here, a $\{t, r-t\}$-factor is a factor in which each degree is either $t$ or $r-t$. Among others, we disprove a conjecture of Akbari and Kano~[Graphs and Combinatorics 30(4):821--826, 2014] stating that there is a $\{t,r-t\}$-factor in every $r$-regular graph for odd $r$ and any odd $t<\frac{r}{3}$.

The Random Transposition Dynamics on Random Regular Graphs and the Gaussian Free Field
Published • View PublicationBIB
A single permutation, seen as union of disjoint cycles, represents a regular graph of degree two. Consider $d$ many independent random permutations and superimpose their graph structures. It is a common model of a random regular (multi-) graph of degree $2d$. We consider the following dynamics. The dimension (i.e. size) of each permutation grows by coupled Chinese Restaurant Processes, while in time each permutation evolves according to the random transposition chain. Asymptotically in the size of the graph one observes a remarkable evolution of short cycles and linear eigenvalue statistics in dimension and time. In dimension, it was shown by Johnson and Pal (2014) that cycle counts are described by a Poisson field of Yule processes. Here, we give a Poisson random surface description in dimension and time of the limiting cycle counts for every $d$. As $d$ grows to infinity, the fluctuation of the limiting cycle counts, across dimension, converges to the Gaussian Free Field. In time this field is preserved by a stationary Gaussian dynamics. The laws of these processes are similar to eigenvalue fluctuations of the minor process of a real symmetric Wigner matrix whose coordinates evolve as i.i.d. stationary stochastic processes.
